Amy Carmichael’s Suffering

Few would have expected David and Catherine Carmichael’s eldest daughter, Amy, to grow up to become one of the world’s most famous missionaries.

Born in 1867 in the small village of Millisle, Northern Ireland, there was nothing particularly unusual about this girl, who was known for her wilfulness, tomboyish attitude and a propensity to get into mischievous pranks.

Little did the Carmichael parents realize that their daughter would be God’s tool for rescuing hundreds of children from a life worse than death in the darkness of the Indian jungles.

Though Amy’s father died when she was five, the gap had been amply filled by the widower Robert Wilson. Cofounder of the Keswick Convention, Wilson was a catalyst for the holiness movement in England and a support for many missionaries around the globe. When she was in her young twenties, Wilson asked to be allowed to adopt Amy, for whom he felt a special fondness after the loss of his only daughter. Thus it was that Amy Carmichael moved in with Mr. Wilson and his sons to work as his secretary. The job put Amy in direct contact with many of the missionaries around the world, including Hudson Taylor, Theodore Monod and F.B. Meyer. This was no doubt instrumental in pressing upon Amy the call to mission work.

An Unlikely Missionary

Amy Carmichael was an unlikely candidate for the life of a missionary. She suffered from neuralgia, a disease that stimulates the nerves to feel pain and which caused Amy to have to spend entire weeks in bed. Moreover, she felt reluctant to leave Robert Wilson, as the two of them had grown extremely attached to each other. Yet the call of Jesus upon her would not go away. Around this time she wrote to her mother that

“Everything, everything seemed to be saying ‘Go’, through all sounds the cry seemed to rise, ’Come over and help us.’ Every bit of pleasure of work which has come to me, has had underlying it the thought of those people who have never, never heard of Jesus; before my eyes clearer than any lovely view has been the constant picture of those millions who have no chance, and never had one, of hearing of the love which makes our lives so bright.”

Amy initially had no idea where the Lord was leading her to go. She only knew that she needed to go somewhere. Rejected by the China Inland Mission because of her frailty, she was eventually able to go to Japan as a Keswick missionary with the Church Missionary Society. In the providence of God, however, Amy was only able to stay in Japan for fifteen months because of ill health. God had other plans for this young woman.

Amy remained restless, eager for a new assignment. The opportunity presented itself nine months later when she was accepted by the Church of England Zenana Mission to go as a missionary to India. Sailing for India in 1895, Amy had no idea that she would remain there for the next fifty-six years.

Rescuing Children

It took Amy Carmichael some time to settle down to life as a missionary in India. Having little in common with the other missionaries and being unable to speak to the natives, Amy experienced acute bouts of loneliness. Additionally, she struggled with ill health to such a degree that some of her fellow missionaries predicted that she would not last more than six months. Despite these setbacks, Amy persevered with a rigorous study of the Tamil language, longing to be able to share the gospel in a language the natives could understand.

It was after being appointed to minister in the Tinnevelly District that Amy first became aware of the horrifying practice of dedicating little girls to the Hindu gods. The practice, which had begun sometime around the 6th century, involved grooming girls, some of them only babies, for a life of ritualised prostitution. These girls were a valuable commodity since they would become the sex slaves of the Brahmin priests who ran the temples. Considered to be the property of the gods, the girls had no rights of their own and could be abused and tortured without censure.

Because the Hindus were taught that it was meritorious to donate their children to the gods, and since there were often financial rewards for parents who did so, many children were dedicated even before their birth. Some girls were simply kidnapped and forced to spend the rest of their lives as sex fodder in the darkness of the jungle temples.

Amy’s work in the Tinnevelly District brought her to Dohnavur, a small village thirty miles from the southern tip of India. Originally, Amy Carmichael and her fellow missionaries intended to use Dohnavur merely as a base for a few month’s missionary activity in the region. But again, God had other plans. Dohnavur became a base for one of the world’s most successful missionary endeavours, offering sanctuary to hundreds of girls, and eventually to boys too, who had escaped from a fate worse than death.

Preena’s Escape

It started when a small girl named Preena was given as a gift to the gods at the age of seven (possibly younger). Preena was removed from her mother and placed in the care of a woman charged with teaching her singing and dancing to order to make her more desirable to the Hindu priests. Like all the others in her position, she was also subtlety trained to find sin attractive, in order to break down the natural barriers that might inhibit her usefulness once she reached puberty.

Preena was too young and innocent to understand what it meant to be “married to the god,” but only longed to be back with her mother. When she could endure it no longer, Preena escaped and made the two day journey back to the town of Tuticorin where her mother lived. However, the woman into whose care she had been placed was quick on her heals. No sooner had Preena arrived home than the wicked woman caught up with her and demanded to have the girl returned. While Preena clung to her mother begging not to be sent away, the woman threatened wrath from the gods should she refuse to consent. Fearing the Hindu deities, Preena’s mother unloosed her daughter’s clinging arms and returned her to the temple’s service.

As a punishment for escaping, Preena had her hands branded with a red hot iron. Yet this incredibly painful procedure seems to have only made Preena more eager to be free. Not long after this, Preena overheard her captors making plans to marry her to the god as soon as possible. Misunderstanding the Hindu idiom “tied to the god”, Preena believed she was to be tied with ropes to the figure of an idol she had seen in the dark recesses of the temple. Terrified by the prospect, Preena made up her mind to escape again. This time, she was wise enough not to flee to her mother, but escaped to the town of Pannaivilai where she was found and offered accommodation by a Christian woman. Providentially Amy and her friends happened to be traveling through her old town at the same time and met Preena the next morning. Preena described her first meeting with Amy:

Our precious Ammai [‘Ammai’ means ‘true mother’ in Tamil] was having her morning chota. When she saw me, the first thing she did was to put me on her lap and kiss me. I thought, ‘My mother used to put me on her lap and kiss me – who is this person who kisses me like my mother?’ From that day she became my mother, body and soul.’

The stories Amy heard from Preena filled her with horror and made her more determined than ever to bring down the horrible industry of sex trafficking. Amy began finding out everything she could about the trafficking, developing a growing network of helpers and informants.

The Dohnavur Fellowship

After gaining a reputation for rescuing children, many escaped girls made their way to Dohnavur. But Amy did not just wait around for people to arrive on her doorstep. Whenever she heard about someone in danger, Amy would be proactive in doing all she could to rescue the child. She would sometimes travel incredibly long distances on India’s hot, dusty roads just to save one child.

Amy was even known to engage in covert activities of questionable legality in order to save girls and boys from the horrors of temple service. As the years progressed, Amy Carmichael became a shrewd detective, often finding missing clues supplied by a chance circumstance or even a dream that could only be explained by the Providence of God.

But she was not always successful. One child she had been unsuccessful in saving was drugged and (as she confided to her own private notebook after learning the horrifying facts) “then died in such agony that the one who was responsible fled from the house with his hands over his ears to shut out the sounds of her screams.”

In 1918 a boy arrived, the first in what would become a whole community of boys next to Dohnavur’s small village of girls. Amy loved working with the children, always finding time to play with them and let them know that they were loved and valued. Inspired by her example, many others came and joined the ministry at Dohnavur, offering their unique skills and gifts to the expanding operation.

As more and more children were rescued, Dohnavur became an expanding orphanage. But it was more like a family than an orphanage, with Amy functioning as the mother for hundreds of unwanted children. She was affectionately called ‘Amma’, by the children, the Tamil word for Mother.

The Dohnavur fellowship, as it came to be known, became a model of Christian living. Though not perfect, the growing community had few parallels in modern times for the unity, prayer and love that emanated from it. The following quotation, taken from a little manuscript Amy wrote for some of her closest co-labourers, shows what Amy’s heart was for all of Dohnavur:

We are trusted to spread the spirit of love. Tenderness in judgment, the habit of thinking the best of one another, unwillingness to believe evil, grief if we are forced to do so, eagerness to believe good, joy over one recovered from any slip or fall, unselfish gladness in another’s joys, sorrow in another’s sorrow, readiness to do anything to help another entirely irrespective of self- all this and much more is included in that wonderful word love. If love weakens among us, if it ever becomes possible to tolerate the least shadow of an unloving thought, our Fellowship will begin to perish. Unlove is deadly. It is a cancer. It may kill slowly but it always kills in the end. Let us fear it, fear to give room to it as we should fear to nurse a cobra. It is deadlier than any cobra. And just as one minute drop of the almost invisible cobra venom spreads swiftly all over the body of one into whom it has been injected, so one drop of the gall of unlove in my heart or yours, however unseen, has a terrible power of spreading all through our Family, for we are one body – we are parts of one another. If one member suffers loss, all suffer loss. Not one of us liveth to herself.

Confinement

When she was in her young sixties, Amy Carmichael broke her leg and twisted her spine in a fall. The injury left her bedridden for the remainder of her life and in almost constant pain. Rarely did she sleep through an entire night without waking up in pain.

Being convalescent did not come easy for Amy, who was naturally an energetic and active person. She would later reflect, “I never found patience easy, being by nature a most impatient mortal; even one week in bed seemed impossible in old days.”

Despite her own suffering, Amy Carmichael remained remarkably others-centred. Because of her own trials, Amy was able to have a remarkable empathy for the sufferings others had to endure, offering comfort and refreshment even when those trials were comparatively mild compared with hers.

Legacy

The love of God radiated from Amy like a power magnet, touching so many lives and irresistibly pointing people towards Jesus.

When Amy Carmichael died in 1951 at the age of 83, she left behind herself a remarkable legacy, both in the lives of those she had touched as well as in the literary output that she left behind.

From Dohnavur Amy wrote book after book, including the highly influential Things as They Are: Mission Work in Southern India (1903) and Gold Cord (1932). As a result of her books, more and more Westerners began following the work, supporting it with gifts and prayer. Moreover, these works alerted the West to the evils of the Hindu temple system and played a key role in the eventual downfall of the industry.

Lessons From The Life of Amy Carmichael

Amy Carmichael did not merely write about her missionary work. Many of her books are devotionals that have inspired countless men and woman into deeper love for their Saviour and a hunger to follow him more completely. Perhaps the greatest lesson that Amy’s life and writings teach us is how to know Christ in the fellowship of His sufferings.

Suffering was a constant companion to Amy Carmichael. Despite the bodily hardships she faced, her worst sufferings were not even physical. Having so much love and tenderness in her heart, words cannot describe her anguish when occasionally she would lose a child she thought she had rescued, sometimes from her very doorstep.

Despite the difficulties of her life, the Lord helped Amy to see these sufferings positively, as battle wounds and honours gained in the service of her Saviour. The following poem reveals something of this approach to suffering:

From prayer that asks that I may be
Sheltered from winds that beat on Thee,
From fearing when I should aspire,
From faltering when I should climb higher
From silken self, O Captain, free
Thy soldier who would follow Thee.
From subtle love of softening things,
From easy choices, weakening,
(Not thus are spirits fortified,
Not this way went the Crucified)
From all that dims Thy Calvary
O Lamb of God, deliver me.
Give me the love that leads the way,
The faith that nothing can dismay
The hope no disappointments tire,
The passion that will burn like fire;
Let me not sink to be a clod;
Make me Thy fuel, Flame of God

Boniface Runs Towards the Roar

Boniface runs towards the roar
Boniface runs towards the roar

In Wessex England, sometime in the late seventh century, a group of boys gathered on the grass after church. While the rest of the villagers enjoyed their church’s fellowship meal, the boys were being led by one young man in his favorite sport – throwing boulders at one another.

The young man would be known to history by the name he would later adopt: Boniface. As this young man grew, he quickly distinguished himself as the roughest, toughest boy in the village.

Not only did Boniface excel in the virtues of strength, courage and manliness, but he also had a reputation for his aptitude in academics. This may be one of the reasons why, from an early age, he was attracted to the monastic way of life. In those days, the priests were the custodians of knowledge and it was in the monasteries that the great libraries were housed.

The Restless Monk

Still a young man, Boniface entered the monastic life of the Benedictines, where he remained until he was around forty years old, caring for the sick, ministering to the poor and discipling younger monks. He also gained a reputation through his scholastic endeavors, teaching theology and compiling the first Latin grammar ever to be written. Being sensitive to beauty and the arts, he also found time to write poetry.

Because of his devotion to the saints, his reputation in piety and his unequalled intellect, everyone assumed that Boniface would eventually become a bishop. However, Boniface was restless and had other plans. He is quoted as saying:

I yearn to go forth where the dangers are, not because I particular enjoy those dangers, but because I know it is there that the battle rages for the soul of men and nations. God set me before the front lines. Let me not end my days in comfort and complacency.

The restless monk began studying the missionary endeavors taking place throughout the world. He was particularly attracted to the most difficult mission fields, such as the land we now call Germany, where the Teutonic and Saxons tribes were so savage that few missionaries had dared to venture there, while those who did met with extremely limited success. One of the missionaries who had attempted to reach these lands had described them being fields of iron where a man would broken trying to plough them. That was all the prompting Boniface needed. Rejecting the opportunity to become a bishop and live a life of ease, Boniface sailed to the continent and into danger.

Before he could get started, Boniface needed to go to Rome to give the Pope an opportunity to examine him. Impressed with the middle-aged man, Pope Gregory II blessed Boniface in 719 and sent him forward.

Once among the wild Germanic tribes, Boniface encountered a sparse population of believers who had been reached by the efforts of previous missionaries. These Christians were scattered, discouraged and disorganized. Whenever Boniface entered a new area, his first task would be to bring these scattered Christians together, organize them and form missionary cells. When he later left the region, the missionary cells he had begun would continue the work of reaching the lost.

The fierce Norsemen who had settled along the Danish and German coast lived in constant fear of their pagan gods. To pacify the powers of the forest, they engaged in human mutilation, vestal sacrifices, and other brutal practices.

The priests who made their living worshiping these false gods were venomously opposed to the gospel. Boniface knew that every time he opened his mouth to tell people about Jesus he was taking his life in his hands. Yet Boniface unflinchingly proclaimed the truth regardless of consequences. This courageous attitude was demonstrated in the famous the Oak of Thor incident in 723.

The Oak of Thor

Near the present-day town of Fritzlar in northern Hesse (west-central Germany), Boniface had been ministering to the pagans with little success. Being a stronghold for the worship of the Norse god Thor (known among the West Germanic tribes as Donar), Boniface was convinced that reaching this area with the gospel would pave the way for the entire region to follow.

