Lap Dancing Clubs Exploit Loophole

1

A feminist campaign has begun against a loophole which allows ‘lap dancing’ clubs to open as easily as coffee chops just as Christian activists in Worthing have discovered they are powerless to prevent these sleaze joints from opening.

The campaign group Object, backed by Baroness Gould, Labour MP Lynda Waltho and the Fawcett Society, launched a campaign against the clubs in Parliament on Tuesday 22nd April.

Object, part of the London Feminist Network, says that the 2003 Licensing Act introduced a loophole that allows the clubs to be licensed like cafés and karaoke nights, rather than as sex establishments. Women living and working near clubs face increased levels of sexual harassment and “no go” zones, it says.

According to The Guardian, although the first mainstream ‘lap dancing’ club opened in 1995, their number has doubled in Britain to more than 300 in four years because of the loophole and the marketing of ‘lap dancing’ as a leisure industry rather than as a branch of the commercial sex industry.

‘This categorisation is wholly inadequate given that evidence indicates ‘lap dancing’ clubs are part of the commercial sex industry,’ according to the Object report, published at the launch. ‘Many establishments are run in such a way that implicitly encourages clients to seek and expect sexual services from performers, and there is evidence that this occurs in some clubs,’ it said.

The report says that so-called ‘gentlemen’s evenings’ are being held in places like Somerset’s Burnham-on-Sea, and it cites Stourbridge, Lynda Waltho’s constituency, as having five pubs hosting ‘lap dancing’ nights, and two ‘lap dancing’ clubs.

The Guardian said: ‘In Brighton and Hove, the opening of six lap dancing clubs in a short period of time led the council to promote its own private bill in parliament, aimed at changing the law to license them as sex encounter establishments’.

Residents have so far only successfully challenged a local authority decision to grant a ‘lap dancing’ club a licence in Durham . There, the community group involved had to employ a barrister to challenge the decision and now faces the threat that it will be overturned by a high court judicial review.

Indeed, five local authorities who blocked ‘lap dancing’ club applications have been defeated on appeal. Knowing that, other local authorities, including Worthing , are reluctant to block the clubs because of the legal costs.

Even a long-time resident of Worthing, and one who has led successful campaigns to ban sex shops in the town, the veteran campaigner Steve Stevens, found that the rules had been rewritten to prevent him opposing the introduction of ‘lap dancing’ at the Liquid Lounge Club in Chatsworth Road.

‘I found that under the Licensing Act 203, I was not allowed to oppose it, as I had done successfully for three years in a row in opposing an Rl8 sex shop licence.

‘The Licensing Officer informed me that my being a resident in the Borough was not a valid reason to oppose it – unless I lived virtually in ear-shot of the premises. Neither my view nor anyone else’s in the Borough would be taken notice of. I could not believe my ears.’

Sandrine Levêque of Object said:

“Our campaign strips away the illusion that you can license cappuccinos in the same way as you license lap dancing. The law currently makes it easy for ‘lap dancing’ clubs to open, and difficult for local authorities to regulate them or listen to the views of people affected by them. The industry has used this to its advantage.”

She said categorising ‘lap dancing’ clubs as sex encounter establishments would put the power back into the hands of local residents and local authorities. ‘The law fails to reflect the social impact of ‘lap dancing’ clubs or the objections of residents nearby’.

Steve Stevens agrees: ‘This is a democratic country and we elect our Councillors expecting them to take our views seriously. Our neighbouring Borough of Brighton and Hove have been powerless under the Licensing Act 2003 to prevent ‘lap dancing.’

‘I decided to bypass the Licensing Committee and sent objections to all 35 Councillors. Friends helped me in just five hours to collect 600 petition signatures.

‘The Licensing Officer would not accept these signatures because they were not from people in the immediate vicinity, so I sent a copy of the blank petition form to all 35 Councillors mentioning the number of signatures collected in such a short space of time.’

Mr Stevens, a decorated world-war two fighter-bomber pilot, also enclosed a report from Torbay , describing how the police had opposed a ‘lap dancing’ license in the town. But it was all to no avail. Mr Stevens even went so far as to stand up and disrupt the Licensing Committee meeting with an impromptu speech. He says, ‘I knew that would be civil disobedience and I was uneasy as I had never done anything like this before.’

However, the Chairman simply adjourned the meeting to another room, leaving Steve Stevens to face the wrath of his fellow protestors. ‘My Christian friends were appalled at what I had done,’ he told Christian Voice. Meanwhile, the application for ‘lap dancing’ was approved.

The issue was recently raised by MPs. Gerry Sutcliffe MP, the culture minister in charge of licensing, said the Government believed the licensing legislation could be used to control ‘lap dancing’ premises. He promised, however, to raise the issue with Home Office ministers.

PRAY: For an open heart in the Government to this problem, especially now that a feminist group, to whom they may be more sympathetic, has joined the fray. Thank God for the consistent witness of Steve Stevens and pray that his fellow believers in Worthing would not stay too angry with him for too long.

READ: Eph 4:26.

WRITE: To your MP. Ask if your MP has seen the report from ‘Object’. Ask if he is aware that ‘lap dancing’ clubs are failing to be categorised as sex establishments and that local councillors are unable to take any but the most local of objections into account. Ask him to write to the appropriate minister to demand a change in the law.

EDM: Lynda Waltho has put down an Early Day Motion demanding that ‘lap dancing’ clubs be treated the same as sex shops to give local authorities greater powers to ban them and ‘local people a better say in licensing policy.’. Ask your MP to sign Lynda Waltho’s EDM which is number 1375.

Princes’ Stag Night Binge Drink Disgrace

RAF bosses have been criticised for allowing Prince William to show off to his girlfriend Kate Middleton by landing a helicopter on her parent’s land. They have defended the stunt as a ‘training exercise’.

But it was the culmination of a previous helicopter jaunt that has seen Princes William and Harry criticised for setting an example of binge drinking just as one of the latest casualties has spoken out.

Last week the newspapers reported on the ‘stag night’ of Peter Phillips, tenth in line to the throne, in a public house on the Isle of Wight . Prince William, second in line, used a training run in an RAF helicopter to reach the event, picking up his brother in London on the way.

According to reports, the second in line to the throne downed ‘pint after pint’ and dropped his trousers to flash his boxer shorts during a drinking game in the Anchor pub in Cowes .

Meanwhile, Prince Harry spent much of the evening taking a funnel filled with beer around the pub, encouraging the bemused locals to drink it straight down their throats.

