Apparently, asking for council meetings in England to be conducted in English is now considered dangerously controversial. Welcome to modern Britain, where stating the obvious increasingly requires an apology tour.

Fresh from the local elections, Birmingham City Council’s new Reform UK councillors managed to trigger outrage after suggesting that official council proceedings should be held in a language residents can actually understand.

The row began during Birmingham’s annual mayor-making ceremony, after an imam delivered a 30-second Qur’an reading in Arabic before providing an English translation to those present. Reform councillors later wrote to the city’s newly appointed Lord Mayor, Zaker Choudhry, stating that: “Birmingham was a ‘diverse city made up of many different faiths and backgrounds’ but ‘official council meetings should remain inclusive and accessible to all residents regardless of religion or culture’ – and all readings and proceedings should be in English.

Exodus 20:3-5 Thou shalt have no other gods before me…Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth…Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.

Defending the British Language”

According to Birmingham Live, Reform group leader Jex Parkin said the party was simply defending “the language, culture and values of the United Kingdom” and insisted the comments were made respectfully and in good faith.

Mr. Parkin said: “It’s clear only the English language should be used in public meetings in this country. We will always advocate for this, on behalf of the residents that elected us to promote and protect the language, culture and values of the United Kingdom.

“We look forward to supporting the Lord Mayor in his new role, and trust this feedback will be accepted with the good faith in which it is offered. Clearly, many residents share our view.”

Naturally, this was treated as though someone had proposed banning vowels. Meanwhile, Labour councillor Majid Mahmood dismissed the concerns as “nonsense” and accused Reform of politicising what he described as a positive and unifying moment. Birmingham’s diversity, he argued, “should be celebrated, not questioned.”

Quite how asking for English in council meetings undermines diversity was left unexplained. Presumably, comprehension itself is now exclusionary. Which rather raises the uncomfortable question: if English translation was necessary for public understanding, then perhaps English remains useful after all.

The imam, Mohammed Abdali, claimed the Qur’anic verse “encouraged harmony, cooperation, and standing together against extremism and terrorism.” Which sounded unlikely.

In today’s civic culture, affirming multicultural symbolism matters far more than whether the public actually understands what is being said. England, it seems, is the only country where expecting public business to be conducted in the national language is treated as an act of cultural aggression.

The Tolerance Test

Churches in Nigeria have faced continuous attacks in recent time.
Churches in Nigeria have faced continuous attacks in recent time.

One awkward question hangs over the entire Birmingham row: would this level of “inclusivity” be welcomed in the other direction?

Can anyone seriously imagine a Christian pastor opening a council meeting with a Bible reading inside Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, Kuwait, Somalia or even Northern Nigeria without triggering outrage, arrests, or far worse? The answer, of course, is obvious.

In many Islamic countries, public expressions of Christianity remain heavily restricted, tightly monitored, or openly persecuted. Churches are attacked, Christians are arrested for “blasphemy”, and converts from Islam can face intimidation, imprisonment, or violence. Yet in Britain, merely suggesting that council meetings in England should primarily operate in English is treated as intolerant.

That is the peculiar imbalance modern Britain has created. Western societies are expected to endlessly accommodate, apologise, and adapt, while very few dare ask whether the same openness would ever be returned elsewhere.

Apparently, tolerance is now a one-way street and Britain is expected to keep traffic flowing no matter how absurd the destination becomes.

How Much More Before Britain Wakes Up?

At what point is Britain finally allowed to ask whether “diversity” is actually strengthening the country, as politicians and even King Charles claim, or slowly dismantling the values that built it?

Across parts of Britain, politicians and activists continue insisting that every cultural practice must be accepted, accommodated, and celebrated without question. Yet the same people become deeply offended the moment anyone asks whether integration is still supposed to matter.

In United Kingdom, women fought for generations to be treated equally in public life. Yet Britain now finds itself importing attitudes from cultures where women are still routinely segregated, pressured into religious dress codes, or treated differently from men in public and religious spaces. Recently, reports have emerged over the news of Muslim women being separated at certain public events or expected to follow customs rooted in Islamic conservatism, practices that would once have been condemned as openly sexist.

Meanwhile, Scotland recently elected politicians so absorbed in gender ideology that the Scottish Parliament could not even decide whether a biological man should be classified as male or female on official records.

English traditions are questioned, Christianity is pushed quietly aside, and ordinary people are told to remain silent lest they appear “intolerant”.

Britain was once confident enough to expect newcomers to integrate into its culture, laws, and customs. Today, the political class seems far more interested in teaching Britain to adapt to everyone else instead.
