Why Obama Needs a War with Syria

American President, Barack Obama, has begun another week of trying to persuade the American people that it is in the nation’s best interest to go to war with Syria.

The President’s unrelenting publicity campaign follows on the heels of a tense G20 conference in St Petersburg, where he clashed with Russian President, Vladimir Putin, over whether an attack against Syria would be justified.

Vladimir Putin has made clear that if America attacks Syria, Russia will stand by Bashar al-Assad, while Iran and China have also shown support for the Syrian regime. The grisly prospect of having to fight a war on three fronts (Syria, Iran and China) has not deterred President Obama from his goal of trying to convince the world that everyone will be safer once America starts launching bombs into Damascus.

In a press conference on the problem (see video below or transcript here), President Obama argued that the nations of the world need to “set aside [their] differences” and attack Syria.

(Those who are accustomed to hearing President Obama speak are used to hearing him talk of “setting aside our differences” as shorthand for “everyone needs to just agree with me.”)

Obama argued that “unless the international community is willing to put massive numbers of troops on the ground” that “we’re not going to get a long-term military solution for the country.” Short of a full solution, however, he said he would be satisfied if “this particular problem of using chemical weapons on children” could at least be dealt with.

Taken at face value, this means that Obama would be satisfied merely to ensure no further chemical attacks even if the rest of Syria’s problems (i.e., their the civil war) are not dealt with.

Secretary of State, John Kerry, was one person who apparently took the President at his word. In a press briefing in London earlier today, Mr Kerry announce that Syria could avoid an American attack if Assad turns “over every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community within the next week…”

Embarrassed by Mr Kerry’s proposal, the war-eager Obama had his administration rush to clarify what Mr Kerry had really meant, claiming he was merely “making a rhetorical argument.” But before the White House could kill Mr Kerry’s proposal with the death of a thousand qualifications, Russia put forward a concrete plan for implementing Kerry’s conditions. Assad subsequently welcomed the plan, which would involve turning over his arsenal of chemical weapons to international control.

This would be a convenient way to end a conflict that has brought the world perilously close to World War Three. If all parties accept this proposal, America could claim that their fighting talk paid off, that Assad backed down when faced with the prospect of an American attack. But al-Assad could also save face, claiming that his willingness to hand over his chemical weapons proves that he has nothing to hide because he never used them in the first place.

Unfortunately, it is uncertain whether Obama will agree to such a straight-forward solution, or whether he will try to impose additional demands that he knows al-Assad cannot agree to accept. The problem, of course, is that Obama’s moral outrage with al-Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons was never the real issue for him, even though he has used this as the justification for needing to go to war.

The fact is America was covertly supporting the Syrian rebels long before the recent issue of chemical weapons came up. In March this year, the New York Times reported that the America’s Central Intelligence Agency had expanded an airlift of arms and equipment to insurgent militants that had been occurring since early 2012, totalling around 3,500 tons of military equipment in total. This coincided with a series of rebel victories. America kept up the momentum, and in June this year Ben Rhodes, U.S. deputy national security adviser, revealed that America was stepping up the assistance it was giving to rebel groups, hoping to finally tip the balance to help the insurgents overthrow al-Assad’s government. The announcement coincided with the emergence of new lethal weapons in the hands of rebel forces.

Notice that this support of the rebels was before the 21 August chemical attack, which is now being used as justification for America getting involved. The fact is that Obama was already fighting an unofficial war against al-Assad long before the chemical attack allowed him to claim the moral high ground. That would explain why he was initially hesitant with a solution that merely guaranteed al-Assad would hand over his chemical weapons, and why his first reaction was to try to squash the significance of Kerry’s diplomatic proposal.

Behind the smoke-screen of humanitarian concern lies America’s support for the, so called, ‘Arab Spring’ movement.  Any time radical Muslims group together to try to overthrow a dictator, Obama has been right there to support the radicals. Many people don’t realize it, but the United States is also currently training rebel groups in both Jordan and Turkey.

Obama has said that if the international community does not react to an incident of gassing, then “international norms” all over the world will begin crumbling. If Obama really did believe this, then he would be obligated to bomb America, who has been complicit in far more chemical attacks than al-Assad. then he would have attacked North Korea long ago. It is well-established and uncontroversial that for decades North Korea has had Nazi-style concentration camps where inhuman practices occur that include gassing people to death. If the United States is really tasked with the job of acting as an international police force against rogue nations, and if Obama really is being motivated by humanitarian concerns, why has he focused on Syria and ignored the far greater human rights violations in North Korea?

So what has really been motivating Obama?

Gaining control of Syria is central to America’s long-term ambition of crippling Russia. Russia has never been a team player, while their prioritization of national interests creates barriers to the spread of global consumer markets.

Controlling Syria would also enable America to cripple Russia’s military. Russia has a strong naval presence along the major Syrian ports of Latakia and Tartus, giving them access to the Mediterranean. If Syria falls into the hands of America, then so would these strategic ports.

Oil is another important issue. In order for the West to suppress Russia and gain control of the energy markets, they must gain control of Syria. Currently oil is supplied to Western Europe through Russia’s Druzhba pipeline. Syria is a key alternative energy transit route to Europe that would break the West’s dependence on Russia. That is why, in 2009, America supported Qatar’s proposal for a gas pipeline from the Gulf to Turkey that would travel through Syria to the Mediterranean and into Europe. But al-Assad refused to play ball, making deals with Russia instead, and refusing to let the Qatar pipeline pass through their land. If the United States assists in a regime change in Syria, then they will be in a position to control the future government of the nation, enabling them to revisit the Qatar pipeline idea. (Syria is also the site of a proposed pipeline controlled by Iran and its allies, which would supply Western Europe and undercut America’s energy interests in favour of Russia. America is against this idea, but to prevent it from happening they must control Syria.)

It is also possible that Obama’s own pro-Muslim sympathies may be playing a significant role in his eagerness to attack Syria. It is no secret that al-Assad’s regime, for all its problems, has kept at bay the fundamentalist Muslim elements that would otherwise turn Syria into a Muslim state. Already we are getting a foretaste of what would happen if the rebels are victorious. Since the civil war began, Christians throughout Syria have been being killed, tortured, and raped at the hands of the very rebels that Obama has been supporting. (This gruesome video shows just how far the Obama-Backed Syrian jihadists are willing to go in their blood-thirsty activities.) Last Saturday the Free Syrian Army, which Secretary of State John Kerry and Senator John McCain have both described as ‘moderates’, attacked a Christian village and posted videos of the slaughter on Youtube.

We know Obama is pro-Muslim, as that much is clear from his video congratulating ISNA, a group linked to both the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. “My administration is proud to be your partner,” he said in a video praising the achievements of the group whose mother organization has been burning churches in Egypt. Obama has also aligned himself with those who have sought to criminalize all criticism of Islam. Moreover, though it has yet to be substantiated, many believe there is evidence that President Obama is actually a member of the Muslim brotherhood. Saad Al-Shater, the son of imprisoned Muslim Brotherhood leader Khairat Al-Shater, claims his father “had in his hand” information, documents and recordings that could put Obama in prison. As the evidence has not yet been made public, we are not in a position to comment on it. But this much is clear: Obama has been supporting the jihadists who have been systematically butchering Syria’s struggling Christian population.

Speaking about Parliament’s decision not to go to war with Syria last week, Vladimir Putin said he was surprised to see Britain no longer following America’s lead, as it had in the past.

In an interview which was recorded on video, the Russian President went on to appeal to Obama as a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Echoing comments I made in a 2010 article titled ‘Is Obama a Man of Peace?‘, Putin asked Obama to consider carefully whether war with Syria is really in the interest of world peace.

Putin He also challenged America to bring forward the evidence they claim to possess showing that Assad’s regime used chemical weapons against the rebel forces.

Elsewhere Putin raised concern for the way Christians are suffering persecution throughout the Middle East, including Syria, a topic on which President Obama has remained silent.

Obama Launches Unofficial War Against Syria

President Obama has been having as much difficulty getting Congress to approve his plan to go to war with Syria as David Cameron had trying to convince Parliament. But that has not stopped Obama waging an unofficial war against Syria.

