Huge Christian Witness at Wales National Assembly

Around 300 Christians gathered this morning outside the National Assembly of Wales’s T Hywel building to witness against the poetry reading by Patrick Jones.

The gathering was something like ten times the number of those who turned up to hear Jones, at an half-full event hosted by LibDem Peter Black AM and Labour’s Lorraine Barrett, a National Secular Society campaigner.

Those present sang carols and hymns in the cold Cardiff air, there were also Bible readings and prayers at the solemn but good-natured event which lasted from 11.30am to 1pm.

Patrick Jones said he was ‘deeply shocked’ at the turnout. His poems allege sexual relationships between Mary Magdalene, the poet, and Jesus Christ, and call for an end to religious worship.

Assembly Members from the Conservative Party, Plaid Cymru, the Labour Party as well as Independent Trish Law opposed the reading.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said afterwards: ‘It was heartening that so many believers came out to stand up for Jesus Christ, exactly two weeks before Christmas.

‘They recognised that it is a serious matter for Jesus Christ to be insulted in the seat of government of the nation of Wales . With Wales suffering more from the recession than any other part of the UK , this is a time when we should be pleading with God for mercy and deliverance, not insulting Him.

‘Assembly Members have had massive postbags over this issue, and it was good to see so many of them coming out and identifying with those opposing the event. Something good may yet come of this, especially if the Assembly as a whole repudiates it.’

Green revealed tonight that he has now emailed new LibDem leader Kirsty Williams asking her to distance herself and her party from the event.

He said: ‘As Peter Black is the LibDem’s culture spokesman, the LibDems remain the party which insults Jesus Christ until Kirsty Williams comes out against the event. It would be good to know that she recognises that disrespect of Jesus Christ and of Christians is not civilised behaviour, and that culture for her party should not mean adoration of the crass, the coarse and the filthy.’

Patrick Jones carried out another poetry reading at Borders, a Cardiff bookshop, tonight. The store hired half-a-dozen security men in an expensive operation and the same number of police attended. Those desparate to hear the potty-mouthed poet were kept waiting for 15-20 minutes outside, which gave ample opportunity for Gospel witness to them.

There was a prayer at the T Hywel event for Patrick Jones to repent, as many atheists have before, and turn to Jesus Christ. The Christian’s prayer would be that just one of those who attended his reading at Borders find faith in Jesus Christ as well.

Poetry Reading Breaks Assembly Rules

The invitation by Welsh Assembly Members Peter Black and Lorraine Barrett to Patrick Jones to insult Jesus Christ and promote his latest book in the Assembly’s T Hywel building breaks the Assembly’s own rules, Christian Voice has discovered.

An act of Christian witness is planned to coincide with the event.

Black and Barrett invited Jones to read his ugly, indecent and blasphemous poetry after Waterstone’s cancelled a promotion evening at their Cardiff store.

But the Assembly document, ‘Guidance on use of rooms in T Hywel‘ says that:

  1.     Assembly rooms may not be used for the display of material that may or is likely to cause offence.
  2.     Meetings must be connected with the duties of the Assembly Member or NAW business.
  3.     Meetings must not be used for the promotion of any product.
  4.     Rooms cannot be used for events unrelated to the work of the NAW, for example, for conferences which would otherwise be held in a hotel or conference centre.

It is plain that the Jones event would contravene all four of those points:

  1. The reading will cause offence, indeed the prospect of it already has, even within the Assembly itself. There is an online petition which I intend to email to you which has attracted over 1500 signatures. You may have had correspondence from constituents and others.
  2. The event is not related to the Assembly duties of either Member. They have taken it upon themselves to hold the event in order to insult Christ in the name of ‘Freedom of Speech’.
  3. The event is for the promotion of a product, namely the book ‘Darkness is where the Stars are’ which is published and on sale by Cinnamon Press. The book was launched last month in a series of poetry readings, even though the main event, in Waterstone’s, was cancelled.
  4. The event would and could otherwise easily be held at another venue.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

“This is now coming down to whether the Assembly can enforce its own rules, and to what sanctions are available, against whom, in the event it can not.

“I note that it is the job of the Commission as the successor to the House Committee to enforce the guidance. However, Peter Black and Lorraine Barrett themselves make up half of the Commission, leading to a conflict of interest in the matter.

“The Chief Executive and Clerk to the Assembly, Claire Clancy, has so far failed to stand by the stark clarity of the Guidance.

“I call on Dafydd Lord Elis-Thomas to stop the event in order to avoid the embarrassment of the Assembly as a whole causing offence and breaking its own rules.”

A public act of Christian witness to be held in front of T Hywel from 11.30am on the morning of the 11th. Should the event be cancelled, we shall have something to praise the Lord Jesus Christ for! On the other hand, should the Assembly choose to insult Him, we shall praise His holy name and pray to Him for mercy. And in any event, exactly two weeks before Christmas, whatever the attitude of the National Assembly of Wales to the King of kings and Lord of lords, this is an opportunity to celebrate our Saviour’s birth!

NOTES: The poems aren’t actually much good, they hardly rhyme, they rarely scan or have rhythm, but they possibly have enough profanity and references to female genitalia to get the literati excited. One of them, to which Christians are taking the greatest exception, includes the blasphemous assertion of sex between the poet and someone Jones calls ‘mary magdelene’ (sic), and Jesus.

Other lines include: ‘All I preach is deicide’, ‘today I have become a born-again atheist’ and ‘god does not die because he was never alive.’

One poem describes God as ‘the first absent dad’ who ‘lorded it upstairs’ while Jesus was on earth.

Another strikes at the fundamental right to hold a religious view and have freedom of worship, as Jones expresses his desire for ‘prayers to be abandoned … synagogues closed, churches morphed into pound shops’ and concludes ‘then they shall all be f***ing saved.’

So Patrick wants prayers to end and for churches to be closed. He, Peter Black and Lorraine Barrett are happy to abuse freedom of speech to attack freedom of religious assembly. That cannot be right either in the National Assembly.

The Rotten Legacy of John Maynard Keynes

Alistair Darling, British Chancellor of the Exchequer, has decided to follow a Keynesian approach for getting Britain out of its financial recession.
Alistair Darling, British Chancellor of the Exchequer, has decided to follow a Keynesian approach for getting Britain out of its financial recession.

British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, has decided to follow a Keynesian approach for getting Britain out of its financial recession.

The words of Richard Nixon in 1971 are an apt description of Labour’s present approach: ‘We are all Keynesians now.’

But who was economist John Maynard Keynes and why have his views exercised such a lasting impact on Western thinking?

This post attempts to answer that question by exploring some of the lesser known facts from the life of Britain’s most influential economist.

The British economist John Maynard Keynes (1883 –1946) is known for laying the groundwork of modern economic policy. What few people realize is that his economic theories grew out of his rejection of Christianity and were bound up with the same principles governing his homosexual lifestyle.

Interventionist Approach

Known as the father of liberal economics, Keynes advocated an interventionist approach to economic policy, which urged governments to use fiscal measures to militate against the adverse effects of economic recessions, depressions and booms. He opposed the gold standard because it acted as a break on government’s capacity to control the money supply.

This interventionist model led to a paradigm shift in people’s view of government and “provided the intellectual rationale for the transformation of the State from primarily an administrator of law and order (as the Bible teaches) into an economic manager with broad, open-ended powers.” (Ken Ewert, from his article ‘In The Long Run We Are (Not) All Dead: The Anti-Christian Economics of John Maynard Keynes)

A centrepiece of Keynesian economics is that lack of private spending during hard times is compensated for by increased government spending during hard times. In keeping with what biographer Robert Skidelsky calls Keynes’ “lifelong bias against long-run thinking”, Keynes argued that when the national economy is faced with a financial recession, the government must spend its way out of the difficulties. In practice, this means Government putting forward billions of pounds on construction projects, schools, social housing and hospitals. If such projects must be financed by debt, then so be it. The theory was that supply would create demand and stimulate consumption, rather than the other way round, as classical economics maintained. This might actually have worked if it weren’t for the fact that Keynes’ advice about lack of spending during good times was never embraced with the same enthusiasm. (See Melanie Phillips’ article “Saviour or Destoryer“)

Keynes urged citizens to trust that government knew best and could manage society’s money better than the people could. However, Keynes was astute enough to recognize that governments were intrinsically untrustworthy. He attempted to overcome this dilemma by arguing that England and America should work in concert since neither one could be trusted on their own (as if one leaky bucket plus another leaky bucket equals a bucket that can hold water.)

