Lords’ Decision Imminent in Jerry Springer Case

The House of Lords is poised to decide whether to hear an appeal in the Jerry Springer the Opera case, Christian Voice has learned.

The case is going to the Appeal Committee of the House of Lords this week, and a decision whether or not to hear the case is expected to be made shortly.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, is seeking to bring a prosecution for blasphemy against Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, in respect of the BBC2 broadcast of the show on 8th January 2005, and the show’s producer Jonathan Thoday.

In December, two High Court judges ruled that theatres and broadcasters were exempt from the law against blasphemy. a decision described by the authoritative law journal Criminal Law Week as ‘devoid of any legal merit’. Mr Justice Collins and Lord Justice Hughes refused to allow the prosecution to go ahead.

However, Stephen Green’s application to appeal against the High Court decision was lodged by his legal team with the House of Lords on 3rd January this year.

The appeal to the House of Lords has induced a state of panic amongst secularists campaigning against the Christian constitution of the United Kingdom . Terrified that Green might win in the House of Lords, Dr Evan Harris moved an amendment to abolish the blasphemy laws later that month during the passage of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill. He withdrew his amendment after a promise by the Government to move their own.

Amendments to abolish the blasphemy laws have now been put down for the Committee Stage of the Bill in the House of Lords, one by Lord Avebury and the other by the Earl of Onslow and Baroness Stern. A Government amendment has not yet tabled, and Stephen Green’s solicitors, Criminal Law Advocates of Reading, have written to the Government to make them aware of the latest development in the appeal to the House of Lords.

Stephen Green said today:

‘I can see why the secularists, who love insulting Jesus Christ, want to get on and abolish the blasphemy laws. They complain they haven’t been used for thirty years, which is not strictly correct, but now that a case is about to be brought, they are running scared.

‘But it would be completely unreasonable, not to say churlish, of the House of Lords to abolish the blasphemy laws just while a case revolving around them is being considered by the House of Lords itself.’

Note to Editors: Wingrove’s film Visions of Ecstasy was banned by the BBFC because of the blasphemy laws and that decision was upheld by the European Court of Human Rights, as were the convictions of Gay News and its editor Denis Lemon in the Gay News case in 1982.

The blasphemy laws prevent “any contemptuous, reviling, scurrilous or ludicrous matter relating to God, Jesus Christ, or the Bible.”

Jerry Springer the Opera featured Jesus Christ as an infantile coprophiliac, who was told by Jerry Springer in the show to ‘Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.’

Top Jewish Lawyer Supports Christian Voice Over Statue

A top Jewish lawyer has supported a call from Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, for Terence Koh’s pornographic statue of Jesus Christ, which Christians have described as blasphemous, to be destroyed by its owners, a prominent Jewish couple.

Leading criminal law barrister Jonathan Goldberg QC made his plea in a letter to the Jewish Chronicle, which was published today.

The statue, part of a collection owned by Anita Zabludowicz, was on display at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead .  The exhibition closed on Saturday 20th January and Mrs Zabludowicz now has her statue back.

Her husband, Finnish billionaire Poju Zabludowicz, sits on the Jewish Leadership Council with the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, the President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Mr Henry Grunwald, QC, and a host of the Jewish great and good.

‘It is unpardonable to show such disrespect and cause such gratuitous offence to our Christian friends and supporters of Israel , above all in these troubled times,’ wrote Mr Goldberg.

‘Mr and Mrs Poju Zabludowicz should now demonstrate the qualities of Jewish communal leadership to which they aspire, no doubt worthily, by consigning this artefact to the depths,’ he concluded.
Stephen Green said:

‘Those of us who honour the Jewish roots of our Christian faith and the place of Israel in God’s purpose will be dismayed to see such disrespect of our faith from such prominent members of the Jewish community, whom we regard as the cultivated Olive Tree, from Romans 11:13-24.

‘Back in 2005, the Chief Rabbi lectured on “How to build a culture of respect”. He spoke of the Christian and Jewish communities feeling “on the defensive” and “bruised” in the face of onslaughts from secularists and Islamists.  In February 2006, he asked on the BBC: “Can we learn to respect what others hold holy?”

‘If these are to be more than just words, such a disrespectful piece of plaster, insulting the One whom Christians hold most holy of all, can find no place amongst the possessions of a prominent Jewish couple who know the Chief Rabbi personally.

‘The thought of Mr & Mrs Zabludowicz owning or profiting from a statue humiliating and blaspheming the Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua Meshiach, brings up thoughts that I really do not want to entertain.  That is why I am very grateful to Jonathan Goldberg QC for his gracious support.  Whatever that disgraceful statue is worth, good relations between Christian and Jews are worth far, far more.’

Disestablishment Motion Has Mark of the Beast!

No, you couldn’t make this one up.  Seriously.  While the blasphemy debate was on in the House of Commons last night, and just as we were thinking that once the blasphemy law is abolished they would be calling for disestablishment of the Church of England as the next step along the road to an anti-Christian Britain, well, three MP’s were putting down an Early Day Motion (it has no chance of being debated, it’s just flying a kite) calling, er, for the Church of England to be disestablished.

Dozens of these motions get put down in a day on all sorts of issues.  The clerks just allocated it the next number in the list.  In a masterly twist, that number was 666, symbol of the Antichrist. Click here to see the motion on the Parliament website.

“This number is supposed to be the mark of the Devil. It looks as though God or the Devil have been moving in mysterious ways,” said Bob Russell, a LibDem MP among those proposing the motion.  “What is even stranger is that this motion was tabled last night when MPs were debating blasphemy,” he added.

The motion says “That this House calls for the disestablishment of the Church of England” which would mean an end to the formal link between Church and State in England — embodied in the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who is both head of state and head of the Church of England and the presence of bishops sitting in the House of Lords.

The number 666 is referred to in the Book of Revelation: “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred, three score and six.” (Rev 13:18)

“It is incredible that a motion like this should have, by chance, acquired this significant number,” said Russell.

By chance?  Hmm.  The Lord Almighty is trying to tell those stupid, proud, arrogant, fallible Members of Parliament something about the holiness of His name, or about His sovereignty over this United Kingdom, or about His ability to intervene in the affairs of men.  But will they listen?

High Court Springer Verdict ‘Will be Appealed’

A High Court verdict to refuse a private prosecution for blasphemy in the case of Jerry Springer the Opera will be appealed, it was announced today.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, is seeking to prosecute Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, and Jonathan Thoday of producers Avalon, following a theatre tour of the show from January to July 2006 and its transmission on BBC2 in January 2005.

In January this year, Stephen Green asked Horseferry Road Magistrates Court to issue a summons for a private prosecution against Messrs Thompson and Thoday but District Judge Caroline Tubbs refused the application. The High Court action was to seek judicial review of the District Judge’s decision.

But Lord Justice Hughes and Mr Justice Collins refused to overturn the District Judge’s decision, saying the Theatres Act 1968 and the Broadcasting Act 1990 allow blasphemy to be performed and transmitted. They also said that Jerry Springer the Opera was not blasphemous, but was an attack not on Christianity but on television chat-shows. In that, they disagreed with Mr Justice Underhill ‘s preliminary view, which was to grant leave for judicial review in the first place.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘We must appeal this disappointing decision. The law as the Court has interpreted it now gives carte blanche to broadcasters and theatre companies to blaspheme, while the press still may not. That cannot be logical, let alone right. In effect the guts of the law against blasphemy have been torn out, and not even by Parliament, but by judicial decree. I believe the judges have wrongly interpreted

‘I have heard the line that Jerry Springer the Opera was a satire on intrusive and exploitative TV before. The BBC are repeating it in a somewhat self-serving press release this morning. In Act 1 of the show that argument might just be made. But in Act 2 we had the character of Jesus Christ in what appeared to be a nappy, identified as a coprophiliac pervert, saying He was a “little bit gay”. We had Mary His mother described as being “raped by an angel” and Jesus asked ‘Where were you when the condom split?” The character of Jesus swore and hit people, the sacrament of Holy Communion was ridiculed and so were Christ’s wounds on the Cross. Almighty God was presented as ineffectual and needing a shoulder to cry on. Finally, Jesus was told by Jerry Springer to “Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.” Are we seriously being asked that all of that is an attack on TV and not an attack on Christianity, when the show’s author, militant atheist Stewart Lee himself, described it as a ‘blasphemy musical’ in an article in the Sunday Herald on 10th October 2004.