In March this year, the New York Times reported that the America’s Central Intelligence Agency had expanded an airlift of arms and equipment to insurgent militants that had been occurring since early 2012, totalling around 3,500 tons of military equipment in total. This coincided with a series of rebel victories.

America has kept up the momentum, and in June this year Ben Rhodes, U.S. deputy national security adviser, revealed that America was stepping up the assistance it was giving to rebel groups, hoping to finally tip the balance to help the insurgents overthrow al-Assad’s government. The announcement coincided with the emergence of new lethal weapons in the hands of rebel forces.

Last Monday the New York Times reported that the first 50-man cell of fighters who have been trained by the CIA, are beginning to sneak into Syria to help try to overthrow the government.

Syria can now be added to Obama’s long list of undeclared wars. The only thing Congress has stopped Obama from doing is going to war officially with Syria.

Time to Stop Meddling in the Middle East

Given the history of America’s involvement in the Middle East, their intervention in Syria seems the height of madness. The intervention of America and Britain in Iraq resulted in a hard-line Islamic takeover and the eviction or extermination of the native Christians living in Iraq, as Andre Doran showed in his must-read article How the Iraq War Became a War on Christians and Why Supporting Syria’s Rebels May Extinguish Christianity in its Oldest Environs.’ Doran explains that many Iraqi Christians died, while countless others fled to Syria where they thought they would be safe. And now Western powers are seeking to empower the very forces that are persecuting the Christian population in Syria.

Iran was a parallel situation in the mid 20th century, as I discussed in my article 2010 post ‘Foreign Policy.’ Our interference in Egypt was another case in point, leading to more killing of Christians, not less, as I showed in my article Egypt: I Did Warn About This.’ And this doesn’t even include the disastrous results of America’s intervention in Libya and Afghanistan (for that, see my Examiner article ‘Why American Should Stop Meddling in the Middle East.’)

A problem with the West involving itself in Syria’s conflict, apart from the fact that it is none of their business, is the simple fact that America has chosen to support the wrong side. No one is claiming that al-Assad’s authoritarian government has been godly; however, the prospect of what might emerge if his government is overthrown is almost unthinkable. Yonadam Kanna, a member of the Iraqi National Assembly and Secretary General for the Assyrian Democratic Movement warned that the collapse of the Syrian state would be a jihadist triumph and endanger Christians throughout the entire Middle East.

Schools not grooming children! Shock! Horror!

INDYThe Independent has a front page article today promoting a pro-homosexual campaign by the British Humanist Association.

The BHA, a registered charity which regularly engages in political campaigning, has just found out that over 40 schools, mainly academies, are insisting that teachers should not promote homosexuality to their pupils.

Given the levels of disease, the promiscuity, the degradation and the perversion inherent in the homosexual lifestyle, anyone with any sense of care for the young would have thought this was only sensible.  A robust child-centred view would see promotion of homosexuality to 13-16 year-olds in the same light as grooming.

Parents send their children to school to get an education, not to be indoctrinated with the personal predilictions of teachers and ‘sex workers’.  Most parents would regard ‘pro-gay’ teaching as child abuse.

But no, for the BHA and the Indy, it’s ‘The Return of Section 28’, the measure brought in under Margaret Thatcher at the instigation of Baroness Knight, Sir William Shelton, the Earl of Halsbury and others, to ban ‘gay lessons’.  The Indy quoted Peter Tatchell in support of its stance without mentioning his contribution to the notorious pro-paedophilia book ‘The Betrayal of Youth’ in 1986.  A leader-writer claimed ‘gay is perfectly natural’.

Wes Streeting, who is ‘head of education’ at the pro-sodomy organisation Stonewall, claimed that Section 28 had a ‘deeply damaging effect on the education and well-being of so many young people’.  Actually, it may have saved very many more from being recruited into homosexual practice and the ‘gay’ lifestyle.

Not many parents know that the Equality Act 2010 put an obligation on public authorities to promote homosexuality and that includes LEA schools.  Academies appear to be outside that obligation, but are still subject to the Sexual Orientation regulations which say homosexuals should not be discriminated against in the provision of goods and services.  There is no evidence of discrimination in any of these schools.  Furthermore,  there is no national sex education curriculum.  School governing bodies have the responsibility of drawing one up themselves.

The Department for Education, the DfE, said: “All schools can draw up their own sex-education policy, but they must ensure they do not discriminate on grounds of sexual orientation. Our guidance makes it clear that schools should not promote any sexual orientation. The DfE will be looking into these schools.”

Disturbingly, instead of standing up for themselves, the schools immediately began running for cover.  According to the Indy:

‘In its first statement of its sex education policy, the Castle View Enterprise Academy in Sunderland could not have been clearer. It said: “The Governing Body will not permit the promotion of homosexuality.”

‘After being contacted by The Independent, it deleted the guidance from its website. The academy said the “incorrect information” was “one of several policy drafts shared by schools and project management companies as examples before the academy opened”. It said the policy had never been approved by its governing body. Principal Janet Bridges said: “We are thankful this administrative error has been brought to our attention and apologise for any upset it may have caused.”

‘An identical phrase was used by Colston’s Girls’ School, Bristol. And it executed a similar U-turn when contacted by the Liberal Democrat MP for Bristol West, Stephen Williams. He said: “I was amazed when I saw it and assumed at first it was some old policy from when it was a private school.”

‘Other schools are expected to rapidly delete similar guidance.’

Holding the Winter Olympics in Russia has turned into a jamboree for the professionally aggrieved.

Stephen Fry, described as an ‘actor, author and television presenter’ has written an open letter to Prime Minister David Cameron condemning what he describes as the “toxic mix of shaven headed thuggery and bigoted religion” currently ‘being used to demonise LGBT communities in Russia’.  As if there are no shaven-headed homosexual thugs and bigots.

Nick Griffin, leader of the British National Party, told Fry to “get over it”.  David Cameron said he was against a boycott.

However, A Downing Street spokesman said the Government remained ”greatly concerned“ about restrictions on the promotion of sodomy in Russia and said Mr Cameron had raised the issue directly with President Putin.  President Obama has also raised concerns, as well he might.   He has also declined to meet President Putin.  What with whistle-blower Snowden and now this attack on his nearest and dearest, it would make any President concerned to defend immorality flounce out of a summit.

The flurry of interest has arisen since Russia’s lower house of parliament, the Duma, passed a law prohibiting the provision of information about homosexuality to people under 18.  A fine can be imposed for promoting the Western man’s vice.

The WInter Olympics are due to be held in the Russian town of Sochi in February 2014.

By the way, has anyone else been struck by the uncanny similarlity between Stephen Fry and Nick Griffin?  Can they by any chance be related?  Or at least related to a common porcine ancestor?  Not that we do evolution here.

Proving Godwin’s Law, that at some stage Nazi Germany will be mentioned in any online discussion, Fry got his over-the-top retaliation in first, saying:

“The 1936 Berlin Olympics proceeded under the exultant aegis of a tyrant who had passed into law an act which singled out for special persecution a minority whose only crime was the accident of their birth.

”Putin is eerily repeating this insane crime, only this time against gay Russians.

“I am gay. I am a Jew. My mother lost over a dozen of her family to Hitler’s anti-Semitism. I for one, weep at seeing history repeat itself.”

I, for one, weep at the misuse of the comma, but I shan’t be writing to David Cameron about it..

Christians Suffer Under the ‘Arab Spring’

Christian minorities are facing unprecedenChristians killed in Middle Eastted fear and exodus in the Middle East as they become casualties of the Arab Spring movement.

Throughout the Middle East, churches are being attacked. Christians are being killed, and the population of believers continues to diminish.

These concerns were raised by Joseph Wakim in his recent article, ‘Christian minorities a casualty of the Arab Spring.

Wakim writes:

Emerging democracies in the ‘Arab Spring’ may have claimed an innocent casualty: Christian minorities.

If the crudest consequence of elections is ‘majority rules’, then minorities need protection. Westerners who laud the ‘Arab Spring’ cannot have it both ways, waving the carrot of democracy with one hand while waving a big stick with the other hand if Islamic values prevail. While a constitution may enshrine safeguards, this depends on who constitutes the majority….