Outside the town stood Mount Gudenberg. At the top of this mountain was a sacred grove which marked the main point of veneration in the Thor cult. In the centre of the grove stood a mighty oak tree, known as the Oak of Thor. Pilgrims would walk for many miles in order to stand before this sacred tree and worship the god of thunder.

As Boniface was staying with the Hessians, it happened that a great ceremony was scheduled to take place in the sacred grove. Boniface spread word that during the ceremony he would be challenging Thor.

When the evening for the ceremony arrived, villagers came from miles around, some to worship Thor, other to see what this monk was up to. As Boniface marched with the procession up to the sacred grove, no one noticed the axe hidden in the folds of his priestly garments.

No sooner had the worshipers formed a circle around the sacred tree than Boniface stood up. Interrupting the chanting of the druid priest, he defiantly marched over to the holy tree and pulled out his axe.

In stunned silence, the worshipers looked on as Boniface began doing the unthinkable: he began hacking at Thor’s sacred tree!

“Stop!” yelled one of the chiefs. “Thor will strike you dead if you do that!” But Boniface, paying no attention, continued to cut.

The crowd, now stricken dumb with horror, expected Thor to intervene at any moment to strike the insolent Christian to the ground. But the fierce red-haired god, known for riding through the sky with a gigantic hammer, did not arrive.

Boniface continued to hack.

As he worked, sweat pouring down the rippling muscles of the middle-aged man, Boniface no doubt thought of Elijah on Mount Carmel. Boniface called upon Thor to strike him with his hammer. But Thor did not arrive. He did not even wield the lightning and thunderbolts with which he was traditionally associated.

Suddenly a great wind arose and the already weakened oak blew to the ground. But Boniface was still standing. Thor had not defended his property.

Realizing that their gods were powerless to protect their own sacred places, the crowd was now ready to listen to Boniface’s message.

In the days that followed, all the villagers were baptized and helped Boniface to build a chapel from the wood of the toppled tree.

A Once and For All Sacrifice

As the pilgrims who had come to watch the ceremony returned to their own villages, they not only took with them the story of what had happened, but they also took with them the good news of Jesus Christ. They told how a monk named Boniface had told them of a God of love who was stronger than the gods of the forest. As word spread, entire villages of Hessians converted en masse. This was a gradual process in those days when news could only travel as fast as a person. Thus, only three evenings after the incident, a young boy rushed into Boniface’s camp from a neighboring village with a report that his 15-year old sister was about to be offered as a vestal sacrifice to the gods of the forest.

Boniface and a small band of disciples wasted no time. They quickly followed the boy back to the site where the terrible event was about to take place. Not a moment too early, they entered the grove just in time to see the witch doctor raising his stone knife.

As the blade began its downwards descent towards the breasts of the young maiden, Boniface hurled himself forward, simultaneously knocking over the priest and receiving on himself the blow of the knife. Providentially, the knife embedded itself in a small wooden cross that Boniface was wearing, piercing it in two but preserving the missionary’s life.

Even as the stunned witch doctor shrieked at the monk, Boniface told of an ultimate sacrifice that had already been offered. Using the druid’s knife to cut down fur boughs, Boniface preached to the crowd about Christ’s finished work on the cross of Cavalry, explaining that because of this there was no longer any need for additional sacrifices. He urged the onlookers to take the branches home as a memorial of the provision achieved by Christ. Legend has it that this occurred on the first Sunday in Advent and that this was the origin of Advent wreaths.

Death

At the age of 73, Boniface decided to sail down the Rhine and preach to the pagan tribes in Fresia (modern day Holland), where he had begun his work many years earlier. While visiting a former mission station, a local warlord slaughtered Boniface and all his companions, thinking they were carrying gold. The distressed villagers found him laying face down in the snow with his head cudgeled.

For many years Boniface had been prepared for his death. “I know I shall die,” he once said, “and I shall die on time. Therefore, I must make the most of the moments between here and there. And the way I can make most of these moments is to live them in terms of that which I know to be absolutely true and unchanging. I will not be swayed from this conviction though my moments be short, though my moments be long.”

Lesson from the Life of Boniface

Boniface was not without his faults. Believing that only a strong centralized church could triumph over the warring pagan tribes, he refused to work alongside Celtic missionaries who would not acknowledge the authority of the Pope and who allowed their clergy to marry. Yet despite his problems there are a number of lessons we can draw from Boniface’s amazing life. In particular, the following four aspects stand out.

First, evangelism for Boniface was not about simply getting someone to pray the sinner’s prayer, securing them a place in heaven and then moving on to the next person. Like the apostle Paul, Boniface realized that evangelism needed to also include discipleship. Thus, wherever Boniface brought the gospel, he also established churches and equipped the saints to continue in the faith. Like the apostle Paul, he would always endeavor to return and visit these churches to see how they were doing and to encourage them to persevere in the faith.

The second lesson we learn from Boniface is the importance of having a generational focus. He believed that the success of his mission should be judged in terms of generations and centuries, not merely the fruit produced during one lifetime. Thus, he put mechanisms in place to assist the progress of the gospel after he was gone. This included planting schools to increase literacy so that the young could be more easily discipled and become strong in the Word.

Third, Boniface helps us to appreciate that the triumph of the gospel results, not simply in saved individuals, but in the total transformation of culture. He worked to bring civilization to the barbaric tribes, introducing them to the arts, to music, to poetry and to learning. He established libraries and put men to work copying manuscripts so that the next generation would have access, not only to the Bible, but to other great works of literature. The gospel was not only about transformed lives, but a transformed culture.

The fourth lesson that Boniface teaches us is the importance of spiritual warfare. When Boniface went into action, there was no doubt that he was waging war against principalities and powers in high places. In the raw paganism of the Germanic tribes, the power of the occult was very strong, but Boniface knew that the power of Christ was stronger. Not only was Boniface unafraid to challenge these powers head-on, knowing that Christ had defeated them through His death and resurrection, but he excitedly rushed towards the battle, always eager for a chance to demonstrate the power of Christ. He said:

Let us stand fast in what is right and prepare our souls for trial. Let us neither be dogs that do not bark nor silent onlookers, nor paid servants who run away before the wolf. Instead, where the battle rages, let us find ourselves. Run towards the roar of the lion! Run towards the roar of battle! That is where Christ’s most glorious victories shall be won.

St. Athanasius: Against the World

St. Athanasius
St. Athanasius

It was the year 313, and the bishop of Alexandria stood at his window and looked out upon the city he was responsible for.

Beyond the line of houses, Bishop Alexander could see the city’s port bustling with the activity that had made Egypt such a rich trading centre during the height of the Roman Empire. Beyond that, stretching as far into the distance as the eye could see, the bishop looked upon the waters of the Mediterranean.

Just as Bishop Alexander was about to turn away from the window and prepare for some guests he was expecting for Sunday dinner, his gaze caught something he hadn’t seen before. On the shore of the harbor a group of boys were playing.

In itself this was nothing unusual; what was unusually is what the boys were playing. They seemed to be reenacting a baptism service. One of the boys was actually baptizing the other boys.

Concerned that the boys were making light of weighty matters, the Bishop sent his servant to break up the mock service and bring the boys to himself.

When the boys arrived at his house, the bishop began by asking the boys what they had been playing.

“It wasn’t our fault,” put in one of the company. “It was the bishop’s fault.” As he said this, the boy pointed towards a tall slim lad with ruddy hair, the one whom Alexander had seen baptizing the other boys.

“What is your name?” he asked.

“My name is Athanasius,” the young boy replied, a little nervous to find the bishop taking such an interest in him. “We were just playing,” the boy continued. “I was pretending to be the bishop and these [pointing to his companions] are my catechumens who have been awaiting baptism.”

As Bishop Alexander continued to question the boy, his response turned from one of censure to wonder. It turned out that the child had performed the baptismal rites on his companions with remarkable accuracy, perfectly reciting in Greek the liturgical formula used in the baptism of catechumens.

“Are you a Christian?” Alexander asked.

“Yes.”

Bishop Alexander continued his inquiries. “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

“I want to be a priest.”

The bishop stood silent for a moment eying the boy. “It is not an easy life,” he said softly, recalling the Diocletian persecution which had only just come to an end and in which many of his friends had been martyred for the faith. “Also, a priest must have learning.”

“I love to learn,” said the boy, “And I am not afraid of anything!”

Impressed by the boy’s enthusiasm, the bishop made inquiries into the names and whereabouts of his parents. Later that week Alexander paid Athanasius’ parents a visit and asked for permission to bring the boy up in order to train and educate him for the ministry. Athanasius’ parents, who always knew there was something special about their boy, gladly accepted the bishop’s offer.

Athanasius quickly grew to love the gentle bishop as a father. But Athanasius was not the only one blessed by the relationship. The busy bishop found his generosity to the boy repaid a hundredfold, as the lad became a most useful assistant. Together the two of them travelled around the vast diocese, strengthening local church leaders and ministering to the needs of the saints.

Six years later, when Athanasius was 23 years old, he was ordained as a deacon and continued to work closely with the aging Patriarch.

The Trouble Begins

In those days the church was expanding drastically under the new freedom afforded by Constantine’s Edict of Milan. The Edict, issued in the same year that Alexander had found Athanasius playing on the harbor shore, brought an end to centuries of persecution that Christians had faced under previous hostile emperors.

But this new freedom also gave new opportunities for the devil to sow seeds of disunity and heresy among the Lord’s flock, even as Paul had warned in Acts 20:29-30:

“I know this, that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also, men shall arise from your own selves and speak perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.”

The trouble that would mark Athanasius’ career began one afternoon when Bishop Alexander was lecturing on the Trinity at a pastor’s conference. In the course of the talk, a pastor from Libya named Arius stood up and opposed Alexander’s view that Jesus was co-eternal with the Father.

Like modern day Jehovah’s Witnesses, Arius argued that if Jesus was God’ son, then by definition he must have had a beginning to his existence and could not also be eternal God. Alexander tried to reason with Arius, but to no avail. It wouldn’t be long before Arius gathered a whole retinue of local pastors around himself, chanting “There was a time when he was not, there was a time when he was not,” indicating their belief that Jesus was a creature with a beginning rather than the eternal Son of God.

Soon followers of Arius could be heard throughout the whole empire singing their catchy songs.

It is not surprising that Arius’ heresy found such a ready audience. For hundreds of years Mediterranean culture had revolved around the worship of the emperor and various other demigods. If Jesus was simply a great man or angel, then serving Him was compatible with the worship of these other deities. Arianism was thus found to be highly attractive to those in positions of power.

Contending for the Faith

As the Arian controversy continued to spread like wildfire throughout the empire, it eventually caught the attention of the emperor. Division in the church deeply troubled the Constantine, who considered such in-fighting to be worse than war. In an attempt to resolve the conflict and restore unity to the fledgling church, Constantine convened a council at Nicaea in 325.

An innumerable company of churchmen, including 1,800 bishops, congregated at Nicaea from all over the empire. For three months the pastors debated the Arian heresy and other subsidiary matters.

As the proceedings continued, Bishop Alexander was overshadowed by his young assistant, Athanasius, who used his scriptural knowledge and rhetorical skills to persuade the congregants that this was no small matter. If Jesus is a created being, Athanasius argued, then He is not God; but unless Jesus is both fully man and fully God, He could not save us from our sins. This is because only one who was fully human can atone for human sin, but only one who is fully divine has the power to save us.

Under the force of these and other arguments,

Under the oversight of Emperor Constantine and with the help of young Athanasius, the Council of Nicea penned one of the most succinct statements on Christian doctrine that has ever been produced. Most importantly, the creed reaffirmed Jesus' divinity.

: “We believe… in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God…very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father.”

When he refused to say the creed, Arius was pronounced a heretic and exiled.

For Athanasius and Alexander, Nicaea was the beginning, not the end, of trouble.

Banishment

Only a few months after the council, trouble surfaced when the supporters of Arius urged the emperor to end Arius’s exile, persuading him that Arius had repented. Constantine responded by ordering Bishop Alexander to restore Arias to table fellowship. Alexander refused, pointing out that Arius had not actually retracted his view that Jesus wasn’t God.

Three years after the council of Nicaea, Alexander died, leaving Athanasius to become the next Bishop of Alexandria. The Arians in the city saw this as an opportunity to make a come-back, having greatly underestimated the strength of Alexander’s young successor.

When it became clear that Athanasius would not let anyone enter the church who refused to say the Nicean Creed, the Arian party started a mud-slinging campaign. They accused Athanasius of everything from murder to illegal taxation. When these false accusations reached the ears of Constantine, Athanasius was summoned to appear before representatives of the emperor to answer charges. The following account (from Book I of Theodoret’s Ecclesiastical History and adapted by Stuart Bryan for a 2008 edition of Saint Anne’s Public House) tells about some of the charges leveled against Athanasius.

One of these charges concerned a certain Arsenius, a bishop of the faction opposed to Athanasius. The men of his party put him in hiding, and charged him to remain there as long as possible. They then cut off the right hand of a corpse, embalmed it, placed it in a wooden case, and carried it about everywhere, declaring that it was the hand of Arsenius, who had been murdered by Athanasius. But the all-seeing eye did not permit Arsenius to remain long in concealment. The friends of Athanasius hunted Arsenius up, apprehended him and brought him to an inn in Tyre, where they kept him until the council was convened.

On the appointed day, early in the morning, the great Athanasius and his close friend Timotheus came to the council. His enemies first accused him of violating the chastity of a woman in whose house he had lodged. The woman herself was present as witness to the crime. She stood and reported (with loud tears and sighs) how she had invited Athanasius into her house only to be ravished by the unfeeling wretch. When she had finished, the court ordered Athanasius to reply, but Athanasius remained silent. Instead, Timotheus stepped forward, as though he were Athanasius, and addressed her, “Have I, O woman, ever conversed with you, or have I entered your house?” She replied with even greater effrontery, screaming aloud at Timotheus, and, pointing at him with her finger, exclaimed, “It was you who robbed me of my virginity; it was you who stripped me of my chastity.” The devisers of this calumny were put to shame, and all the bishops who were privy to it, blushed, while the woman herself (a local prostitute as it turned out) was dragged from the room still screaming and accusing “Athanasius” of violating her.

But Athanasius’ enemies were undeterred by this turn of events. This was not the only, nor the most serious charge against him. At this point the small, covered box containing the embalmed hand of the murdered Bishop Arsenius was produced. A gasp spread through the room when it was opened and all the spectators uttered a loud cry. Some believed the accusation to be true; the others had no doubt of the falsehood, and thought that Arsenius was lurking somewhere or other in hiding.