‘So we have one High Court judge say there was an arguable case in our favour, and now two have gone the other way. I hope and pray the House of Lords will uphold the totality of the law against blasphemy and allow the prosecution to proceed. If they do not, then a bit more common decency, courtesy and respect, which is part of what it means to be civilised, let alone British, will have been thrown away.’

READ: Exod 20:7; Psalm 2:1-12; Prov 3:1-6; Isa 52:5; Luke 18:1-8; John 3:18-20, 7:24; Phil 2:5-11; Col 3:8.

PRAY: For our appeal to the House of Lords.  Pray for wisdom in framing the appeal and for a favourable decision.  Pray that our Lord’s Holy name will be upheld in this United Kingdom .  From the Lord’s prayer: ‘Hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’

Conservatives Promise Diwali Bank-Holiday

David Cameron’s Conservatives, as they styled themselves in the Ealing Southall by-election, have made bank holidays for non-Christian religious festivals part of their policy platform, Christian Voice has learned.

The promise, to give Asian religious holidays the same status as Christmas, was broadcast over loudhailers from cars working the West London constituency on election day last week.

The desperate attempt to win votes was only broadcast in Asian vernacular languages, but it backfired as voters pushed Cameron’s hand-picked candidate into third place.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today: ‘This just illustrates David Cameron at his opportunistic, dishonest and patronising worst. Firstly, in this majority-Asian constituency, he suddenly thought there was political money in promising to elevate Eid, Diwali and Guru Nanak’s birthday to the same status as Christmas. Secondly, he attempted to cover his tracks by only putting the policy out in Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi. Thirdly, he reckoned that Asian voters were so stupid that this sop would make his party seem electable to them.

‘In reality, apart from those Muslims who long for Britain to be an Islamic state, most Asian voters want to see Britain assert its Christian heritage. They feel betrayed by secularism and they don’t want to be part of an aimless, multi-religious swamp.  They also respect people who have principles and stick to them. This bizarre policy initiative just confirms that under David Cameron there is nothing of our heritage the Conservatives value enough to want to conserve.

‘Coming so soon after the marriage tax-break debacle, when financial incentives for marriage were proposed by Iain Duncan-Smith’s think tank only for Cameron to say they would also be offered to homosexual couples, it is no wonder that the fiercely family-minded Asian communities were less than impressed by “David Cameron’s Conservatives”.’

Rev George Hargreaves, leader of the Christian Party, whose candidate in Southall nearly beat UKIP, said: ‘To elevate Eid or Diwali to the same status as Christmas would not only undermine Christianity in Britain ; it would totally destroy British culture. To not even use English to convey this policy is nothing less than treacherous.’

Labour Figures’ Bizarre Link to Paedophile Groups

Their involvement with an organisation to which two groups campaigning for the legalisation of paedophilia were affiliated has come back to challenge three leading Labour Party figures.

Before she became an MP, Harriet Harman was the legal officer in the late 1970s for the National Council for Civil Liberties. When Miss Harman joined NCCL in 1978, PIE, the Paedophile Information Exchange, had already been affiliated for three years. Another group, Paedophile Action for Liberation, a Gay Liberation Front offshoot, had also been affiliated to NCCL until it was absorbed by PIE. PIE, which campaigned for adults to have sex legally with children, only broke off its relationship with NCCL when it went undercover in 1982, the same year that Harriet Harman left her NCCL post to become Member of Parliament for Peckham.

NCCL people were earlier involved in keeping the name of an NCCL council-member, Jonathan Walters, out of the People newspaper when it ran an exposé of Paedophile Action for Liberation, of which he was secretary, in 1975. The People still ran the story, but Walters was not named.

Even more extraordinary is the fact that a current Cabinet Minister was running the National Council of Civil Liberties at the time all this was going on.

The Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Health, became General Secretary of NCCL in 1974. The very next year, 1975, NCCL invited the Paedophile Information Exchange and Paedophile Action for Liberation to affiliate. In the year after, 1976, the now-notorious paedophile Tom O’Carroll was invited to address the NCCL conference, which promptly voted to ‘deplore’ the use of chemical castration treatments for paedophiles.

Also in 1975, Patricia Hewitt joined the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, as a ‘straight’, in the same year that Keith Hose of the Paedophile Information Exchange addressed its second annual conference. Hose moved a motion of censure on the conference organising committee for ‘relegating paedophilia to ancillary status in conference.’ The motion was seconded by Trevor Locke, who just happened to be a member of the Executive Council of the NCCL. ‘An awareness and acceptance of the sexuality of children is an essential part of the liberation of the young homosexual,’ the motion went on. It was duly passed.

Jack Dromey, whom Harriet Harman married in 1982, and who is now Treasurer of the Labour Party, was also involved with the NCCL. He served on its Executive Committee from 1970 to 1979, so he was there when the decision to invite the two paedophile groups to affiliate was made. NCCL also set up a gay rights sub-committee at the same time, members of which included prominent paedophiles Peter Bremner (alias Roger Nash), Michael Burbidge, Keith Hose and Tom O’Carroll. And of course Walters and Locke were on the Executive.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, commented:

‘It is timely that the ghosts of the 1970’s past should come back to haunt these three leading Labour Party politicians. Harriet Harman, Jack Dromey and Patricia Hewitt were in their mid- or late-twenties at the time, but that cannot really excuse the way NCCL came to regard paedophiles as an oppressed minority whose civil liberties needed to be fought for.

‘All three of them really need to explain why they were so friendly toward so many out campaigning homosexual paedophiles in their youth. Why did they allow the NCCL gay rights sub-committee to be stuffed with them? Why were they happy to work with paedophilia supporters on the NCCL Executive? It cannot have been sympathy with child-molestation, so was it a complete lack of judgment or was it moral cowardice?

‘NCCL has now been rebranded as ‘Liberty’ and is doing great work standing up to the Government to defend the civil liberties of us all. But thirty years ago some rather peculiar things went on, and I think we should be told why.’

High Court Allows ‘Springer’ Challenge

The High Court has allowed a legal challenge to a magistrate’s decision not to issue a private prosecution for blasphemy over Jerry Springer the Opera.

Mr Justice Underhill has granted a judicial review of the ruling of District Judge Caroline Tubbs not to issue a summons on the application of Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice.

Stephen Green laid information in January this year against both the Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson, who allowed Jerry Springer the Opera to be screened on BBC2, and the show’s producer, Jonathan Thoday, who staged it at the Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End and then in a nation-wide tour last year. But sitting at Horseferry Road Magistrates’ Court, the District Judge refused to allow the summons to be issued.

Lawyers for both Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday submitted papers to the High Court as interested parties. Those papers were read by Mr Justice Underhill together with the application for judicial review from Stephen Green and the ruling of District Judge Tubbs.

The judgment means the case will go straight to an oral hearing. It is the most positive of three possible outcomes. His Lordship found on his viewing of the papers that it could be argued that the magistrate was wrong on both reasons she gave for refusing to issue the summons. His ruling says:

‘The District Judge appears to have refused to issue the summons on 2 alternative grounds 1 that a prosecution was precluded by s 2 4 of the Theatres Act and 2 that the facts alleged by the claimant did not disclose that the essential ingredients of the offence were prima facie present.

‘As to 1 I consider that the District Judge was wrong to take the view that s 2 4 applied to the offence of blasphemy. With respect to the submissions of the first interested party the question is one of law not of judicial discretion.’