It is the height of arrogance to laud Arab societies for ‘importing’ western ideologies of democracy, when in fact the new generation of Arabs have their own aspirations and ideologies. Ironically, it is the importing of ideologies of theocracy from US-allied Gulf states that has hijacked the pro-democracy uprisings, but rarely registered on the Western radar. Indeed, it is these ideologies of sectarian supremacy, rather than Islam or Muslims per se, that pose the biggest threat of extinction to the indigenous Christians.

Elsewhere in the article he gives some sobering statistics about Christianity in the Middle East::

The statistics are staggering: A century ago, one in five Arabs were Christian, whereas now they number one in 20.

The sectarian war in Iraq after the 2003 US-led invasion has halved the Christian population to less than 400,000.

Why Feminine Modesty is Important

We unwittingly created a storm of controversy earlier in the month when we posted Jessica Rey’s video on the evolution of the swimsuit.

Rey shared research from brain scientists at Princeton University who performed MRI brain scans on men while showing them pictures of women in bikinis. The researchers then repeated the experiment while showing the same men pictures of women who were dressed modestly. The brain scans found that men responded to immodest woman like they would respond to a thing, whereas the same men responded to women who were dressed modestly as persons.

In response to this research and to other considerations, Jessica Rey has been designing a line of modest swimsuits for women. While not all of her designs are completely modest, she is at least moving in the right direction by raising consciousness about this important issue.

Not everyone agrees that it is appropriate to raise these issues, or to even question the multi-billion dollar Big Bikini industry. Indeed, the video we posted already has numerous comments from detractors, as well as some unpublished offensive comments from angry men who are scandalized that we would even think to question the bikini. One commenter said “What pitiful little cowards you are” and “out here in the real world, 99.99999% of people couldn’t care less what she or you two idiots think about anything, let alone swimwear…. you moron.”

Er…okay.

How the Bikini Objectifies Women

Unfortunately, none of our opponents even bothered to try to interact with the aforementioned Princeton study, which shows that those who champion female modesty now have a growing body of scientific research to back them up. As CNN reported,

human brainNew research shows that, in men, the brain areas associated with handling tools and the intention to perform actions light up when viewing images of women in bikinis.

The research was presented this week by Susan Fiske, professor of psychology at Princeton University, at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science….

A supplementary study on both male and female undergraduates found that men tend to associate bikini-clad women with first-person action verbs such as I “push,” “handle” and “grab” instead of the third-person forms such as she “pushes,” “handles” and “grabs.” They associated fully clothed women, on the other hand, with the third-person forms, indicating these women were perceived as in control of their own actions. The females who took the test did not show this effect, Fiske said.

That goes along with the idea that the man looking at a woman in a bikini sees her as the object of action, Fiske said.

Barely There Modesty

This morning Stacy McDonald wrote an excellent piece showing how modesty helps us to properly honour marriage and exhibit Christ-like selflessness. Her article, ‘The New Barely There Modesty raises concerns about the growing defence of bikinis among Christian leaders. Stacy writes,

Modesty isn’t (or shouldn’t be) about legalism, rules, hiding, fear, body shame, or uptight-ism. Since modesty is included in our call to be chaste, it’s about covering our nakedness in public (which the Bible actually does present as shameful), so that we might represent Him honorably before the world. It’s about hallowing His name.

“The nations shall know that I am the Lord,” says the Lord God, “when I am hallowed in you before their eyes.” (Ezekiel 36:23)

It’s about selflessness. It’s about honoring marriage. And beyond that, ladies, it’s about love—loving our brothers and their wives. After all, modesty promotes friendship in women; and, when we remove the awkwardness of sexual immodesty, it promotes a relaxed, comfortable friendship with our brothers as well….

The “barely there modesty” philosophy is not even consistent. How many women would stand around in their “me-oh-mys” in front of an open window where a bunch of construction workers were on lunch break at the house across the street? But these same women will wear the equivalent of their underwear in front of a crowd on the beach or at the pool.

A woman’s naked body is supposed to elicit more than a yawn from a man. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. But, like any of God’s gifts, freely revealing the intimate parts of our bodies to one another is supposed to be enjoyed within the boundaries that God has generously provided—in this case, within the oneness of marriage.

As a loving deer and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love. Proverbs 5:19

Keep your eyes on your own wife. And women, concentrate on satisfying your own husband…privately.

And that goes for guys too. We ladies aren’t immune to lust or distraction, and nakedness goes both ways. But, remember, it’s not always about lust; sometimes it’s simply about dignity. So keep your shirt on! Literally.

I love exposing my nakedness…to my husband. And I love enjoying his nakedness too! Shocked? You shouldn’t be. But you should be shocked if I decide to take it all off at the beach.

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled… (Hebrews 13:4)

It is good and right for a man to be excited by the body of his wife. But, if society manages to desensitize him by making nudity and sexuality common place (perhaps even boring), then the attack on marriage is subtly effective. God intended nudity to stir a reaction in us within marriage; we are wonderfully created to be sensitive to it. As nudity becomes common, and sexuality becomes almost mundane, it robs marriage of what is glorious.

Modesty and the Malliability of the Human Brain

Still, many people are unconvinced. One person left a comment after our earlier post saying,

In my experience, when girls and women are topless on a beach, the atmosphere quickly becomes perfectly relaxed and everyone tends to forget about it and accept it, even adolescent boyfriends. So much so that young women will stand up and casually stray to the nearest road to queue at an icecream van, still topless. I can detect not harm in this.

This is an important question. If we become so used to public nakedness that it becomes relaxed, ordinary and casual, without overtly sensual overtones, then what can be the harm in this? In order to properly answer this question, we must again return to the realm of neuroscience.

Recent discoveries have shown that the human brain is in a constant state of flux, a characteristic that brain scientists call neuro­plasticity. Put simply, the human brain is remarkably adaptable, constantly adjusting itself to the demands of the environment in which it finds itself.

This neurological fluidity is a good thing because, among other things, it enables people to learn new skills, makes it possible for stroke victims to recover some motor functions, and helps blind people compensate for the loss of sight by strengthening parts of the brain associated with the other senses.

But neuroplasticity also has a downside. In his 2007 book The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge shows that certain types of sexual stimuli have the power to reshape how the brain thinks about sex. Because our brains are so adaptable, the dominant assumptions that a collective culture has about sex can exercise a formative influence on the brains of those growing up within that culture, training them to think about sex in a certain way.

How do we see that happening in our own culture? That is a question I addressed in my 2010 blog post ‘Gender, Morality and Modesty Part 5 (the Disenchanting of Sex)’ and then again in my 2011 Salvo article ‘Sex and the Kiddies: The Sexualization of Children & How Advertising & Entertainment Change Their Brains.’ In these articles I explained how the goals of some of the early pioneers of the sexual revolution have been realized in the assumptions that often attach themselves to contemporary swimwear and which actually change how we think about our bodies.

One of these revolutionaries was  Wilhelm Reich (1897–1957), an early pioneer of the sex-education movement. In Reich’s book The Sexual Revolution, he described the means for achieving a society that would not put any obstacles in the path of sexual gratification. Reich was perceptive. He realized that in order to arrive at the sexual utopia he advocated, people would first have to learn to dispense with their natural shyness and embarrassment concerning sexual matters. They would have to lose their reluctance to expose erotically important parts of their bodies. Reich attempted to facilitate this by conducting psychotherapy sessions in which he would require his clients to remove all their clothes.

Reich would be pleased to see an American or European beach today, which is often more in keeping with his ideal than what is found in brothels. In a brothel, the women have had to overcome the natural shyness surrounding erotically important parts of their bodies in order to sell sex. On a sunny beach, women in various states of undress can be seen to have overcome this natural shyness—with no thought of sex at all. By refusing to acknowledge the erotic implications of revealing attire or nudity, they have so nearly achieved Reich’s goal of overcoming shyness. “Profane” may be the best word to describe Reich’s ideal and its realization, given that the term originally meant “to treat as common.”