Despite the flaws in his theory, Keynes’ General Theory of Unemployment, Interest and Money helped to convert many influential people, including those within the ecclesiastical establishment, to Labour Party socialism (what Keynes himself called “semi-socialism”.)

As one writer put it,

“The politicians loved him: he was giving academic reasons for budget deficits, price controls, and monetary inflation. The younger economists loved him, for his ideas were creating lifetime employment opportunities for them as government economic planners.

“It was Keynes, more than any man in the twentieth century, who is intellectually responsible for today’s looming bank crisis, the huge government deficits, and the eventual default of governments on their financial obligations. He gave the Western economy a large does of intellectual AIDS.”

Rejection of Christianity

John Maynard Keynes
John Maynard Keynes

Keynes (pictured left) rightly recognized the central role that worldviews play in economic thinking. For example, in an essay he wrote in 1926, titled ‘The End of Laissez-faire,’ he criticized the Christian idea, advocated in a pamphlet written by Archbishop Whately and published by the SPCK, that true liberty “is that every man should be left free to dispose of his own property, his own time, and strength, and skill, in whatever way he himself may think fit, provided he does no wrong to his neighbours…” Keynes asserted, on the other hand, that “It is not true that individuals possess a prescriptive ‘natural liberty’ in their economic activities….The battle of Socialism against unlimited private profit is being won in detail hour by hour.”

Because he rejected the Christian worldview, he also rejected the free market. This was accompanied with an almost paranoiac frenzy against thrift, which he pejoratively referred to as the “hoarding instinct.” The General Theory shows an understanding that the ‘virtue’ of saving is rooted in the Christian worldview. As he wrote: “The morals, the politics, the literature, and the religion of the age [are] joined in a grand conspiracy for the promotion of saving.” Elsewhere he argued that the “hoarding instinct” was one of the trinity of evils which also included the family and concern for the future.

Keynes recognized that the principle behind saving – deferred gratification of immediate desires – indicated a future orientation which pointed beyond oneself. He scornfully dismissed such ‘purposiveness’ with his oft-quoted words, “in the long run we are all dead.” Ken Ewert put it best when he wrote that

“The effects of the ‘short-run’ and ‘childless’ philosophy of Mr. Keynes are clear: nearly all western governments have followed the Keynesian prescription of spending and consumption, and have run large annual budget deficits for decades.”

Homosexual Lifestyle

Keynes’ rejection of the Biblical “sowing and reaping principle” in favour of immediate gratification was not limited to his economic theories, but formed the centrepiece of his deviant sexual lifestyle. Keynes was the chief homosexual protagonist of the Bloomsbury group, which has been described as a “sexual merry-go-round” by biographer Robert Skidelsky.

Arguing that homosexuality was the supreme state of existence, Keynes saw no problem indulging his obsession for little boys. In letters to his homosexual friends, Keynes urged them to go to Tunis, “where bed and boy were also not expensive”, while he himself ranged throughout the Mediterranean area searching out suitable boys for himself and his friends. He was particularly delighted to discover that the poverty and ignorance of North Africa, the Middle East, and Italy allowed him to use English shillings to purchase the bodies of children.

Keynes’ short-term philosophy of life held no place for abstinence, whether financial or sexual. He campaigned to legalize homosexuality as well as drugs and believed that a restructuring of economics was central to that process. As he put it in one of his oft-quoted remarks, “When the accumulation of wealth is no longer of high social importance, there will be great changes in the code of morals. We shall be able to rid ourselves of many pseudo-moral principles which have hag-ridden us for two hundred years….”

Defense of Eugenics

Keynes was also a strong supporter of eugenics, a point overlooked by his contemporary devotees. He declared that eugenics was “the most important, significant and, I would add, genuine branch of sociology which exists.”
He was the treasurer of the Cambridge University Eugenics Society during its early years and served on the British Eugenics Society’s board of directors in 1945.

It Wasn’t All Bad

Despite his problems, Keynes early works are scattered with some amazing economic insights. For example, his book The Economic Consequences of the Peace, opens with the following words:

“Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the Capitalist System was to debauch the currency. By a continuing process of inflation, government can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens. By this method they not only confiscate, but they confiscate arbitrarily; and while the process impoverishes many, it actually enriches some. – As the inflation proceeds and the real value of the currency fluctuates wildly from month to month, all permanent relations between debtors and creditors, which form the ultimate foundation of capitalism, become so utterly disordered as to be almost meaningless; and the process of wealth-getting degenerates into a gamble and a lottery. Lenin was certainly right. There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose.”

Keynes asked us to imagine a government that increases the stock of money from nine million to twelve millions currency notes without other conditions being changed. “In taking this step,” writes Herbert Schlossberg summarizing Keynes’ position, “it has transferred from the public to itself an amount of resources equal to three million currency notes ‘just as successfully as if it had raised this sum in taxation.’ Who paid the inflation tax? Those who hold the original nine millions notes, because each of those notes will purchase 25 percent less than before the inflation. The inflation of currency means its depreciation in value. ‘The burden of the tax is well spread, cannot be evaded, costs nothing to collect, and falls, in a rough sort of way, in proportion to the wealth of the victim.’

Understanding that the money-printing policy he came to favour would eventually lead to economic collapse, Keynes struggled mightily to devise a way to prevent it. He settled finally on a capital levy, whereby the state despoils the creditor and confiscates part of its debt held by the citizens. Seizing the money directly by repudiating the debt seemed better than depreciating the purchasing power through inflation.

Knife Crime Battle Can’t Work

1

Following the concerns raised by Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, that the battle to tackle knife crime is ‘clearly not working’, the director of a Christian group warns today that it will never work.

Stephen Green, of Christian Voice, said today that the breakdown of the family, a culture of disrespect and the way in which the value of human life in Britain has been legislated away, have left the Government with no tools to do the job.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘Divorce on demand and encouraging teenagers to view sex as no more than a recreational activity mean that half of children are growing up without a father. That has led to a lack of restraint, to anti-social behaviour, and to children looking to the peer-group instead of to their family for their identity.

‘The culture of disrespect is typified by Rowan Atkinson’s blasphemous sketch in front of the Prince of Wales on Saturday night and by the treatment of Andrew Sachs by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand. People have ceased caring about each other.

‘And with the abolition of the death penalty in 1965 and the Abortion Act 1967, Parliament took the death penalty away from the guilty, by the state, where it belongs, and imposed it upon the innocent, in the family, where it does not. Both measures were against public opinion and in opposition to the laws of God.

‘It takes time for some of these things to filter through, but there is a principle of sowing and reaping which applies to nations as well as individuals. The law says a human life is worth twelve years in jail, or £250 in an abortion clinic. It all has an effect, even if one does not believe in a direct divine judgment for national sins.

‘Urgent legislation to ban divorce on demand and no-fault settlements, together with a new emphasis on chastity in sex education would start to rebuild the family and help people to understand that sex is for marriage and that promises are meant to be kept.

‘Banning abortion coupled with the reintroduction of the death penalty for murderers convicted on overwhelming evidence would send out a signal of the true worth of innocent human life, made as it is in the image of God.

‘With those measures in place, we would begin to see a reduction in knife crime and in all violent crime. We would have a more responsible and compassionate society, and that is a blessing we need urgently today. If the Government’s secularist paradigm means more to them than rebuilding society, more young people will die.’

Welsh Libdems Become the ‘Insult Jesus’ Party

The decision by Peter Black AM to invite the poet Patrick Jones to insult Jesus Christ in the National Assembly has been condemned by a Christian prayer and lobby group.

Christian Voice described the event, due to be held on 11th December, as a disgrace to the Assembly itself. The Waterstone’s bookshop in Cardiff cancelled a reading of Jones’ poetry on Wednesday night. after a 24-hour campaign by Christian Voice.

But Peter Black, who is the LibDem’s culture spokesman, has now invited Jones, a militant atheist, to read his poems, which call for an end to Christian worship, in Committee Room 24 of the Assembly at 12 noon on Thursday 11th December.

On BBC Wales yesterday afternoon, after being repeatedly challenged by Stephen Green, Black eventually agreed to extend an invitation to Christians to attend.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘This is a creepy event at which Jesus-hating AM’s can swoon over poems packed with hatred for Christianity and which speak of Mary Magdalene and the poet having sex with the Lord Jesus Christ. They will also hear Jones’ unfettered hatred of Christianity, which he has somehow managed to convince himself is indistinguishable from Islam.