On 2, the ruling says: ‘… given the definitions of the scope of the law of blasphemy endorsed in Whitehouse, I do consider it arguable that the DJ’s assessment that the facts alleged disclose in effect no case fit to go to the jury was wrong in law…’

Michael Phillips, representing Stephen Green, said:

‘The High Court has three options when considering a case for judicial review. It can give full permission on the written evidence alone, it can order an oral hearing to seek permission, or it can refuse permission altogether. His Lordship has given permission for a full judicial review. Therefore the judicial review proceeds straight to the full hearing, there is no permission hearing. It also seems to be a relatively strong indication from the judge that there is a good case for us to make.’

However, Mr Justice Underhill was careful not to prejudge either the judicial review hearing or any ultimate prosecution. He went on: ‘I should in the circumstances of this case emphasise that I am saying no more than that the challenge to the District Judge’s decision was arguable. That does not necessarily mean that it will succeed; still less that any eventually prosecution would succeed.’

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘Even with His Lordship’s caveat, I praise God that this is the most positive outcome we could have had. I shall look forward to the hearing with some confidence.’

The High Court will give a date for the judicial review hearing in a couple of weeks.

Blood Toucheth Blood

In a chilling reminder of the laws of cause and effect, an American Christian group have proposed a reason for the bloodshed of the Virginia Tech massacre.

On Monday morning, 16th April, 2007, a 23-year-old male student armed with two pistols and multiple clips of ammunition, murdered at least 30 people locked inside a Virginia Tech academic building in Blacksburgg, Virginia, before taking his own life.

The VA Tech senior is also suspected of killing two other students earlier in a co-ed dormitory building, for a total of 33 dead in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.  The mass on-campus killings are immediately, eerily, sadly, and tragically reminiscent of the Columbine High shootings on April 20, 1999 , which killed 15, including the two teen male student shooters.

President George Bush said on Monday, “Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning.  When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community.”

But Columbia Christians for Life, based in Colombia , South Carolina, picking up on President Bush’s words, asked him:  ‘What about the violation of the “safety” and “sanctuary” of a mother’s womb by abortion, and that impact, Mr. Bush ?  Over 47 Million have been murdered by surgical abortion alone in America since 1973! (www.ldi.org).’  At VA Tech’s polytheistic ecumenical convocation Tuesday, President Bush said, “It’s impossible to make sense of such violence and suffering.”

Steve Lefemine, the Director of Columbia Christians for Life, said Mr Bush was wrong.  ‘If you will search the Scriptures you referred to in your remarks at VA Tech, perhaps you will see God’s commandment of obedience to Him, for a nation to enjoy peace and security (e.g., Lev. 26:5,6).’

Lefemine continued: ‘ABORTION, which is violence against children while in the wombs of their mothers, is the root cause of the violence that we see coming out of this generation of youth.  The Bible says, “Blood toucheth blood” (Hosea 4:2), or bloodshed follows bloodshed.  Innocent bloodshed in the womb is being followed by innocent bloodshed around our nation.  The 33 killed Monday at VA Tech is 1/100th of the estimated 3,300 murdered daily by surgical abortion alone on American soil in America ‘s approx. 740 child-murder-by-abortion domestic terror centers (www.ldi.org). There are spiritual principles of corporate bloodguilt and blood recompensation revealed in the Bible which apply when innocent blood is shed upon a land, as in the case today of government-protected child-murder-in-the-womb.

‘We adults should not be surprised that a generation of youth is resorting to violent murder to resolve their problems with others, even when it ends in the taking of their own lives.  The Bible says that God is not mocked, that we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7).  For the last 34-plus years, we have sown violence into the next generation by murdering children in the womb.  God spoke through His servant the prophet Hosea over 2700 years ago, to the people of Israel:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, … seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”   Hosea 4:6 KJV

‘It is time for the adults of America to repent.  We have sinned grievously and wickedly against the next generation.  We have killed one-third of the post-Roe generation by surgical abortion alone, and probably two to three times that number chemically with abortifacient birth control, e.g., birth control pills, Depo-Provera, Norplant, IUD, etc.  We have taught the next generation that it is OK to fornicate, and if necessary, it is OK to “choose” to kill those pre-birth human beings in the womb who are unwanted. Now (e.g., Columbine, VA Tech) we are reaping the bad fruit of what we have sown.  We have sown violence in the womb with abortion, and now we are reaping violence in schools, on the streets, in homes, and around the nation.  These shootings are a sign and a judgment from God Himself.

‘ Virginia delegate George Mason said in the 1787 Constitutional Convention, “By an inevitable chain of causes and effects, Providence punishes nation sins by national calamities.”  Child-murder-by-abortion is a national sin.  Columbine, 9-11, Katrina, and VA Tech have all been national calamities.  More and greater divine judgment is coming upon America , even destruction, unless we repent of the national sin of abortion.’

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, added: ‘It is not just America which needs to repent.  We have just the same anti-life attitude in Britain , the same sort of figures for abortions as a proportion of conceptions, the same determination to leave morality and marriage to the ‘market’, the same societal death-wish and the same sort of disaffected youth.  Our youth are into knives as well as guns, and increasingly carry the latter despite hand-guns being banned after Dunblane, to a chorus of how much safer our streets were going to be.  They use both to settle the most trivial of disputes, or to rob for peanuts, without any recognition of the worth of human life.

‘Britain and America also share responsibility for the wreckage of Iraq , where 200 people were murdered in Baghdad alone yesterday.  We seem able to export and amplify our lawlessness.  Unless we too repent of the evil of abortion, by which in Britain over 6 million children have died since 1968, and begin to rebuild morality and marriage, at every level of society, we can expect the judgment of God.  Nor will it just fall on the lower classes, whom our elite hold in contempt.  It will fall on our leaders as well.  They too will reap what they have sown.’

Summons Refused in Springer Blasphemy Case

A summons for a private prosecution for blasphemy against Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, and producer Jonathan Thoday in respect of Jerry Springer the Opera was refused late on Friday 12th January by Horesferry Road magistrates.

District Judge Miss Caroline Tubbs decided that a ruling in judicial review which went against the Christian Institute had prejudiced criminal proceedings for blasphemy, and that the production was covered by an escape clause in the Theatres Act 1968.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, laid the information for the summons before Horseferry Road Magistrates on Monday 8th January 2007. That date was two years to the day since the broadcast of the musical on BBC2 and six months to the day from when it finished its tour in Brighton last year.

Solicitor Michael Phillips said:

‘In essence, as to whether a summons should be issued, the leading case is that of Ian Charlson. In that case it was held that there are four main questions for a Magistrate to consider. Those are (1) whether the allegation is an offence known and if so whether the essential ingredients are present, (2) if the offence is out of time, (3) whether the court has jurisdiction, (4) whether the informant has the necessary authority to prosecute. In addition, it must be considered whether the prosecution is vexatious.

‘(1) District Judge Tubbs held that blasphemous liable is an offence known to law. However, prosecution, she said, is prevented because of s2(4) of the Theatres Act 1968: “No person shall be proceeded against in respect of a performance of a play, or anything said or done in the course of such a performance – (a) for an offence at common law where it is of the essence of the offence that the performance or, as the case may be, what was said or done was obscene, indecent, offensive, disgusting or injurious to morality.” She held that the application falls within this provision.

‘(2) She also held that the essential ingredients of the offence are not prima facie present. As the High Court considered the case in the Judicial Review brought by the Christian Institute: “I have made a judicial assessment as to whether the presence of the essential ingredients of the offence are prima facie present. I am supported in that view by the decisions of the Administrative Court and the GPCC [the BBC’s internal Governors’ Programming Complaints Commission -Ed] in this very play. I do not find it credible that they would have come to their respective decisions if the performance / programme they considered in great detail, with Christian religious sensibilities in mind, in fact contained the essential ingredients of an even more serious matter – a criminal offence of blasphemous libel.”