At one point, Prince Harry got into a drunken panic that Phillips was missing, and resorted to a foul-mouthed tirade across the packed house, yelling: “Where the f*** is the stag? We’ve lost the f****** stag.” Phillips, 29, was later found slumped in a shop doorway.

Many comments on newspaper websites from the public were astonishingly congratulatory, with people saying the princes’ drinking frenzy made them ‘proud to be British’.

However, one paper, the Daily Mail, carried on the very same day a report headed ‘The binge drinking girl who suffered liver failure at just 14’. Natasha Farnham started drinking heavily at the age of 12. Just two years later she had liver failure. She was drinking wine and alcopops, using her dinner money and cash stolen from her mother to buy it. She now has memory loss and is warning other youngsters of the dangers of binge-drinking.

The Mail, seemingly oblivious to the irony of carrying the story of the royal binge in the same edition, said, ‘Her descent into a life of ruined health and petty crime illustrates the perils of cheap alcohol and the culture of binge-drinking that grips Britain .’

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘This isn’t the first time the papers have carried reports of royal drunkenness. We talk of “noblesse oblige”, the responsibility of those in the public eye to behave better than the rest of us and thereby to set a wholesome example. Of course with their fornicating and drinking, the royal princes are not the only people in public life dragging the rest of us down. Most newspapers have a page in which the drunkenness of self-destructing celebrities is reported day after depressing day.

‘It is scarcely deniable that the cult of celebrity influences young people into thinking that getting drunk is a cool thing to do. Given that the Continent has nothing like our problems of drunkenness, blaming it on cheap drink and the supermarkets is too simplistic. The fact is, there is a death wish in our culture, and the Princes are not just part of that, but driving it. Before a Government minister rails against binge-drinking again, the Prime Minister ought to mention it in his weekly audience with the grandmother of two of the worst culprits.’

Succession Rules ‘Sexist’ Says Libdem MP

The law on royal succession which puts any son ahead of his elder sister are under attack again. Jeffrey, Lord Archer was the last parliamentarian to introduce a bill to change the rules before he was sent to prison.

Now Vera Baird, the Solicitor General has weighed in with an extraordinarily patronising statement that ‘what we have to do with the Royal Family is integrate them as far as possible into the human race.’ The ban on the monarch marrying a Roman Catholic is also ‘discriminatory’. A Single Equality Bill expected later this year may include measures to change both practises.

Libdem equality ‘spokesperson’, Lynne Featherstone MP, said a reform on the succession rules would receive cross-party support. ‘We can’t allow a blatantly sexist law on royal succession to continue,’ she said, ‘Let’s confine this outdated message that men are better than women to the dustbin of history.’

Even the Queen is said to be supportive of the change, which would only affect the children of Prince William, in the event he were to succeed and sire a legitimate daughter before a son. In fact, by the time Her Majesty’s great grand-child is due to succeed to what is left of the throne, Britain could be a very different place, so on one level to change the rules does not matter.

However, it will not have escaped the notice of those agitating for this change that the order of succession derives from the Christian faith. The Crown is treated in our law as property to be inherited which means the principles established in the case of Zelophehad’s Daughters apply. Numbers 27:8 established that inheritance should pass to the daughters if a man died and had no son. And whether the feminocracy like it or not, God made the man to rule over the woman. As it happens, they don’t like it, so this move to change the law is one more instance of overturning God’s created order and chipping away at our Christian Constitution.

The bulk of the human race to which the Royal Family is being invited to join is actually quite happy to see the man as head of the household. Businesses pass to sons along with aristocratic titles. and a woman marrying will take her husband’s name, as Lynne Featherstone (née Ryness) and Vera Baird (née Thomas) will no doubt testify.

Chief Rabbi is killing civility

0

In an perceptive Telegraph article headed: ‘In a land without morals, it’s no wonder children kill each other‘, author Jeff Randall quoted the Chief Rabbi.  Here is what he said:

‘ Britain ‘s Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, sums up the anxieties of many: “We are living through the death of civility … Today, it is commonplace to encounter road rage, muggings, street crime, drunkenness, lager louts, hoodies, yobbishness and laddishness. Teachers are attacked in the classroom. Nurses encounter violence from patients.”‘

Yes, indeed, the death of civility.  Now could this be the same Chief Rabbi who has repeatedly failed to condemn the blasphemous, pornographic, thoroughly uncivil statue of Jesus Christ with a phallus stuck on the front, owned by his well-healed friends Poju and Anita Zabludowicz?  The statue which they stubbornly kept on public display at the Baltic Centre in Gateshead earlier this year knowing full well it was offending good taste and decency and the civilised values of ordinary people including Christians, among them Christian friends of Israel and the Jewish people?  The statue they still refuse to destroy, making their friend the Chief Rabbi look like a total hypocrite when he calls piously for people to respect what others hold sacred?  www.chiefrabbi.org/articles/tftd/03feb06.htm

Yes sadly it is the same Chief Rabbi, and the same statue.  And the Chief Rabbi just cannot stop pontificating about the importance of civilised values, despite failing to display them in his own ministry and his chums trampling them in the mud.  ‘Can I respect your faith?’ he asked in Thought for the Day.  www.chiefrabbi.org/articles/tftd/03feb06.htm

No, Sir Jonathan, you can’t.  We are living through the death of civility.  And what a shame it is that you and your friends are helping to kill it.

‘Jesus’ Porn Film Could Be Licensed

0

The Observer has reported that film censors have invited the maker of a film showing Christ being caressed on the cross to resubmit an application in the wake of the House of Lords vote to abolish the blasphemy laws.

The British Board of Film Classification refused a licence for Visions of Ecstasy, which showed St Teresa of Avila caressing the body of Jesus in 1989 on the grounds that it was blasphemous.

Nigel Wingrove, the film’s director, appealed against the UK to the European Court of Human Rights but was ruled against. The UK , said the Court, had every right to have a blasphemy law.

Now, Craig Lapper, Chief Assistance (policy) of the board’s examining body, has invited Wingrove to resubmit the film for classification.  It makes one wonder whether the role of the BBFC is to adjudicate on what is sent to it, or to go scurrying around for rotting morsels in the dustbins of sleaze.

Wingrove himself is now a distributor of horror movies, and admitted that the invitation to resubmit his 19-minute pornographic shoot had come ‘completely out of the blue’. He said he was ‘in two minds’ about whether to agree. ‘People say I should put it out, but on a personal level I have reservations. If I did release it, I would need to put it into context and perhaps release a documentary to accompany it.’