When at length, after some difficulty, a little silence was obtained, Athanasius asked his judges whether any of them knew Arsenius. Several of them replying, “Why, yes, of course we knew him!”, Athanasius gave orders that a man who had hitherto stood outside in a long cloak be brought before them. Then Athanasius again asked them, “Is this the right Arsenius? Is this the man I murdered? Is this the man those people mutilated after his murder by cutting off his right hand?” When they had acknowledged that it was the same individual, Athanasius pulled off Arsenius’ cloak, and exhibited two hands, both the right and the left, and said, “Let no one seek for a third hand, for man has received two hands from the Creator and no more.”

When Athanasius’ accusers found that their tricks had backfired, they attempted to murder him. He would surely have been killed had not the emperor’s soldiers stepped in and installed Athanasius safety on board a ship.

Not long after this Athanasius reported to the emperor the unjust treatment he had undergone at the council. The emperor commanded the men Athanasius had complained about to appear before him. Instead of urging any of the former accusations (which had been so easily refuted) they switched their tactics and told Constantine that Athanasius had threatened to prevent the exportation of corn from Alexandria. Believing what they said, Constantine banished Athanasius to a city of Gaul called Treves.

It was only when Constantine died two years later in 337 that Athanasius was able to return to Alexandria. However, upon his homecoming Athanasius found that Arianism had seeped into the city like a poison. This time it was the church leaders who plotted how they might get rid of Athanasius because of his continuing commitment to the deity of Christ. The opportunity presented itself the following year when Constantine’s son, the new Roman Emperor Constantius II, renewed the order for Athanasius’s banishment, even issuing orders that Athanasius should be put to death if he entered his home church.

In 346 Athanasius was finally allowed to return, only to be exiled on three more occasions by the next two Roman emperors (Julian, noted for his opposition to Christianity, and Valens, noted for his Arianism). In 366 Athanasius was able to resume his bishopric for the last and final time, holding it until his death in 373 at the age of 78.

He did not move with the times

Athanasius’ life stands out as one of the most remarkable in the entire history of the church. Rejecting the life of ease that would later come to characterize so many bishops, Athanasius was prepared to live in constant turmoil and suspense rather than compromise on the deity of Christ. Though he would not live to see it, his battle against Arianism was successful, as seen by the fact that the modern descendents of Arius (the Jehovah’s Witnesses) are now exiled from the true church.

Although Athanasius’ enemies had hoped to silence him by removing him, the result was actually the opposite. During the seventeen years that he spent in exile, Athanasius had a chance to visit Christians in far off places, spreading his influence as a learned teacher and opening up wider and wider ministry opportunities. These periods of exile also gave him a chance to write and enabled him to leave behind a rich legacy of books.

Athanasius’ most influential work, On the Incarnation, continues to help Christians to this day in understanding the importance of Jesus’ divinity and humanity. In other works Athanasius distinguished himself as a leading apologist, defending Christianity not only against the Ariun threat but also against pagan and Jewish opposition. Other influential works include his Easter or Festal Letter of 367 which is often credited as being the earliest surviving statement of the New Testament canon.

“The whole world is against you!” a colleague once exclaimed to Athanasius when it looked like the entire Roman empire was lapsing into Arianism. Unperturbed, Athanasius replied, “Then it is Athanasius against the world.” These words (usually known in Latin: Athanasius contra mundum) have rung out down the halls of history as an inspiration to all those who have held fast to the truth against powerful opposition. Reflecting on this in his introduction to a translation of On the Incarnation, C.S. Lewis commented:

He stood for the Trinitarian doctrine, ‘whole and undefiled,’ when it looked as if all the civilized world was slipping back from Christianity into the religion of Arius – into one of those ‘sensible’ synthetic religions which are so strongly recommended today and which, then as now, included among their devotees many highly cultivated clergymen. It is his glory that he did not move with the times…

Perpetua: Contending for the Faith

In 202 AD, Emperor, Septimius Severus enacted a law prohibiting anyone to convert to Christianity. Perpetua was among thousands of Christians who died rather than deny Christ.

Persecution Under Severus

The date is 202 and the Roman emperor, Septimius Severus, has just enacted a law prohibiting the spread of Christianity and Judaism throughout the Roman empire.

Alarmed by the steady growth of Christianity (which may have been as much as 40% per decade throughout the second century), Emperor Septimius hopes his decree will contain the Christian threat and strengthen his kingdom.

Persecution was nothing new to Christians in the early third century. But this was the first time there was a universal decree forbidding conversion. If someone was discovered to have become a Christian, the choice offered by the emperor was simple.  One could either curse Jesus and make an offering to the Roman gods or be executed.

“Many martyrs are daily burned, confined, or beheaded, before our eyes,” observed Clement of Alexandria, describing conditions during the “terrible reign” of Severus.

One particularly moving story from this period concerns the martyrdom of the young mother, Perpetua.

Under House Arrest

Perpetua was a noblewoman living in Carthage at the beginning of the 3rd century. Although it was unusual for women of that time to be educated, Perpetua was able to read and write. Indeed, she has left us an account of the events leading up to her martyrdom.  Hers is the earliest known document written by a Christian woman.

In 203, when Perpetua was around twenty-one years old, she was preparing for baptism along with four other converts from Carthage.  They also included a young woman named Felicity, who was eight months pregnant.

When the Roman authorities in Carthage learned of the conversions, Perpetua and her companions were taken to a dwelling.  There they were put under house arrest.

Though under intense pressure from her pagan father to renounce the Christian faith, and still nursing her newborn son, Perpetua was determined to remain faithful to Christ.

From House Arrest to Jail

It soon became clear that the company were to be moved to an actual jail.  Because of that, the local church authorities allowed them to be baptized ahead of their formal training. They received the sacrament of holy baptism and the Eucharist.  Then the five converts prayed for strength to endure to the very end. One can only imagine Perpetua’s agony when the day finally arrived and she was sent to prison.  Her baby, utterly dependent on his mother for sustenance, was stripped from her arms.

A Roman prison was a foul place and this was no exception. The five converts were put in a windowless cellar, where there was no means of escape from the hot stifling air.

Despite the dismal and unsanitary conditions of the dark cell, Perpetua’s worst torment was the thought of her child left helpless without her. However, two church deacons bribed the jailer to move them to a better part of the prison. It was here that Perpetua received a visit from her Christian mother.  She brought her grandson, now faint with hunger, to be suckled. For the remainder of her time in jail, Perpetua was allowed to keep the child with her. Because she was a woman of high birth, she was also allowed to keep a diary.

“I am a Christian”

When the day of the trial finally arrived, the prisoners were brought before a tribunal, where Perpetua’s father was also waiting. Appealing to her love for him and her child, the elderly man tried in vain to persaude his daughter renounce her beliefs. Hilarian the procurator urged her similarly, saying, “Spare your father’s grey hairs. Spare the infancy of the boy. Make sacrifice for the Emperors’ prosperity.”

Perpetua answered simply, “I am a Christian.” This left Hilarian with no choice but to pass sentence. Perpetua, along with the others, was condemned to be killed in the stadium for the amusement of the crowds. Even at this point it was not too late for them to go free if they would simply agree to renounce Christ.

Martyrdom of Perpetua

Thus it was that on March 7, 203, Perpetua and the other converts were marched to the Carthaginian amphitheatre amid jeering crowds. Perpetua and Felicity were stripped naked and made to put on a net before entering the arena. A mad heifer had been prepared for the purpose of kicking, knocking and trampling the netted girls to death.

Though she was only twenty-one years old and still nursing her infant boy, Perpetua was put to the sword for not denying Christ.

However, when they were brought into the arena, even the callous Romans shuddered to see the tender girls.  A contemorary account says milk was still dripping from Perpetua’s breasts. Consequently, Perpetua and Felicity were recalled and given robes with which to clothe themselves.

Even after being attacked by the cow, Perpetua did not die, but courageously stood up. Though covered in blood, she helped Felicity to her feet. Then she turned to her Christian friends in the audience.  She encouraged them and urged them to stand firm in the faith and to love one another.

A swordsman was appointed with the task of completing what the cow had started. The man was a novice, so instead of piercing Perpetua right through, the blade accidently hit her collar bone. She shrieked but did not die.

Unafraid of death, the bleeding Perpetua picked up the blade and set it upon her own neck, in order that the swordsman might finish the job.

Why Were the Christians Persecuted?

So why were gentle Christians like Perpetua seen as such a hazard to Rome? Why did the emperor Severus believe that Christianity threatened the very being of his empire?

This question is especially puzzling when we realize that Rome tolerated all manner of different religious movements. In the city of Rome, for example, there was an array of various mystery cults. These were imported from all over the empire, but especially from the East. They offered their votaries privileged access to certain divinities but – and this is crucial – they did not dictate how life should be lived in the public world. It is this last point which helps to explain why Christianity was so different. Like the new age movements of today, the mystery cults occupied themselves entirely with one’s interior spirituality.

Over and above the vast array of mystery cults available to Romans stood the religion of the State. In contrast to the mystery cults, the imperial religion was public, structuring the lives of loyal Roman citizens.

The main feature of the imperial religion was not emperor worship, as is often imagined. It is true that many of the Julio-Claudian emperors claimed to be sons of a god, with some of them even claiming divine honors for themselves. However, this emerged out of, and did not form the basis of, the imperial religion.  The latter revolved around loyalty to the empire. Such loyalty involved more than merely paying taxes and defending one’s country. It involved bringing all of public life, thought and allegiance into subjection to the priorities of the state.

Rome’s Religion – Public and Political

The Roman state offered a vision of the good life and peace for its citizens.  It brought together previously warring pluralities.  Moreover, the Roman state offered a sense of eschatological progress.  Above all it provided a framework of meaning to answer the question “how should we live?” In short, the commitment that Rome demanded of its citizens was so complete that it can only be adequately described in religious terms.  This was despite the fact that many votaries of the state would not have considered themselves Rome-worshipers.

Unlike the mystery religions, which were private and personal, the religion demanded by Rome was public and political. As Stephen Perks observed in his book Common-Law Wives and Concubines:

“The Eastern cults that were popular in ancient Rome, such as the cults of Mithras and Isis, did not structure the lives of their adherents – at least not if they were good Roman citizens. What structured the lives of the Romans was the religion of Rome, which was a political religion.”

Against this backdrop it is not hard to see why Christianity threatened the imperial credo while the mystery cults did not. The Christians, like the Caesars, applied the language of evangelion (“gospel” or “glad tidings”) to their movement. Like Rome, the Christians taught that they held the answer for bringing justice, order and peace to the world. (See Luke 2:13-14; John 14:27).  Christianity, like the Romans, claimed that a single man had rightful dominion over the whole earth (See Matt. 28:18-19). Christianity, like the imperial religion, offered a sense of community to previously warring pluralities (See Gal. 3:28). Furthermore, Christianity, like the religion of Rome, was intent on evangelizing the world.

The Good News is bad news for Caesar

But whereas the Caesars sought to Romanise the world through brutality, force and bloodshed, the Christians sought to evangelize the world through love, self-giving, and sacrifice. The glad tidings of Jesus was therefore bad news for Caesar, since it proclaimed there was another way to transform the world superior to Caesar’s way. It announced that God had called out a people whose vocation was to work for peace and justice on Jesus’ terms, not Caesar’s.

Ruins of the amphitheatre in Carthage where Perpetua was martyred.

Had Christianity been merely one more mystery cult, offering its followers a new kind of spiritual experience, the Romans would have taken little or no notice of individuals like Perpetua. It was precisely because the totalising claims of Christ’s lordship competed at the level of the public imperial religion that Christianity could not be ignored.

Gospel is transforming nations

As Peter Leithart has observed in his book, Against Christianity, in the early church we do not find an essentially private gospel only secondarily applied to the public sphere, as if the public implications of the gospel were a second story built on the private ground floor. Rather, the Gospel is the announcement that a new creation has burst in upon the old order, transforming, not just individuals, but nations.

Even when the early Christians submitted to the ruling authorities, there was an implicit challenge. In writing to the Romans, Paul made clear that the reason Christians were to submit to the civil magistrates is because they have been placed there by the higher authority of God (See Romans 13:1). Though the Caesars liked to think of themselves as autonomous and subject to no one, Christians proclaimed that earthly rulers are God’s ministers, responsible for carrying out His business here on earth (cf Rom. 13:2-7). The idea that Caesar’s authority was derivative rather than ultimate was nothing less than fighting talk.

Personal Challenge

This helps us to understand why simply claiming the name of Christ was seen by Emperor Severus as being a subversive act. It also presents a challenge to us. We live in an age when there is mounting pressure to keep religion as a personal, private experience detached from the outward realm of public life.  By coincidence, much modern Christianity resembles a 1st century mystery religion.  It offers a new type of religious experience but makes little or no demands in the public square.

It is against such pressures that the witness of Perpetua still challenges us. Her martyrdom should convict us for accepting watered-down versions of the Gospel that may be devotionally inspiring but make no demands on our public life.

Perpetua challenges us to be a challenge to today’s Caesar.  Her courage to stand firm for Jesus against the entire Imperial system inspires us to play our part against the ungodly political systems of our day.

Police chief, refuse woke apology

A police chief has refused to apologise to the woke community.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson has dared to swim against the tide, in a culture increasingly governed by the dictates of political correctness,

His recent refusal to issue a sweeping apology to the gender ideology advocates — in contrast to police chiefs from across the UK — is a breath of fresh air in a stifling climate of virtue-signalling and ideological pressure.

Instead of parroting the mantra of “institutional guilt,”  the GMP chief has chosen to speak truth with measured dignity, acknowledging past imperfections without sacrificing the honour of those who served faithfully.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

Refusal to apologise branded as “insult”

Veteran homosexuality campaigner, Peter Tatchell, branded the decision an “insult.” But in truth, what Mr Tatchell demands is not justice — it is ideological submission. Apologies, when not rooted in real repentance for personal wrongdoing, become nothing more than theatre.

Mr. Watson rightly called it out for what it is: “superficial and merely performative.” His refusal to apologise for sins he did not commit shows moral clarity in a time when even pastors, politicians, and parents are bullied into appeasing the loudest voices.

There is no virtue in pretending that an entire institution was rotten to the core. As Chief Constable Watson rightly pointed out, thousands of officers over the decades have served “with decency, professionalism and compassion.” And yet, the wokedom elite insist that even those who upheld the law with integrity must now bow before the rainbow flag and offer penance for the past. This is not humility; it is coercion — a false gospel of identity politics demanding collective guilt.