‘In essence,’ said Mr Phillips, ‘Those were the main reasons why she refused to issue a summons.’

Stephen Green has asked Mr Phillips to proceed with an application to the High Court to review the District Judge’s decision and he will make a further statement in due course.

Gambling and the Community

1

Research has shown that when a casino comes to an area, the result is increased crime, mental disorders, family breakdown, debt and suicide. Following is some of the primary research.

Increase in Addiction and Mental Disorders

The World Health Organisation’s classification of mental and behavioural disorders includes ‘pathological gambling’ as a ‘habit and impulse disorder.’ In their report on the effects of gambling, The Royal College of Psychiatrists has noted that ‘The experience in various jurisdictions has shown that the incidence of pathological gambling in a population is directly related to the accessibility of gambling and the commercial pressures to take part.’ The RCP go on to point out that:

If the facilities for gambling in the population are increased, the total amount of gambling also increases. It does so as follows:

  • Some, who had previously not gambled, start doing so, so that the number of those who do not gamble goes down.
  • The amount of gambling of the majority, while still varying…increases.
  • The number of those who gamble to such a degree that damage results increases.

Greater accessibility therefore affects the whole population. Whatever the level of previous gambling, the amount of this will increase. Clearly, those who had previously gambled frequently are more likely to do so excessively with resulting damage.

Statistics show that vulnerable people are the most susceptible to become pathological gamblers. In Australia, one-third of the gambling industry’s total revenue comes from ‘problem gamblers’ or ‘pathological gambling.’

Harmful To Children

Casinos put children at risk as parents leave or neglect them to gamble. The UK would do well to learn from research undertaken in the American state of South Dakota. Jeff Blumberg, a state attorney in South Dakota reported that,

“The South Dakota Department of Social Services reports that in the fiscal year preceding gaming there were approximately 300 reports of children in need of protective services. In the fiscal year following the institution of gaming, that number rose to 500 reported cases. Actual juvenile case filings including delinquency, children in need of supervision and abuse and neglected cases rose by 15 percent. In addition to increased felony activity, Class 1 misdemeanors including simple assaults and DWI’s also increased by approximately 70 percent.”

Increase in Poverty

Statistics show that lower-income people spend a greater percentage of their income on gambling. Poor people are the most likely to lose their money on the jackpot while only a handful of wealthy casino owners get richer. Usually it is wealthy foreign corporations that exploit the gambling market, sucking profits out of a local area.

Robin Burgess, Director of RiGT, states ‘Problem Gambling has a profound effect on not only those involved but the wider community around them.’ One such effect is that when people lose their money through gambling, they become dependent on the state.

Austrian ex-pat, Robert Krause, who campaigned against a casino in Sheffield, tells a story that is all too familiar. Beginning with a million dollar fortune, Krause’s uncle eventually lost everything on the jackpot and is now living off a state pension. ‘With problem gamblers,’ Mr. Krause concluded, ‘the Government has to pick up the pieces by providing them with benefits or subsidising their housing. In Sheffield this could cost up to £1 million a week.’

Casinos also increase the overall poverty of a community. This is because gambling creates no new wealth but is parasitic. A casino siphons off money that would otherwise be spent in the regular business community. Business leaders become reluctant to invest money in areas that sustain large gambling industries because of bad debts, delinquent time payments, and bankruptcy.

The Creighton Bankruptcy Study in America found that ‘those counties that legalized casino gambling during the 1990s experienced a cumulative growth rate in individual bankruptcies that was more than double the growth rate for corresponding non-casino counties.’

Increase in Crime

Darren Warner, a senior police expert on gaming, is among many who fear that the new casinos will lead to a surge in crime. As head of Metropolitan police gaming unit, he wrote that relaxed rules could be an invitation to ‘wholesale crime and money laundering.’

Research has shown that gambling increases the number of robberies, murders, assaults, embezzlement, bribes, extortions and insurance-related fraud. Organised crime thrives on a gambling industry. Needless to say, police costs increase whenever a casino comes to an area.

In 1996, the West Ohio Conference Council reported that the American Insurance Institute estimated that 40% of white-collar crime has its roots in gambling. The Institute’s findings indicate that insurance fraud alone as related to gambling was $1.3 billion per year.

The U.S. Department of Justice studied people who had been arrested in Las Vegas and Des Moines, Iowa. In their report, they found significant connections between gambling and crime.

‘More than 30 percent of pathological gamblers who had been arrested in Las Vegas and Des Moines reported having committed a robbery within the past year, nearly double the percentage for low-risk gamblers. Nearly one-third admitted that they had committed the robbery to pay for gambling or to pay gambling debts. In addition, about 13 percent said they had assaulted someone to get money.

Compulsive or pathological gamblers were significantly more likely to have sold drugs than arrestees who fit the other gambling types.’

In the face of all this evidence, Labour officially denies that its gambling policies will increase crime.

Forthcoming plans to relax gambling laws may increase the amount of problem gamblers, warns the British Medical Association.

In a report released on 15 January, the BMA expressed concern about the potential rise in adolescent gambling addiction.  They also drew attention to the links between gambling and violence, drugs and alcohol addiction among young people.

Already, there is an estimated 300,000 problem gamblers, with symptoms ranging everywhere from physical and mental health difficulties to problems with employment, finances and relationships.  This figure is expected to skyrocket as casinos begin opening throughout Britain later this year.

Professor Jim Orford criticised the government for being ‘naïve’ and ‘playing dice with people’s health’.  He said: ‘We could be talking about a million people affected by it in any one period of 12 months, and that begins to put it on a par with drug addiction problems.’

Doctors fear our health system is unprepared for the explosion in problem gamblers when our laws are relaxed this September.  They have asked the gambling industry to invest £10m a year on research and treatment to help gambling addicts.

‘There needs to be treatment for problem gambling available on the NHS similar to drug and alcohol services’ said Vivienne Nathanson, of the BMA.

Government Suppresses Key Study

On the same day that the BMA report was released, the Daily Mail revealed a leaked study by the Metropolitan Police, showing that a supercasino will attract organised crime and encourage children to bet.

The Government has sustained sharp criticism for suppressing the report.

‘It is astonishing that such a vital report should have been suppressed’ said Hugo Swire, Tory culture spokesman.

Pressure group, Christian Voice, has criticised the Government for turning a blind eye to gambling problems in its eagerness to share the profits.  ‘The UK gambling industry may be harmful to families and communities, but it has been a goldmine for the Labour Government’, the organisation announced last year on their website.

Researchers from the University of Trent estimated that upcoming changes in gambling laws will provide the National Treasury with an extra £3 billion a year. Government’s rich friends have also benefited significantly.  On 23 April, the Times reported that Britain’s gambling boom has fuelled a 20% increase in the combined wealth of the country’s super-rich – ‘an extraordinary tripling in wealth of the country’s 1,000 richest people under Labour…’

The Government would prefer for the UK gambling industry to grow at an even faster rate.  Tony Blair originally proposed 8 supercasinos, but was forced by the Tories to reduce the number to 1.  However, documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that the Government may plan to introduce more supercasinos after the public has time to adjust to the idea.

Tessa Jowell, who is responsible for the Gambling Act, wrote in 2004 that ‘gambling is a massive, global industry and is entitled to a regulatory framework that ensures continued growth.’

On 15 January, the Daily Mail revealed a leaked study by the Metropolitan Police, showing that a supercasino will attract organised crime and encourage children to bet.

The Government has sustained sharp criticism for suppressing the report.

‘It is astonishing that such a vital report should have been suppressed’ said Hugo Swire, Tory culture spokesman.

The Government has also kept silent about evidence from Atlantic City USA where the legalising of gambling led to an increase in bankruptcy, sleaze, white collar crime, divorce, homelessness and credit card fraud.