‘What they will not hear is Jones insult the prophet Mohammed. He dare not do that at all, let alone in the sexual way he insults Jesus Christ, whom he sees as a soft target.

‘Christians in Wales must not take this lying down. We need to stand up for our Lord against this attack on His honour and on the Church itself by Peter Black. He has gone out of his way to show contempt for Christians in Wales . As he is the LibDem Culture Spokesman, that means insulting Jesus Christ is now official LibDem policy. The LibDems have thus become a political party Christians can no longer in conscience vote for or take any part in.’

Obama: Put Not Your Trust in Princes

The election of the first black President of the United States has seen British politicians all tugging at his coat claiming to be his best mate. Gordon Brown said Obama was a “serious man for serious times” and embodied “progressive” values shared by Labour.

David Cameron said: “In electing Barack Obama, America has made history and proved to the world that it is a nation eager for change.” Indeed, ‘change’ was the buzz-word of the Obama campaign. “In these difficult times people everywhere are crying out for change,” Mr Cameron, who also advocates ‘change’, went on. Change from what to what? That is not the point. ‘Change’ is the point.

Nick Clegg found in Obama another convert to the cause of cutting taxes ‘for those on low and middle incomes’ and environmentalism. “Climate change, the global economy, and threats to our collective security now demand a radical new approach by Barack Obama, leaving the Bush era firmly behind. The world will not succeed in this era of globalisation without the leadership of the new American president”, he said.

Interestingly, George Soros, the globalist billionaire banker who made his fortune gambling in the hedge funds of the money markets, heavily supported Obama’s campaign. Soros is anti-Israel despite his Jewish ancestry, and was bizarrely involved in the confiscation of Jewish property during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. He famously broke the Bank of England on Black Wednesday in 1992, making an estimated £1.1 billion in the process. His record in the former Soviet Union shows that even his apparent altruism is designed to make him money. Soros does not give away money to get no return.

Despite the adulation, even amongst some well-meaning Christians, a UK Christian group says the election of Obama is nothing to celebrate.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘Too many people are swooning over Obama because he is the first African-American president and they think that means he must understand the plight of the less fortunate.

‘But his attitude to the vulnerable may be gauged by his passionate support for abortion, even partial-birth abortion, where a baby is killed at the very moment it is delivered. It gets worse. Obama single-handedly wrecked the Illinois version of the Born Alive Act, which grants medical treatment to babies mistakenly born alive after abortion. Ignoring them, allowing them to die, which Obama supports, has been described by even the most hardened pro-abortion advocates as ‘crossing the line between abortion and infanticide.’

‘Unless he has a massive God-inspired change of heart, Obama will switch funding from chastity-based projects to sex education models like ours which promote promiscuity, poor money into pro-abortion bodies such as UNFPA and IPPF, and if there is more he can do to promote the death-culture of abortion and gay rights, he will find it. With anti-Christian Democrats now firmly in control of both houses, he should meet no opposition. Barring a miracle of repentance, it is ironic that a man with Kenyan parentage will bring shame on his roots by allying himself with the eugenicists who think there are too many black people in Africa and attempting to impose the cultural imperialism of population control.

‘Even the hope of bringing the troops home will not now materialise. It seems Obama will only end the occupation of Iraq to deploy those forces in the blood-bath of Afghanistan . And that is all about building an oil-pipeline.

‘To be even-handed, McCain was pro-war and would not have been staunchly pro-life. On other issues, he was so much of a Washington insider that conservatives and Evangelical Christians appear to have been reluctant to vote for him. The best that can be said is that he would have been slightly better at resisting the forces of evil than Obama. McCain’s defeat shows a luke-warm Republican candidate will never be elected.

‘A man who regards the birth of a child as a punishment and thinks the Sermon on the Mount mandates same-sex unions is not a man who knows the mind of God. I believe an-repentant Obama will draw the USA further into its covenant with death and it will take a miracle from the Lord to annul it. The only bright light is, God is working His purpose out, He is a God of miracles and He knows what He is doing.

‘In practical terms, Christians need to be praying for this man to come to his senses like the prodigal son, turn to the Father and choose life. In the meantime, let us forget all the adulation and hope based on Obama’s colour and parentage. God does not do race and colour, He does obedience to His word. And His word also warns against judging people by appearances. On the subject of leaders, it specifically says: “Choose able men, such as fear God, men of truth,” (Exod 18:21) “Put not your trust in princes … in whom is no help” warns Psalm 146:3. “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes”, says Psalm 118:9. The Lord Jesus says: “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24).

‘If Obama does not repent, and if God takes against him as a result, things he tries to do in every area, including economics, are doomed to fail. Then, with the global economic down-turn mutating into recession, the Republicans may yet find this was a good election for them to lose. Assuming they adopt a God-fearing candidate next time round, of course.’

Bendy-Bus toTake Dawkins’ Message Off-Road

Richard Dawkins is so concerned that the atheist message is dying on its feet that he is to fund a humanist evangelistic campaign, Christian Voice has learned.

But in a twist which will have Christians in gales of laughter, the advertising campaign, which will be based on the catchy slogan ‘There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and get on with your life,’ is to be stuck on bendy-buses.

Apparently, an atheist blogger named Jon Worth came up with the idea, but his fellow humanists, not known for their generosity, wouldn’t stump up the cash. Now Richard Dawkins, whose anti-Christian zeal knows little bounds, is to finance the doomed venture.

Should the ads be placed on London ‘s Bendy-Buses, it would be a highly-appropriate move since these have proved to be a danger to the public and are due for the chop under new Mayor Boris Johnson.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘How funny that Richard Dawkins is so scared of the threat which evangelical Christianity poses to atheism and his beloved Darwinism that he has to fund a campaign to attack God. He really is the nearest thing atheists have to an evangelist while his belief in non-belief is held with a fervour which many religious people would do well to emulate, so long as they don’t make themselves look as inept as he so often does, poor man.

‘I should be surprised if a quasi-religious advertising campaign like this did not attract graffiti. People don’t like being preached at. Sometimes it does them good, but they still don’t like it. The advertising space on a bendy-bus is just the right height as well. But the graffiti artists, and indeed the atheist advertisers will have to be quick or the bendy-buses will be off the road in Boris’s purge, taking the anti-God message with them. Bendy-buses, like atheism, are a danger to the public at large.

‘It occurs to me that the addition of just a few words from Psalm 14 would make the entire message Biblical: “The fool hath said in his heart …” ‘

Lloyd Webber Buries Superstar in Eurovision Quest

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s decision to write the song and front a Eurovision talent show for the BBC and his announcement that he will not be back until 2010 to find a Dorothy for the Wizard of Oz means he has abandoned his attempt to resurrect the resurrection-less Jesus Christ Superstar as a result of pressure from Christians, a Christian pressure group said today.

Following the ‘Oliver’ series, the composer, made Baron Lloyd-Webber in 1997, said he wanted to work on finding talent for a new show of which he is composer or producer. ‘Superstar’ was his first choice to fit the bill. But following Eurovision, he will now be concentrating on a sequel to Phantom of the Opera instead.

That will demand his full attention until 2010, he says, when he will see if the BBC and its talent show formula search for a Dorothy to dance down the yellow-brick road will drop gold into the Lloyd Webber coffers.

As recently as April this year, Lloyd Webber said he wanted to cast Jesus as a follow-up to ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria’ for The Sound of Music and the ‘I’d do anything’ casting of Nancy and Oliver for the musical Oliver.

The prospect of the BBC auditioning pop hopefuls in front of Andrew Lloyd Webber for the role of Jesus led Christian Voice to promise Jerry Springer the Opera-style protests and evangelism if the project went ahead. A BBC insider admitted: “Some Christian groups are bound to have a problem with Andrew telling people, ‘You could be Jesus.’ ”

Jesus Christ Superstar caused protests from Christians during its 1970s West End run by portraying Jesus Christ as a mere man, a tormented character buffeted by events. It ended with Him being laid in the tomb and there was no resurrection.

Auditions would have been held across the country and the judges, including Lloyd Webber, who would have been at each venue, faced the prospect of the queues of pop wannabe’s being leafleted outside and young evangelists getting access to the audition room itself.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today: “I give credit to Almighty God for this success. The BBC and Andrew Lloyd Webber have clearly buried the idea of Superstar as a result of our witness putting the fear of God into them. This shows how important it is for Christians to stand up for their Saviour, so that blasphemous shows, which bring the righteous judgment of God on us all, are not put on in our land.