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

When Apologies Become Idols

In today’s topsy-turvy Britain, apologies are no longer about righting wrongs but about paying homage to new cultural idols. And none looms larger in the modern pantheon than the “LGBTQ+ movement”. The moment a public figure declines to apologise, the mob descends with cries of outrage.

But are these apologies truly about reconciliation? Or are they the golden calves of our generation — demanded, displayed, and worshipped?

Mr. Tatchell claims that apologies are “acts of justice.” But justice in Scripture is rooted in truth, not ideology.

Micah 6:8 Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.

For many of us who still hold to traditional values, it is wearying to see institution after institution cave under pressure. Schools teach our children that gender is fluid. Churches fly rainbow flags and ignore the call to repentance. Truth becomes the casualty of cultural compliance.

The Tyranny of Wokeness

Chief Constable Watson’s stance exposes a much deeper sickness in our society — the tyranny of wokeness. Even those who see through its lies often hide under its umbrella for fear of being cancelled.

The “apology culture” is not about accountability. It is about power. It seeks to silence dissent and force conformity, even from those whose consciences urge caution.

Sir James Anderton, the former GMP chief, remains a figure of controversy, particularly for his comments during the AIDS crisis. And while his words were undoubtedly harsh, they reflected a moral clarity and a concern for public health that is now unthinkable in public discourse.

Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire

We are not advocating cruelty or persecution — far from it. Christians are called to compassion and care for all. But compassion does not require affirmation. Nor does disagreement equal discrimination. To apologise for historic policing of illegal acts, judged by today’s standards, is not justice — it is historical revisionism.

Sadly, many Christians have lost their prophetic voice in the public square. The Church once spoke with clarity on matters of morality. Today, many pulpits are silent, or worse — complicit. Let us pray for leaders like Watson, who will not bow to the golden calf of wokeness.

The Real Victims Silenced

While Peter Tatchell calls for apologies to be offered to “LGBTQ+ communities”, one wonders where his concern is for the countless Christians who have been marginalised, harassed, or investigated simply for expressing biblical beliefs. Street preachers arrested. Teachers fired. Nurses silenced. Where are their apologies? Where is their justice?

This selective outrage is what makes the modern woke movement so dangerous. It masquerades as inclusive, yet it excludes those who hold to a biblical worldview. Chief Watson’s letter rightly questioned the utility of symbolic gestures, especially when they “make little or no difference to developing contemporary practice.” Wokeness is about symbolism, not substance.

When police resources are diverted to appease lobby groups rather than protect the public, everyone suffers. GMP should focus on combatting knife crime, tackling drug gangs, and supporting vulnerable victims — not appeasing historical activists with choreographed contrition. Even more so when those activists will never be satisfied until all dissenting voices are silenced.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.

A Light in the Darkness

The Church must take note. We too are being pressed on every side to compromise. But we are not called to please man, but God.

Galatians 1:10 Do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

We cannot serve Christ and cultural idols. We must be salt and light — not sugar and shadow.

Let us support those in public life who speak truthfully and act with integrity. And let us hold fast to the truth that sets people free — the truth of God’s Word. Not all will applaud us. But our calling is not popularity. It is faithfulness.

In the days ahead, we will need more leaders like Stephen Watson — principled, respectful, and unashamed of truth. May God raise up such voices across every sphere of society. And may the Church once again lead the way, not by pandering to culture, but by proclaiming Christ without fear. Amen.

Antichristian Training Network Revealed

In the Daily Sceptic on 5th June 2025, researcher Charlotte Gill asked ‘What do Miatta Fahnbulleh (she’s Labour’s Minister for, or should that be ‘against’, Energy Consumers), the pro-Hamas, anti-Israel commentator Grace Blakeley and pro-migrant lobbyist Zoe Gardner have in common?

Well, it turns out they have all received media training from the New Economy Organisers Network (or ‘NEON’), which you might never have heard of.

So let’s take a look at this right-on NEON, see what it does, who funds it, and ask how well its anti-growth, antichristian, anti-market vision of state control sits with the anti-life, anti-family death-wish of the United Kingdom’s godless elites. We’ll speak of biblical economics and find wisdom in both the Bible and some lyrics of Johnny Cash.

NEON training the blob’s new recruits

Not just the three women I’ve mentioned, but thousands of young aspiring statist organisers and campaigners are supported by NEON across the UK.

They’ve been through NEON’s Networking, Media, Global Messaging or Press Officer Training programmes or Workshops on Transformative Organising. NEON is actively building networks of its latest recruits to the UK’s sprawling elite blob.

Miatta Fahnbulleh
Miatta Fahnbulleh MP – Member of the elite and and New Economics Foundation and NEON insider.

This NEON has apparently been ‘given birth’, their expression, by the New Economics Foundation. And would you believe it, Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at Ed Miliband’s Department of Energy Insecurity and Net Zero Fanaticism, was previously Chief Executive of the New Economics Foundation.

She’s a member of SERA – Labour’s Environment Campaign, and on a Government page she tells us ‘a family member works for Renewables UK.’ Are you surprised? She supports the World Economic Forum and its Green New Deal.

Miatta might well have come with her family as a refugee from Liberia, but without a shadow of a doubt, she is now an insiders’ insider.

NEON funders support anti-family LGBT

The Bible tells:
Psalm 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed,

NEON has a string of right-on philanthropic foundations behind it. Many, if not all, of them are also supporting the climate change lobby. But many of the funders of NEON are already known to us as funders of abortion, homosexual and trans lobby groups, actively working against God’s institution of the family, even against his creation of us as male and female or against human life itself.

For example, its leading funder Lankelly Chase has also backed Greater Manchester Trans Organisers Fund and the LGBT Foundation.

NEON patron George Soros’s Open Society Foundation also lavishly funds the pro-gay KELIN NGO and UHAI East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative lurking in Kenya. See our video below:

The Oak Foundation, started by British billionaire Alan Parker, funds NEON as well as the pro-gay pro-trans Astraea Lesbian Foundation in the US, Human Dignity Trust and above all, OutRight Action. Oak supports countless initiatives to legalise sodomy and transgenderism across the developing world.

NEON patron The William & Flora Hewlett Foundation has also given $1.5 million to International Planned Parenthood, the world’s leading abortionist, as well as grants for ‘Queer Studies’.

Lottery tops list of UK LGBT funders

In 2023, NEON patron the Paul Hamlyn Foundation was actually ahead of Oak Foundation, but behind the UK Government, the Scottish Government, Children in Need, the Arts Council and the National Lottery in a list of UK organisations who splashed money to LGBT groups. Paul Hamlyn gave NEON £50,000, but £775,000 to LGBT causes.

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust gave NEON £85,000 and LGBT groups £400,000 in the same year.

Well, they can run on for a long time, as Johnny Cash sang, but sooner or later:
Psa 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
Psa 2:5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

New Economics

Both NEF and NEON campaign for ‘A new social settlement’, which ‘will ensure people are paid well, have more time off to spend with their families, and have access to the things we all need for a decent life’.

A Marxist utopian dream like that would cost you and every other taxpayer a lot of money. It’s a counterfeit of the Biblical millennial vision:
Micah 4:4 But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.

You need to be very afraid of the WEF’s ‘Green New Deal’, which NEF and NEON say will ‘reduce the carbon we emit and massively boost nature, while creating a new generation of jobs’.

Do they know they are lying? They must do. The Bible says:
Psa 101:7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

net Zero is destroying the environment

Here is the truth: The Net Zero fantasy is currently destroying the environment. Look at the prime forests being cut down to provide wood chip for the Drax power station, or the devastation which mining for cobalt and lithium for batteries is causing.

Meanwhile, Green New Deal is destroying British jobs and whole industries together with our food and energy security and our defence capabilities. So, of course, is the current unfettered illegal immigration by young Muslim men of fighting age so loved by the likes of NEON’s Zoe Gardner.

NEON also want a ‘democratic economy’ to devolve state power and transform ownership of the economy to give us all an equal stake in the places where we live and work’.

I don’t know what they think ‘the economy’ is. But the economy is not a mystery. It is inherently democratic, if governments would only keep their state-controlling fingers out of it. The landowner in the Lord’s parable articulated a biblical principle which strikes down mandates for electric cars and heat pumps:
Matt 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own?

The truth about ‘the market’

The market is, or should be, people freely buying and selling goods and services.
That’s the Biblical understanding existing from the dawn of time, even in Sodom during the days of Lot, so the Lord Jesus taught:
Luke 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

The Lord uses so many metaphors about buying and selling, and he famously overturned the tables of the corrupt cartels fleecing the people in the temple in Jerusalem.

NEON claim the economy has been ‘redesigned over the past 40 years in favour of the market rather than people and planet.’ It’s nonsense. Even if it were true, our Lord is in favour of honest open markets where people are free to do what they wish with their money.

They idea that the economy should be subservient to ‘the planet’ and that a transparent market place does not favour the people and must be ‘redesigned’ is sounding like state control to me.

State Control and Fascism

And the Bible tells us that is the elite’s plan:
Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

That’s fascism and it comes with NEON’s added ingredients of ‘climate justice’, that’ll be Net Zero, ‘anti-racism’, which means Black Livcs Matter and ‘critical race theory’ and unfettered immigration, both despising and attacking our Christian heritage at the same time.

Prayer for our leaders

Please pray into this, pray for a change of heart for Miatta, and pray the Lord will raise up a leader, an able, God-fearing, honest man of truth, to root out these antichristian elites and proclaim the Kingship of Jesus Christ and our Christian Constitution.

GP practice under investigation over children’s gender care

WellBN GP practice- Brighton
WellBN GP practice- Brighton

An investigation into a GP clinic in Brighton that prescribed transgender hormones to children has been launched by the NHS.

The WellBN GP practice, which runs three clinics in Sussex, was ordered by health service leaders to stop prescribing cross-sex hormones to under 18s and the NHS has now launched a “rapid investigation”.

The NHS Sussex Integrated Care Board, which oversees the region’s health services, said that the actions of GPs at WellBN “may fall outside of national clinical policy and guidance”.

The swift response from health authorities, initiating a rapid investigation, is both telling and necessary.

Our children—fearfully and wonderfully made—deserve the utmost caution, wisdom, and prayerful discernment when facing life-altering decisions.

The Bible says,
Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea

Stop Transgenderism Now!

Paused Prescriptions and the Price of Delay

WellBN claims it has paused all new hormone prescriptions for children. But the clinic’s own statement betrays its intent: it hopes to “turn this around.”

This is not a sign of repentance but of reluctance. The deeper issue remains: what was happening before scrutiny arrived? How long were these drugs being given out without full clinical oversight?

The pause may seem a temporary administrative decision, but it raises urgent questions about the balance between so-called “medical autonomy” and the duty to protect children from experimental ideology.

This isn’t the first time Christian Voice has sounded the alarm. We warned of this in “Parental Rights and Professional Duties” — when parental voices are sidelined, and the state or medical elite claim unchecked authority, the family is weakened and the child exposed.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death

Clinical Guidance Abandoned for Activism

NHS Sussex has confirmed that WellBN may have operated outside national clinical policy. That alone should stop the nation in its tracks.

Why do guidelines exist, if not to protect vulnerable patients from reckless practices? Why does public trust rest in the hands of professionals, if those hands are unbound by the standards that protect lives?

The NHS now says it will review each child’s case alongside NHS England—a sobering admission that something has gone deeply wrong.

1 Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Return to the UK’s Christian Constitution →

Discernment, Not Dogma

Each child affected by this scandal will now undergo a review. It’s a slow, case-by-case process, but one that is finally being done in line with national standards.

Some will be referred to specialist NHS gender services; others to mental health professionals or endocrinologists. What is most shocking is that it took public exposure for this to begin.

The Church has long warned against one-size-fits-all solutions, especially in matters as delicate as identity and psychological distress. True care is not about affirmation—it is about understanding. It is about helping young people navigate hardship without rushing to chemical or surgical “solutions” that silence rather than heal.

We are reminded:
Proverbs 14:15 The prudent man looketh well to his going.

A Culture in Crisis, A Child in Confusion

To its credit, the NHS has launched a dedicated helpline for children affected by WellBN’s care. That is a start—but how many children have already been hurt?

How many families blindsided by a system that champions ideology over biology? We are not watching medicine in action; we are watching a nation unravelling its own moral compass.

When institutions fail in that calling, the Church must rise. The helpline is a bandage—what we need is repentance, reform, and restoration of order. We must love these children enough to tell them the truth, not rewire their bodies to conform to confusion.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

That way is not through puberty blockers or synthetic hormones—it is through patience, faith, truth, and love.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The WellBN case is a flashing red light in the soul of our nation. If even a GP practice can become captive to cultural confusion, where else has this ideology crept unchecked? This is a call to all believers—to parents, pastors, and policy-makers: Be alert. Be bold. Be biblical.

If the Church stays silent while they are handed over to experimental medicine, then we too will answer before the Lord.

Abortionists calling themselves ‘Doctors for Choice’ (what choice does the baby have?) are to hold an all-day conference in South London on Friday 20th June. They are openly calling for abortion to be decriminalised with no limits on gestational age, to align England & Wales with Northern Ireland and impose on the United Kingdom the most extreme anti-life legislation possible.

Christian Voice will be present outside, by the grace of God, handing out these leaflets: What were You in your Mother’s Womb to those attending, asking them just what they were when they were in their mother’s womb. It’s the question abortionists will never answer. If you weren’t a human being in there, what were you? But the psalmist says that was ‘me’ in my mother’s womb:

Yesterday, MPs voted not to prosecute any woman for having an abortion up to birth, in effect, to legitimise ‘back-street’ abortions. On Friday, they will vote on assisted dying. Email your MP on either matter or both (send separate emails) now from the link below:

What’s involved

We are praying the Lord will raise up those will come out on to the street outside the Fetal Medicine Research Institute, 16-20 Windsor Walk London SE5 8BB at 9.00am on Friday 20th June 2025 to support this outreach to the UK’s leading abortionists.

Jobs involve giving out leaflets/tracts (PDF HERE – it’s folded DL – feel free to use it elsewhere – use 160gm card ), holding cameras/phones, witnessing and just being there in support. We shall be on the public highway.

Take the Windsor Walk exit at Denmark Hill Station

Public transport will be your best bet. Denmark Hill Station (DMK) is a stone’s throw away. Take the Windsor Walk exit and turn left out of the station. In addition, buses 40, 176, 185, 484 come from Lewisham Station, Dulwich Library or Penge. Aim for the stainless steel pregnant woman statue at the western end of Windsor Walk. Our evangelistic prophetic witness follows on from our successful endeavours in December 2024. See how well they went, by the grace of God:

The conference is called: ‘Breaking siloes: abortion beyond the clinic’. (There was a time when abortionists raised the dread spectre of ‘back-street abortions’. Now they campaign for it. But of course it’s all about ‘Pills by Post’ these days.)