Making Money out of Children

While the Gambling Bill was before Parliament, the Culture Secretary said ‘Gambling is a massive global industry and is entitled to a regulatory framework that ensures continued growth’.

Our Government has certainly kept its word, a rare occurrence indeed. So concerned has Labour been to increase the gambling market that it is now encouraging children to be sucked into it.

The Gambling Act 2005 permits children to gamble on Category D gaming machines, which include machines that are identical to those found in casinos apart from a smaller stake.

In their Statement of Principles on Licensing and Regulation, The Royal College of Psychiatrists has commented witheringly that ‘Only commercial considerations would allow children to have access to such machines. The evidence that they are harmful to children, especially those at risk of antisocial behaviour, is considerable.’
Vested Interests

The RiGT

The Gambling Commission has put The Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RiGT) in charge of researching ‘whether such gambling gives rise to harm or exploitation’, in children. The trust is also responsible ‘to make it less likely that people will become problem gamblers and more likely that those who do will be able to seek and to secure effective help.’ (From the homepage of their website).

Despite these high sounding ideals, the RiGT is funded by the gambling industry. Furthermore, many RiGT trustees are senior executives of gambling trade organisations. Because of their vested interests, Christian Voice believes RiGT is not an appropriate body to undertake research on the harmful effects gambling has on children.

National Director of Christian Voice, Stephen Green, commented, ‘Given the level of political corruption we have witnessed, I am not surprised to find the Government putting the RiGT in charge of helping, so called, “problem gamblers.” The Trust has just as cushy a relationship with the casino industry as has the Labour Government.’

Casino Advisory Panel

On 10 July it emerged that all five members of the Casino Advisory Panel (the body that was responsible for choosing the locations of the casinos) had a conflict of interest. Members of the group have declared 44 interests, which include shareholdings in leisure companies.

One panel member, James Froomberg, had so many conflicts of interests that he was not able to take part in the initial evaluation of 13 applications.

All five members have had to remove themselves from the process of assessing applications at some point because of invested interests.

John Prescott

Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, has also been criticised for having vested interests. Mr. Prescott used his position on the Domestic Affairs Cabinet Committee to deregulate gambling laws and has also chaired the cabinet sub-committee responsible for creating the Casino Advisory Panel.

Mr. Prescott was good friends with Philip Anschutz, whose company is bidding to open England’s first super casino in the Millennium Dome. The two men met socially a number of times. On one of these occasions, Mr. Prescott accepted expensive gifts from Mr. Anschutz, thus breaking the Ministerial Code, which prohibits a public servant from ‘accept[ing] gifts, hospitality or services from anyone which would or might appear to, place him or her under an obligation.’

Mr Prescott acknowledged the meetings but said they had not discussed the sale of the Dome. However, on 6 July, Mr. Prescott admitted he had a formal role with the Dome, and that Mr. Anschutz did give him regular updates.

Advertising

To guarantee the ‘continued growth’ of gaming, the Labour Government has changed the laws on gambling adverts. On the eve of the Super Casino announcement, the Government relaxed a ban that prohibited gambling operators from advertising on television.

At the present time, advertisements by online gaming operators are breaking the law. This is an offence according to the Gaming Act 1968, which is still in force. The gambling advertisements on billboards across the nation are also illegal.

On November 10, 2005 the Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, issued a press notice in which she said, ‘it’s clear that some adverts have been breaking the existing law. I am not willing to turn a blind eye to this and have agreed with the Gambling Commission that we should crack down on advertisers and publishers who knowingly break the law.’

Still this illegal activity continues. The Government has done nothing about it because they don’t want to upset their friends in the powerful gambling industry.

The Bible says those who rule should be: ‘able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness.’ (Exodus 18:21)

WRITE:

If you live in one of the areas chosen for a casino, write to the mayor.

  • Write to your MP. Even though it is assumed that Parliament will eventually rubber stamp the Casino Advisory Panel’s advice, ask your MP to vote against. Point out that:
  • Figures produced by a BBC Panorama program last year revealed that as many as 5.8 million Britons visited online gambling sites every month. In January, a Government report announced that the average UK family spends more on gambling than fresh vegetables, fresh fruit or holidays abroad. These figures suggest that the people of Britain already have more than sufficient access to gambling without needing to build even more facilities.
  • Evidence from other countries show that casinos often lead to an array of social problems, including debt, family breakdown and increased crime.
  • Statistics show that those on low wages are the ones most likely to lose their money while a handful of wealthy casino owners get richer. Usually it is wealthy foreign corporations that exploit the gambling market, sucking profits out of a local area.
  • Even if gambling does promote tourism and social regeneration in an area, the end does not justify the means. Gambling teaches the principle of getting something for nothing and it encourages financial waste, greed and lack of self-control. These wrong values are antithetic to a healthy community regardless of whatever benefits we imagine a casino might be bring. But casinos are shown to depress an area anyway.
  • In their report on the effects of gambling, The Royal College of Psychiatrists noted that occurrences of pathological or problem gambling in a population is directly related to the accessibility of gambling and commercial pressures to take part. It follows that by allowing more gaming facilities and advertising, our Government will directly contribute to an increase in problem gamblers.
  • The majority of casinos are going up in poor areas even though research from the British Gambling Prevalence Survey shows that those on lower incomes are three-and-a-half times more likely to become problem gamblers.
  • Statistics show that gambling puts children at risk as parents leave or neglect them to gamble. In the American state of South Dakota, during the fiscal year preceding the legalisation of gaming there were approximately 300 reports of children in need of protective services, while in the following year (after gambling was legalised) that number rose to 500 reported cases, while cases of neglected children rose by 15%.
  • The Creighton Bankruptcy Study in America found that ‘those counties that legalized casino gambling during the 1990s experienced a cumulative growth rate in individual bankruptcies that was more than double the growth rate for corresponding non-casino counties.’ Business become reluctant to invest money in areas that sustain large gambling industries because of bad debts, delinquent time payments and bankruptcy.

Why Government is Addicted to Gambling

1

According to the Government’s own figures, Britons gambled £7 billion pounds in 1996. In 2002, however, they gambled away £16 billion, while in 2005 the figure reached a staggering £48 billion. On 22 July 2005, Leo McKinstry noted in the Daily Telegraph that 46 percent of the UK population now indulge in some form of betting (this does not even include the national lottery).

In online gambling alone, Britons are now spending more than £5 billion a year. That is more than our nation’s annual budget on defence and transport combined.

In May, the charity GamCare announced a 40 per cent rise in the number of people seeking help with problem gambling. In Britain alone, it is estimated, there are 300,000 people who suffer from gambling addiction problems.

Faced with these remarkable figures, the obvious question is, why does the Government want to encourage even more gambling?

The UK gambling industry may be harmful to families and communities, but it has been a goldmine for the Labour Government. In 2001, our lawmakers abolished tight restrictions on the gambling industry. At the same time, Gordon Brown replaced the traditional duty on all betting transactions with a 15 per cent tax on all gambling company’s profits. This has enabled the Treasury to benefit greatly from the UK gambling epidemic. Researchers from the University of Trent estimated that upcoming changes in gaming laws will provide the National Treasury with an extra £3 billion a year.

Government’s rich friends have also greatly benefited. On 23 April, The Times reported that Britain’s gambling boom has fuelled a 20% increase in the combined wealth of the country’s super-rich – ‘an extraordinary tripling in wealth of the country’s 1,000 richest people under Labour…’

Australian Treasury Becomes Addicted to Gambling

‘If Jowell and her new friends have their way,’ wrote Nick Cohen in the New Statesman, ‘there’s a fair chance that Britain will end up like Australia . As controls on fruit-machines were lifted Budd-style, the share of Australians ’ disposable income thrown away on ‘pokies’, as they are called, grew from 1.8 per cent in 1990 to 3.6 per cent in 2000. Australians lose about £5bn each year by gambling, or £350 for every adult – double what the government spends on universities. Church groups have monitored the divorces, bankruptcies and suicides that have followed. But state governments are dependent on gambling taxes – New South Wales gets 10 per cent of its revenue from taxes on pokie players. If they clean up gambling, how will they make up that shortfall?’