“Credit is due to BBC bosses and Lord Lloyd-Webber, who appear to have taken this matter seriously, and to have found another outlet for their talents. Whether they can save the UK from nul-point oblivion in Eurovision is another matter; maybe they should get on their knees and seek divine guidance. Certainly, as we survey the social wreckage of our once-great nation, its only hope lies in the incarnate Son of God, the crucified, risen, ascended, glorified Lord of lords, Jesus Christ.

Betterware Burnt by Voodoo Candle

0

Betterware have removed two products from sale in a victory for Christian witness. The housewares firm has stopped selling its voodoo candle and voodoo gingerbread set in an embarrassing turn-around.

The action follows a quick-fire prayer campaign by Christian Voice following a news item on Premier Christian Radio featuring just one concerned mother. Christian Voice members responded to an E-Alert by emailing the CEO of Betterware, Ken Wolfe, and writing to the chairman Andrew Cohen and his wife Wendy, who run the Betterware Foundation.

They specifically prayed against the evil influence of the products and the idea that witchcraft is just a bit of fun.

The product description for the voodoo gingerbread candle was particularly bad. ‘Do you have issues with an ex?’ it asked. ‘Someone has wronged you?’ ‘Now you can get your own back.’ ‘Get your revenge’. The candle had five wicks: one on the forehead, one on the heart, one on a hand, one on a foot and one in what appeared to be the genital area. It came in a coffin-shaped box, while a disclaimer said jokingly: ‘Betterware take no responsibility should anything bad happen!’

The voodoo gingerbread pastry set had rolling pin, mat, cookie cutter and recipe card. It said ‘don’t stick pins in people, eat them’. Both products have now been taken off sale, after a week-long campaign by Christian Voice activists. It is thought that some Betterware agents were deeply unhappy at selling products based on hate and the infliction of harm.

Stephen Green of Christian Voice said: ‘This episode shows how vigilant we must be, but also the power of prayer and the effectiveness of Christian witness. We give God all the glory for changing the hearts of Mr Wolfe and Mr & Mrs Cohen, so our members can be sure they have prayed with the mind of God.’

Violent Crime – Sowing and Reaping

0

By the grace of God, Christian Voice was able to send the message below to all those attending the Labour Party conference. We pray for repentance in the heart of the Queen’s Ministers and up and down our United Kingdom.

There is a Biblical principle that we reap what we sow. It applies to nations as well as to individuals. What politicians sow, the people reap. When politicians sow evil, the people reap misery, and the poorest reap it the worst.

The Divorce Reform Act 1969 and the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 introduced divorce on demand and no-fault settlements. The ease with which Parliament said marriages could break up sowed the idea that the promises made in marriage did not matter. The people have reaped a covenant-breaking mentality in which being divorced against your will or any kind of justice is taken for granted and the sum of human misery is increased.

Around that time, the state began to encourage teenagers to have sex with the only moral message being to use a condom. That resulted in profits to manufacturers and an explosion of teenage pregnancy. Now we have the disaster of teenage infertility. Every government initiative, including the HPV vaccine, will increase it, but as all the targets revolve around pregnancy, no-one in power cares about those young people they have made sterile.

An increase in the size of the state meant heavier taxation, and big business wanted a feminised, non-unionised work-force. So mothers were driven out of the home into paid employment. That bit of sowing increased the pressure on families and the poorest reaped it the hardest.

Taken together, these anti-Christian measures mean around half of children are now growing up without their father. Parliament has just said fathers aren’t even needed in families. How is a mother on her own supposed to restrain an adolescent son? How is she supposed to know what her teenage children are doing between the end of the school day and the time she gets home from work? Is it any wonder we are reaping massive disaffection among the young, showing itself in drunkenness, drug-taking, illicit sex and lawlessness?

And with the abolition of the death penalty in 1965 and the Abortion Act 1967, Parliament removed the death penalty from the guilty, by the state, where it belongs, and imposed it on the innocent within the family, where it does not. With those two measures, our politicians sowed the belief that innocent human life, made in the image of God, has no value.

We are now reaping a shocking callousness and brutality in society of which the growing trend of violent deaths of teenagers is the starkest evidence. And it is among the most disadvantaged sections of society that these deaths are having the greatest impact.

No doubt the parliamentary reformers of the sixties were carried away with secularist motives, determined to destroy the family and overturn the hated Christian morality, but did none of them stop to think, or care, that ordinary people, those they were supposed to represent, would be the hardest hit when society broke down?

The prophet Isaiah pronounced woe on those who call good ‘evil’ and evil ‘good’. And woe on today’s politicians, who are so in love with their own importance they cannot humble themselves and seek the Lord. Rather than reject the sixties secularist paradigm, they stumble around trying to put sticking-plaster on burst arteries. March offenders around hospital wards, have metal detectors in clubs and continue to embrace evil, with the mayor, the police and armed forces parading at the head of London ‘s annual display of immorality.

If God has mercy on us, He will remove from office those intent on evil, and replace them with men after His own heart. If not, we shall continue to descend into a mutual hell-on-earth of the politicians’ making. A nation which has just legislated that Christ may be blasphemed is not one which can expect to enjoy His blessing. So our message to those in power is the same as it was in the days of the prophets, and the same as in the days when God incarnate walked this earth as the Lord Jesus Christ: Everything you try in opposition to God will fail. Repent, turn to Christ, stop doing evil, start doing good.

Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. (Micah 2:1)

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, (Matt 6:33)

Totalitarian Britain

3

‘In the 12 months to 31 May 2006 the Government passed 3,621 separate pieces of legislation. Yes, that is more than 100 new sets of rules and regulations for each day of the year. To give an idea of the sheer weight of these regulations I sampled 10 per cent of the Government’s regulatory output for the 12 months to 31 May 2006, counted the pages and then factored them up. It came to a shocking figure: 72,400 pages of legislation and 26,200 pages of explanatory notes – a total of 98,600 pages of official bum…. If the pages were laid out end to end they would stretch for 18 miles.’ Ross Clark, from his book How To Label A Goat

‘I must confess I had always taken Jefferson’s aphorism [‘the price of freedom is eternal vigilance’] to mean that we must be eternally on our guard against any erosion of our freedom. It now seems I was wrong; or at least, I’m at odds with the Government, which evidently believes that the price of freedom is that we should be under constant surveillance.’ Rory Bremner

GRANDFATHER ACCUSED OF RUNNING STREET BUSINESS WHEN HE PUT A ‘FOR SALE ’ SIGN IN CAR

67-year-old grandfather, Victor Abrahams, was fined for running a street business when he put a ‘for sale’ sign in his Ford Escort.

A property manager from Brent, North London , Mr. Abrahams fell foul of a new code introduced by the local council on April 4, 2007.

When told he would have to pay a £100 fine, he asked: ‘why is the for-sale sign in my car window any different from a delivery van with the name and phone number of the company on the side?’ Mr. Abrahams asked. ‘Or why is it different from a driving instructor’s car that has the name and details of the driving school on the side? Surely if I’m offering goods for sale, so are they.’

LIVING IN A ‘SURVEILLANCE SOCIETY’ COSTS £20 BILLION, SAYS NEW REPORT

The cost of living in a ‘surveillance society’ now costs the taxpayer £20 billion according to a new report.

The figure includes £19 billion for the planned ID card system and £500 million for CCTV cameras.

The report was conducted by the TaxPayers’ Alliance and has renewed concerns about Governments habit of spying on its citizens.

David Davis, the former shadow home secretary, said: “This is yet further damning evidence of Big Brother’s expensive tastes. ID cards, CCTV, the DNA database and other measures are a huge waste of taxpayers’ money on policies that undermine freedom and are utterly ineffective in fighting crime or terrorism.’

Currently the UK has only 1% of world’s population but 20% of its CCTV cameras: one for every 15 citizens.

BROWN’S DETENTION PLAN IS ‘ ATTACK ON FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS’ SAYS MP

Shadow security minister, Baroness Neville-Jones, has criticised Gordon Brown’s plans to extend the maximum time in which a terror suspect can legally be detained without a charge.

The plan, which passed the Commons by just nine votes in June, would lengthen the period of detention from 28 days to 42 days. It is now being considered by the House of Lords, which are expected to reject it.

The Baroness commented that: ‘It represents yet another attack, on the part of the government, without justification, on fundamental democratic rights and freedoms that have underpinned our society for centuries.’