Wingrove believes the board is now largely ‘irrelevant’ because the internet has circumvented its ability to censor, but the Observer claims that ‘secular groups’ will be using him as a pawn, encouraging him to seek a release licence as a way of signalling the death knell of the blasphemy law.

Terry Sanderson, the homosexual president of the National Secular Society, who lives in Ealing with its creepy Executive Director, Keith Pompous Wood, said the blasphemy law ‘put into the hands of bigots a weapon to punish those who want to criticise or satirise religion. We hope that the BBFC will now give a certificate to Visions of Ecstasy as a signal to film makers that they need no longer censor themselves when exploring religious themes.’

Nevertheless, Visions of Ecstasy was never about criticism or satire of religion. Wingrove himself said: ‘I was exploring areas of dark eroticism’. It was a porn film blaspheming Christ as a selling point.

Mr Wingrove’s production companies have names like Purgatory Films, Gothica Films, Salvation Films and Redemption Films. Themes of sex and violence predominate in what are brazenly described as ‘exploitation cinema’. Do not make the mistake of visiting his website where films with titles like Satanic Sluts, Slashers and Killer’s Moon are offered. The latter, which dates from 1978, is described on the website as ‘a truly nasty little film’ with ‘no moral restraint’. The BBFC gave it an X-certificate. This is truly another world which should not exist in a civilised nation.

PRAY: That Nigel Wingrove will not resubmit Visions of Ecstasy.  Pray for him, that his troubled soul will find rest in the Lord Jesus Christ.  He needs to know where salvation and redemption are really found.

Met Becomes Private Security Force for Olympic Torch

Sir Ian Blair was criticised today for allowing the Metropolitan Police to become an additional private security force for the Olympic Torch procession.

The Commissioner of the Met said in a television interview that the Metropolitan Police would ‘do everything’ to protect the Olympic Torch procession from being disrupted by demonstrators.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said this afternoon:

‘Sir Ian Blair should not have provided the Olympic authorities with an additional free private security firm in Metropolitan Police uniforms. The Chinese security should have been increased instead of presenting Londoners with a bill for something totally outside their control.

‘Instead, the police should allow protests and merely keep the way clear for the procession. It should be the responsibility of the Olympic authorities to provide protection for the misguided celebrities taking part.’

In the past, Christian Voice has protested outside the Chinese Embassy against the Chinese policy of forced abortions and the Chinese Government’s treatment of Christians. Christians who are not members of state-registered churches are, like Falun Gong followers, subjected to summary arrest, imprisonment and torture by a regime which cannot tolerate what it cannot control.

Stephen Green said: ‘The last time we held a witness outside the Chinese Embassy, the Met had to be forced to allow it by the threat of court action. The British police should not allow themselves to be used as a private security force to save the blushes of one of the most despotic and anti-Christian regimes on God’s earth. ‘

Christians Witness Against Redhill Muslim march

3

Christians led by Christian Voice held a witness against a march by Muslims in Redhill on Easter Sunday.

Around 70 Muslims paraded from the Memorial Park in Redhill down to the Redhill Islamic Centre and Mosque in nearby Earlswood.

They were met by a small witness along the route and were told that Jesus Christ was indeed crucified, dead and buried (which the Koran denies) but that He rose victorious from the dead.

The local police told Christian Voice that the march was to celebrate the birthday of the prophet Mohammed, although his birth was actually observed the previous Thursday.

The march followed the attack on Canon Michael Ainsworth in the churchyard of St George-in-the-East in Tower Hamlets just before Palm Sunday, the 16th, the Sunday before Easter, and it was conducted in an agressive, intimidating manner.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said:

‘A march is a pubic declaration. The Muslims are parading through Redhill knowing full well that Easter Sunday is the holiest day of the Christian year. They are deliberately disrespecting Jesus Christ and exalting their prophet over Him.

‘If they had genuinely wanted to observe their prophet’s birthday, they could have done that in private, and if they really had to march, they could have done that on the actual day kept in the Muslim world for the purpose, which is Thursday, or on Saturday, the normal day for marches.

‘The attack on Canon Ainsworth just last week shows the true face of Islam, with young men following the example of Mohammed, who spread his new religion at the point of the sword. His church has also been attacked, and Muslims have shouted that it ought to be a mosque.

‘The Redhill march was from the same frame of mind, asserting Muslim dominance over an area, and saying that Islam is superior to Christianity. It was a deliberate insult to Christ, who has been honoured and revered in this land for almost 2,000 years.

‘Only in Christianity do we have the certainty of sins forgiven, and the Easter message is one of hope and reconciliation between God and man, celebrating Christ’s triumph over sin and death and the new life He brings. Sadly, Muslims deny all the truth of Jesus and His victory. Yet ironically it is only He, the living Saviour, who can save them. Their dead prophet will keep them sunk in their sins.’

A local Anglican clergyman passing by said he had good relations with the Muslims and that he was against the witness.

A smaller contingent from something called the British People’s Party also turned up but stood apart from Christian Voice. The party’s website proclaims ‘racial nationalism’ and the need to ‘save the white race’.

Stephen Green concluded: ‘As our witness included two brothers of African origon, the ‘BPP’ people plainly had as much wish to mix with us as we had to be associated with them.’

Blasphemy Law Abolition ‘Will Bring Judgment’

0

The Government forced abolition of the blasphemy laws through the House of Lords last night (5th March 2008) by whipping the Labour vote. Lord Clarke of Hampstead, Lord Davies of Coity and Lord Kirkhill all rebelled against their party’s whip but it was not enough as the vote went through by 148 votes to 87.

There were tremendous speeches by Baroness O’Cathain, Lord Armstrong of Ilminster, Lord Davies of Coity, Lord Forsyth of Drumlean, Lord Kingsland QC, Lord Neill of Bladen, Baroness Park of Monmouth and Lord Selsdon in favour of keeping the blasphemy laws. Lord Elton was in blistering form as well, and the Bishop of Chester also spoke up for righteousness. He was joined by the Bishops of Rochester and Southwell in the ‘No’ lobby.

Sad to say, the Bishops of Durham and Portsmouth both spoke and voted to allow evil men to insult and vilify their Lord. The Archbishop of York made a Guardian editorial of a speech and then abstained from the vote in a depressing night for the Christian majority in Britain and for Anglicans in particular.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said this morning:

‘This is a sad day for the United Kingdom. Parliament has set the honour of Almighty God at nought just to please a few hard-line secularists. There is no doubt that those against abolition won the debate, but the ‘Noes’ lost the vote in the face of the shameful Labour whip.