Jerry Springer the Opera – Blasphemy Case Begins

A criminal action for blasphemy against Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, and producer Jonathan Thoday has begun in respect of Jerry Springer the Opera.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, laid information before Horseferry Road Magistrates this morning, Monday 8th January 2007.  It is two years to the day since the broadcast of the musical on BBC2 and six months to the day from when it finished its tour in Brighton last year.

Counsel Mark Mullins and instructing solicitor Michael Phillips made oral submissions to District Judge Caroline Tubbs to support the application for a summons to be issued in a private prosecution of the two executives. All the tests which had to be applied before a private prosecution can begin appeared satisfied, and Mr Mullins explained to the judge the complexity and necessity to gather evidence which had led to an interval of two years between the BBC2 broadcast and the initiation of proceedings.

The District Judge reserved her decision for later this week.

Stephen Green said afterwards: ‘I saw the BBC Songs of Praise School Choirs singing on BBC2’s sister channel last night. As one primary school choir was singing so beautifully, I wondered what kind of society they are growing up into, in this day and age.

‘Will it be one with no respect for the Almighty or for other people? One with no sense of right or wrong? One with no limits? One with no acknowledgment of the sacred?

‘There is a ancient law against blasphemy in this land because the law believes it should not occur. It is as simple as that. If artistic people do not where or how to stop as they push against the boundaries of decency, then the law must step in and tell them.

‘In this present case, it appears prime facie that a most odious and wicked blasphemy was perpetrated against Almighty God and the Lord Jesus Christ.  Clearly, justice must be done.  No-one, be they ever so influential or wealthy, can be above the law.

‘I noticed in Court that the learned District Judge sat under the Queen’s Coat of Arms. The wording along the bottom is ‘Dieu et mon droit.’ The French means ‘God and my right.’ It is a reminder that the judge’s decision is made under the sovereignty of God Himself in the interests of His justice alone.

‘We await the decision of the Judge and ask for prayer so that: “Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.” Indeed the very first petition of the Lord’s prayer is: “Hallowed be Thy name.”

‘The holiness of God’s name is at the root of this case. There is a long way to go yet, but the first step was taken today.

BNP says anti-evolution Christian Voice is ‘daft’

Christian Voice has incurred the ire of the British National Party after exposing the BNP’s secularism, Darwinism, paganism and racism on its website.

An intemperate email sent on ‘Wednesday 5th April 2006 by one Dr Phil Edwards, Press Officer of the BNP, accused Christian Voice of ‘un Christian (sic) hatred’ and ‘supreme ignorance’ of both ‘BNP policy’ and ‘science based genetic evolutionary theory’.

When challenged on the latter point, Dr Edwards responded yesterday that the BNP’s position ‘that white people are more highly evolved than blacks’ is ‘a conclusion derived over 100 years of medical and scientific research.’  He asked for evidence that black people ‘are as evolved as us’.

Nailing the BNP’s colours even firmer to the secularist mast, Dr Edwards (whose real name according to a number of websites is Stuart Russell) told Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice: ‘If you don’t believe in Darwinian evolution then you are even dafter than you appear.’

Stephen Green said today:  ‘Now we know for certain both that the BNP is inherently racist and that its racism is based firmly on anti-Christian Darwinian evolutionary theory.  The Bible is intellectually coherent throughout in saying firstly that we are all descended from common ancestors – Adam and Eve – (Gen 1:27-28) and then that the human race is “of one blood” (Acts 17:26) and one “whole family” (Eph 3:15).  It is that understanding which drove the evangelical Christian, William Wilberforce, to campaign unceasingly for the abolition of slavery.  We are due to celebrate the bi-centenary of his triumph, the abolition of the slave trade, on 25th March next year.

‘The BNP too is intellectually coherent.  If you accept Darwin’s theory, then it follows that different parts of the human race (if Darwinists can indeed talk of the “human race” at all) will be at different stages of evolution, and indeed, may well have evolved from different apes.  For example, the German evolutionist Klaatsch suggested in 1923 in his book The Evolution and Progress of Mankind that Caucasians were evolved chimpanzees, the Orientals were descended from orang-utans while Africans came from gorillas.

‘I have to say, I found it difficult before all this to see how any true Christian could have anything to do with the British National Party.  Now I should say it is impossible.  That leaves those who have inadvertently become involved with the BNP’s recently-created front organization, the so-called Christian Council of Britain, up the creek not so much without a paddle, but without any form of boat at all.

‘If there are genuine Christians still in the BNP in the mistaken belief that the Party is in some way defending the United Kingdom’s Christian heritage, what has emerged over the last few days leaves them with no option but to tear up their membership cards and get out.’

Dear Green, (sic)

One of our members advised me to look at your piece on the BNP – I’m so pleased that we have been able to draw out your particular form of un Christian hatred and your supreme ignorance – not just on matters of BNP policy but also on your total ignorance of science based genetic evolutionary theory.

Needless to say we will NOT be publicising your rant and will leave it to rot in the obscurity which your organisation so readily provides.

Dear Dr Edwards,

Thank you for your email.  Not that obscure, eh, for you to take such interest in our piece?  Anyway, thanks for confirming the BNP belief that white people are more highly evolved than black.

Yours sincerely,

(2) WHAT CHARLES DARWIN BELIEVED
It may be true that Darwin opposed slavery, but equally, he said that one of the strongest pieces of evidence for evolution was the existence of living ‘primitive races’ (‘missing links’ were not thought of as missing at all in Darwin’s day, but alive and living in Africa and aboriginal Australia).  Darwin (born in 1809, three years after the abolition of the slave trade) placed these evolutionarily between the ‘civilized races of man’ and the gorilla.  Thirty-seven years after the publication of The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life (1859) Darwin wrote, in The Descent of Man:

‘At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time, the anthropomorphous apes. . . will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the Negro or Australian and the gorilla. … It has often been said … that man can resist with impunity the greatest diversities of climate and other changes; but this is true only of the civilized races. Man in his wild condition seems to be in this respect almost as susceptible as his nearest allies, the anthropoid apes, which have never yet survived long, when removed from their native country.’  (Darwin, Charles, 1871, republished 1896. The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex; The Works of Charles Darwin, D. Appleton and Company, New York (First edition by AMS Press, 1972) pp 241-242)

In the sixth chapter of The Descent of Man, Darwin speculated that ‘survival of the fittest’ pressures would eventually eliminate both the black race, which he considered inferior, and other ‘lower races’. In addition, he concluded:

‘I could show [that war had] done and [is] doing [much] . . . for the progress of civilization . . . The more civilized so-called Caucasian races have beaten the Turkish hollow in the struggle for existence. Looking to the world at no very distant date . . . an endless number of lower races will have been eliminated by the higher civilized races throughout the world.’   (Loc cit p343)

The British National Party

Recent newspaper articles have tried to discredit Christian Voice and  its campaign to stop Jerry Springer the Opera by suggesting that the British National Party were supporting our campaign against the production.  In fact, the BNP fully support the right of theatres to stage this blasphemous piece of work and the right of people to pay money to go and see it. This is hardly surprising as the BNP are an avowedly secular political party and are ‘freedom of expression’ allies of the National Secular Society.

The articles nevertheless prompted us to take a closer look at the BNP.  We found a racist, white supremacist, paganist, volkist, anti-Christian, evolutionist and anti-semitic organisation.  Angry, chippy and defensive are words which characterise a website lacking in Christian humanity.  The British National Party has also cynically spawned a pseudo-Christian offshoot, the so-called ‘Christian Council of Britain,’ members of which had the audacity to stand outside the De Montfort Hall in Leicester on the first night of Jerry Springer the Opera alongside the legitimate protest of the Stop Springer Christian witness.