This understanding of profanity is hard for many to grasp. Unfortunately, I know many people who agree we should be concerned when a woman undresses in public to advertise her sensuality and arouse an erotic response from men, yet the same people believe it is perfectly acceptable for our girls to become so desensitized that they undress in public without any sense of sexual exhibitionism. The reason we should be as concerned for the later as we are the former, is because desensitized girls will be less likely to guard and protect what they have been conditioned to treat as nothing special.

Moreover, when a society treats a naked body as merely common, over long periods of time this cannot help but change the neurocircuitry of our brains so that we actually begin to perceive the body differently. Understood from this perspective, one of the main arguments in favour of the bikini is actually an argument against it. Bikinis are sometimes defended on the grounds that the women who wear them as swimming suits are not trying to be provocative.  While this might be challenged, if it is true it only shows how desexualized women have become if the female body can be almost entirely revealed without the presence of erotic overtones.  We are drifting towards being neuter when the signals of our sexuality are treated as anything less.

Modesty and Sex

One person responded to Stacy McDonald’s article by saying “Since getting married I have been shocked by the number of people who assume that if you believe in modesty in public you must never enjoy the physical side of marriage…“

This is ironic, since the shoe is actually on the other foot. Modesty helps to upgrade the importance of our sexual dignity and to keep sex an exciting and fulfilling experience. As I explained in my article Holy Matrimony: The Unexpected Connection Between Religion & Sexual Fulfillment,’

Some women have told me that modesty is important to them, not only because it helps men not to stumble, but also because it helps them place a high value on their own sexuality. They have told me that modest apparel affirms the true importance of a woman’s sexual identity, since it proclaims that her body is not a tame, benign, and commonplace thing. Modesty affirms that our bodies in general and our sexuality in particular are special, charged, even enchanted, and too exciting to be put merely to common use. As Kathleen van Schaijik suggested in a 1999 article, “If we revere something, we do not hide it. Neither do we flaunt it in public. We cherish it; we pay it homage; we approach it with dignity; we adorn it with beauty; we take care that it is not misused.”

In her book A Return to Modesty, Wendy Shalit argues that modesty is the truly erotic option, since it makes the highest valuation of a woman’s sexual identity, affirming the sacredness of sexuality and displaying a commitment to setting it apart and cherishing it. C. S. Lewis put his finger on the same principle in That Hideous Strength: “when a thing is enclosed, the mind does not willingly regard it as common.” To dress immodestly is ultimately to reduce our sexuality to something commonplace, trivial, and humdrum.

Precisely for this reason, a modest woman significantly upgrades the significance of what is happening when she undresses in front of her husband. As Havelock Ellis observed (stumbling upon the truth for one of the few times in his life), “without modesty we could not have, nor rightly value at its true worth, that bold and pure candor which is at once the final revelation of love and the seal of its sincerity.”

Modesty also upgrades sexuality from the male perspective. The anecdotal evidence clear shows that men whose environment is saturated with immodest women (either because of the company they keep or the images they view) are generally not oversexed, as one might suppose, but just the opposite. In Denmark, where pornography is unrestricted, men are often quoted as saying that sex has become boring.

Cristina Odone observed in The Times that advertisers are finding that sex just does not sell products like it once did. The reason, she suggested, is that the advertisers have made sex so banal that it doesn’t entice us any longer. As one 16-year-old was quoted as saying in 2004, “I’m so used to it, it makes me sick.”

Frequent exposure to nudity tends to trivialize the human body, emptying it of its implicit eroticism. As someone said to me last year, when a man is exposed to too much flesh, it lowers the healthy excitement he should feel when he looks upon the body of his wife because (yawn) he sees that all the time. It therefore takes a higher sexual charge, sometimes to point of extreme perversion, to match the excitement that might otherwise be available in a normal sexual encounter. Could it be that the rise of libido-enhancing drugs is meeting a need created by the libido-squashing effects of pornography?

Who wants the Muslim call to prayer?

The Adhan should be left to the mosque
Channel 4 should not be acting like a mosque

Channel 4’s move to broadcast the Muslim Call to Prayer during Ramadan has met with widespread incredulity.

Anjem Choudary, who is helping restore tranquility in Egypt by calling for the imposition of Shari’a in the troubled country, has welcomed Channel 4’s decision.

But elsewhere, the reaction ranges from the strongly negative to resigned shrugs, given the broadcaster’s track record of shock tactics in the audience ratings war.

Channel 4 will broadcast the Adhan at 3am from the start of Ramadan on 9th July.  They have drawn the line at doing it five times a day.  That will be left to the Channel 4 website.  Wikipedia sums up the Adhan’s purpose like this:

‘The main purpose behind the multiple loud pronouncements of Adhan in every mosque is to make available to everyone an easily intelligible summary of Islamic belief.

‘It is intended to bring to the mind of every believer and non-believer the substance of Islamic beliefs, or its spiritual ideology. In modern times, loudspeakers have been installed on minarets for this purpose.’

In other words, the Adhan is there to drum the tenets of Islam into the ears.  This is because the Adhan sums up the Shahada, the statement of faith: ‘There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’.

The British Constitution holds that there is no God but the Almighty God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is King of kings and Lord of lords.  So every day during this Islamic festival, a terrestrial broadcaster in the UK will be broadcasting what in any other age would have been regarded as treason.

Ralph Lee, Channel 4’s head of factual programming, said: ‘Observing the adhan on Channel 4 will act as a nationwide tannoy system, a deliberate ‘provocation’ to all our viewers in the very real sense of the word.’

Lee added in an article in the Radio Times: ‘Following the horrific events in Woolwich and subsequent reprisals against British Muslims, there has surely never been a more pressing need to give a voice to the moderate mainstream majority.’

But that is not what the Adhan broadcast is doing.  It would be more honest to say:  ‘Following the atrocity in Woolwich, it’s a good time to shove Islam down ordinary people’s throats and whip up anti-Islamic sentiment.’

Muslim commentator Nesrine Malik, writing in the Guardian, said: ‘Apparently, there is an urgent need, post-Woolwich in particular, to show that Islam is a religion of peace and sacrifice. This is an inherently contradictory stance. If there is such a charged atmosphere in the UK vis a vis Islam, why “provoke” people by projecting this message even more loudly?’

There is another spiritual point to make, and it is to do with the power of proclamation, or confession.

Five times a day from mosques all over the world, an imam declares that Allah is the only deity and Mohammed the only true prophet.  We can thank God that loudspeakers have not to date been permitted in Britain, but nevertheless, the Adhan is still being announced.

Would that Christians would proclaim with equal confidence:

‘Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.’

Pro-Marriage student arrested in France

NicolasBA student wearing a tee-shirt with an image supporting traditional male-female marriage has been arrested in France.

Nicolas B. was sporting the logo of ‘La Manif Pour Tous’ (The Demonstration For All) which appears to have been banned under the ‘Loi Taubira’ which legalised same-sex ‘marriage’ and is named after French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira.

The logo consists of a man, a woman and two children holding hands.  One week ago, Nicolas had been held in a police cell for six days.  La Manif Pour Tous protested against his detention last Friday but it is unclear if he has yet been released.

A distinctive feature of La Manif Pour Tous is the number of young people involved in this movement upholding God’s institution of marriage.  This must challenge for the church in Britain.

Meanwhile, according to Tony Atkins, a ‘gay marriage’ fair in Paris was a total flop.  Homosexuals only want to be ‘married’ in order to wreck marriage for heterosexuals, he contends.  Anonymous sex in bushes on Hampstead Heath or Clapham Common is more their line.

In the wake of ‘Loi Taubira’ adverts promising ‘gay friendly’ ‘budget surrogacy’ in India have appeared on Facebook, but Caucasian egg donors are apparently available.

We have already raised concerns that the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill currently being debated in the United Kingdom’s House of Lords will lead to the sort of pro-gay bullying being seen just across the Channel, and that this will impinge on churches and on individuals, especially teachers and school children.

There is some good news.  The Parliament in Croatia has moved towards enshrining traditional marriage in the country’s constitution, following demands for a referendum on the subject by voters concerned about liberal sex education and the new law in France.  Hungary did the same recently and Romania is set to follow suit.

There was never a better time to stand up for the Gospel – or to make sure your passport is up-to-date.