‘The Earl of Onslow scoffed at the capacity of the Lord Jesus Christ to bring judgment against those responsible for blasphemy, but it is the judgment of God against this United Kingdom as a whole which troubles me. I do not know in what form it will fall, whether in some dramatic way, or whether simply in an increasing culture of crassness, disrespect and inhumanity. But fall it will, and we shall have only ourselves to blame.

‘By the grace of God, Christians will continue to protest against blasphemy, as we did so successfully over the tour of Jerry Springer the Opera. Through the relentless witness and evangelism which I helped to organise, the Lord reduced the tour to a financial disaster, and its director, Stewart Lee, has said it will never be shown in this country again.

‘That leaves us with Anita Zabludowicz’s lewd and blasphemous statue to which, interestingly enough, the Bishop of Durham referred in the debate – and in less than flattering terms. The blasphemy laws would have provided the most appropriate way of dealing with this case, which is an insult against the Lord Jesus Christ. It may be there is another way in which the law can call those responsible for this outrage to account, but it will not be nearly as effective or send as strong a signal about the central place of Christianity in our constitution.

‘I believe that one way or another, and by God’s grace, there isn’t going to be blasphemy in this United Kingdom. It is a pity that it will probably have to be stopped in many cases without recourse to the law, but obviously the Lord is calling Christians to stand up for His holiness in other ways in these God-defying days.’

Lords Let BBC off the Hook

In an ignoble move, the House of Lords’ Appeal Committee has rejected the petition for appeal from Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, in the Jerry Springer the Opera case.

Lords Bingham of Cornhill, Hoffman and Hope of Craighead said:

‘Permission is refused because the petition does not raise an arguable point of law of general public importance which ought to be considered by the House at this time, bearing in mind that the cause has already been the subject of judicial decision and reviewed on appeal.’

The ‘judicial decision’ to which the Law Lords refer was that of Westminster Magistrates, who refused to issue a summons for a private prosecution against Mark Thompson of the BBC and the show’s producer Jonathan Thoday. The High Court (Divisional Court) rejected an request for judicial review in December 2007. The House of Lords was the next and final court of appeal in the England and Wales jurisdiction.

Michael Phillips, Stephen Green’s solicitor in the case, said today:

‘This ruling is a great shame. The High Court’s decision was bad law – indeed one independent commentator described it as “without legal merit”.

The decision of the House of Lords, in conceding that there was a point of law at issue – that of whether theatres and broadcasters have a legal loophole to blaspheme – but declining to hear it on a pretext, brings the Jerry Springer the Opera case to an end. It means there is no redress in British law against those who portrayed Jesus Christ on stage and on the BBC as an infantile coprophiliac, told by the character of Jerry Springer in the show to ‘Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.’ Apparently Jesus Christ, Mary the mother of the Lord and Almighty God may now be ridiculed and insulted on stage and by broadcasters free from the sanctions of the law.

Stephen Green said,

‘Contrary to the finding of these Law Lords, it is indeed a matter of great general public importance at this very time that the Almighty Creator of the universe and the Saviour of mankind have been insulted and vilified in this United Kingdom. It brings down the judgment of God on us all. I love my neighbour and I do not want that to happen.

‘Christians will now have to take matters into their own hands when Christ is insulted on stage and on screen. As it happens, our campaign against the theatre tour of Jerry Springer the Opera was highly successful, by the grace of God. The producers and theatres lost a fortune and Stewart Lee himself said it was ‘ruined’. Blasphemy isn’t going to happen on stage in the United Kingdom, it’s just that unless and until this loophole is closed, Christians will have to find avenues other than those of the law.

‘To be frank, the decision of their Lordships Bingham, Hoffman and Hope is a blatant, shameless political manoeuvre by a God-defying elite intent on looking after their own. Lord Hoffman in particular has voted in the House of Lords for no-fault divorce and for gay rights. A judge like that would always be prejudiced against those seeking to uphold righteousness. Furthermore, and in retrospect, it seems there was no way the Establishment could countenance the Director of General of the BBC appearing in the dock accused of blasphemy. So first the Divisional Court, then the House of Lords, jumped through hoops to get him off.

‘In doing so, they have conveniently forgotten a first Biblical principle of the law, not to show partiality: ‘Thou shalt hear the small as well as the great.’ The cases of the Bishop of Hereford and Andrew McLintock, and now this one, show that Christians cannot expect justice any more. There will be rare exceptions, but in general, the playing field is now on quite a slant.’

The House of Lords is due to debate the abolition of the offence of blasphemy on Wednesday this week. Christian Voice is praying that the law will be strengthened rather than abolished.

Stephen Green concluded:

‘If this is to remain a Christian country, with the Archbishop of Canterbury crowning the future king, Parliament needs to legislate quickly to protect the honour of Jesus Christ, who is always the blasphemer’s target, in whichever medium he is insulted. It is ridiculous for theatres and broadcasters to be exempt from the blasphemy law. This loophole must be closed.’

Michael Phillips added:

‘Recently there has been another blasphemy which we believe has fallen foul of the law, namely the grotesque statue of the Lord Jesus Christ with an attached phallus in the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. Many Christians from all backgrounds demonstrated against this, and the strength of feeling ran high. Many expressed a desire to take direct action against the statue, but desisted. Those same people are willing to assist in a private prosecution for blasphemy. Were this law to be abolished where would their redress be? The police showed no interest in dealing with these people’s grievances and the art centre kept the statue in place until the end of the exhibition.’

The exhibition ran until 20th January, when the pornographic statue was returned to Anita Zabludowicz, wife of Poju Zabludowicz, the high-profile chairman of the Britain Israel Communications and Research Council (BICOM) and a member of the Jewish Leadership Council. There have been calls from within both the Christian and Jewish community for the blasphemous and offensive statue, which has soured relations between pro-Israel evangelicals and Jews, to be destroyed by its owners.

Lords’ Decision Imminent in Jerry Springer Case

The House of Lords is poised to decide whether to hear an appeal in the Jerry Springer the Opera case, Christian Voice has learned.

The case is going to the Appeal Committee of the House of Lords this week, and a decision whether or not to hear the case is expected to be made shortly.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, is seeking to bring a prosecution for blasphemy against Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, in respect of the BBC2 broadcast of the show on 8th January 2005, and the show’s producer Jonathan Thoday.

In December, two High Court judges ruled that theatres and broadcasters were exempt from the law against blasphemy. a decision described by the authoritative law journal Criminal Law Week as ‘devoid of any legal merit’. Mr Justice Collins and Lord Justice Hughes refused to allow the prosecution to go ahead.