It is being convened by ‘Doctors for Choice UK (DFCUK)’, an offshoot of the heavily pro-abortion Royal College of Obstretricians and Gynaecologists and its ‘Faculty of Reproductive Health’ (which believes there is a ‘human right’ to abortion – there isn’t) together with ‘Abortion Talk’, which ‘fights abortion stigma’.

There are apparently people around (people like us) who think that shedding innocent blood isn’t quite what a civilised society, one without a death-wish, should be doing. The Bible tells us innocent blood defiles the land:

The abortionists will repair to the Phoenix pub afterwards - where we can engage with them.
The abortionists will repair to the Phoenix pub afterwards – where we can engage with them.

Deut 19:10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

To hold such a conference at the Fetal Medicine Research Institute, dedicated to saving infant life in the womb, is a macabre twist. It’s a all-day programme, and afterwards they are planning to socialise at the nearby Phoenix Pub, situated on the railway bridge, from 17:00 hrs or 5pm. Thanks for the invite!

‘The joint Abortion Talk and Doctors for Choice conference returns for its second year!

‘This time, we aim to break abortion siloes by centering our focus on abortion outside the clinic, locating abortion within broader feminist movements for autonomy, self-determination, and justice.

‘Expect panels on the solidarity between diverse, ongoing struggles for bodily autonomy (including the movements for sex workers’ rights and trans rights); the grassroots feminist activism of ‘abortion accompaniement’; and challenging stigma from an intersectional perspective.

‘All income raised from the conference will go to Abortion Talk to help with its mission of destigmatising abortion, one conversation at a time.’

The evangelistic prophetic witness follows on from our successful endeavours outside the Royal College of Obstetricians (Video) and the Royal College of Nursing (Video) in December 2024.

MP to table pro-death amendment

Meanwhile, Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi is poised to table an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill at its Report Stage. Christian Voice warns that the move could represent “the biggest threat to the unborn since 1967.”

Abortion on demand up to birth is a direct challenge to the sanctity of human life, a concept foundational to our Christian faith and a core tenet of God’s unchanging law:

Gen 4:10 And he (God) said (to Cain), What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

This amendment seeks to further dismantle the already fragile protections afforded to the unborn, paving the way for a more permissive and ultimately, more barbaric, abortion regime.

As faithful Christians, we are called to be watchmen on the wall, sounding the alarm against such spiritual darkness. We must act now, making our voices heard in the halls of power, for the lives of countless innocents hang in the balance.

Exodus 20:13 You shall not kill. (H: ‘ratsach’: ‘murder’)

Decriminalisation: Code for abortion on demand, up to birth

The seemingly benign term “decriminalisation” masks a radical agenda that seeks to remove all legal safeguards for the unborn.

This push by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, and supported by bodies like the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), aims to treat abortion not as a regrettable last resort, but rebranded as a routine medical procedure, free from the few remaining legal constraints.

This is a profound betrayal of the Hippocratic Oath, which historically pledged to protect life. Instead, the RCOG, under the guise of “choice,” is promoting a system where unborn children can be legally eliminated at any stage of development. It means the potential for abortion on demand, at any stage of pregnancy, up to the very moment of birth.

The current law, however flawed, at least acknowledges the gravity of taking a human life. Decriminalisation would effectively declare open season on the unborn, enshrining a culture of death where convenience trumps life. This is a chilling prospect, utterly at odds with the Christian understanding of human dignity from conception.

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.

Proverbs 24:11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.

The legislative pathway to perdition

The chosen vehicle for this radical abortion amendment – the Crime and Policing Bill – is itself a cynical tactic to bypass proper scrutiny and public debate.

This crucial piece of legislation, designed to address law and order, is being hijacked to usher in changes that could fundamentally alter the legal status of the unborn.

The amendment will be tabled at the Report Stage, a point in the parliamentary process where significant changes can be introduced with less public attention than earlier stages. This deliberate maneuver highlights the desperation of those who seek to push through this extreme agenda.

We urge all faithful to monitor this bill closely, understand its stages, and continue to pressure our representatives to resist this stealth attack on innocent life. The parliamentary process, meant to protect, is being perverted to destroy.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

The Pro-Abortion Machine vs. The Pro-Life Resistance

As the battle for the unborn intensifies, we see the forces of death organising their ranks.

In 2025, several abortion-related conferences are scheduled, including “Breaking Silos: abortion beyond the clinic” organised by “Doctors for Choice UK and Abortion Talk.” This chilling title reveals their ambition: to normalise and expand abortion beyond all conventional boundaries, stripping away its last vestiges of medical and moral scrutiny.

Yet, against this darkness, the light of truth continues to shine. While the abortion industry seeks to dismantle all barriers, we, the defenders of life, are called to stand firm, to pray, and to educate, equipping our youth to be unwavering voices for the voiceless.

This session contrasts the pro-abortion “Breaking Silos” conference, its organisers, and its dangerous agenda to normalise abortion “beyond the clinic” with the hopeful resistance offered by SPUC’s pro-life youth conference, underscoring the ongoing ideological and spiritual battle.

Bible Verse: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Unmasking the abortion agenda and defending life

The battle against the Tonia Antoniazzi amendment and the broader decriminalisation agenda is far from over. While the exact date for the amendment to be tabled remains unannounced, our vigilance must not waver. The phone number for the Government whips’ office has been provided for those brave enough to challenge the political establishment directly. This is a call to action for every Christian: pray fervently, speak boldly, and act decisively.

Holding the conference in  the “Fetal Medicine Research Institute”, dedicated to saving life in the womb, serves as a stark reminder of how deeply embedded this culture of death is within our medical elite, even within seemingly neutral scientific and academic spheres. We must continue to expose the dark underbelly of this industry, educate others on the truth about life in the womb, and tirelessly advocate for legal protections that truly reflect God’s reverence for every human life, from conception to natural death. Our ultimate hope lies not in earthly laws alone, but in the power of God to transform hearts and minds, turning our nation back towards the path of life.

Key issues for this final session include the continuing uncertainty of the amendment’s tabling date and the urgent call for Christians to contact government officials. It also warns against the pervasive influence of the culture of death, even within seemingly neutral institutions like “fetal medicine research institutes,” urging ongoing prayer, education, and advocacy.

Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Recent government data reveals a significant increase in welfare payments to households with at least one foreign national, reaching £941 million in March 2025, nearly doubling from £461 million in March 2022.

This surge now accounts for 15.5% of the total monthly Universal Credit spending.

The rise in claims has prompted discussions about the sustainability of the UK’s welfare system and its capacity to support both native

The current system may inadvertently incentivise migration by offering generous benefits, potentially straining public resources. Neil O’Brien, a former Tory health minister, highlighted concerns over the rapid growth of benefit spending and migration rates, suggesting that the government’s approach may be too lenient.

The surge in channel crossings

In the first half of 2025, the UK witnessed a significant increase in migrants crossing the English Channel, with over 14,800 individuals arriving by late May—a 42% rise compared to the same period in 2024.

Smuggling gangs have adapted new tactics by using larger boats, some carrying over 80 people, and launching from inland waterways to evade French police intervention.

The UK has invested £480 million to bolster French beach patrols, yet interception rates have declined, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current strategies.

Upon arrival, asylum seekers in the UK are entitled to basic support while their claims are processed.
This includes accommodation and a weekly allowance of £45 per person, or £9.10 if meals are provided.

Additional support is available for pregnant women and young children. However, asylum seekers are not permitted to work and have no access to mainstream benefits like Universal Credit unless granted refugee status.

Ask us to come and speak at your church →

Defense and border control expenditures

The UK has invested heavily in bolstering border security, including a £480 million agreement with France to enhance beach patrols and curb Channel crossings.

Despite this, interception rates have declined, with French authorities intercepting only 184 out of 1,378 migrants attempting to cross on a single day in May 2025.

The UK Coastguard has also been overwhelmed by migrant rescue operations, highlighting the strain on border control resources .

Meanwhile, in response to the increasing number of Channel crossings, UK ministers are drafting new legislation to fast-track the removal of asylum seekers arriving from countries deemed “safe.”

The aim is to prevent prolonged stays in the asylum system for individuals from such countries. However, critics argue that deeming countries safe doesn’t account for individual persecution cases, emphasising the need for fair case-by-case evaluations .

The strategic defence review

The UK’s newly released Strategic Defence Review (SDR) reads more like a vision board than a battle plan. Full of buzzwords like “step change” and lofty claims about being at the “leading edge” of NATO innovation, it offers little substance on how Britain will actually defend its citizens in a rapidly deteriorating global climate.

In fact, Prime Minister Starmer’s assertion that Britain will lead in technology and tactics rings hollow when compared to the firepower and innovation of the United States, which dominates with its Silicon Valley networks and orbital infrastructure.

There is an alarming disconnect between the rhetoric and the reality. While Ukrainian soldiers face real bullets and missile strikes, the British government has spent the past year penning platitudes. A war is raging in Europe’s backyard, and yet Westminster seems more focused on reshaping internal committees than reinforcing its crumbling military readiness.

Scripture warns:
1 Corinthians 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

Delay, deflect, decline

The review’s few tangible promises are scattered and deferred. The idea of increasing soldier numbers “in the next parliament” puts any meaningful growth off until at least 2029.

Sir Starmer’s commitment to raising defence spending from 2.3% to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 is presented as bold—but it is dwarfed by both the needs of our military and the spending of our allies. His “ambition” to hit 3% is just that: ambition, not policy.

When defence minister John Healey talks about measuring arms innovation in “months not years,” he undermines himself by tying future growth to legislative cycles and parliamentary vagueness. The disconnect between urgency and action exposes the lack of conviction at the heart of this government.

They speak of “warfighting” as if saying the word enough times will conjure the readiness they have long neglected.

Jesus in Matthew 7:16 By their fruits ye shall know them.

It is not what a government says about defence, but what it does. And so far, what we see is procrastination in the face of growing peril.

The hollowed-out arsenal

Britain’s armed forces are not just underfunded—they are under-equipped, undermanned, and under-valued. The British Army has dwindled to just over 70,000 soldiers, its lowest number in 300 years.

Meanwhile, over 64,000 civil servants occupy positions in the Ministry of Defence. It’s as if the government believes paperwork can win a war.

Our naval defences fare no better. The ageing Vanguard-class submarines, vital to our nuclear deterrent, are creaking towards obsolescence.

A nation that neglects its defences, while evil advances, is one that has forgotten its duty before God.

1 Corinthians 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

Diversity over defence

One would expect our Royal Air Force (RAF) to be at the forefront of protecting British skies. Instead, reports suggest that its leadership has prioritised “diversity targets” over defence capability. In fact, internal policies have even skirted legality in the pursuit of inclusion metrics. The RAF has become a case study in how ideology, not mission, is driving decisions.

There’s a place for fairness and opportunity in every institution. But when those principles overshadow the very purpose of a military service—national defence—then we have strayed. It appears the real battle being fought by the RAF is not in the skies, but in boardrooms dominated by HR language and political virtue-signalling.

2 Timothy 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

A nation unready for evil days

While Russia tests hypersonic missiles, uses Iranian drones, and receives covert support from China and North Korea, the UK tinkers with its defence spreadsheets. Cyber-attacks on hospitals, and sabotage of undersea infrastructure are already happening. And still, the SDR speaks in vague tones, disconnected from the gathering storm.

There is little mention in the review of the growing threat posed by hostile foreign powers operating through covert and hybrid means.

Our adversaries are not waiting for Britain to catch up. They are already at work, infiltrating, undermining, and preparing. It is folly to meet calculated aggression with committee-based complacency.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

In a recent move, Avanti West Coast introduced a scheme offering free period care products on its trains.

Notably, the announcement referred to recipients as “customers” and “people,” omitting any mention of “women” or “females,” according to the Telegraph.

This choice of language has sparked criticism, with some accusing the company of erasing the very group primarily affected by menstruation.

This trend isn’t isolated. The Welsh Parliament faced backlash for providing tampons in men’s toilets, aiming to accommodate “transgender” individuals. This is a “waste of taxpayer cash” and a “virtue-signalling” gesture.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

The gender-neutral language

The push for gender-neutral terminology, while aiming for “inclusivity”, often leads to the unintended consequence of sidelining women. By avoiding specific references to “women” in contexts inherently tied to female biology, there’s a risk of diminishing the recognition of women’s unique experiences and needs.

For instance, the General Medical Council stocked tampons in men’s toilets to be “inclusive,” a move that some found perplexing and indicative of a broader trend of blurring gender distinctions .

Scripture warns against such confusion. Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.

The importance of upholding truth in compassion

While it’s essential to approach all individuals with love and compassion, it’s equally crucial to uphold truth.

The Christian faith teaches:
1 Corinthians 13:6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth.

In the context of gender and identity, this means recognising and affirming the biological realities that God has established.

Efforts to accommodate diverse identities should not come at the expense of denying fundamental truths. As believers, we’re called to speak the truth in love, ensuring that compassion doesn’t lead to compromise.

Moreso, institutions, especially those in the public sphere, have a responsibility to reflect and uphold the natural order as designed by God. By adopting policies that obscure or redefine gender distinctions, they risk leading society away from biblical truths.

The Bible states,
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Advocating for clarity and truth in public discourse

In light of these developments, it’s imperative for Christians to engage in public discourse, advocating for clarity and truth.

This involves respectfully challenging narratives that blur gender distinctions and promoting language that accurately represents God’s creation.

As the Apostle Paul exhorted,
Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Aldi goes woke, puts children at risk

Aldi's new marketing statement.
Aldi's new marketing statement.
Aldi's new marketing statement.
Aldi’s new marketing statement.

The UK branch of the Southern German supermarket chain, Aldi, known to many families through the harmless antics of Kevin the Carrot, is irresponsibly sending its customers’ children down the ‘trans’ pathway, forgetting its foundation in family values.

In a shocking act of moral capitulation, Aldi has gone “woke,” publishing a two-page spread in their 1st June 2025 promotion leaflet, brazenly headed ‘Shine Bright, Shine Proud’. The Bible says:

Prov 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

The declaration is unmistakable: ‘At Aldi, we’re proud to raise the pride flag in support of the LGBTQIA+ community and our colleagues. Together, we can achieve more!’ This is no mere corporate slogan; it is a full-throated endorsement of an ideology that stands in direct opposition to God’s divine order for humanity.