How the West is Helping to Destroy Christianity in Syria

Syrian Christianity goes back to the earliest days of the Christian faith, with language, traditions and practices that have remained largely unchanged since the time of Christ. Despite popular misconceptions, the nation of Syria is not an Islamic state. The Christian population living in Syria has enjoyed a measure of stability under the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad. This tenuous stability is now being undermined by Islamic rebels who, supported by Western powers, are attempting to overthrow the government and destroy the native Christian population.

Christianity in Syria

Not long after Christ’s ascension, the church at Jerusalem was scattered following Stephen’s martyrdom (Acts 11:19). Many Christians fled to Antioch in modern day Turkey, where Barnabas was later sent to check on the church (Acts 11:22-27). Barnabas found that the gospel had taken deep root in Antioch, as evidenced by the fact that it was here that the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11:26). The city of Antioch became a thriving centre of Mediterranean Christianity and one of the five major Apostolic sees (the others being Jerusalem, Constantinople, Rome and Alexandria).

As a centre of apostolic Christianity, the Antiochian church sent missionaries throughout all of Asia Minor. It was from these missionaries that the gospel was reinforced in Syria. Partly because of this, the largest grouping Christians living in Syria call themselves Antiochian (the official title of their church is the ‘Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch’).

Christianity flourished so much in Syria that when the Ottomans invaded Antioch in the 14th century, the Antiochian church moved its headquarters from Antioch to Damascus in Syria. Damascus was also a stronghold of ancient Christianity since the earliest days. In fact, it was because the church at Damascus was thriving that Saul, later the Apostle Paul, decided to travel there to persecute the Christians of the city, prior to his miraculous conversion experience on the Damascus road.

The Damascus-based Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch (or the ‘Antiochian Orthodox church’ for short) has one million members in Syria, with worship and practice that has remained relatively unchanged since the early days of the Apostle’s successors. An interesting testament to this is the fact that it is only among Christian communities in Syria that Aramaic, the language in which Jesus spoke, still survives as a living tongue.

More recently, missionaries and immigrants from the Middle East have spread the traditions and practices of the Antiochian church throughout the world, giving millions of Christians a chance to connect with some of the oldest Christian prayers and practices. The church in Syria is thus responsible for 2 million Christians worldwide, including many in America. (My own family attends the Damascus-based Antiochian Orthodox Church, which was planted in our village by a missionary priest.)

Syria also has a strong presence of Christians from other traditions, including the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, the Oriental Syriac Orthodox Church, the Assyrian church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church and a minority of various Protestant groups.

Back in the 1920s Christians made up as much as 30% of Syria’s population, but throughout the 20th century they were subject to fierce persecution. The Christian population in Syria now amounts to about 10% of the total population.

The church in Syria came to enjoy relative stability under the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad’s family, who have ruled Syria since 1971. al-Assad has never insisted that Islam be the nation’s state religion, although the constitution requires the President to be a Muslim. For many years Syria has been looked upon as a safe haven for Christians, and thousands of Iraqi Christians recently fled to Syria to escape the persecution in their homeland in the wake of Western intervention.

Recent Challenges

The equilibrium in Syria began to be disrupted after the, so called, ‘Arab Spring’ hit the country in 2011. Rebel groups, many of whom have links to Al-Qaeda, began seeking to overthrow the government. Syria’s Christian population became engulfed in the crossfire of this civil war. Because most Christians in Syria have remained neutral in the two-year civil war and some have supported the government, the insurgents with the ‘Free Syrian Army’ perceive Christians as enemies. Consequently, they have begun systematically confiscating land belonging to Christians, in addition raping women and killing children. Dozens of churches have also been desecrated or completely destroyed, mainly around Homs and Aleppo.

Astoundingly, the anti-government ‘Free Syrian Army’ is considered moderate by the West and is supported by the David Cameron, the Obama administration, NATO and the EU.

In March the New York Times reported that the America’s Central Intelligence Agency had expanded an airlift of arms and equipment to insurgent militants that had been occurring since early 2012, totalling around 3,500 tons of military equipment in total. This coincided with a series of rebel victories. America has kept up the momentum, and last month Ben Rhodes, U.S. deputy national security adviser, revealed that America was stepping up the assistance it was giving to rebel groups, hoping to finally tip the balance to help the insurgents overthrow al-Assad’s government. The announcement coincided with the emergence of new lethal weapons in the hands of rebel forces.

If the rebels do succeed in overthrowing the government, the worst case scenario could be a repeat of what happened in Yugoslavia during the late 90s, after Western troops supported Islamic Albanian rebel groups seeking to overthrow the government. Once the Muslim rebel groups had successfully separated from the lawful Yugoslavian government based on Serbia, they formed the, so called, Republic of Kosovo. Christians living in Kosovo were then targeted for destruction and sacred monasteries that were hundreds of years old were levelled to the ground.

This pattern is being repeated in Syria as Muslim rebel groups seek both to overthrow the lawful government as well as to eliminate the native Christian population. Consequently, Christians in Syria are frightened to worship publicly and many have had to flee to refugee camps in neighbouring countries

‘Disproportionate Violence and abuse’

A special ‘Vulnerability Assessment’ report conducted by the World Watch unit of Open Doors International from June 2013 warned that Syrian Christians are the victims of “disproportionate violence and abuse.” They warned further that Christian women in Syria are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse.

There is a sad irony here. The intervention of American and Britain in Iraq resulted in a hard-line Islamic takeover and the eviction or extermination of the native Christians living in Iraq. Many Iraqi Christians died, while countless others fled to Syria where they thought they would be safe. And now Western powers are seeking to empower the very forces that are persecuting the Christian population in Syria.

Metropolitan Hilarion, the chairman of the Department of External Church Relations of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow, lamented that “in those places where the authorities are replaced by the rebel groups, Christianity is being exterminated to the last man: Christians are expelled, or physically destroyed.

He recalled that “Syria has taken more than two million Iraqi refugees, thousands of whom are Christians.” But now the Metroplitain says “thousands of militant extremists under the guise of opposition forces unleashed a civil war in this country. Extremist groups armed and trained by means of foreign powers are deliberately killing Christians.”

Rebel Groups Kidnap Archbishop

The situation in Syria reached crisis proportions last April when insurgents groups kidnapped two Archbishops who were on their way back to Aleppo after accomplishing a humanitarian mission. The two church leaders (Yohanna Ibrahim, archbishop of the Syriac Orthodox church and Paul Yazigi, Metropolitan of the Antiochian Orthodox church) had been traveling outside the besieged northern city of Aleppo in an effort to provide aid and comfort to war-torn regions and to negotiate the release of two priests. Their driver, a church deacon, was shot dead and the two archbishops were abducted at gunpoint. As of writing this article, the whereabouts and condition of the clerics remain unknown.

Unfortunately, this high-profile kidnapping is only the tip of the iceberg. Writing in The Huffington Post this April, Hieromonk Peter Preble observed that “Since the war began in March of 2011, more than 70,000 people have died. A February estimate places the internally displaced at 3.6 million, and an additional 1.3 million have been forced to flee Syria for neighboring countries as refugees, all the while the government of the United States continues to support the very people responsible for the killing.”

Rebels target monasteries

Ancient Christian monasteries are being regularly plundered in Syria by anti-government forces. In May of this year, rebels attacked the 1500-year-old monastery of the Prophet Elijah near the city of Al-Qusayr. They stole the sacramental vessels, destroyed the altar and the baptismal font, blew up the bell tower, and knocked down the sacred statue of Elijah.

On June 23, a Syrian Catholic priest was murdered in a monastery in Gassanieh, Idlib. François Murad, 49, was a member of the Franciscans and lived a life of prayer at the monastery. Gunmen entered the monastery, plundered it, burned the building and executed Murad. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the head of all Franciscans in the Holy Land, told the Vatican News Agency that “The world must know that the support of gunmen by the west is helping extremists in killing Syrians.”

Christian Villages Completely Destroyed

On 27 May this year, the ‘Free Syrian Army’ raided the Christian-populated village of al-Duvair in Syria’s Western province of Homs. Arriving in the village they proceeded to massacre all its civilian residents, including women and children. The army of the Syrian government intervened to protect the Christians, but only after most of the population had been slaughtered.