However, Stephen Green’s application to appeal against the High Court decision was lodged by his legal team with the House of Lords on 3rd January this year.

The appeal to the House of Lords has induced a state of panic amongst secularists campaigning against the Christian constitution of the United Kingdom . Terrified that Green might win in the House of Lords, Dr Evan Harris moved an amendment to abolish the blasphemy laws later that month during the passage of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill. He withdrew his amendment after a promise by the Government to move their own.

Amendments to abolish the blasphemy laws have now been put down for the Committee Stage of the Bill in the House of Lords, one by Lord Avebury and the other by the Earl of Onslow and Baroness Stern. A Government amendment has not yet tabled, and Stephen Green’s solicitors, Criminal Law Advocates of Reading, have written to the Government to make them aware of the latest development in the appeal to the House of Lords.

Stephen Green said today:

‘I can see why the secularists, who love insulting Jesus Christ, want to get on and abolish the blasphemy laws. They complain they haven’t been used for thirty years, which is not strictly correct, but now that a case is about to be brought, they are running scared.

‘But it would be completely unreasonable, not to say churlish, of the House of Lords to abolish the blasphemy laws just while a case revolving around them is being considered by the House of Lords itself.’

Note to Editors: Wingrove’s film Visions of Ecstasy was banned by the BBFC because of the blasphemy laws and that decision was upheld by the European Court of Human Rights, as were the convictions of Gay News and its editor Denis Lemon in the Gay News case in 1982.

The blasphemy laws prevent “any contemptuous, reviling, scurrilous or ludicrous matter relating to God, Jesus Christ, or the Bible.”

Jerry Springer the Opera featured Jesus Christ as an infantile coprophiliac, who was told by Jerry Springer in the show to ‘Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.’

Top Jewish Lawyer Supports Christian Voice Over Statue

A top Jewish lawyer has supported a call from Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, for Terence Koh’s pornographic statue of Jesus Christ, which Christians have described as blasphemous, to be destroyed by its owners, a prominent Jewish couple.

Leading criminal law barrister Jonathan Goldberg QC made his plea in a letter to the Jewish Chronicle, which was published today.

The statue, part of a collection owned by Anita Zabludowicz, was on display at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead .  The exhibition closed on Saturday 20th January and Mrs Zabludowicz now has her statue back.

Her husband, Finnish billionaire Poju Zabludowicz, sits on the Jewish Leadership Council with the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, the President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Mr Henry Grunwald, QC, and a host of the Jewish great and good.

‘It is unpardonable to show such disrespect and cause such gratuitous offence to our Christian friends and supporters of Israel , above all in these troubled times,’ wrote Mr Goldberg.

‘Mr and Mrs Poju Zabludowicz should now demonstrate the qualities of Jewish communal leadership to which they aspire, no doubt worthily, by consigning this artefact to the depths,’ he concluded.
Stephen Green said:

‘Those of us who honour the Jewish roots of our Christian faith and the place of Israel in God’s purpose will be dismayed to see such disrespect of our faith from such prominent members of the Jewish community, whom we regard as the cultivated Olive Tree, from Romans 11:13-24.

‘Back in 2005, the Chief Rabbi lectured on “How to build a culture of respect”. He spoke of the Christian and Jewish communities feeling “on the defensive” and “bruised” in the face of onslaughts from secularists and Islamists.  In February 2006, he asked on the BBC: “Can we learn to respect what others hold holy?”

‘If these are to be more than just words, such a disrespectful piece of plaster, insulting the One whom Christians hold most holy of all, can find no place amongst the possessions of a prominent Jewish couple who know the Chief Rabbi personally.

‘The thought of Mr & Mrs Zabludowicz owning or profiting from a statue humiliating and blaspheming the Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua Meshiach, brings up thoughts that I really do not want to entertain.  That is why I am very grateful to Jonathan Goldberg QC for his gracious support.  Whatever that disgraceful statue is worth, good relations between Christian and Jews are worth far, far more.’

Blasphemy: Atheist Arguments Examine and Ambitions Exposed

1

‘God can look after Himself’

When we use that expression about a mortal man, we mean he has the ability to knock us down.  So by saying ‘God can look after Himself’ one can only mean He can bring judgment against individuals and nations, knowing that ‘As a man (or a nation) sows, so shall he reap’.  That should fill us with holy fear, not the desire to humiliate His name.

The Offence is Discriminatory

Of course it is.  It protects Almighty God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible and the formularies of the Church of England from contemptuous, scurrilous, reviling and ludicrous attacks.  That is because Britain is a Christian nation with a Christian heritage, culture and constitution, an established church and a 72% Christian population.  Christianity is the faith of the United Kingdom and it is right for it to be given special recognition in our laws.

It only applies to the Church of England

No, it doesn’t.  Although ‘the formularies of the Church of England’ are point four in the usual definition of the blasphemy law, the Church of England does not have a monopoly on God, Jesus Christ or the Bible.  Other denominations share the historic doctrines of the Church embodied in the doctrines of the Church of England.  But in any case the law, as has been shown elsewhere, is primarily there to prevent attacks on the person of Jesus Christ.

The law engenders an expectation that other religions will be protected.

Not true.  The Salman Rushdie case established that our blasphemy laws do not protect Islam.

The blasphemy laws are against Human Rights Article 10

Not true.  In every case (Lemon, Wingrove and Preminger) brought before the European Court of Human Rights, state blasphemy laws including our own have been upheld.

The offence is divisive and against social cohesion

It is not the law against blasphemy which divides and damages social cohesion, it is the lack of any civilised standards of decency, restraint, respect and consideration in the world of the arts.  What the arts call ‘freedom of expression’ the rest of us too often have to describe as obscene, blasphemous, offensive, inhuman, pornographic, degrading or just plain crass.

The offence limits our ability to criticise Muslim countries

This argument says that as we have a blasphemy law, we cannot criticise Sudan ‘s blasphemy law under which a teacher was sentenced to fourteen days for allowing a teddy bear to be called Muhammed.  Sudan also has a law against theft, under which a thief may have his hand cut off.  We also have a law against theft.  The fact that we have a law by the same name as theirs does not mean we cannot criticise their threshold of tolerance or penalties.

A Christian’s faith should not need the protection of the secular courts

Our courts are not secular, because Her Majesty the Queen is a Christian monarch and they sit in her name.  The blasphemy law is not ‘about faith’ it is about respect for the sacred, in particular, for the person of Jesus Christ, who is always the blasphemers’ target.