For a family-friendly supermarket to raise the standard of “Pride” is to declare itself an adversary of Christian truth and a purveyor of moral confusion to our children.

Christian Voice has reached out to Aldi for their comment on these grave concerns but, as of publication, we are yet to receive a response.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

What does ‘LGBTQIA+’ mean for children?

Aldi, in its hubris, demands we accept its “Pride,” but do they even know what it stands for? What do the letters LGBTQIA actually represent, and why the ever-expanding “plus” sign?

For the sake of clarity, the acronym encompasses Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (or Questioning) – whatever that is – Intersex – those individuals merely lumped in for marketing purposes – and Asexual, presumably walking along in the hubristically-named Pride parade with a placard saying ‘I don’t fancy anyone. I’m an oppressed minority’.

Aldi 1st June 2025 promotional leaflet page 20
Aldi 1st June 2025 promotional leaflet page 20

The ominous “plus-sign” mops up anyone they haven’t thought of yet – perhaps even people attracted to trees, or those who tragically think they are a cat, for such delusions now exist, and join the parade.

Homosexual activity, once rightly called ‘sodomy’ and ‘gross indecency’, is now legalised across the UK, with “gay marriage” and the ability for gays and lesbians to adopt or even acquire children through taxpayer-funded IVF.

They infiltrate our military, civil service, politics, and mainstream media. The trans lobby has met a buffer, but is still promoted. The UK Government has set aside £40million to promote ‘LGBT+’ across the developing world.

Aldi’s treacherous alliance with pro-trans ‘switchboard’

Aldi 1st June 2025 promotional leaflet page 21
Aldi 1st June 2025 promotional leaflet page 21

How dare Aldi claim to be “family-friendly” while actively promoting a pro-gay, pro-trans contact group directly to children? We find ‘gay pride toys’ (with Kevin the Carrot reissued in rainbow colours), with donations to Switchboard for every sale) on page 20, seemingly targeted at toddlers.

Then, on page 21, a cherubic model, around thirteen years old by our estimation, stands as an unwitting face of this corruption. Buried at the bottom of that page is the promotion of ‘Switchboard’ – an anti-christian pressure group that started life as ‘Gay Switchboard’. Aldi claims Switchboard “offers a non-judgmental space,” but make no mistake, judgment is coming. The Bible says:

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Switchboard states its staff are ‘all LGBTQIA+’. Do Aldi genuinely think it’s a good idea to put children in touch with such an organisation? Aldi’s copy promises “a safe space to explore, talk and be truly heard about sexuality and gender identity.” “Truly heard” means not being contradicted, and “safe space” means parents are left in the dark.

Switchboard declares: ‘Whatever you tell us will stay between us.’ Does Aldi approve of cutting those of the customers who are parents out of their children’s emotional development and handing them over to pro-gay, pro-trans activists?

The Bible is clear: parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing, not the state, not gay activists, not supermarkets.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Return to the UK’s Christian Constitution →

Mutilation and madness

Aldi’s unholy alliance with Switchboard extends directly to the grotesque realities of transgender ideology. The ‘LGBTQIA+’ acronym includes ‘T’ for ‘transgender’, and Switchboard openly offers ‘gender-affirming care’ – a euphemism for confirming children in their gender confusion and pushing them down a path of irreversible harm.

Dr Hilary Cass
Dr Hilary Cass

Are Aldi even aware of the Supreme Court ruling of 16th April 2025 that unequivocally states ‘trans-women’ remain men, and that it is biologically impossible to change one’s sex? Do they know about the damning Cass Report, which urged “extreme caution” in treating gender-disturbed children and warned that “children are being used as a football” in this ideological battle? And Aldi, disgracefully, is now using children as a football to promote the evil of ‘Pride’!

Are they aware the UK Government has banned puberty blocker hormones for children? A GP practice in Brighton has only today been banned from offering ‘gender-affirming care’. See Here Do they accept these harmful medications amount to child abuse? Do Aldi approve of the barbaric mutilation of young women, having their healthy breasts removed because they wrongly believe they are men? Because mutilation, of breasts and even genitals, is where the transgender pathway leads – into a lifetime of pain, drugs, and profound regret.

Preserve childhood

The most fundamental demand of any parent is to “let children be children.” This means allowing them to grow, learn, and explore the world in a way that aligns with their natural development and the beautiful, undeniable truth of their God-given biological sex.

It means shielding them from the politically charged, ideologically driven agendas that seek to blur the lines of male and female. God created them male and female, distinctly and perfectly. To force upon young children complex, often sexualised, notions of “gender identity” is not only confusing but profoundly damaging.

It rips away their inherent security in their God-ordained identity and replaces it with a manufactured crisis of self.

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Do not fund an anti-christian agenda

Has Aldi’s customer research truly shown that its clientele will 100% approve of their blatant promotion of both homosexuality and gender confusion to small children? We highly suspect that Kyrsten Halley, Aldi’s Marketing Director, merely sought a “right-on bit of corporate virtue-signalling,” or rather, “vice-signalling,” without a thought for their customers or their children. Her email address is khalley@hotmail.co.uk

As of writing, Aldi has chosen to remain silent on our direct request for comment, further demonstrating their indifference to the legitimate concerns of families.

Aldi's Kevin the Carrot in 'Woke' rainbow colours: Not going in our basket!
Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot in ‘Woke’ rainbow colours: Not going in our basket!

Unless this Southern German supermarket chain repents and immediately pulls this disgraceful leaflet, there will be no more Aldi products in my house. Kevin the Carrot, in his rainbow colours, will not be in my basket. And I suspect you, our faithful readers, will feel the same.

2 Corinthians 6:14-17 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God…

NHS: Taxpayer Millions Fund Mutilation

Surgical Equipment. Image Source: Michigan Radio
Pro-Transgender ‘Pride Flag’ painted on a walkway at NHS Princess Royal Hospital, Orpington, England.

Around £20 million of your hard-earned taxpayer money have been shamefully squandered by the NHS over just three years. This vast sum was spent  on “feminising genital surgery” for biological men, including vulnerable teenagers.

The Telegraph’s investigation pulls back the curtain on this shocking expenditure, revealing a conveyor belt of irreversible procedures that leave young men infertile and often deeply regretful.

The very fabric of our society is being torn asunder, and the National Health Service, once a beacon of care, is now complicit in a grotesque betrayal of its founding principles.
We must ask ourselves, in a nation struggling with genuine health crises, why are we subsidising such radical and destructive interventions?

There is an increasing waiting lists for essential, life-saving treatments within the NHS. While patients languish, suffering real illnesses, millions are diverted to procedures that, by medical consensus, offer no inherent health benefit and carry significant risks.

The Bible says,
Psalm 139:13-14 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb…I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

When childhood ends on the operating table

The depths of this medical madness are plumbed further with the revelation that 18-year-olds, barely out of childhood, are being ushered onto the operating table to have their penises removed.

This “irreversible” surgery renders them permanently infertile, robbing them of the capacity to fulfil God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply.” The chilling data, obtained through Freedom of Information requests, confirms our worst fears: a significant proportion of these procedures are performed on those under 30, with some as young as 18 or 19.

How can a society, claiming to protect its youth, allow such a travesty? These are not mature adults making informed decisions; these are often vulnerable young people, caught in a societal maelstrom that promotes gender ideology over biological reality. This is child abuse, cloaked in medical legitimacy, and the NHS is its willing accomplice.

The long-term psychological impact on individuals who undergo these surgeries at a young age, particularly those who later “detransition”, often leading to profound regret, depression, and further mental health struggles. The stories of detransitioners, like Ritchie Herron, are a stark warning of the human cost.

The surgical deception – fabricating a fallacy

The details of these so-called “feminising genital surgeries” are gruesome and deeply disturbing. The removal of a man’s God-given anatomy – his p*nis and testicles – only to then fashion a crude imitation of a v*gina using the very skin of his desecrated body.

The NHS itself admits this surgery “is not reversible” and can lead to “permanent infertility,” “loss of sexual function,” incontinence, and “dissatisfaction” with the result. This is not genuine healing; it is a barbaric attempt to play God, creating a grotesque parody of His perfect design.

The sheer arrogance of man, believing he can improve upon divine creation, is laid bare in these operating theatres. This is a medical and moral abomination, inflicting lifelong suffering under the guise of “gender affirmation.”

There has been ethical debate surrounding medical interventions that cause permanent infertility, especially when performed on young individuals who may not fully comprehend the long-term consequences. This raises serious questions about informed consent and the medical profession’s responsibility to protect the future reproductive capacity of its patients.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The betrayal of trust – clinicians cry foul

Even within the medical establishment, voices of conscience are beginning to rise above the clamour of ideological conformity. Clinicians are calling for an urgent review, branding these procedures as “unethical” due to the alarming lack of evidence regarding their long-term impact.

Dr. Louise Irvine of the Clinical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender rightly points out the absence of research on the effectiveness of these surgeries in relieving gender dysphoria, juxtaposed with the high level of severe complications.

The NHS is proceeding with “profound surgery with long term effects on very young men,” many of whom, she notes, have underlying mental health issues or autism that are utterly neglected in these clinics. This is not compassionate care; it is a dereliction of medical duty, a scandalous abandonment of the principle of “first, do no harm.”

Meanwhile, a growing number of medical professionals and organisations have challenged the prevailing “affirmation-only” model of gender care, advocating for a more holistic, evidence-based, and cautious approach that prioritises mental health support over irreversible medical interventions.

Ask us to come and speak at your church →

Indoctrination to incision

Stephanie Davies-Arai, founder of Transgender Trend, offers a sobering truth: these young men are the tragic product of childhood indoctrination. They are the “same cohort of young people who have been indoctrinated as children into believing that they have a gender identity and that they are trans.”

They are then funnelled into adult clinics, subjected to “serious procedures” that are “elective surgeries with no health benefits but clear health risks and harm.”

Many of these young people are grappling with autism, mental health problems, or a history of trauma and abuse – issues that are conveniently ignored in the rush to irreversible surgery.

The NHS is spending millions on a destructive agenda, abandoning its true purpose for a dangerous ideological experiment.

Stop the mutilation, restore sanity

The NHS’s complacent response – a “wide-ranging review of adult gender services” that excludes surgery – is an insult to the intelligence and moral conscience of the nation.
It is a cynical attempt to deflect from the urgent need for a complete halt to these unproven and damaging procedures.

We, as Christians, must rise up and demand an immediate end to this taxpayer-funded barbarity. We must pray for those ensnared by this ideology and for those who have suffered at its hands. We must advocate for policies that uphold biological reality, protect the vulnerable, and restore genuine, ethical healthcare.

It is time for repentance, for a return to sanity, and for a complete rejection of the transgender agenda that is mutilating God’s precious creation.

Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

The forced adoption scandal

Forced adoption: Birth parents urged to give evidence to inquiry – BBC News

The BBC’s recent exposé on the UK’s forced adoption scandal has brought into the light one of the darkest and most disgraceful chapters in Britain’s post-war social history.

Between the 1940s and the 1970s, thousands of unmarried mothers – many of them young, vulnerable, and without support – were coerced into giving up their babies for adoption.

What should have been a time of love and protection became, for countless women, an experience marked by shame, abandonment, and state-sanctioned cruelty.

Support NCCSS / Christian Voice →

The scars of a “shameful” era

What has been uncovered is not simply administrative mishandling, but a cold and calculated campaign to sever the God-given bond between mother and child. Many of these women were held in so-called “mother and baby homes,” often run by religious institutions that, rather than offering refuge and compassion, enforced a harsh moral code that shamed young women into silence.

The accounts are heart-breaking: mothers denied even the chance to hold their newborns, or pressured to sign adoption papers while still in labour or heavily sedated. Families were told their children would be better off elsewhere – often with little regard for their welfare or identity. The emotional and psychological toll has been immense, lasting a lifetime for both mothers and the children taken from them.
Ask us to come and speak at your church →

State complicity, Church compromise

This scandal was not the doing of a few rogue institutions, but a nationwide system of collusion between the state and the Church. Government policies, local authorities, and religious agencies worked hand-in-glove to facilitate forced adoptions, often sealing birth records and severing all links between mother and child. It is now clear that public funds supported a framework that operated more like an ideological machine than a welfare service.

Christian Voice UK has always stood firm that the family – as ordained by God – is sacred and must never be overridden by the state or diluted by social trends. Tragically, this was a time when institutions bearing Christ’s name participated in unholy deeds.

It is not enough to say “we didn’t know.” Those who claimed to serve the vulnerable must answer for how so many were ignored, silenced, and destroyed under their watch.

Denial, delay and global contrast

Britain stands increasingly alone in its failure to acknowledge the truth. Countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have all issued formal apologies to the victims of forced adoption. Meanwhile, Westminster remains obstinately silent.

Despite a 2021 Joint Committee on Human Rights report that concluded the state bore clear responsibility, there has been no official apology from the UK government.

The example of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries or the story of Philomena Lee – whose child was taken and sold abroad – highlight that this is not merely a domestic issue, but a global wound shared by many Western nations. Yet the UK government’s continued refusal to speak the truth or offer repentance sets it apart for all the wrong reasons.

What message does it send to the women still living with these wounds? That their suffering is too inconvenient to address? That bureaucratic inertia is more important than moral restitution?

A hidden medical scandal

To compound this injustice, the BBC has revealed disturbing evidence that women in these homes were often administered drugs such as Diethylstilbestrol (DES) to suppress lactation. These synthetic hormones have since been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and generational harm. Worse still, many women were not even informed of what they were being given.

The notion that women’s bodies were so casually and callously treated – medicated, silenced, and sidelined – echoes the darkest practices of twentieth-century institutional abuse. The absence of adequate medical records only deepens the injustice, leaving many still unsure of the long-term health consequences they may yet face.

A growing movement for justice

Despite the state’s foot-dragging, courageous campaigners have continued to speak up. Groups like Mothers for Justice and the Movement for an Adoption Apology (MAA) have worked tirelessly to demand recognition, redress, and reform. Their stories – of stolen children, broken silence, and unhealed grief – are slowly but surely changing the narrative.

In 2024, the unveiling of the UK’s first public monument to victims of forced adoption in Cornwall was a historic moment. But this grassroots effort only underscores the silence at the national level. Why must grieving mothers erect their own memorials while the government offers none?

These campaigners are not asking for riches – they are asking for truth, healing, and dignity. Their cause is righteous, and the government’s delay is disgraceful.