On 11 June, a massacre was reported in the town of Hatlah, close to Deir el-Zour city. An organisation of armed militants converged on the town to ‘cleanse’ it. At least 60 people were slaughtered.

In other Christian villages, rebels have suddenly appeared and declared, “Flee or be killed.” With nowhere to go and little hope of finding employment, thousands of Christian families face little prospect of a hopeful future. Many have fled to refugee camps, though conditions there are little better since they make “soft targets” for criminals and Islamic thugs.

London Mayor Warns of ‘ a terrifying Islamic state’

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, warned that Cameron is supporting ‘hate-filled thugs.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, issued a stinging rebuke to David Cameron’s naïve support of Syrian rebels. He warned that as Britain supplies rebels with weaponry, they will have no means of preventing those weapons ending up in the hands of “al Qaida-affliated thugs” associated with government opposition. As an example of the radical Islam of the rebels, Mr Johnson described an incident in Aleppo where a 15-year-old boy was taken away and beaten and then summarily executed by Islamist rebels for making a joking reference to the Prophet Mohammed.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Mr Johnson joined other prominent spokespeople, including the Archbishop of York, in warning the British Government not to meddle in the Syrian crisis.

“Odious, twisted, hate-filled thugs; arrogant and inadequate creeps, intoxicated by the pathetic illusion of power that comes with guns; poisoned by a perversion of religion into a contempt for all norms of civilised behaviour,” the London Mayor wrote.

He continued “They are fighting not for freedom but for a terrifying Islamic state in which they would have the whip hand – and yet there is no dodging or fudging the matter: these are among the Syrian rebels who are hoping now to benefit from the flow of Western arms.

“How is it supposed to work? How are we meant to furnish machine guns and anti-tank weapons to one set of opposition forces, without them ending up in the hands of men like the al Qaida-affiliated thugs who executed a child for telling a joke?

“This is not the moment to send more arms. This is the moment for a total ceasefire, an end to the madness.

“We can’t use Syria as an arena for geopolitical point-scoring or muscle-flexing, and we won’t get a ceasefire by pressing weapons into the hands of maniacs.”

Boris Johnson is not alone. Tory backbencher Julian Lewis said that Britain’s involvement could be “suicidal” leading to extremist elements among the rebels gaining control of the regime’s arsenal of chemical weapons.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has also warned that arming the rebels is “very, very naïve.”

Supporting the Wrong Side

A problem with American and Britain involving itself in Syria’s conflict, apart from the fact that it is none of their business, is the simple fact the Western powers have chosen to support the wrong side. No one is claiming that al-Assad’s authoritarian government has been godly; however, the prospect of what might emerge if his government is overthrown is almost unthinkable. Yonadam Kanna, a member of the Iraqi National Assembly and Secretary General for the Assyrian Democratic Movement warned that the collapse of the Syrian state would be a jihadist triumph and endanger Christians throughout the entire Middle East. We must pray that this does not happen and that the Lord would grant special protection to Christians living in Syria. We must also pray for those Syrian Christians who have had to flee to refugee camps in Turkey and Lebanon.

Even those Syrian Christians who have not had to flee are suffering acutely from the conditions of the civil war. There is a shortage of basic supplies, including gas, electricity, food and many basic supermarket products. Moreover, dangerous criminals are always too ready to take advantage of the chaos and plunder the houses and shops of innocent people.

The UK and its allies would be able to send arms to Syrian opposition groups straightaway if they felt such a move was justified, William Hague has said.

An existing EU embargo was lifted on Monday.  MPs from all parties have warned about weapons falling into extremists’ hands.

William Hague lobbied European leaders to lift the embargo.

Sending arms to be sent to the Syrian rebels will mean systematic persecution of Syria’s 10% Christian minority, who had relative safety under President Assad’s Alawite regime..

It will also mean weapons falling into the hands of Muslim extremists attached to Al-Qaeda.

Finally, it will mean equipping enemies of Israel who make President Assad look like a Zionist in comparison.

Mr Hague knows all this, so why is he so intent on arming the rebels?

Christians are already under attack.  The Fars News Agency from Iran reports (27th May 2013):

The armed rebels affiliated to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) raided the Christian-populated al-Duvair village in Reef (outskirts of) Homs near the border with Lebanon today and massacred all its civilian residents, including women and children.

The Syrian army, however, intervened and killed tens of terrorists during heavy clashes which are still going on in al-Duvair village.

The armed rebels’ attack and crimes in al-Duvair village came after they sustained heavy defeats in al-Qusseir city which has almost been set free by the Syrian army except for a few districts.

Truth is often hard to come by in that part of the world (it isn’t that easy here) but we have reported before on attacks by Syrian rebels on Christians.

All across the Middle East, in countries affected by the ‘Arab Spring’, Christians are coming under persecution.  Our Government’s intervention in Iraq resulted in a hard-line Islamic takeover  and the eviction or extermination of Christians, yet the Foreign Secretary is intent on ploughing the same furrow in Syria.  The question must be asked: Does William Hague hate Christians?

The High Court has ordered a Muslim sect to stop using a redundant chemical works in West Ham as a mosque. Meanwhile, Christians prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation with a prayer meeting on a path overlooking the site.

Newham Council were granted an injunction last Friday (24th May 2013) ordering the Anjuman-E-Islahul-Mislimeen Trust, which uses old industrial buildings on the Riverine Centre or Abbey Mills site, to clear the land of temporary buildings and cease religious activities there.

The action was brought after the mosque trustees, from the purist Tablighi Jamaat sect, breached an undertaking given to Newham to submit a planning application in line with Council policy.

In another twist, the Trustees have until Wednesday 8th June 2013 to appeal against the Council’s refusal of the planning application they did eventually submit.

The Mosque was to have been the size of Battersea Power Station, dominating the Abbey Mills area, according to the architect submitting the proposal.  It would have accomodated 12,000 devotees, becoming by a factor of four the largest place of worship in Britain, as well as the headquarters of Tablighi Jamaat.

Local Councillors refused the application last December, reported the London Evening Standard.

The hardline Islamic group announced their intention to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate at Bristol, according to the Standard’s later report, but having sacked their third and latest firm of architects shortly after the refusal, it is far from certain they will be able to offer a coherent appeal, if they manage one at all.

Christian Voice members have been meeting for prayer at the site of the proposed development on the first Saturday morning of every month since January 2007.  The next meeting is Saturday 1st June 2013, the day before the 60th anniversary of the Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘We give thanks to God that Newham Council are determined to see the back of a group described by American security officials as a “recruiting ground for Al Qaeda” and by French intelligence as an “antechamber of fundamentalism.”

‘We give thanks also for her Majesty’s Coronation, for the Christian symbolism within it and for our rich Christian heritage.

‘The battle of the ‘megamosque’ is not over yet and the focus of our prayer must now shift to Bristol and the appeals process.

‘As to the state of our nation, we shall be praying for their Lordships to show wisdom from on high as they debate and vote on the Government’s ‘gay marriage’ proposals on Monday 3rd June.

‘With so much going on, it will be a privilege to gather together and seek the Lord on Saturday.’

 

COME ALONG to the next prayer meeting at West Ham: Saturday 1st June 2013 (and every first Saturday in the month thereafter) from 103.0am to 12.30 pm.  Meet at the site where the Greenway pedestrian path crosses Canning Road.  Aim for Channel Sea House at E15 3ND (Streetmap.co.uk).

If coming by rail, take the DLR from Stratford or West Ham to Abbey Road.  Turn right out of the station, and left up Canning Road.  We meet at the top on the left on the Greenway.  This weekend, the Hammersmith and City Line has engineering works, and there is no Circle Line or Metropolitan Line either between Kings Cross and Moorgate.  Use the District Line, Jubilee Line or Mainline from Fenchurch Street.

Check at Transport for London for ‘planned engineering works’ to the Tube.

If coming by car, turn into Mitre Road which becomes Abbey Road, turn left into Canning Road, park at Channel Sea House at the end and just walk 50 yards back to the Greenway.  You can also approach from the other direction: From the A118 High Street turn into Abbey Road.  SatNav: E15 3ND.