This is not the beginning of a ‘slippery slope’

Oh, yes it is!  While most MPs were busy debating blasphemy last Thursday night, three of them slipped away to put down an Early Day Motion for disestablishment of the Church of England.  The motion came out with the number 666.  Is God trying to tell us something?

AFTER THE ABOLITION OF THE BLASPHEMY LAWS – WHAT NEXT?

Despite Dr Evan Harris’s specific denial in the House of Commons of a ‘slippery slope’, the abolition of the laws against blasphemy and blasphemous libel is not a stand-alone campaign by the extremist anti‑God National Secular Society.  It is merely today’s first item on the secularist agenda for the de‑Christianisation of Britain .

Once the blasphemy law is abolished, secularists will justifiably say: ‘There, the criminal law doesn’t protect the name of Jesus Christ or privilege the Christian faith any more.’

From that bridgehead, they will move on to their next target, which is the disestablishment of the Church of England.  Such is their confidence that Bob Russell MP and two others put down exactly that as an Early Day Motion while Dr Harris’ amendment was actually being debated in the House of Commons on Thursday 10th January 2008 .

In a curious spiritual twist, the next number which fell to the clerks to allocate to that motion was 666, the Biblical Mark of the Beast.  “It looks as though God or the Devil have been moving in mysterious ways,” said Bob Russell.  “What is even stranger is that this motion was tabled last night when MPs were debating blasphemy.”

After disestablishment, or even as part of it, the Bishops will lose their seats in the House of Lords and with that, much of their influence in the land.

Church schools will go, as it will be argued that Christianity has voluntarily given up its privileged position as the faith of the United Kingdom .

Prayers in Parliament will be sidelined, made multifaith or abolished altogether.

Christians will find themselves increasingly under attack for their beliefs in public service jobs.  They will be told to keep their views to themselves.

The Church will completely lose its charitable status (the assumption that a religious purpose is charitable has already gone).   Faith‑based initiatives in the social sphere will have to give up their Christian ethos to gain Government approval.

The default position that witnesses swear on the Holy Bible in court will be replaced by an assumption that an affirmation is all that is necessary.  The Bible will be available for a little while for those who insist upon swearing upon it, then it will go, or become just one of a number of available sacred texts.

Public manifestations of the Christian Faith will be attacked one by one.  Hospitals and the armed forces will no longer have paid chaplains.  Mayors’ chaplains will abolished.  Faith will be relegated to a private matter with no relevance to the public sphere, leaving the arena of public policy clear for atheist agenda‑setters alone.

Laws based on Christian principles will be systematically changed to be in line with atheist beliefs.  This is happening right now, of course, but the process will accelerate.

Finally, there will be a radical de‑Christianising of the Coronation Service.  With no Christianity to speak of in public life, the idea of God anointing the monarch through the Archbishop of Canterbury to reign as a Christian prince will be unsustainable.

The divorce of the Christian Faith from the United Kingdom will have been accomplished.

And it all started with abolition of the blasphemy laws.

Blasphemy: Bishop Says All Churches Must Get Involved

1

A leading Bishop has dismissed the myth that the blasphemy law ‘only applies to the Church of England’.  He called for all churches to have a say.

Speaking in the House of Lords Second Reading Debate (22nd January) of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, the Bishop of Manchester said all Christian churches should take part in the current discussions.

The Bishop, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said:

‘I would like to correct a common misapprehension about the law of blasphemy. It is often said that it protects only the tenets of the Church of England, but that statement is based on a faulty reading of case law. The judgment of the Administrative Court in the Jerry Springer case on 5 December 2007 usefully confirmed that the factual basis of the offence includes, contemptuous, reviling, scurrilous and/or ludicrous material relating to God, Christ [or] the Bible’.

‘The law therefore protects the basic tenets and scripture of the Christian religion. I mention that because it means that a response to the proposal for abolition is not a matter for the Church of England alone but for Christian denominations and groups more generally.’

The Government have announced their intention to consult the Church of England about abolition of the blasphemy laws after Dr Evan Harris MP (Liberal Democrat, Honorary  Associate of the National Secular Society, militant atheist) put down an amendment to abolish the offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel in a debate in the House of Commons on Thursday 10th January.

Fearful of losing in a vote, Maria Eagle MP, the Minister, promised the Government would bring in their own amendment after ‘consulting’ the Church of England.  Most observers agreed the Church of England would thereby be ‘bounced’ into supporting such a move.  However, Dr McCulloch’s intervention shows the Church of England realises that the blasphemy laws are there to protect the holiness of the Lord Jesus Christ and might not be ‘bounced’ so easily.

PRAY: That God will even now be working to frustrate the blasphemers’ plans.  Pray that He will have mercy on our land and safeguard our national respect for His great name.

PRAY: That wherever groups of ministers and laity meet whether in local synods, PCC’s or fraternals, that a motion will be passed supporting the laws against blasphemy and that such a vote will be communicated to local bishops, MP’s, peers and the local press.  If you take part in one of those meetings, please seize the moment.

ITS ALL ABOUT INSULTING JESUS

It is being commonly said that abolition of the blasphemy laws will merely allow ‘debate, criticism or even ridicule’ of the Christian Faith which is currently prevented.

That is not the case.  ‘The God Delusion‘, with its debate, criticism and even ridicule of the Christian Faith, has been published with impunity.   Atheist magazines circulate freely, complete with debate, criticism and even ridicule of the Christian Faith.

Others argue that the blasphemy laws can go because there is protection for ‘the established church’ under the religious hatred law.

But the prime purpose of the laws against blasphemy and blasphemous libel is not to protect the sacrament of baptism or the evensong service, despite the reference in the definition of blasphemy to ‘the formularies of the Church of England’.

The truth, the elephant in the room, so to speak, is that the target of blasphemers is nearly always the Lord Jesus Christ, and the blasphemy laws have only been invoked recently in prosecutions for the most extreme and gratuitous insults against His person.

JESUS IS THE BLASPHEMER’S TARGET

This was true in the case of the ‘Gay News’ poem, a homosexual fantasy of what a Roman soldier wanted to do with the crucified body of Christ.  The prosecution brought by Mary Whitehouse in 1977 was successful and was upheld in the European Court of Human Rights.

Wingrove’s ‘Visions of Ecstasy’ contained a sequence of a nun having sexual relations with the body of Jesus Christ.  The banning of the film by the BBFC in 1989 for its blasphemous content was likewise upheld in the European Court of Human Rights as recently as 1996.