Repentance is not optional

Scripture tells us that “ (). The time for bureaucratic hesitation is over. Britain must repent — not with vague regrets or muted reviews — but with a clear, public, and heartfelt apology.

The Bible says,
Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

Anything less is not injustice — it is rebellion against the truth of God’s design for the family. Forgiveness, healing, and restoration are only possible through repentance. That repentance must begin in Parliament, in the Church, and in the hearts of those who enabled this cruelty.

Let it not be said that our nation chose silence over sorrow, delay over dignity, or pride over repentance.

Home-schooling: Parental freedom at risk

0

The Children’s Well-being and Schools Bill is going through parliament.

The Bill is perhaps the most brazen assault yet on parental freedom in Britain.

Hidden beneath language of care and protection is a scheme of control.

The proposed universal register of children not in school and the state’s power to refuse a family’s request to home educate are clear markers of an institution no longer willing to trust its citizens.

Such measures presume that parents are guilty until proven innocent — that the default guardian of the child is not mother or father, but a local authority officer with a clipboard and a mandate.

This bill is a direct affront to the Christian understanding of the family. God gave children to parents, not governments. And while society may provide support structures, it must never overstep and seize the authority to dictate how that sacred stewardship is carried out.

Support Home Schooling →

Parental freedom at risk

The state’s creeping hand into the realm of home-schooling must be recognised for what it is: a moral affront to the God-ordained order of family and freedom.

The Bible says,
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The right to educate one’s child belongs not to the government, but to parents — as affirmed not only by Scripture but by long-standing British legal tradition.

Education should not the state’s tool to shape obedient citizens to its liking, it is a parental duty, and any legitimate schooling system must support that, not replace it.

Support NCCSS / Christian Voice →

EHCR Human Rights Protocol

The Universal Declaration of EHCR Human Rights Protocol 1, Article 2 is explicit: “No person shall be denied a right to an education. In the exercise of any functions which it assumes in relation to education and to teaching, the State shall respect the right of parents to ensure such education and teaching is in conformity with their own religious and philosophical convictions.”

Yet politicians increasingly treat that principle as optional. Today’s government insists it is simply ensuring “standards” and “safeguarding,” but what it is actually doing is building a bureaucratic apparatus to intrude, monitor, and dictate how children are raised.

Christian Voice has repeatedly warned of this shift. The slow erosion of parental authority in Britain is not accidental — it is the fruit of a worldview that places trust in the state rather than in God-given families. Once the state believes it owns the right to educate, it will not stop at “support.” It will legislate, coerce, and eventually penalise those who dissent.

Germany’s shadow: A cautionary tale for free nations

For anyone tempting to dismiss these concerns as overreaction, one need only look across the Channel. In Germany, homeschooling is not merely discouraged — it is outlawed. Christian families who refuse to subject their children to state ideology have seen their children forcibly removed and placed in care. This is not fiction; this is modern European policy, unfolding just a few hundred miles from Westminster.

Such control springs from a fundamental mistrust of parents and an arrogant belief in the state as the sole custodian of “proper” values. What Christian Voice sees in Germany is not progressive governance — it is statist paternalism of the most dangerous kind. If parents cannot choose how to raise and educate their children without threat of punishment, they are no longer free people. They are state-dependent subjects.

If Britain continues to follow this trajectory, we may soon see a similar regime here — one that polices educational choices, insists on ideological compliance, and punishes those who resist. This is not just about homeschooling. It is about whether families or bureaucrats have the final say over the hearts and minds of the next generation.

Indoctrination disguised as education

History offers grim warnings. In Mussolini’s Italy and Stalin’s Soviet Union, education was not about learning — it was about loyalty. Curricula were crafted to reinforce state dogma, and children were taught to revere the government above truth, conscience, or God. Dissenting parents were ignored, ridiculed, or punished. Schools became factories of political conformity.

The modern British classroom is not free from this danger. When “citizenship” classes are loaded with critical race theory, when biology lessons deny biological reality, and when early sex education pushes the boundaries of decency, we are no longer educating — we are indoctrinating. And when parents attempt to shield their children from this, they are met not with understanding, but hostility.

Christian parents pulling their children from such environments are not fringe outliers, they are faithful defenders of truth. It is not fear or ignorance that drives them, but wisdom and discernment. They see what the state refuses to admit: that its schools are no longer neutral.

Blaming parents for state failures

The government’s justification for this unprecedented intrusion is both flimsy and offensive. We are told that children must be monitored to prevent abuse, that homeschoolers are a blind spot in the system. But this is a lie. The most tragic recent cases of abuse — such as that of Sara Sharif — occurred in traditional schools, under the nose of trained teachers who failed to act.

The truth is this: the state’s own education system is broken. Nearly half of secondary school leavers are functionally illiterate. British employers report that school leavers are unprepared for work or life. Comprehensive schools are breeding grounds for confusion, despair, and in some cases, danger. And yet, instead of cleaning its own house, the state turns its eye on parents who have done the responsible thing and taken education into their own hands.

Christian Voice will not allow such scapegoating to go unchallenged. Homeschooling families are not the problem. They are the solution to a system that has lost both its moral compass and academic credibility.

Defending common law and Biblical order

The right to educate one’s own child is not a recent invention. It is rooted in English Common Law, grounded in Scripture, and codified in the Education Act of 1996, Section 7– states: “The parent of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him to receive efficient full-time education suitable—
(a)to his age, ability and aptitude, and

(b)to any special educational needs (in the case of a child who is in the area of a local authority in England) or additional learning needs (in the case of a child who is in the area of a local authority in Wales)] he may have,

either by regular attendance at school or otherwise”.

That Act did not grant the right to home educate — it recognised what was already there: that parents are the primary educators of their children, and the state is a supporting actor, not the lead.

Government’s attempt to upend this framework is a direct assault on both legal precedent and moral responsibility. It is a soft tyranny, disguised as care. Critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and sexual content cloaked in “inclusivity” are being embedded into lesson plans. And those who object are to be registered, reported, and restricted.

Christian Voice says enough. The battle for our children is a battle for the future. And in this battle, we will stand, speak, and defend the sacred role of parents as ordained by God Himself: to teach their children the way they should go, that when they are old, they will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

‘Gender construction kit’: NHS’s ideological shift

The NHS has been criticised for endorsing a ‘gender construction kit’ that offers ‘trans’ patients advice on how to use wigs and make-up to look like women.

This endorsement  on a page no longer available, exemplifies a significant shift from evidence-based medical practice to ideological advocacy.

This resource, lacking clear authorship and medical validation, encourages individuals to initiate gender transitions without medical consultation, raising concerns about the NHS promoting unverified and potentially harmful practices.

The kit’s advice, which includes tips on using nail varnish, eyelash extensions, perfume, and the correct underwear to transition to one’s desired gender, suggests that these changes can be made without medical oversight.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

The subversion of parental rights and safeguarding

One of the most disturbing elements of the so-called “gender construction kit” is its clear message that individuals – including children – “don’t need to see a doctor before you start.”

This casual dismissal of medical oversight actively encourages gender experimentation without professional input and, crucially, without parental knowledge or consent. It is a direct affront to both medical safeguarding and the role of parents as primary carers and protectors of their children.

Christian Voice has long raised concerns about schools and public institutions operating behind parents’ backs, quietly facilitating gender transitions in children without informing families. This trend has been increasingly exposed in schools across the UK, where children have been socially transitioned – given new names, pronouns, or access to opposite-sex facilities – all under the false guise of “support,” but in truth bypassing the very people responsible for their care and welfare.

By embracing a model of self-initiated “gender exploration” without clinical guidance, the NHS appears to have joined that same ideological crusade.

From Stonewall to the wards

The Gender Construction Kit is not an isolated incident; it is part of a deeply troubling pattern within the NHS and wider public services. As Christian Voice has previously reported, many NHS trusts have allowed external lobbying organisations, such as Stonewall, to shape their policies – often at the expense of scientific rigour, public trust, and Christian moral clarity.

Earlier this year, Health Secretary Wes Streeting had to intervene after it emerged that children’s gender markers were being changed on NHS records – sometimes without parental consent.

The Cass Review

The Cass Review exposed the frightening lack of evidence behind the so-called “affirmation model” used by NHS gender clinics, warning of long-term harm caused by rushing children into puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.

The NHS’s Tavistock clinic, once hailed as progressive, is now being shut down amid growing concerns of medical negligence and ideological bias.

Even NHS training programmes have come under criticism, including those that discouraged prayer and labelled traditional beliefs about gender as “harmful.” These are not minor bureaucratic missteps. They are signs of a national health service abandoning its founding principles and bowing to a worldview that deconstructs truth and biology alike. The gender construction kit may be one webpage – but it’s a window into an institution now in crisis.
Watch this

Who is behind this?

Gender Construction Kit
Gender Construction Kit

The anonymity surrounding the creators of the so-called “gender construction kit” — flippantly credited to “UK queers by UK queers” — is a glaring red flag. In any other area of medicine, anonymous authorship would be utterly unacceptable. Yet here, it is not only tolerated but disseminated through NHS channels, raising serious questions about oversight, credibility, and responsibility.

That the taxpayer-funded health service is promoting material devoid of clinical authorship or peer review marks a dangerous departure from its duty to uphold rigorous medical standards. Instead, it leans on faceless activists to offer life-altering advice — some of it with irreversible consequences — to confused and vulnerable individuals. This isn’t healthcare; it is ideological freelancing masquerading as support.

Christian Voice has long warned about the unchecked power of NHS quangos and their ideological drift. This episode only confirms that concern. When advice that affects minds, bodies, and futures is allowed to spread without named accountability, the door is left wide open for radical agendas to flourish in the dark — free from scrutiny, free from challenge, and free from the moral framework Britain’s institutions were once built upon.

Return to the UK’s Christian Constitution →

The lawless quangocracy

The roll-out of the so-called “gender construction kit” across multiple NHS trusts, including Leeds and York, Sussex, Devon, and Cumbria Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, exposes not just a misguided resource but a deep-rooted ideological capture within the NHS itself.

That such a document, unauthoured and unaccredited, has been embraced by multiple health bodies suggests we are no longer dealing with isolated policy lapses, but with a systemic failure of governance and accountability within the NHS quangocracy.

This is not the action of a centralised, medically accountable institution. It is the conduct of decentralised public bodies pushing controversial material with no apparent oversight — a law unto themselves. Christian Voice has long sounded the alarm over the rise of public sector quangos that operate with minimal democratic scrutiny while promoting agendas fundamentally at odds with biblical morality and societal order. Here, that warning is tragically vindicated.

This is not healthcare reform. It is cultural subversion, smuggled in under the veil of “inclusivity” and left unchecked by any meaningful authority.

Assisted Suicide Bill: Parliament Poised to Play God

Assisted dying: UdeMNouvelles

Today, Parliament has voted to allow health staff to opt out of assisted dying process. The Assisted Dying Bill, is a proposal that, if passed, would allow terminally ill patients to legally request lethal medication.

The legislation passed its first stage in the House of Commons last November – but since then the details have been pored over and dozens of amendments added by both sides.

It is being sold as a compassionate, dignified end. But beneath the surface lies something much darker: the legalisation of suicide under state approval, funded by a national health service created to preserve life.

This Bill is not merely a policy proposal, it is a moral revolution. For the first time, the UK would allow its doctors to stop treating and start k*lling. The very institution founded to protect life from cradle to grave would become an agent of intentional death.

The Bible says,
Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.
Once we cross that line, where does it end? Legal permission today becomes moral expectation tomorrow. It is an assault on the image of God in man.

The debate

Friday’s parliamentary discussions saw MPs contemplate further amendments, notably one that would restrict medical professionals from initiating conversations about assisted dying with patients. However, the abrupt adjournment before any votes could be cast raises concerns about the thoroughness of this legislative process. The subsequent scheduling of further debate and a pivotal vote on the bill’s progression to its next stage in June suggests a piecemeal approach to a matter of profound ethical significance. Furthermore, the government’s declared neutrality and the granting of a free vote to MPs, while “ostensibly respecting individual conscience”, could also be interpreted as an abdication of leadership on an issue demanding clear and principled guidance. The original provision within the bill, absolving medical practitioners from any obligation to participate and safeguarding them from discrimination based on their conscientious objection, appears as a foundational but perhaps insufficient attempt to navigate the complex ethical landscape surrounding state-sanctioned death.

A health service turned inside out

The NHS was created to heal, to alleviate suffering, not eliminate the sufferer. By endorsing physician-assisted suicide, the state rewrites the DNA of our healthcare system. As the Spectator rightly argues, the Bill turns the health service into its opposite: not a defender of life, but a gateway to death.

Can the same doctor tasked with delivering babies also be expected to issue lethal doses? Can the same system that rightly fights to prevent suicide in one patient be encouraged to assist it in another?

James 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Ask us to come and speak at your church →

The slippery slope is real

Proponents of assisted dying insist on “strict safeguards”, a terminal diagnosis, sound mind, voluntary request. But international evidence shows these safeguards always loosen.

In Canada, assisted death now accounts for over 4% of all deaths — and includes those with mental illness. In Belgium and the Netherlands, it’s extended to children.

The logic is cruelly consistent: if death is a solution to suffering, why limit it to terminal illness? Why not to chronic pain, loneliness, or despair? Once we legitimise death as medicine, suffering becomes a burden too easily solved by silence.

The door Parliament opens tomorrow will not close — it will swing wider with every passing year.
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Return to the UK’s Christian Constitution →

Suicide for some, prevention for others

One of the gravest contradictions in this Bill is its handling of suicide itself. We invest millions in suicide prevention campaigns, charities, and hotlines.

We tell young people their life has value, that help is available, and that darkness does not last forever. And yet, in the same breath, we will now say: “But for you, death is acceptable. We’ll help you with it.”

This is hypocrisy of the highest order. It undermines the entire foundation of mental health care and casts vulnerable people adrift.

John 10:10 says; The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life.

Life is not ours to give and take as we please. It is sacred. It is God’s gift — and God’s to end.

The quiet pressure to di*

Advocates speak of choice, but in practice, this bill will pressure the elderly, the sick, and the disabled to see themselves as burdens. What begins as a “right to die” can quickly feel like a duty to die. When budgets are stretched, families are tired, and pain is complex, assisted suicide becomes the convenient option.

Who will reassure the lonely widow that her life still matters when the system quietly offers her an exit? Who will defend the dignity of those whose very existence will now be seen as negotiable?