PLEASE COME and stand up for Christ whatever the weather and be challenged and blessed!  (Phil 1:27-29).  The meeting is always a wonderful and peaceful time of fellowship, worship and seeking the Lord in prayer and in His word.

PRAY: That there is a good turn-out with powerful prayer for our nation.  Pray that God will bless our nation with repentance and that His enemies, whether Secularist or Islamic, will be converted to the cause of Christ, or that their plans will come to nothing before our holy and awesome God.  Who is on the Lord’s side?  Come along and stand with us!

Postscript: Muslims view Jesus Christ as a mere prophet, superceded by Mohammed.  Christians believe that Jesus was and is the Son of God. Allah denies having begotten a son, so clearly Allah and the Almighty are not the same being.

Thousand support Anglo-French rally

A rally organised by French ex-patriates brought more than one thousand French and British supporters of marriage into Trafalgar Square on a chilly Sunday afternoon yesterday.

The rally was timed to co-incide with a massive pro-marriage ‘manifestation’ in Paris.  The Paris event was the second of his kind, the London protest the first.

Christian politician Alan Craig was invited to give a speech and accused the French President and the British Prime Minister of not listening to the people.

‘Mr Cameron likes to export democracy around the world,’ he said, ‘often with bombs and bullets’, yet he will not listen to people in his own back yard.’

A group of around 100 pro-sodomy counter-demonstrators sported rainbow flags and chanted ‘Shame on you’.  They were largely ignored by the good-natured pro-marriage supporters.

A fair-sized selection of posters, flags, banners and some chanted slogans, emphasised what the protestors saw as a radical departure from the natural order in redefining marriage to include homoxsexuals.

One poster pointed out – in French and English – that we are all born from a man and a woman.

Damien Montgieux, of organising group ‘La Manif pour tous’ (‘demonstration for all’) told Christian Voice that he was happy the event had gone off peacefully.

Mr Montgieux was pleased that so many took time on their day of rest to come to London on a bitterly cold day but he observed that in Paris, on the same afternoon, 100’s of thousands marched to the Arc de Triomphe.  There was an age difference between Paris and London as well.

‘In Trafalgar Square, the average person was middle-aged’, he told us, ‘But in France the protestors are much younger.  The youth come out to stand up for ‘le mariage’.  It is cool to do so.

‘I am very hopeful that in France homosexual marriage will be defeated,’ he concluded, ‘I should like to be as sure about Britain.’

Queen not ‘fighting for gay rights’

Despite a typical bit of sensationalism in the Mail on Sunday, Her Majesty the Queen will not sign a Commonwealth gay rights charter at Marlborough House tonight.

The new Commonwealth Charter declares: “We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.”

The Charter is only ‘designed to stamp out discrimination against homosexual people and promote the “empowerment” of women’ in the minds of a few libertarians in Britain and Australia and an editor at Northcliffe House with an eye on the market.

If the Charter had said explicitly ‘grounds of sexuality’ instead of ‘other grounds’ it would have been a gay rights measure, but the Commonwealth is not Westminster,  or Canberra.  A majority of nations still retain elements of historical Biblical morality and a charter with a reference to ‘sexuality’ would never have been agreed by all Commonwealth heads of government in December..

As the Mail says: “The ‘other grounds’ is intended to refer to sexuality – but specific reference to ‘gays and lesbians’ was omitted in deference to Commonwealth countries with draconian anti-gay laws.”

Exactly.  Except it was only ‘intended’ that way by some of those who stitched the wording together.  For others, in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, there is not the slightest thought that ‘gay rights’ is a new Commonwealth ideal.

The Sunday Telegraph observed that ‘forty-one of the Commonwealth’s 54 nations retain legislation against homosexual acts. In parts of Nigeria and Pakistan those found to have taken part in gay sex can receive the death penalty, in Trinidad and Tobago it can incur 25 years in jail and life imprisonment in Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Bangladesh and Guyana.’

Ben Summerskill, the chief executive of the gay and lesbian rights group Stonewall, described the Monarch, for some reason, as a “feminist icon” and said: “This is the first time that the Queen has publicly acknowledged the importance of the six per cent of her subjects who are gay.”

(The actual evidence shows the latter figure to be around 1.5% in the West and nearer to 0% in Africa and Asia.)

For another more balanced view, here is the view of Tim Marshall, Foreign Affairs Editor at Sky News:

‘In her speech the Queen will say: “Our shared values… which are found in our new Commonwealth Charter – mean that we place special emphasis on including everyone in this goal, especially those who are vulnerable.”

‘She may say that, but the charter does not.’

French initiate pro-marriage witness

A planned witness to support marriage on Palm Sunday from 2pm to 5pm has been initiated by a group of French ex-patriates, Christian Voice has learned.

Christian UK-based campaigning groups have been slow to organise anything, so the French, flushed with the success of the ‘manifestation’ in Paris in January, have decided to organise a demonstration in Trafalgar Square on Palm Sunday, Sunday 24th March, 2013.

What is little known is that this will be their second pro-marriage London witness.  Canon Chris Sugden of Anglican Mainstream explains:

‘You may remember that in January around a million people – including many thousands of students and young people – demonstrated on the streets of Paris against their government’s proposals to redefine traditional marriage to include same sex couples. Hundreds of the demonstrators were UK-based French residents who boarded the Eurostar to Paris to join their compatriots.

‘What is less well known is that on the same day a further 600 French residents refrained from travelling to Paris but demonstrated instead outside the French Embassy in west London.

‘The UK-based protesters have invited other non-French UK residents to join them in Trafalgar Square, and to make this a joint protest against both the UK and the French governments’ plans to redefine marriage.

‘We think this is a great idea and, along with those from other UK organisations, Anglican Mainstream fully supports it and plans to be there.”

Family Breakdown Revealed in Shocking New Statistics

The rise in family breakdown has now reached unprecedented levels, according to a recent study.

The 2011 General Lifestyle Survey Overview from the Office for National Statistics shows that by 2011 the number of single parent households reached 22%, as opposed to only 8% in 1971. Two-parent families have fallen from 92% at the beginning of the 1970s to a shocking 78%.

The survey noted other trends that were summarized by a report in the Express earlier today.

“The popularity of marriage has fallen as the proportion of single women aged 18 to 49 who have never married has doubled, up from just 18 per cent in 1979 to 43 per cent in 2011. The proportion of women of the same age who live with a partner, but are not married, has tripled from just 11 per cent to 34 per cent…

“Britain has become a lonelier place to live over the last 40 years with the number of people living alone almost doubling from nine per cent in 1973 to 16 per cent by 2011.”

“People aged 25-44 were five times more likely to be living alone in 2011 (10 per cent) than they were in 1973 (two per cent).”

The paper went on to quote Stephen Green, the National Director of Christian Voice, who commented on the social effect of family breakdown:

“Marriage is the best foundation on which to raise children, with all the evidence proving that time and time again.

“Successive governments have failed to support marriage as an institution, with the current Conservative-led Coalition ignoring promises of tax breaks while spending the time promoting gay marriage.

“The cost to our society and local communities is high – the children of unmarried parents do not do as well at school, are more likely to have health problems and grow up in poverty.”

Mr Green was not the only person who warned that this trend will be accelerated if Government’s plans to introduce same-sex ‘marriage’ are pushed through. In a paper presented at the Committee Stage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, Dr Patricia Morgan told Parliament that same-sex ‘marriage’ will reinforce the notion that marriage is irrelevant to parenthood.

“From what we know about demographic trends,” she declared in the 22-page paper, “it is preposterous to argue that people suddenly somehow embrace marriage and slow or reverse its decline because homosexuals can have it,” Dr Morgan said.

She continued:

“We can be certain that same sex marriage will do no such thing as encourage stable marriage whether for heterosexuals and/or homosexuals. Marriage in Scandinavia, Spain, Netherlands and elsewhere is in deep decline.”

“Same sex marriage is both an effect and a cause of the evisceration of marriage – especially the separation between this and parenthood.”

“If marriage is only about couple relationships, and is not intrinsically connected to parenthood, why not give the leavings to homosexuals?”

“As marriage is redefined to accommodate same-sex couples, this reinforces the irrelevance of marriage to parenthood.”