According to the Terrorism Act 2000, 48 hours is the maximum length of time in which somebody can be arrested and held without a warrant. The Criminal Justice Act 2003 extended the time that a person could be held for up to 14 days. The Terrorism Act 2006 then extended the time a person could be held without a trial from 14 days to 28 days.

In the important debate over detention limits, we should not overlook the colossal abuses which already occur under the present law, pointed out Christopher Booker in the Sunday Telegraph. Take the case of Ian Thornhill, who was detained for 700 days without being convicted, all because officials had made amistake. Mr. Booker wrote that ‘Although he was innocent – the arrogant officials had made a colossal blunder – he and his brother were locked up as Class A prisoners, with terrorists and mass-murderers. For two years they were subjected to appalling physical ill-treatment. Court hearings degenerated into farce. Eventually, because HM Customs didn’t have a shred of evidence to link them to the crime (for which someone else was imprisoned), they were set free. Although they were wholly innocent, the state had kept them in prison not for 42 days but for more than 700. Yet, by a bizarre quirk of the law, though their lives and businesses had been destroyed, they were not entitled to a penny of compensation.’

MAN ARRESTED FOR DEFENDING HIS HOME AGAINST TEENAGE GANG

A 65-year-old father has been arrested for trying to defend his home.

The trouble began when a gang of teenagers began throwing stones at the house of Sydney Davis. Having had his windows smashed five times in the last eight months, Mr. Davis dialled 999.

The retired builder then waited for the police while his wife and two sons hid behind the sofa as the attack continued.

When, after two hours, the police were still failing to show up, Mr. Davis decided to take action himself. Grabbing a piece of wood from a broken-up sofa lying in his front garden, Mr. Davis chased the gang down the street.

At that moment the police arrived, only to let the gang run away. The officers then proceeded to handcuff and arrest Mr. Davis, who faces a potential prison term of six months if he is convicted.

PRAY: The totalitarian approach to law currently being pursued by our lawmakers and courts is only a symptom of a far greater problem: the rejection of God’s law as the only basis upon which a nation can be governed. William Penn once said, ‘Men must be governed by God, or they will be ruled by tyrants.’ The people of Britain are certainly growing alarmed at the increasing tyranny of our leaders, yet they are stubbornly refusing to embrace the only solution. Pray that the Lord would use the erosion of our liberties as a wake-up call to bring the people of Britain to their knees. (2 Chron. 7:13-14)

South Wales Echo Apologises for Jesus Insult

The South Wales Echo has apologised for an article insulting the Bible and suggesting that Jesus Christ could have been homosexual.

The apology was printed in the Echo last week, just two weeks after the original and on the same page. A website version of the article, by the out-of-touch Dan O’Neill, has also been taken down and internet search engines no longer refer to it.

The apology came after Christians mounted a quick-fire protest against the article last week. Members and supporters of Christian Voice gave out leaflets to those going in to work at Cardiff ‘s leading firm of solicitors, Hugh James, who associated themselves with the web article. Following that, they occupied the Media Wales administration offices reception area just around the corner, singing hymns, before meeting with Simon Farrington, a senior managing editor at the Echo.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘Media Wales’s gracious apology and the elimination of the offending article from the website is a victory for decency and shows newspapers can uphold civilised standards of behaviour.

‘The fact that Media Wales is part of the mighty Trinity Mirror group means the apology is also a testimony to the power of prayer and the effectiveness of Christian witness, for both of which we give all the glory to Almighty God.

‘Of course the article should never have been published, but I am sure that lessons have been learned and a similar outrage will not happen again. I trust that other papers and media will also take notice and exercise better editorial control over the looser cannons in their journalistic ranks. Even after the abolition of the blasphemy laws, Christians will not tolerate insults against their Lord and Saviour.’

But not everyone is pleased at the apology and the disappearance of the article from the web. Atheist bloggers are apoplectic and one of them started a petition, which attracted the attention of fewer than 150 armchair Jesus-hating zealots in five days.

Stephen Green continued: ‘In petition terms 150 signatures is next to nothing. It is so much easier to sign a petition than put yourself out to stand in the street witnessing. So easy, in fact, that some of the do-badders have signed twice, just to be sure!

‘Interestingly, the sad character who started the petition asks Media Wales to do something which he himself could not find the guts to do: blaspheme and insult Jesus Christ in public. He attended a party held by secularist zealots earlier this year to celebrate the passing of the blasphemy laws: http://www.secularism.org.uk/bbbparty.html

‘The funny thing was, it was held at a secret location, for fear of Christian protests! The Jesus-haters gathered in private in some hotel in London and blasphemed to each other, something they could safely have done at any time during the last thirty years.

‘Christian Voice pointed this out a month before it happened and the cowards still did not fess up the location: https://www.christianvoice.org.uk/Press/press081.html

‘So this is a bad day for atheism and a bad day for blasphemy, but a good day for righteousness. Yet again, the Lord has triumphed over His enemies.’

Politicians ‘clueless’ about Knife Crime

1

The leader of a Christian prayer and lobby group has accused politicians of being ‘clueless’ about stopping knife and gun crime.

The accusation comes as Home Secretary Jacqui Smith proposes to march offenders around Accident and Emergency wards. The Sunday Telegraph has revealed that 56 people were stabbed or robbed at knifepoint every day last year, with the problem accelerating as knives become ‘cool’ to carry and use.

Six people died in knife attacks in 24 hours last week, forcing an embarrassing message of reassurance from Scotland Yard. The head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Ian Blair, was summoned to Chequers over the weekend for a meeting with Gordon Brown. 42 teenagers have been murdered in Britain this year, 20 of them in London .

Politicians are urging more use of metal detectors in clubs, whilst Jacqui Smith’s plan includes pushing the victims of knife crime and their relatives to meet knife thugs.

But critics of the plan have said there is no quick fix. Harry Fletcher of the National Association of Probation Officers, called the plan ‘a damp squib’ while broadcaster June Sarpong told Andrew Marr this morning that the problem was a lack of morality.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘There are some areas, and they include the human heart, which the law is powerless to reach. A lack of an internal moral compass, which stems from a lack of the fear of God, means the criminal law only comes along afterwards, when the damage has been done. But if the law does not then administer true restorative justice, no-one will fear the law either. On top of that, society and the individuals within it can be further corrupted over generations by bad social legislation.

‘There are no quick fixes to solve the problem of increasing crime. Britain is becoming daily more brutal because for the last forty years, a godless elite have been destroying the Christian foundations of our society. Rebuilding that will not happen overnight, and only then if the Church rediscovers some courage in Christ’s statements of righteousness.

‘If we track back the roots of knife and gun crime, we have to confront the government-inspired collapse of family life, Parliament’s abolition of a proportionate penalty for murder, and the coarsening of our society, for which politicians and celebrities alike share responsibility.

‘The collapse of family life is down to the legalisation of divorce on demand in the 60s coupled with the state encouraging teenagers to have sex. These two anti-Christian measures taken together mean only around half of children are now growing up with their father.

‘Schools are also working behind parents’ backs, handing our contraceptives and arranging abortions to children for whom they would need the parents’ permission to give an aspirin. Parliament has said fathers aren’t even needed in families. How is a mother on her own supposed to restrain an adolescent son?

‘The absence of a father in today’s families is why young people look to the gang not the family for their sense of identity, as Barbara Wilding, Chief Constable of South Wales Police, said just two weeks ago. In addition, legislators have confused parents about how far they can discipline their children, while social services are only too keen to pounce and disrupt loving families if a child for some reason denounces its parents for the odd smack.

‘With the abolition of the death penalty in 1965 and the Abortion Act 1967, Parliament removed the death penalty from the guilty, by the state, where it belongs, and imposed it on the innocent within the family, where it does not. With those two measures, our politicians said innocent human life, made in the image of God, had no value. Restorative justice is God’s idea, but only the death penalty, for those found guilty on the evidence of eyewitnesses, can do justice for the victim of murder. Being locked up for 10 or 11 years is not justice. Our lack of compassion for the victims of crime is generating more of them.

‘And the more you increase penalties for those carrying knives or guns, the more you decrease the differential between that and murder itself, if the penalty for the latter is just a spell in prison. Having draconian penalties for carrying weapons can increase the use of them. On top of that, our ban on handguns has resulted in more of them on the streets, in the hands of criminals who are only too ready to use them.

