As we approach Remembrance Day, a day meant to honour the sacrifice of countless brave veterans who defended freedom, it seems the Royal British Legion has found a new angle for ‘support’ by endorsing a political symbol. For a mere eight pounds, you can now show both your support for veterans and your allegiance to ‘trans’ ideology with a Progress Pride Poppy Pin.

This isn’t just any poppy. It’s a symbol that, far from honouring history, has become tied to a highly charged agenda. The Progress Pride flag is associated with men competing in women’s sports, adolescents undergoing irreversible surgeries due to trans ideology, and doctors sidelining centuries-old ethical principles, all under the guise of ‘progress.’

Instead of commemorating those who gave their lives for our freedoms, this poppy distracts from Remembrance Day’s solemnity, blending in an agenda that has nothing to do with honouring veterans and everything to do with promoting a narrow political stance.

The Bible says,
Luke 5:31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

‘Identity politics’

According to the Royal British Legion’s webpage, their new Progress Pride Poppy Pin ‘symbolises support for our LGBTQ+ community who are a vital part of our Armed Forces past and present.’ Yet, one must ask if this attempt to rewrite history is truly necessary or even accurate. It’s hard to imagine British soldiers in the jungles of Burma during WWII stopping to declare their gender identity to their Sergeant Major. The experience of past servicemen and women was defined by duty, hardship, and sacrifice, not identity politics.

The public has long been led to believe that the Legion’s mission is to honour veterans and provide meaningful support for those who risked their lives in service. However, the recent push to tie Remembrance Day to divisive contemporary ideologies risks politicising a tradition that should unify, not divide.

Veterans’ issues should remain the Legion’s focus, not an endorsement of identity politics, especially when many of those who served and their families may not support this shift in direction.

Is it not possible for the Legion to honour all veterans without attaching a political label? Remembrance Day should be about recognising the ultimate sacrifice made by countless individuals, not about the virtue signalling of today’s social agendas.

Instead of honouring the bravery and sacrifices of our veterans, the Royal British Legion seems to be prioritising the hollow optics of today’s identity politics.

Bankrolling ‘trans’ agenda

Recently, the Legion has advertised for a Head of Diversity and Inclusion, offering an impressive £65,000 salary. That’s right—funds from poppy donations, intended for the support of veterans, now bankroll positions aimed at weaving DEI ideology ‘into everything we do.’ It doesn’t stop there. The Legion also diverts another £3,000 per year of poppy appeal donations toward Stonewall’s Diversity Champions scheme, a costly subscription that aligns with an agenda far removed from the Legion’s original mission.

The Legion’s online presence now features a webpage devoted to an ‘LGBTQ+ branch,’ yet the practical representation appears little more than superficial tokenism, promoting initiatives with limited reach and relevance. The Legion’s official social media claims this ‘Progress Pride Poppy’ is intended to boost ‘LGBTQIA+ allyship, intersex visibility, and inclusion worldwide.’ One has to wonder—why does Remembrance Day, a solemn tribute to those who served, need to be co-opted for ‘intersex visibility’?

The classic poppy was always a symbol for all, representing the sacrifices of all those who served, regardless of identity. However, by injecting divisive political ideologies into the poppy appeal, the Legion risks alienating its supporters, tarnishing a symbol that once stood purely for remembrance and respect. This mission drift does nothing but dilute the meaning of Remembrance Day, turning a unifying national emblem into yet another vehicle for virtue signalling.

Royal British Legion responds

In a defensive response to public criticism, a Legion representative on social media claimed, ‘The decision to use this flag was made in consultation with members of the LGBTQIA+ Armed Forces community.’ However, it’s unclear exactly who was consulted and whether this so-called ‘consultation’ truly reflected the majority perspective of the veteran community or the public. This selective process betrays the Legion’s long-standing, unifying mission by bending to a niche ideological agenda without broad consensus.

This situation with the Royal British Legion serves as a warning: when identity politics infiltrates respected institutions, the result is often a distortion of their purpose. All it takes is a handful of ideologues within an organisation to steer it off course, contaminating what once stood for genuine service and remembrance. If this ideological mission creep can compromise the Legion—a venerable symbol of honour and respect for veterans—it poses a similar threat to any institution unwittingly influenced by those seeking to advance their narrow agendas at the expense of their true mission.

As the Apostle Paul wrote:
1Co 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