“Elsewhere, same sex marriage is an instigator for the casualisation of heterosexual unions and separation of marriage and parenthood.”

“Same sex marriage is more a terminus for marriage or ultimate act of dissolution, rather than a force for revival.”

Did Jesus Christ have gay friends?

In many churches, tolerance has become an idol. I have heard numerous times Christians happily say that they have “gay friends,” as though it were a badge of honor. I have no problem with sharing the Gospel with homosexuals, but why should we make it a major goal for Christians to have gay friends?

Would Christ have gay friends? “Yes, since he spent time with tax collectors and prostitutes,” would be the answer of many modern Christians. But while this is true, this does not prove that Christ would have gay friends. A tax collector and prostitute are not homosexuals.

In Genesis Abraham is visited by three figures, one of whom he refers to as “My Lord” (Genesis 18:3), and who Scripture calls “the LORD” (Genesis 18:17). This person was then God in the flesh, and thus Jesus Christ.

After much feasting, Christ and the other two men leave Abraham to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah:

And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. (Genesis 18:21-22)

The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was homosexual deviancy (19:4-10). Christ therefore, destroyed a city for ‘gay’ behavior. Christ believed in the Law which Moses, being divinely inspired, wrote against homosexuality:

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)

He would also have subscribed to the Mosaic law which forbade men from wearing women’s clothing and vice versa:

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God. (Deuteronomy 22:5)

So would Christ have gay friends? No. But do you know who would? Muhammad. Muhammad, contrary to Scripture, in fact wore the clothes of his child-bride Aisha as a ritual to receive revelation from Allah.

In the Sahih Collection of al-Bukhari, Hadith Number 2442,
Chapter 52,
 Muhammad says:

The revelation does not come to me when I am in the garment of any woman except ‘A’isha.

In Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Number 3941, the same impostor states:

Do not hurt me with Aisha; for by Allah, the inspiration did not descent on me while I was in the coverings (lihaf) of any of you (women) except Aisha.”

In the Sahih collection of Imam Muslim, Hadith Number 4472, one Zaynab Bint Jahsh requests a visit to see Muhammad

while he was with Aisha in (fee) her robe (Mirt) and in the same state that Fatimah found him in.”

As we write in our book, For God or For Tyranny, the Quran itself promises boy loving for jihadists in paradise.

The followers of Muhammad consisted of mukhannathun, or cross dressers. It is the same word as mukhannatah, which in Arabic means homosexual.

Daayiee Abdullah, an openly gay imam, describes the mukhannathun as

sort of a male-female, cross-dressing types. They existed. And they also lived or worked in the household of the Prophet. Aisha, one of the Prophet’s wives, indicated that there were men who worked in the household. They were mukhannathun. That generally meant that they were not necessarily castrated, but not having an interest in women.

Muhammad not only was a cross-dresser, but he had gay friends. So the next time you hear a modern Christian laud himself for having gay friends and criticize the church for prohibiting homosexuality, let him know that Jesus wouldn’t have gay friends, but Muhammad did.

I assembled these resources after speaking first-hand with those who had been involved helping North Koreans to escape.

Also, see the news story published yesterday about photographs of North Korea’s concentration camps that were generated using Google Earth. The report tells how “As many as 250,000 political prisoners and their families toil on starvation rations in the mostly remote mountain camps”, but what it does not mention is that many of these families are Christians who have been taken to these starvation camps as a punishment for believing in Jesus.

To get an idea of what goes on in these camps, read my book review of Kang Chol-Hwan’s chilling exposé of the system after his own imprisonment of ten years. The treatments that Christians and other political prisoners are subjected to at these camps include such things as:

  • making prisoners watch other prisoners being executed and then forcing them to throw stones at the corpses
    working prisoners to death through hard labour
  • forcing prisoners to live in permanent situations of deliberately contrived semi-starvation
  • placing prisoners in a 1.5-metre-square (24 square feet) punishment cell for a week or more, where they are unable to sit up or lie down
  • forcing prisoners to remain for long periods in the cold
  • raping women with tools until they are dead
  • routine infanticide and forced abortions, including stamping on the necks of babies until they die
  • water torture
  • motionless-kneeling for long periods (detainees who move while they are supposed to be kneeling motionless are handcuffed from the upper bars of their cells with their feet suspended off the floor)
  • beating prisoners to death
  • sleep deprivation
  • cutting off women’s breasts
  • forcing detainees to beat each other
  • breaking fingers

At this point, there isn’t much we can do other than pray for God to bring a miracle of deliverance to this country, which is a relic of the Cold War era. The other thing we can do is to educate ourselves. I am constantly meeting Christians who have no idea that their fellow brothers and sisters are suffering in Nazi-style concentration camps because the media, fixated on the Middle East, all but completely ignores the problem.

Suicides rise in 2011 as BBC3 makes fun

Suicide rates among middle-aged men and young women in Britain increased to their highest level in almost a decade during 2011, according to newly released figures.

There has been a ‘significant’ rise in the overall number of people who have taken their own life in the United Kingdom over the past 12 months, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said yesterday.

A teenager from Abbots Langley is the latest teenager to be driven to suicide by bullying. Jessica Cobb, 15, was bullied ‘for being pretty’.  Girls in their teens and twenties are the group with the biggest rise in the suicide rate over the past six years.

BBC3 is set to screen a comedy about assisted suicide this month. For those who have lost loved ones, suicide is anything but funny.  Christian Voice is among those pleading with BBC3 controller Zai Bennett, to drop the show.  Alarm has also been raised about websites promoting suicide viewed by young people.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘The rise in suicide amongst two groups in particular – middle-aged men and young women – should be of great concern.  There is a growing culture of suicide becoming acceptable in Britain today.  Websites encouraging young people to take their own lives should be shut down, and as for the BBC3 comedy ‘Way to go’, the word ‘irresponsible’ hardly conveys the enormity of what they are adding to the cultural mix. 

‘At a time when every country of the UK has a scheme trying to reduce suicide, for our national broadcaster to make light of it is a total abuse of their privileged position.  I am not sure what can be done about the pro-suicide websites, but BBC3’s Controller, Zai Bennett, could and should scrap ‘Way to go’ especially in the light of these newly-released figures.’

Key points from the ONS statistics

* In 2011 there were 6,045 suicides in people aged 15 and over in the UK, an increase of 437 compared with 2010.

* The UK suicide rate increased significantly between 2010 and 2011, from 11.1 to 11.8 deaths per 100,000 population.

* There were 4,552 male suicides in 2011 (a rate of 18.2 suicides per 100,000 population) and 1,493 female suicides (5.6 per 100,000 population).

* The highest suicide rate was in males aged 30 to 44 (23.5 deaths per 100,000 population in 2011).

* The suicide rate in males aged 45 to 59 increased significantly between 2007 and 2011 (22.2 deaths per 100,000 population in 2011).

* The overall male suicide rate is the highest since 2002.

* From an all-time low of 5.0 suicides per 100,000 population in 2007, female suicides have tended to increase and the suicide rate of 5.6 deaths per 100,000 population in 2011 was significantly higher.

* Female suicide rates were highest in 45 to 59-year-olds in 2011 (7.3 deaths per 100,000 population).

* Females aged 15 to 29 had the lowest suicide rates of any age group. However, the rate in this age group has increased significantly from a record low of 2.9 deaths per 100,000 in 2007 to 4.2 deaths per 100,000 in 2011.

Suicide prevention programmes accross the United Kingdom

In September 2012 the Department of Health launched ‘Preventing Suicide in England: a cross-government outcomes strategy to save lives’.

Following a public consultation in 2009, the Welsh Assembly Government published ‘Talk to Me: The National Action Plan to Reduce Suicide and Self Harm in Wales, 2009-2014’.

In Scotland, a 10-year ‘Choose Life’ suicide prevention strategy and action plan was launched in 2002 with the overarching aim to reduce suicide in Scotland by 20% by 2013 (Scottish Executive, 2002).

In 2006, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland (DHSSPS) published ‘Protect Life: A Shared Vision – The Northern Ireland Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan, 2006-2011’. The strategy includes two targets:

i. to obtain a 10% reduction in the overall suicide rate by 2008

ii. to reduce the overall suicide rate by a further 5% by 2011