‘Certainly our culture, especially in film or video games, is glorifying violence and the use of weapons. Drunkenness and the use of foul language coarsen and demean us all. Celebrities and royalty bear a huge responsibility for the growing lack of respect in our increasingly dysfunctional society. Recently, Parliament, thinking there was not quite enough disrespect already, and knowing that regard for man begins with the fear of God, abolished our laws against blasphemy.

‘We live in a society where all moral boundaries have been or are being overturned. Those at the top, politicians, celebrities, even chief police officers, set lamentable standards of honesty and decency. The irony of Gordon Brown demanding action from Sir Ian Blair is that Sir Ian himself has such a low regard for innocent human life that he refused to take responsibility for the death of an innocent man shot by his force at Stockwell Tube. Gordon Brown himself was part of a government which sent our troops to die in two illegal wars and is keeping them in Basra , according to the Colonel there, so Iraqi children can play football.

‘The Opposition in Parliament is part of the problem. Whilst David Cameron has argued for society to maintain standards of right and wrong, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, showed that he has no idea of right and wrong by parading at the head of the London ‘Gay Pride’ march of perversion last Saturday week.

‘You cannot pick and mix morality. There is an American bishop arguing in Putney tonight for the full acceptance of an activity Almighty God considers an abomination. A church which sets God’s law and His institution of marriage at naught has forfeited its right to uphold any other Christian principle.

‘Both Church and State in our broken land must return to seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, as the Lord Jesus said (Matt 6:33). Only then will everything else fall into place. We call that ‘national repentance’ and in Christian Voice we are praying for it to happen, by God’s grace. In the absence of repentance, from top to bottom in this United Kingdom , we can expect violent crime to keep increasing and the murder count to keep notching up. In short, without Christ, our politicians are clueless.’

Whitehouse Programme Destroys Hugh Greene

The BBC2 Programme ‘Filth’ tonight portrayed Sir Hugh Carleton Greene as a foul-mouthed libertine while trying to send up the late Mary Whitehouse.

Even the music was designed to ridiculed Mrs Whitehouse, but it was Sir Hugh who came off worst, with his character swearing, blaspheming, and belittling his employees and his family while descending into something approaching madness before resigning in the face of the curbs introduce by Lord Hill.

Stephen Green said today:

‘Mary Whitehouse was a pioneer of Christian activism, paving the way first for the Festival of Light and then for today’s pro-life and pro-family movement. Although she failed to stem the tide of filth on television in the long term, Mrs Whitehouse stood up for what she believed, and achieved significant victories along the way.

‘There were behind the scenes triumphs as well. With Charles Oxley, Mary Whitehouse helped expose the Paedophile Information Exchange. That did not feature in the programme.

‘Neither did Mary Whitehouse’s successful prosecution of Gay News, although there was a reference to it as the final credits rolled.

‘Congratulations to Alun Armstrong, who played the part of Ernest Whitehouse with strength and sensitivity.

‘Television bears a responsibility for the way it normalised corruption and helped desensitise society to a secularist agenda in the 1960’s. There is a sense in which the victims of crime of twenty-first century Britain should hold Sir High at least partly responsible for the coarsening of society which has led to a culture of death forty years later. As we sow, so shall we reap. Or, what goes around, comes around.’

Shallow Dispatches Doesn’t Get It

Channel 4’s Dispatches editors are accused of demonising rather than trying to understand the Christian campaigners its reporter followed for almost two years, and of being less than joined-up in their approach to Islam.

The programme, made by David Modell, who has won awards in the past, featured various Christian activists including Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice.

Modell was given a great deal of hospitality by those taking part but never got further than the ‘these Christians are a bit scary’ level.

And Modell’s sycophantic acceptance of Islam and his castigation of Sam Solomon, an ex-Iman who was shown describing Islam as a religion of hate, and Stephen Green, who warned of civil strife if the demographics of Islam continued unabated, were in complete opposition to the approach taken in ‘Undercover Mosque’ , which has just been vindicated by the courts with a grovelling apology by West Midlands Police.

Stephen Green said today:

‘Maybe I could have reacted better outside the Brighton Dome almost two years ago, but it’s an intimidating situation when someone is stalking you like Modell does, refusing to take no for an answer, sticking a camera intrusively in your face the whole time without permission. And it wasn’t the initial incident which made me distrust Modell, it was his evident delight in another’s misfortune.

‘I gave Modell consent for the later interviews, but I am startled now both at his duplicity and his shallowness. He gradually worms his way in, and appears to be all understanding and obsequiously courteous, until he has all the material he wants. Then he turns unpleasant and stabs people in the back. His treatment of Sam Solomon, whom he filmed on the strict understanding that consent to transmission had not been given, then broke his word, not caring whether he was putting the man’s life in danger, was a case in point. Modell in my view is not a man to be trusted.

‘As for the depth of his understanding, it was a bit like filming birds picking up sticks in total bafflement about their behaviour, when lifting the camera to the sky would reveal they are building a nest.

‘Similarly, none of my concerns about the state of our nation, with disintegrating morality leading to rising crime, family breakdown being encouraged in the courts, the injustice of abortion, all of which I aired in the interviews, or any of our other social ills, made it to the edit. The twigs were shown, but the purpose for picking them up was deliberately ignored.

‘Modell found it worrying that I spoke of a looming civil war over the expansionist aims of Islam, and thought we were intolerant to be praying at the site of the proposed West Ham megamosque.

‘But only last week, another Dispatches programme, Undercover Mosque, was exonerated in the courts after West Midlands Police wrongly adopted the same politically-correct head-in-the-sand approach to Islam as Modell.

‘Undercover Mosque showed the all the evils of Islam and the hatred against Jews and Christians being taught in mosques. Tablighi Jamaat, the group behind the megamosque plans, is part of the jihadist Deobandi movement. The 7th July bombers, Richard Reid the shoebomber, and those involved in a plot to blow up airliners were all Tablighi Jamaat followers.

‘It is basic Christian theology that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, was crucified to forgive us our sins, was dead and buried, rose again on the third day, and ascended into heaven. And it is simple logic that if Islam denies all that, which it does, that Islam is a false religion and that its deity is antichrist. Surely that could not have been too hard for someone of David Modell’s intelligence to comprehend.

‘The words of the prophet Isaiah are uncannily appropriate: ‘Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.’ (Isa. 6:10)

‘it is rather sad that with all the time Modell spent and the access he was granted, he never managed to understand what any of us were about, or display any reaction above the knee-jerk ‘dangerous Christians’ level. What a pity to miss an opportunity like that, and sad for him as well to miss a golden opportunity to find salvation and forgiveness for his sins in his rush to make money.

‘But what a peculiar editorial policy applies in Dispatches, where militant Islam in all its horror can be exposed one moment, then its peaceful Christian opponents are castigated the next.’

Rivers of Blood – 70 Years on

Just 40 years ago, on 22nd April 1968, the late Enoch Powell MP told a meeting in his Wolverhampton constituency that Britain ‘must be mad’ to allow 50,000 dependents of Commonwealth immigrants to settle every year in Britain .  He said enacting legislation like the Race Relations Bill was ‘to risk throwing a match onto gunpowder’ and described Britain as a nation ‘busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre’.

Mr Powell quoted a constituent who said that ‘in fifteen or twenty years’ time, the black man will have the whip hand over the white man.’  In a speech replete with Biblical and Classical imagery and quotation, Mr Powell warned that there would be forces working against integration which would begin as ‘a cloud no bigger than a man’s hand’ that ‘can so rapidly overcast the sky’.  ‘As I look ahead,’ said Mr Powell, ‘ I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see the River Tiber foaming with much blood.’

Enoch Powell was dismissed from the Shadow Cabinet and became a political pariah.  The race relations industry which he was so afraid would exacerbate the problems he saw grew into a Behemoth granting money in patronising fashion to favoured projects of its subservient immigrant client groups.  The same philosophy exists today.  The Government’s only answer to Muslim extremism is to hurl cash at it in the belief the money indeed answereth all things.

The so-called race riots  of the 1980s, in Bristol , Toxteth, Brixton and Birmingham seemed to prove that ‘Enoch was right’.  But they came and went and the West Indian population, although still over-represented in certain areas, has greatly assimilated.  Whether race relations money helped or hindered might depend on one’s point of view.

African Christians also quickly became part of the indigenous culture, enriching it as they came.  Amongst the Asians, Sikhs appear to have mixed in, even as they try to keep their culture intact, whereas middle-caste Hindus have simply got on with what they do best, which is opening shops and making money.  Christians from Asia, like those from the Caribbean and Africa , have brought nothing but good to these shores, and many tell how let down they feel by what they thought was the Christian country they were coming to.