Lancaster United Against Fascism said on their website: ‘The Christian Council of Britain, replete with one or two hundred rabid members of the BNP …, was set up by the BNP as a so-called balance to the Muslim Council of Britain. They claim to represent the Christians of Britain, which of course, they don’t. They actually represent a racist though supposedly Christian offshoot of the BNP formed solely so that the party could almost-legitimately jump on the back of the anti-‘Jerry Springer – The Opera’ campaign. The real Christian group who actually are organising the campaign have stated clearly that the BNP is unwelcome.’

Lancaster UAF are right.  We want nothing to do with either the white-supremacist BNP or the racial-separatist CCoB.  Just for the record, we read that God has made all nations ‘of one blood’ in Acts 17:26 and Paul tells the early church in Ephesus: ‘I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.’ (Eph 3:14-15)  We welcome the presence in the UK of Black and Asian Christians, and can learn from and be encouraged by their willingness to stand up for the Christian Faith and for the holy name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

So far as the BNP is concerned, so much has been written about their racism and links to far-right groups that it almost seems superfluous to add anything.  However, just to confine ourselves to material on the BNP website, mainly from its 2005 General Election Manifesto, it would be enough to object to the following:

The BNP’s Racism

‘The British National Party exists to secure a future for the indigenous peoples of these islands in the North Atlantic which have been our homeland for millennia. We use the term indigenous to describe the people whose ancestors were the earliest settlers here after the last great Ice Age and which have been complemented by the historic migrations from mainland Europe.

‘We also call for preference in the job market to be given to native Britons (which the BNP also refer to as ‘white Britons.’)

‘15% of the UK’s male prison population is black, despite black people accounting for only 2% of the total population. … It is an inescapable statistical fact that immigration into Britain increases the crime rate.

‘On current demographic trends we, the native British people, will be an ethnic minority in our own country within sixty years.’

Its White Supremacism

‘We demand the right to be proud of Britain again, and for the English, Scots, Welsh, Irish and Ulster peoples to be allowed to celebrate their identity and heritage with as much right as is accorded to other native peoples.

‘We, as the sole political representatives of the Silent Majority of the English, Scots, Irish and Welsh who formed and were formed by our island home, have one overriding demand: We want our country back!

‘In order to guarantee the continued existence of our British democracy, we also intend to take long‑term steps to guarantee the continued existence, as the clearly dominant ethnic, cultural and political group, of the native peoples of these islands ‑ the English, Scots, Irish and Welsh ‑ together with the limited numbers of peoples of European descent, who arrived as refugees or economic immigrants centuries or decades ago, and who have fully integrated into our society.’

Its Nazi-Like Volk-Worshiping Romanticis

‘We will introduce the requirement that all children will be taught English as their first language in Britain, but also learn about their local ancestral language as well. This will apply to Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Scots Gallic, Doric or Lallans in Great Britain, and Ulster Lallans and Gaelic in Northern Ireland. English children will also be given an appreciation of the language of the Anglo‑Saxon folk and to appreciate the beauty of Anglo‑Saxon culture, such as its poetry, art and the meaning of citizenship.’

Its Hankering Back to Our Shameful Pagan Past

‘We value the folkways and customs which have been passed down through countless generations. We enthuse with pride at the marvels of architecture and engineering that have been completed on these islands since the construction of the great megaliths 7,000 years ago.

‘Schools in England will be encouraged to celebrate May Day and other ancient festivals, whilst the other folk nations of the British Isles will be encouraged to resurrect their ancestral folk traditions.’

Its Weird ‘Iona’ Project

‘Project IONA is a treasure trove of information about the people and places of these islands, a journey of discovery through the myths and legends which have their origins in the early beliefs of our ancestors about their place in the never ending wheel of nature and a tribute to the talented, brave, bold, determined, men and women who have bequeathed to us our own very special place in the universe.’

Its Evolutionism

‘Scientists studying various primates have now discovered that murderous ‘wars’ against different groups of the same species are as frequent among our non‑human relatives as they are among us.

(We also received a telephone call from a BNP official in early 2006 during which he tried to convince us of the theory of evolution and the proposition that black people were less highly evolved than white people.)

Its Rejection of Human Equality

‘We do not accept the absurd superstition ‑ propagated for different though sometimes overlapping reasons by capitalists, liberals, Marxists and theologians ‑ of human equality.

‘… a misty‑eyed post‑Christian fantasy about ‘equality’,’

‘Taking these facts into account, we believe that it is far more likely than not that the historically established tendency (and we do not claim that it is any more than that) of the peoples of Western Europe in general ‑ and of these islands in particular ‑ to create and sustain social and political structures in which individual freedom, equality before the law, private property and popular participation in decision‑making, is to some extent at least genetically pre‑determined.’

Its Anti-Semitism

Runs all the way through, with references to ‘Zionists’, ‘Zionism’, ‘the Zionist government of Israel’ and ‘the war-torn West Bank and Gaza inhabited by millions of displaced, poverty-stricken and persecuted Palestinians’ in which Israel is obviously the bad guy.  Also from the BNP website: ‘It is the perceived wisdom, one which the BNP obviously shares that it is the existence of the State of Israel which is primarily responsible for the lamentable state the world is in right now’  (Leslie Dale) and  ‘Israel is big enough, and bad enough, to look after itself.’ (Nick Griffin)

Its Criticism of Christian Voice

‘Christian Voice get ‘cold feet’.’  (We never had slightly warm ones.)

‘The recent unworthy utterances by some in Christian Voice, clearly anxious to distance themselves from the BNP in a futile attempt to make themselves more acceptable to a hostile media, does them no credit.’

(We’ll let Almighty God be the judge of that.)

The BNP on the So-Called ‘Christian Council of Britain’

‘The Christian Council of Britain has become the centre of news in Christian circles in the past few days. Visitors need to be aware that the CCoB is NOT part of the British National Party and it is separate entity with its own bank account, contacts and set of objectives.

‘Some nonsense stories have appeared in the mainstream Christian press stating that the BNP is secretly supporting the CCoB as if to give the organisation a sinister touch. Well we can be quite honest and open about the reality and that is this. There is no secret; the BNP will help any group of people who feel threatened, unrepresented …

‘So there are the plain and simple facts of the matter. The CCoB is now up and running and while some members of the British National Party may decide that they wish to continue the association and work with the Council that is a matter entirely for themselves to decide.’

(Quite a few seem to have done – Leicestershire representatives of CCoB quoted in the press have all been BNP activists.  Curiously, the statement appears to have vanished from the BNP’s website and is now only lurking on another white supremacist website: www.nationalvanguard.org )

From the Christian Council of Britain’s Own Website:

‘Our aims are to promote understanding of Christian values in Great Britain (Er, what about Northern Ireland?)  and to develop efforts for the benefit of Christians throughout the country.

‘The Christian faith is inextricably twined with the very fabric of Britain, it has historical influence, helped determine settlement patterns, bequeathed a rich architectural heritage and helped determine our very laws.’  (We agree with much of that, but …)

‘Above and beyond all those very visible and tangible aspects, the faith itself has helped define who we, the people of Britain are. For over 1500 years (Is that all?) the faith has molded (sic) our national psyche and spirit, defining our values toward life itself; our families, neighbours, animals, the natural environment and the wider society. Although the majority of English, Irish, Scots and Welsh no longer still attend church or recite prayers daily these islands are still Christian nations.’  (The UK is constitutionally Christian, that’s true.)

‘The Christian Council of Britain is a non‑denominational, non‑proselytising body of Christian ladies and gentlemen who have come together to ensure a healthy future for Christians in Britain.

‘At this time of moral crisis and faced with the very real prospect of the spiritual void being filled with dangerous creeds and cults, now more than ever, is a strong voice needed to reconnect church with the lost congregations.

‘The CCOB will aim to:

‘1. Promote conditions enabling Christians to speak with one united voice on matters of social justice, equality under the law and freedom of expression.