‘Jerry Springer the Opera’ centred on humiliating Jesus Christ by casting His character as a sexual deviant, an infantile coprophiliac, to be precise.  There was much more that was blasphemous in it, but that was the centre-piece.

SPRINGER CASE NOW IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, petitioned the House of Lords on 3rd January to appeal against the decision of the High Court last month not to allow a prosecution to proceed in respect of Jerry Springer the Opera.  Serious matters of public importance need to be decided.  So it is untrue, as has been said, that this case has been lost.  It is not over yet and it would be premature for Parliament to pull the rug from under the case while it is still going on.

Indeed, this case might provide a reason for the current rush to abolish the blasphemy laws.  It occurs to me that Evan Harris MP (an Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society) and his friends are concerned we are going to win in the House of Lords and bring a successful prosecution for blasphemy in respect of Jerry Springer the Opera.  They argue that a prosecution hasn’t been brought for thirty years, but now that a case is about to be decided upon in the courts, they are afraid they might lose.

BALTIC CENTRE STATUE IS LATEST EXAMPLE

In Gateshead on Saturday there was a well-attended protest against the latest example of blasphemy, a disgraceful statue of Jesus Christ with a phallus attached being exhibited in the Baltic Centre.  During the protest, Christians went in to the centre to gather evidence to prosecute those involved.  Police attended, but all went off peacefully.  An evangelistic leaflet was given out.

However, there was much anger amongst those present outside the centre, and it could fairly be said that it is only the laws against blasphemy, and the knowledge that someone can be brought to book under them, which prevented a serious breach of the peace inside the Baltic Centre.

But once again, the Baltic Centre statue is not about ‘debate, criticism or even ridicule’ of the Christian Faith.  It is about disrespecting and insulting the Lord Jesus Christ.

So anyone in favour of abolishing the laws against blasphemy must explain why he wishes to see the person of Jesus Christ vilified and humiliated, and just how that helps build the ‘culture of respect’ in our society which the Chief Rabbi called for in a recent lecture.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS BEGINS WITH RESPECT FOR GOD

As the Lord Jesus Christ said in His parable of the unjust judge, respect for others begins with respect for God.  It would be reasonable to take the view that to stem a growing culture of disrespect, the blasphemy laws are more important in 2008 than at any previous time.

Lastly, some well-meaning people who are going along with abolition of the blasphemy laws, Christians among them, seem to be regarding this matter in isolation, or at best in conjunction with the religious hatred laws.

The hard-line secularists actually pressing the amendments, however, while denying there is an agenda, have shown that abolition of these laws is not an isolated issue. The ‘666’ EDM to disestablish the Church of England and the website of the National Secular Society reveal that abolition of the offence of blasphemy is just one step towards an atheist Britain, in which Christianity, which they despise, is washed from the public square.

IT IS TIME FOR THEE, LORD, TO WORK

Again, the Lord Jesus said, ‘The children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.’  Good-hearted people of faith supporting the abolition of the blasphemy laws will in this view be like turkeys voting for Christmas.

The last time this matter was debated in the House of Lords, just over two years ago, there was a healthy majority for retaining the blasphemy laws.  But then the Government were in favour of keeping the law.  Now they are not.  So, right now, everything seems against us, but just at this very moment, the Lord is working, and apparent co-incidences are building up.  ‘It is time for thee, Lord, to work’ (Psalm 119:126).

Disestablishment Motion Has Mark of the Beast!

No, you couldn’t make this one up.  Seriously.  While the blasphemy debate was on in the House of Commons last night, and just as we were thinking that once the blasphemy law is abolished they would be calling for disestablishment of the Church of England as the next step along the road to an anti-Christian Britain, well, three MP’s were putting down an Early Day Motion (it has no chance of being debated, it’s just flying a kite) calling, er, for the Church of England to be disestablished.

Dozens of these motions get put down in a day on all sorts of issues.  The clerks just allocated it the next number in the list.  In a masterly twist, that number was 666, symbol of the Antichrist. Click here to see the motion on the Parliament website.

“This number is supposed to be the mark of the Devil. It looks as though God or the Devil have been moving in mysterious ways,” said Bob Russell, a LibDem MP among those proposing the motion.  “What is even stranger is that this motion was tabled last night when MPs were debating blasphemy,” he added.

The motion says “That this House calls for the disestablishment of the Church of England” which would mean an end to the formal link between Church and State in England — embodied in the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who is both head of state and head of the Church of England and the presence of bishops sitting in the House of Lords.

The number 666 is referred to in the Book of Revelation: “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred, three score and six.” (Rev 13:18)

“It is incredible that a motion like this should have, by chance, acquired this significant number,” said Russell.

By chance?  Hmm.  The Lord Almighty is trying to tell those stupid, proud, arrogant, fallible Members of Parliament something about the holiness of His name, or about His sovereignty over this United Kingdom, or about His ability to intervene in the affairs of men.  But will they listen?

‘Destroy Blasphemous Statue’ Jewish Art Collector Urged

0

A prominent Jewish art collector has been urged to withdraw and destroy a blasphemous statue of Jesus Christ currently on display in Gateshead.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, a Christian prayer and lobby group, wrote to Anita Zabludowicz, wife of Chaim (Poju) Zabludowicz, on Monday 7th January to make the suggestion. There has been no reply.

The foot-high statue, by Chinese artist Terence Koh, features Jesus Christ in a traditional pose but with an erection, and is a central part of the Zabludowicz Collection currently on show at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

The piece has become the focus of a storm of protest with outrage expressed by Christians on Tyneside and now across the UK. But the involvement of such a prominent member of the Jewish community has led Stephen Green also to write to the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, and to Mr Henry Grunwald, QC, the President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, asking them to condemn the Baltic Centre.

Businessman Poju Zabludowicz, who was born in Finland, is chairman of the British Israel Communications and Research Centre, a fellow director of the Jewish Activities Committee of the Jewish Leadership Council with Mr Grunwald and a fellow patron of the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust with the Chief Rabbi.

Terence Koh was born in Beijing, where the Chinese authorities are continuing their persecution of the Christian Church.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘It is particularly chilling that a Chinese artist should create such a sculpture, while the Chinese authorities are doing everything they can to oppress the Christian Church in China, imprisoning and torturing pastors for their faith in the very Jesus Christ Koh is humiliating. Koh is supporting the Chinese atheist regime and laughing at his countrymen persecuted for their faith from the comfort of his home in New York.