Which leaves the Muslims.  Even the mention of Islam shows how wrong Enoch Powell was to see the problem as one of colour.  He should have known better, but like many of his time he was a religious Christian but a cultural atheist.  Parliament had only the year before he spoke passed the Abortion Act and the Sexual Offences Act.  Innocent human life had been further devalued by the abolition of the death penalty just two years earlier.  The Theatres Act would abolish censorship in the year Mr Powell was speaking, whilst the Divorce Reform Act would blow away the Christian legal basis to marriage the year after.  Even while he was speaking of a nation heaping up its own funeral pyre, secularists in government and the civil service were, like the Mole Man of Hackney, just as busily undermining its very foundations.  The problem then, as now, was never black, largely Christian, faces walking about the streets, it was already white atheist backsides sitting in the corridors of power.

But even if Enoch Powell had been as far-sighted as the Christian campaigners who were to initiate the 1970s Festival of Light, he would never have seen the rise of militant Islam.  The seeds were already there in the Muslim Brotherhood, but it was only 9-11 which thrust the activities of Brotherhood derivative Al-Quaeda into the limelight.  Nevertheless, the Festival of Light, to whose legacy Christian Voice must aspire to succeed, knew that it would be the abandoning of our Christian heritage, rather than black immigration, which would lead to the destruction of Britain .

Today, as then, it is not against flesh and blood which Christians wrestle, but against spiritual wickedness in high places.  The wickedness being enacted, anti-life embryology, the destruction of our Christian constitution and so on, shows secularism to be a jealous devouring god which allows no dissent.  Yet even now, Islam is loitering in the wings of the political stage, and secularists have no answer except to use the old race relations model of hurling money in the hope of appeasing it.

But it will not work.  Islam, like fire, will never say ‘enough’.  Unless Christianity is re- asserted as the faith of this realm, and quickly, Muslims will try to substitute Islam as the faith of these Islands .  Secularism is powerless to resist Islam.  Secularist politicians, as we have so clearly seen in the establishment response to Islamic terrorism, don’t have a clue what they are dealing with.  Secularism also leaves a spiritual vacuum at the heart of government and nature, as we know, hates a vacuum.

If present birth-rates amongst Muslims continue, and there is no sign of Muslims becoming secularised to the extent that they adopt the anti-child contraceptive mentality of the rest of us, then they will be in a majority within 40 years.  But the experience of Tower Hamlets shows that the vacuum could easily be filled ten years before that.  Even at 30% of the population, Muslims will want power and they will get ‘the whip hand’ as Mr Powell’s constituent put it, over black, brown and white alike.  Then, if they gain a majority in Parliament, they will want to impose Sharia.

At that point, which I suggest could be in thirty years’ time, the majority may well decide to defend their desire not to live under Islam by force of arms.  Whose side the Police and Armed Forces will be on in such a conflict is anyone’s guess.  The European Union will be powerless to come to the rescue, even if it is still in existence that far in the future.  Germany will be facing the same Islamic problem.

It could of course be that the EU will already have blown apart with or without bloodshed.  Eastern European immigration is now leading to pressures on British health facilities, housing, schooling and benefits, whilst rival gangs from the Baltic to the Balkans are stretching police resources beyond the limit.  Enoch Powell never foresaw that ingredient in the mix.  But if one country, Britain perhaps, were to call time, secede and take back its natural resources, which in our case would most visibly mean our fishing grounds, there could be retaliatory EU naval action which could easily escalate into full-scale war.

So either from the EU or from Islam there is trouble looming.  It could easily become external war or that most bestial of monsters, civil war.  We must pray for national repentance, because only God in Jesus Christ can save us, and He will only do so if we turn to Him in our despair and cry out of the darkness for His mercy.  Christians must take courage and confidence in the Gospel and in the rule of Christ and pray and work for His Kingdom, in earth as in heaven.  God has not forgotten mercy, but time is running out.  None of us wants to say, 30 years hence, 70 years after his Wolverhampton speech, that in a peculiar sort of way, Enoch was right.

Lap Dancing Clubs Exploit Loophole

1

A feminist campaign has begun against a loophole which allows ‘lap dancing’ clubs to open as easily as coffee chops just as Christian activists in Worthing have discovered they are powerless to prevent these sleaze joints from opening.

The campaign group Object, backed by Baroness Gould, Labour MP Lynda Waltho and the Fawcett Society, launched a campaign against the clubs in Parliament on Tuesday 22nd April.

Object, part of the London Feminist Network, says that the 2003 Licensing Act introduced a loophole that allows the clubs to be licensed like cafés and karaoke nights, rather than as sex establishments. Women living and working near clubs face increased levels of sexual harassment and “no go” zones, it says.

According to The Guardian, although the first mainstream ‘lap dancing’ club opened in 1995, their number has doubled in Britain to more than 300 in four years because of the loophole and the marketing of ‘lap dancing’ as a leisure industry rather than as a branch of the commercial sex industry.

‘This categorisation is wholly inadequate given that evidence indicates ‘lap dancing’ clubs are part of the commercial sex industry,’ according to the Object report, published at the launch. ‘Many establishments are run in such a way that implicitly encourages clients to seek and expect sexual services from performers, and there is evidence that this occurs in some clubs,’ it said.

The report says that so-called ‘gentlemen’s evenings’ are being held in places like Somerset’s Burnham-on-Sea, and it cites Stourbridge, Lynda Waltho’s constituency, as having five pubs hosting ‘lap dancing’ nights, and two ‘lap dancing’ clubs.

The Guardian said: ‘In Brighton and Hove, the opening of six lap dancing clubs in a short period of time led the council to promote its own private bill in parliament, aimed at changing the law to license them as sex encounter establishments’.

Residents have so far only successfully challenged a local authority decision to grant a ‘lap dancing’ club a licence in Durham . There, the community group involved had to employ a barrister to challenge the decision and now faces the threat that it will be overturned by a high court judicial review.

Indeed, five local authorities who blocked ‘lap dancing’ club applications have been defeated on appeal. Knowing that, other local authorities, including Worthing , are reluctant to block the clubs because of the legal costs.

Even a long-time resident of Worthing, and one who has led successful campaigns to ban sex shops in the town, the veteran campaigner Steve Stevens, found that the rules had been rewritten to prevent him opposing the introduction of ‘lap dancing’ at the Liquid Lounge Club in Chatsworth Road.

‘I found that under the Licensing Act 203, I was not allowed to oppose it, as I had done successfully for three years in a row in opposing an Rl8 sex shop licence.

‘The Licensing Officer informed me that my being a resident in the Borough was not a valid reason to oppose it – unless I lived virtually in ear-shot of the premises. Neither my view nor anyone else’s in the Borough would be taken notice of. I could not believe my ears.’

Sandrine Levêque of Object said:

“Our campaign strips away the illusion that you can license cappuccinos in the same way as you license lap dancing. The law currently makes it easy for ‘lap dancing’ clubs to open, and difficult for local authorities to regulate them or listen to the views of people affected by them. The industry has used this to its advantage.”

She said categorising ‘lap dancing’ clubs as sex encounter establishments would put the power back into the hands of local residents and local authorities. ‘The law fails to reflect the social impact of ‘lap dancing’ clubs or the objections of residents nearby’.

Steve Stevens agrees: ‘This is a democratic country and we elect our Councillors expecting them to take our views seriously. Our neighbouring Borough of Brighton and Hove have been powerless under the Licensing Act 2003 to prevent ‘lap dancing.’

‘I decided to bypass the Licensing Committee and sent objections to all 35 Councillors. Friends helped me in just five hours to collect 600 petition signatures.

‘The Licensing Officer would not accept these signatures because they were not from people in the immediate vicinity, so I sent a copy of the blank petition form to all 35 Councillors mentioning the number of signatures collected in such a short space of time.’

Mr Stevens, a decorated world-war two fighter-bomber pilot, also enclosed a report from Torbay , describing how the police had opposed a ‘lap dancing’ license in the town. But it was all to no avail. Mr Stevens even went so far as to stand up and disrupt the Licensing Committee meeting with an impromptu speech. He says, ‘I knew that would be civil disobedience and I was uneasy as I had never done anything like this before.’