‘2. Work towards the removal of barriers to the expression of our faith and all forms of discrimination faced by Christians.

‘3. Strengthen the position of the Christian faiths as the foundation stones of life in Britain.

‘4. Raise awareness of the threat to our ancient faiths, values and our very existence by false prophets.’

‘The site is still under development and additional pages will be added in due course.’

(All reproduced exactly as is on christiancouncil.org.uk.  Add the http://www bit at the start if you wish to look them up.  We are deliberately not posting a hyperlink to their site.  What do they mean by ‘Christian faiths’ and ‘ancient faiths’ though?  Are we back with the BNP’s Volk-worship?)

http://www.ekklesia.co.uk/content/news_syndication/article_060314bnp.shtml

The above link to Jonathan Bartley’s Ekklesia site carries quotations from Rev Robert West, spokesman for the CCoB, who said things like:

‘There is a link in that the BNP has encouraged and facilitated the formation of the Christian Council of Britain. They are working as facilitators. They are supporting what we do.’

He denied however that he himself was a member of the BNP.  But, he said, the church ‘arose in connection with the Nick Griffin trial.’

The presenter then asked him (Rev Robert West) whether his views coincided with those of the British National Party.

‘The CCoB believes in the biblical teaching of nations. We should live in nations as nations’ West said.

‘If we are to exist as nations then we are to have our own national homelands. In our own national homelands in which our own identity has priority. The BNP doesn’t want the British people to be homeless. Each race should have its own space.’

When asked whether he would support the view of the BNP that people should be repatriated he said; ‘Yes. Provided it was by consent. Not by force.’

He said that he believed that the BNP’s repatriation policy was ‘in line with the scriptural doctrine that races are divided into nations and homelands.’

‘The mixing of races challenges the glory of God’ he said.

Last month the BNP placed online a video of a speech by West, who stated that a multiracial society is “a transgression of God’s will.”

Blair ‘Divorced from Reality’

Prime Minister Tony Blair’s speech on crime, anti-social behaviour and parenting is condemned today as ‘divorced from reality’ by Christian Voice.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

“Until the Government starts to repair family life in the UK, the problems will continue to get worse. Crime and anti-social behaviour have a direct link to the destabilising of the traditional family unit.  In particular, it is the absence of their natural father in the lives of around half the children growing up today which means a generation of kids have no idea of right and wrong and no internal restraints.

“Part of the problem is the way the Government is encouraging promiscuity instead of chastity among teenagers.  That, coupled with an obsession with sex in what passes for our culture, has raised illegitimacy levels to the present unsustainable levels.

“Secondly, no fault divorce means either party to a marriage can break the solemn vows of their wedding day with impunity.  The single most effective thing the Government could do to bring down anti-social behaviour would be to make the granting of a divorce dependent on proving adultery, cruelty or desertion, and for all property and children from the marriage to go to the innocent party.

“For a guilty party to walk off with everything is an affront to Godly justice, and sows contempt of the entire judicial system.

“Obviously the Government should support married families and discourage the alternatives through the tax and benefit system.  But family law needs a simple, radical, legislative change as a priority.  Ending the injustice of no-fault divorce could more than halve the divorce rate overnight.  The Government won’t do that and so none of its ideas will work.  Tony Blair is in denial if he believes that he can bring down crime while still allowing Britain’s family base to crumble away.  In a very real sense, he is totally divorced from reality.”

Bedside Bible Ban Still Being Considered

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is still considering banning bibles from the bedside, despite sending out emails claiming that “Leicester hospitals are not banning bibles” Christian Voice has learned.

The e-statement from Laura Skaife of the Leicester NHS Trust, sent as a stock response to people complaining, said the Trust was “appalled at the reports in the national newspapers stating that it is considering banning Bibles from its wards.”  Miss Skaife is being duplicitous: the press never said ‘wards’, they said ‘bedsides’.  The Daily Telegraph wrote: “The century-old tradition of bibles in hospital bedside lockers could be ended,” while the Daily Mail front-page headline was “Hospitals may ban bedside Bibles.”  Not one paper said they would be “banned from the wards”.  The Sun, The Guardian, The Daily Express, the BBC and Sky News all accurately relayed the Press Association’s original story about “banning bedside Bibles.”

The papers were completely true and accurate.  Taking the bibles out of bedside lockers and sticking them away in a cupboard somewhere else on the ward is precisely what the Leicester NHS Trust is considering.  The Trust should have admitted that and tried to defend it, or backed down and withdrawn the proposal completely.

Indeed, earlier on, the NHS Trust spokesperson, Anne McGregor, told the BBC they were “considering where to store the books.”  Bibles “might be removed from lockers but they would be available elsewhere”, she said.  That confirms the newspaper stories 100% .

Ms McGregor denied reports that the move was prompted by concerns the Bible might offend non-Christians.  It is all about MRSA, she says, despite there being not a shred of evidence that MRSA is lurking on bibles in bedside lockers.  If bibles are stored on the wards in a cupboard, so that patients have to ask a nurse to fetch one, the scope for transmission of infection is even greater.  In addition, one might think nurses had other, nursing, things to do.  As the Diocese of Leicester said, someone may need to reach for a Bible in the middle of the night.

The truth is that the secularists behind this vindictive move are not worried that people might catch MRSA from bibles.  They are worried they might catch Christianity, and with good reason.  The Gideons, who place the bibles, told us they have testimonies from people whose journey to faith started with a curious peek into that bedside Bible.

So with people of other faiths denying that any of them have asked for bibles to be removed, and Sikh and Muslim leaders actively supporting bedside Bibles, and with experts deriding the MRSA angle (even the most recent independent hygeine report on the Leicester NHS Trust website fails to mention Bibles as a source of possible infection), it is looking more and more as if someone in Chief Executive Dr Peter Reading’s management has a secret anti-Christian agenda.  Only a militant secularist could be so spiteful as to deny the sick and dying – and their relatives – the comfort of the wonderful word of God.

This is, like all the things God raises us up for, a spiritual battle, and we pray to see God’s victory.  Gideon director Iain Mair is meeting hospital managers on Wednesday afternoon (8th June) to discuss the bedside Bible ban.  Please pray for him and pray the meeting confirms that the Holy Bible may stay in the bedside lockers of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

You can email or phone the Trust, especially if you have already had one of their deceitful emails.  Please be polite, and stress the wisdom of keeping the Bible at hospital bedsides.

Road Pricing ‘Big Brother’ says Christian Voice

Government proposals to replace the road fund license and fuel duty by road pricing dependent on satellite tracking have been described as “like Orwell’s Big Brother”  by Christian Voice,  the group behind the Jerry Springer the Opera protests, which also monitors assaults on civil liberties.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

“Motorists are already taxed on how much they use the roads, by fuel duty.  Fuel duty also reflects the environmental impact of vehicles, highly-polluting vehicles paying more.

“The radical solution is to ring-fence transport income and expenditure in the Department of Transport, and plough all the money raised from motoring into road improvements, and more importantly, public transport.  It should be possible at least to halve fares on trains and buses and reach an equilibrium where fuel duty is subsidising an envirogated public transport system, based on a re-nationalised rail network.  Christian Voice have already proposed such an idea, in our alternative Queen’s Speech.

“We have a profound civil liberties issue with the Government’s proposals.  The satellite technology they depend on will track every vehicle. fitted with the spy-in-the-car black box.  Motorists will be paying for the transmitter and for the miles they drive, but the spin-off is that the Government will know where every car is at every moment.  Many of us don’t see why the Government should know where we are, and we see a similar control-freak mind-set in the pages of Orwell’s “1984”.  The Government will have data on the whereabouts of every vehicle, and we shall be financing their intrusion into our privacy.

“We must fight this proposal, and push for an alternative which will subsidise public transport and help the environment.  Our counter-proposal does exactly that.”