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

The Christian view does not deny suffering,  it walks with it. Our calling is not to terminate the suffering person, but to love and serve them as Christ served us.

A line we cannot cross

As Christians, we cannot support a law that contradicts both Scripture and conscience. The Assisted Dying Bill violates the sixth commandment, undermines the NHS, confuses the message on suicide, and weakens protections for the vulnerable. It is unbiblical, unethical, and ultimately unkind.

The road to death should never be made smooth by the state. True compassion is found not in euthanasia but in palliative care, prayer, and presence. The gospel offers hope in life and in death — but never death as hope.

Deuteronomy 30:19 Set before you this day life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.

As the debate unfolds, may Christian voices speak with clarity and courage: this is a line our nation must not cross.

Virgin Island’ misguided quest for intimacy

First Look at Channel 4's Virgin Island | Channel 4

First Look at Channel 4's Virgin Island | Channel 4
First Look at Channel 4’s Virgin Island | Channel 4

Channel 4’s Virgin Island reality show is marketed as a “s*x and intimacy retreat” for adult virgins to overcome their supposed social anxiety and sexual inexperience.

The series follows 12 adults who have never had s*x before, who travel to a retreat in Croatia to complete a range of tasks in the hope of losing their virginity.

But beneath its glossy exterior lies a deeply troubling agenda—normalising fornication, sexual experimentation, and the rejection of biblical values, all under the guise of therapy.

The programme features sexologists, surrogate partners, and sexually explicit scenes, pushing participants toward physical intimacy without any regard for the sanctity of sex as defined by God. It treats virginity not as a virtue, but as a disorder to be treated with physical practice.

Rather than encouraging modesty, restraint, and godly purpose in relationships, Virgin Island glorifies self-gratification. It repackages moral compromise as healing, leading many into error.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

A nation desensitised

Despite some backlash on social media, Channel 4 proceeded with airing Virgin Island in a 9 p.m. slot, fully aware of its explicit nature. Scenes involving physical demonstrations between contestants and sexologists left viewers who prefer to stay anonymous visibly uncomfortable and disturbed.

While society has pushed the envelope on sexual content for years, even secular viewers recognised that the programme crossed a line. But shock alone is not enough—we must discern and speak truth.

As Christians, we must resist not only immorality but also the media forces that seek to dull our spiritual senses.

A culture feeding on vulnerability

Virgin Island claimed to help individuals with self-worth and confidence, yet what it offered was public exposure and private degradation. Surrogate sexual activity was broadcast for entertainment, not healing.

This is not compassion. It is the commodification of brokenness. Rather than guiding people to true identity in Christ, the show strips participants of dignity and modesty, selling their vulnerability for ratings.

2 Timothy 3:1–3This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves… without natural affection… despisers of those that are good.

Where is the accountability? When human dignity is traded for clicks and conversations, it becomes clear we are witnessing a society that loves pleasure more than it loves righteousness.

Ask us to come and speak at your church →

Virginity shamed, lust glorified

The core premise of Virgin Island is that virginity is abnormal. But Scripture teaches the opposite. Virginity, when preserved in honour before marriage, is a testimony to obedience and self-control.

The world calls this backward. God calls it holy.

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

Channel 4 has used this programme to flip good and evil on their heads. It mocks those who choose to wait, and exalts those who reject restraint. It offers no place for godly conviction—only indulgence disguised as self-expression.

Clarion Call to Christians: Stand for Truth

In the face of Virgin Island and similar programming, Christians cannot afford to remain silent. We must stand firmly, not just against explicit content, but against the worldview that makes it possible—one that detaches sex from covenant and confuses freedom with sin.

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Let Virgin Island serve not only as a warning, but as a wake-up call. We must raise our voices, guard our children, and uphold the biblical standard of purity in a world determined to tear it down.

‘Protect the Dolls’: Misleading appeal

London Fashion Week may have showcased glamorous looks, but what took centre stage was not couture—it was a political statement. Designer Conner Ives took a bow in a T-shirt reading “Protect the Dolls,” a euphemism for “trans-identified” males, positioning them as vulnerable and oppressed. Yet for many, this is not fashion, it is indoctrination.

Two months later, the T-shirt has become a runaway hit. Celebrities like Troye Sivan and Pedro Pascal have helped glamorise the slogan, even in the wake of a landmark ruling affirming that legal references to women mean biological women. Instead of respecting that legal clarity, this shirt defiantly muddies the water.

By aligning himself with a slogan that subverts truth, Ives casts fashion as a weapon in the culture war. The aim? Normalising gender ideology and trivialising the reality of biological sex under the guise of solidarity.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

A £75 Lie: How the culture war is being monetised

Retailing at £75 and with nearly 5,000 orders, the “Protect the Dolls” shirt isn’t just a statement—it’s a cash machine. According to Ives, the shirt has raised £380,000 for Trans Lifeline, a group promoting trans ideology under the banner of mental health support.

It is worth asking: when did charitable giving turn into moral coercion? Christian charities, pro-life groups, and faith-based shelters struggle for funds, yet a slogan steeped in ideology raises hundreds of thousands in a month. The market isn’t rewarding compassion—it’s rewarding conformity.

This is not grassroots activism. It’s a well-oiled machine turning political slogans into currency. And for Christians, it’s a reminder of what happens when the marketplace embraces lies over truth.

Subverting the call to protection

“Protect the Dolls” pretends to speak up for the vulnerable. But unlike the biblical call to defend the widow, the orphan, and the poor, this call promotes confusion over creation. It’s a perversion of Christian compassion.

The slogan elevates self-identification above biological reality, as if subjective feelings should replace objective truth. It encourages society to “protect” those who deny their God-given sex—an inversion of the biblical order of male and female.

Christian love protects through truth, not affirmation of lies. This slogan presents a counterfeit gospel—one where feelings are sacred, and facts are oppression.

Ask us to come and speak at your church →

Red carpet rebels

The red carpet is no stranger to virtue-signalling, but this time it has become a pulpit for woke theology. When Troye Sivan performed at Coachella in the shirt, and Pedro Pascal wore it to a movie premiere, they weren’t just being trendy—they were preaching ideology.

Their message is clear: biological truth is bigotry, and “allyship” means promoting falsehood. This is not about kindness or inclusion. It’s about reshaping the cultural narrative to erase God’s design for gender.

These men are being hailed as “real allies,” but to whom? Not to truth. Not to women. And certainly not to the children being fed confusion in the name of acceptance.

Return to the UK’s Christian Constitution →

Clothing as indoctrination

T-shirts have long been tools of expression—but what happens when expression turns into indoctrination? Ives’s slogan is being worn not just at fashion shows but at protests, on public transport, and across social media. This isn’t fashion. It’s a billboard for gender ideology.

We are being told that a simple T-shirt is a political revolution. But Christians must ask: why is there such hunger to broadcast this lie everywhere, from tube stations to red carpets? Because if a lie is repeated often enough, people begin to believe it.

Unlike gospel messages, which invite reflection, these shirts demand conformity. Disagree, and you’re labelled a bigot. This isn’t free speech. It’s coerced allegiance.

Marketing mythology

Activists claim the T-shirt’s power lies in its simplicity. But it’s that very simplicity that makes it dangerous. “Protect the Dolls” doesn’t explain who the dolls are, what they believe, or why they need protection. It leaves room for manipulation and moral coercion.

Charlie Craggs and others argue that messages like these “get read” because they’re stark. But slogans without substance are the perfect vehicles for half-truths. They offer no nuance, no context—just emotional pressure.

The Christian must see through this. Not all simple messages are true. Jesus wept. God is love. Christ is risen. These are simple—and they’re true. “Protect the Dolls”? That’s simple—and it’s false.

Christians must not be silent

Ives claims the slogan gave the trans movement “a message.” But Christians already have a message: truth. Hope. Redemption. The question is whether we are bold enough to speak it when the world shouts lies in capital letters across £75 shirts.

The designer may feel pride in the attention and funds raised, but this isn’t progress—it’s regression. It redefines truth by committee and compassion by delusion. And it demands that Christians bow to the golden calf of inclusivity.

In the face of such cultural pressure, we must not go silent. The gospel is counter-cultural, and now more than ever, we are called to speak—not just in church—but in fashion, in politics, and in the public square.

Nicola Sturgeon:The audacity of timing

Nicola Sturgeon: 'a rat swimming to join a sinking ship'
Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon pontificates about the issue with Holyrood
Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon pontificates about the issue with Holyrood

Nicola Sturgeon’s choice to make her first significant intervention on the UK Supreme Court ruling regarding “trans rights” on the very day her successor was delivering the Holyrood equivalent of the King’s Speech can be viewed as nothing short of a deliberate distraction.

The timing, far from coincidental, suggests a calculated move to seize the spotlight and potentially undermine the new administration’s crucial address to Parliament. It raises serious questions about the motivations behind such a conspicuous act, hinting at a reluctance to cede the political stage entirely.

This was not some spontaneous outpouring of concern, it was a deliberate act of stage management. The timing, so exquisitely poor for the current First Minister, speaks volumes about the priorities at play. Was this truly about the nuanced complexities of “trans rights”, or more about ensuring that Ms. Sturgeon’s voice remained the loudest in the room?

The Bible says in Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

Stop Transgenderism Now!

Dismissing the judgement, dodging the detail

Ms. Sturgeon’s carefully worded assertion that she isn’t “challenging” the Supreme Court’s ruling on biological sex rings rather hollow. While paying lip service to the legal reality, her subsequent condemnation of the implications and the EHRC guidance clearly indicates a profound disagreement with its conclusions. Itis a classic political manoeuvre – appear to respect the law while vehemently undermining its practical application.

Her claim that the EHRC’s interim guidance, aimed at safeguarding single-sex spaces, will render “trans” lives “unliveable” is a sweeping statement devoid of specific justification. Where is the detailed explanation of this assertion? What tangible evidence supports such a dramatic claim?

Where is the rigorous analysis of how these guidelines would concretely impact the daily lives of transgender individuals? To simply declare something “unliveable” without substantiating the claim feels intellectually lazy and designed to shut down further scrutiny.

Proverbs 18:17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.

Support NCCSS / Christian Voice →

The uncomfortable questions avoided

The glaring omissions in the former Scottish first minister’s intervention are perhaps more telling than her direct statements. The case of Isla Bryson, a “trans-identified” male rapist housed in a male prison, raises profoundly uncomfortable questions about the practicalities of self-identification and the safety of women. Sturgeon’s silence on this and similar cases is deafening.

Similarly, the debate surrounding the inclusion of biological males in women’s sports is not about causing “life-threatening distress,” but about ensuring fair competition and protecting the integrity of female categories. To conflate these distinct issues is disingenuous.

And the case of Beth Upton, a male-bodied trans woman allowed in hospital changing rooms, and the subsequent suspension of Nurse Peggie for raising concerns, demands a clear explanation that Sturgeon conveniently sidesteps.

These are not abstract hypotheticals; they are real-world examples with tangible consequences for individuals. Ms. Sturgeon’s refusal to address these specific scenarios suggests a reluctance to confront the inherent tensions within her ideological position.

Ask us to come and speak at your church →

The suspended nurse and the wellbeing ignored

The case of Sandie Peggie, a nurse suspended for the better part of a year for raising legitimate concerns about sharing a women’s changing room with a male-bodied individual, is frankly scandalous. Her decades of service seemingly counted for nothing when weighed against the prevailing ideological orthodoxy. The Fife Health Board’s continued inaction following the Supreme Court ruling is an indictment of their priorities.

Where is the concern for Ms. Peggie’s mental wellbeing throughout this ordeal? Her experience highlights the very real anxieties of women in single-sex spaces when boundaries are blurred. Sturgeon’s silence on this specific injustice speaks volumes about whose well-being she prioritises.

It appears the concerns of women who feel their spaces are being eroded are deemed less significant than the ideological imperative of self-identification.

The dogma of “transwomen are women”

Sturgeon’s strong belief in the “quasi-religious dogma” that “transwomen are women” appears to override any consideration of biological reality or the potential consequences for women’s safety and privacy. This ideological stance, while sincerely held by some, fails to acknowledge the material differences between biological males and females.

The push for the ill-fated Gender Recognition Reform Bill, with its self-identification policy, was a testament to this unyielding belief. To suggest that a simple declaration could erase biological sex and grant unrestricted access to women’s spaces was a policy fraught with potential risks, as the Supreme Court rightly recognised. This wasn’t about equality; it was about the erasure of established boundaries.

1 Corinthians 14:33 states, For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

The potential for disorder and the erosion of established safeguards were significant concerns raised by many, concerns seemingly dismissed by this ideological commitment.

The refusal to apologise and labour’s complicity

Sturgeon’s refusal to apologise for the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, despite its widespread opposition and ultimate veto, demonstrates a remarkable lack of accountability.

To simply point to the initial parliamentary majority as justification ignores the significant concerns raised by legal experts, women’s groups, and a substantial portion of the public.

The fact that the Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, initially whipped his MSPs to support this flawed legislation is a matter of considerable embarrassment for his party. His subsequent admission that it was a “mistake” highlights the political expediency that often trumps principled decision-making. Sturgeon’s continued defence of the indefensible suggests an unwillingness to learn from past errors.

Acknowledging the flaws in the legislation would have been a more honest and constructive approach.

Ignoring the will of the people and the logic of biology

The Supreme Court’s ruling, grounded in the irrefutable reality of biological sex, reflects the views of the vast majority of the electorate.

The judges were not expressing animus towards transgender individuals; they were upholding the fundamental principle that biological distinctions matter, particularly when it comes to law and the safeguarding of specific groups.

To attempt to erase “human biology in law” was always a radical and ultimately unsustainable proposition. Attempting to protect people who decide to get mutilated from getting called out, it cannot come at the expense of ignoring biological realities and the legitimate concerns of women regarding their safety and privacy in single-sex spaces.

Psalm 139:14 beautifully says: I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

A self-serving spectacle concluded

Ultimately, Nicola Sturgeon’s intervention appears less about a genuine concern for the nuanced complexities of “trans rights” and more about a desire to remain a central figure in Scottish political discourse. The timing, the selective engagement with the issues, and the refusal to address uncomfortable realities all point to a carefully orchestrated act of self-promotion.

While the debate surrounding transgender rights is undeniably important and requires thoughtful consideration, this particular intervention feels more like a former leader unwilling to fade into the background. The focus on grand pronouncements rather than detailed solutions does little to advance a constructive dialogue.

One is left with the distinct impression that the primary audience for this intervention was not the “trans community” or the Scottish public, but rather the individual who delivered it.