However, the Chairman simply adjourned the meeting to another room, leaving Steve Stevens to face the wrath of his fellow protestors. ‘My Christian friends were appalled at what I had done,’ he told Christian Voice. Meanwhile, the application for ‘lap dancing’ was approved.

The issue was recently raised by MPs. Gerry Sutcliffe MP, the culture minister in charge of licensing, said the Government believed the licensing legislation could be used to control ‘lap dancing’ premises. He promised, however, to raise the issue with Home Office ministers.

PRAY: For an open heart in the Government to this problem, especially now that a feminist group, to whom they may be more sympathetic, has joined the fray. Thank God for the consistent witness of Steve Stevens and pray that his fellow believers in Worthing would not stay too angry with him for too long.

READ: Eph 4:26.

WRITE: To your MP. Ask if your MP has seen the report from ‘Object’. Ask if he is aware that ‘lap dancing’ clubs are failing to be categorised as sex establishments and that local councillors are unable to take any but the most local of objections into account. Ask him to write to the appropriate minister to demand a change in the law.

EDM: Lynda Waltho has put down an Early Day Motion demanding that ‘lap dancing’ clubs be treated the same as sex shops to give local authorities greater powers to ban them and ‘local people a better say in licensing policy.’. Ask your MP to sign Lynda Waltho’s EDM which is number 1375.

Princes’ Stag Night Binge Drink Disgrace

RAF bosses have been criticised for allowing Prince William to show off to his girlfriend Kate Middleton by landing a helicopter on her parent’s land. They have defended the stunt as a ‘training exercise’.

But it was the culmination of a previous helicopter jaunt that has seen Princes William and Harry criticised for setting an example of binge drinking just as one of the latest casualties has spoken out.

Last week the newspapers reported on the ‘stag night’ of Peter Phillips, tenth in line to the throne, in a public house on the Isle of Wight . Prince William, second in line, used a training run in an RAF helicopter to reach the event, picking up his brother in London on the way.

According to reports, the second in line to the throne downed ‘pint after pint’ and dropped his trousers to flash his boxer shorts during a drinking game in the Anchor pub in Cowes .

Meanwhile, Prince Harry spent much of the evening taking a funnel filled with beer around the pub, encouraging the bemused locals to drink it straight down their throats.

At one point, Prince Harry got into a drunken panic that Phillips was missing, and resorted to a foul-mouthed tirade across the packed house, yelling: “Where the f*** is the stag? We’ve lost the f****** stag.” Phillips, 29, was later found slumped in a shop doorway.

Many comments on newspaper websites from the public were astonishingly congratulatory, with people saying the princes’ drinking frenzy made them ‘proud to be British’.

However, one paper, the Daily Mail, carried on the very same day a report headed ‘The binge drinking girl who suffered liver failure at just 14’. Natasha Farnham started drinking heavily at the age of 12. Just two years later she had liver failure. She was drinking wine and alcopops, using her dinner money and cash stolen from her mother to buy it. She now has memory loss and is warning other youngsters of the dangers of binge-drinking.

The Mail, seemingly oblivious to the irony of carrying the story of the royal binge in the same edition, said, ‘Her descent into a life of ruined health and petty crime illustrates the perils of cheap alcohol and the culture of binge-drinking that grips Britain .’

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘This isn’t the first time the papers have carried reports of royal drunkenness. We talk of “noblesse oblige”, the responsibility of those in the public eye to behave better than the rest of us and thereby to set a wholesome example. Of course with their fornicating and drinking, the royal princes are not the only people in public life dragging the rest of us down. Most newspapers have a page in which the drunkenness of self-destructing celebrities is reported day after depressing day.

‘It is scarcely deniable that the cult of celebrity influences young people into thinking that getting drunk is a cool thing to do. Given that the Continent has nothing like our problems of drunkenness, blaming it on cheap drink and the supermarkets is too simplistic. The fact is, there is a death wish in our culture, and the Princes are not just part of that, but driving it. Before a Government minister rails against binge-drinking again, the Prime Minister ought to mention it in his weekly audience with the grandmother of two of the worst culprits.’

Lords Let BBC off the Hook

In an ignoble move, the House of Lords’ Appeal Committee has rejected the petition for appeal from Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, in the Jerry Springer the Opera case.

Lords Bingham of Cornhill, Hoffman and Hope of Craighead said:

‘Permission is refused because the petition does not raise an arguable point of law of general public importance which ought to be considered by the House at this time, bearing in mind that the cause has already been the subject of judicial decision and reviewed on appeal.’

The ‘judicial decision’ to which the Law Lords refer was that of Westminster Magistrates, who refused to issue a summons for a private prosecution against Mark Thompson of the BBC and the show’s producer Jonathan Thoday. The High Court (Divisional Court) rejected an request for judicial review in December 2007. The House of Lords was the next and final court of appeal in the England and Wales jurisdiction.

Michael Phillips, Stephen Green’s solicitor in the case, said today:

‘This ruling is a great shame. The High Court’s decision was bad law – indeed one independent commentator described it as “without legal merit”.

The decision of the House of Lords, in conceding that there was a point of law at issue – that of whether theatres and broadcasters have a legal loophole to blaspheme – but declining to hear it on a pretext, brings the Jerry Springer the Opera case to an end. It means there is no redress in British law against those who portrayed Jesus Christ on stage and on the BBC as an infantile coprophiliac, told by the character of Jerry Springer in the show to ‘Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.’ Apparently Jesus Christ, Mary the mother of the Lord and Almighty God may now be ridiculed and insulted on stage and by broadcasters free from the sanctions of the law.

Stephen Green said,

‘Contrary to the finding of these Law Lords, it is indeed a matter of great general public importance at this very time that the Almighty Creator of the universe and the Saviour of mankind have been insulted and vilified in this United Kingdom. It brings down the judgment of God on us all. I love my neighbour and I do not want that to happen.

‘Christians will now have to take matters into their own hands when Christ is insulted on stage and on screen. As it happens, our campaign against the theatre tour of Jerry Springer the Opera was highly successful, by the grace of God. The producers and theatres lost a fortune and Stewart Lee himself said it was ‘ruined’. Blasphemy isn’t going to happen on stage in the United Kingdom, it’s just that unless and until this loophole is closed, Christians will have to find avenues other than those of the law.

‘To be frank, the decision of their Lordships Bingham, Hoffman and Hope is a blatant, shameless political manoeuvre by a God-defying elite intent on looking after their own. Lord Hoffman in particular has voted in the House of Lords for no-fault divorce and for gay rights. A judge like that would always be prejudiced against those seeking to uphold righteousness. Furthermore, and in retrospect, it seems there was no way the Establishment could countenance the Director of General of the BBC appearing in the dock accused of blasphemy. So first the Divisional Court, then the House of Lords, jumped through hoops to get him off.

‘In doing so, they have conveniently forgotten a first Biblical principle of the law, not to show partiality: ‘Thou shalt hear the small as well as the great.’ The cases of the Bishop of Hereford and Andrew McLintock, and now this one, show that Christians cannot expect justice any more. There will be rare exceptions, but in general, the playing field is now on quite a slant.’

The House of Lords is due to debate the abolition of the offence of blasphemy on Wednesday this week. Christian Voice is praying that the law will be strengthened rather than abolished.

Stephen Green concluded:

‘If this is to remain a Christian country, with the Archbishop of Canterbury crowning the future king, Parliament needs to legislate quickly to protect the honour of Jesus Christ, who is always the blasphemer’s target, in whichever medium he is insulted. It is ridiculous for theatres and broadcasters to be exempt from the blasphemy law. This loophole must be closed.’

Michael Phillips added:

‘Recently there has been another blasphemy which we believe has fallen foul of the law, namely the grotesque statue of the Lord Jesus Christ with an attached phallus in the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. Many Christians from all backgrounds demonstrated against this, and the strength of feeling ran high. Many expressed a desire to take direct action against the statue, but desisted. Those same people are willing to assist in a private prosecution for blasphemy. Were this law to be abolished where would their redress be? The police showed no interest in dealing with these people’s grievances and the art centre kept the statue in place until the end of the exhibition.’

The exhibition ran until 20th January, when the pornographic statue was returned to Anita Zabludowicz, wife of Poju Zabludowicz, the high-profile chairman of the Britain Israel Communications and Research Council (BICOM) and a member of the Jewish Leadership Council. There have been calls from within both the Christian and Jewish community for the blasphemous and offensive statue, which has soured relations between pro-Israel evangelicals and Jews, to be destroyed by its owners.