‘Koh has previously exhibited work with a pornographic theme, so there must be a lot going on his mind and his life which, ironically, badly needs the saving and healing grace of Jesus Christ.

‘However, I am hurt and disappointed that it is a Jewish art collector who has not only bought such an indecent, blasphemous and offensive statue of the Lord Jesus Christ from Koh, but has allowed it to go on show. Only last year I drove 250 miles to deliver clothing for Jewish relief charities. Christian Voice is a strong supporter of the state of Israel, imperfect as it is. Those of us Christians who honour the Jewish roots of our Christian faith and the place of Israel in God’s purpose will be dismayed to see such disrespect of our faith from such prominent members of the Jewish community.

‘In fact, I am astounded, and had to search carefully for the words with which to express my outrage on our website. As it is, I have already had an anti-Semitic email from someone whose support true Christians neither want nor need. Even discounting that, the actions of Anita Zabludowicz do nothing to help Jewish/Christian relations.

‘Back in 2005, the Chief Rabbi lectured on “How to build a culture of respect”. He spoke of the Christian and Jewish communities feeling “on the defensive” and “bruised”. In February 2006, he asked on the BBC: “Can we learn to respect what others hold holy?”

‘If these are to be more than just words, he and Henry Grunwald must speak out against this highly offensive and gratuitous insult to Jesus Christ and to the Christian community, and Anita Zabludowicz must withdraw this blasphemous piece before the exhibition of her collection ends on 20th January and apologise for the offence caused.

‘But I really feel she should go further than that. The thought that a prominent Jewish personality and wife of a Jewish billionaire personally takes pleasure in seeing the Lord Jesus Christ blasphemed, humiliated and vilified is not one Christians want to entertain. So I urge her to give an immediate undertaking to destroy the statue.’

Repeal of blasphemy law

Sir – In the light of the widespread outrage at the conviction of the British teacher for blasphemy in Sudan over the name of a teddy bear is it not time to repeal our own blasphemy law?

The ancient common law of blasphemous libel purports to protect beliefs rather than people or communities. Most religious commentators are of the view that the Almighty does not need the “protection” of such a law.

We are representatives of religious, secular, legal and artistic opinion in this country and share the view that the blasphemy offence serves no useful purpose. Yet it allows partisan organisations or well-funded individuals to try to censor broadcasters or intimidate small theatres, print media or publishers.

Far from protecting public order – for which other laws are more suited – it damages social cohesion.

It is discriminatory in that it only covers attacks on Christianity and Church of England tenets and thus engenders an expectation among other religions that their sensibilities should also be protected by the criminal law (as with the attempt to charge Salman Rushdie) and a sense of grievance among minority religions that they do not benefit from their own version of such a law.

As the Law Commission acknowledged in 1985, when it recommended repeal, it is uncertain in scope, but lack of intention is no defence, and the law is unlimited in penalty.

This, together with its chilling effect on free expression and its discriminatory impact, leaves it in clear breach of human rights law. In the end, no one is likely to be convicted under it.

The Church of England no longer opposes its abolition on principle and the Government has given no principled reason to defend its retention.

We call on MPs to support the amendment proposed by Evan Harris, Frank Dobson and David Wilshire tomorrow to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill and on the Government – which rightly criticises countries like Sudan for their blasphemy laws – to give it a fair wind.

Blasphemy Law ‘Maintains Respect For the Sacred’

0

The leader of a Christian prayer and lobby group has written to the Daily Telegraph in answer to a letter by more than a dozen campaigning secularists and two retired bishops, published today, calling for abolition of the blasphemy law.

TEXT OF PUBLISHED LETTER AND SIGNATORIES

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, is seeking to bring a private prosecution for blasphemy in the case of Jerry Springer the Opera against the Director General of the BBC and the show’s producer. Unsurprisingly, the author and director of Jerry Springer the Opera was among the signatories of the Telegraph letter as were Philip Pullman and Richard Dawkins.

The letter was published on the eve of a debate on an amendment to abolish the law against blasphemy to be moved tomorrow Wednesday 9th January in the House of Commons by Evan Harris MP, an Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society – as were no fewer than eight signatories of the Telegraph letter.

Stephen Green said today:

“The correspondents are wrong to say the blasphemy law ‘purports to protect beliefs’. ‘His Dark Materials’ and ‘The God Delusion’ have been published, both criticising Christian beliefs, without falling foul of it. No, the blasphemy law seeks primarily to maintain simple respect for Almighty God, Jesus Christ and the Bible.

“Curiously, it is always the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who is the target of blaspheming poets, playwrights and artists. This was true in the Gay News poem (the most recent successful prosecution for blasphemy) it was true in Jerry Springer the Opera, which is still in the courts, and it is true in the latest case, Terence Koh’s statue currently on display in Gateshead.

“It is not the law against blasphemy which damages social cohesion, it is the lack of any civilised standards of decency, restraint, respect and consideration in the world of the arts. What the Telegraph’s correspondents call ‘freedom of expression’ the rest of us too often have to describe as obscene, blasphemous, offensive, inhuman, pornographic, degrading or just plain crass.

“Of course the law against blasphemy discriminates in favour of Christianity. That is because historically, culturally and constitutionally, the United Kingdom is a Christian country, as Professor Dawkins himself conceded only last month.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7136682.stm  There can be no expectation from the followers of other faiths that their religions will be protected. The attempt to prosecute Salman Rushdie under the blasphemy laws failed, inevitably and rightly so.

“That being said, the existence of the blasphemy law should engender a proper respect for the sacred and so provide an umbrella of protection for the deeply-held religious beliefs of others. Respect for others comes, as Jesus Christ said in His parable of the unjust judge, from respect for God. God may not need the protection of such a law, but the social fabric of our society clearly does. And the recognition that God ‘can take care of Himself’ should fill us with holy fear, not the desire to humiliate His name.

“Dragging up the partisan Law Commission in support hardly helps the atheist case, nor does the illogicality of saying that no-one will be convicted under the blasphemy law, but that its existence is in breach of human rights law. On the latter point, that is the opposite of what the European Court of Human Rights has actually held (in Wingrove and Preminger), and as to whether anyone will be convicted, let’s wait and see, shall we?

“As the Bishop of Rochester said at the weekend, we need to affirm the Christian roots of British society. It is precisely the spiritual weakness of secularism with its multiculturalist (for which read anti-Christian) philosophy which has opened the door to Muslim ambition to turn this country, slowly but relentlessly, into an Islamic state. Only Christianity has the spiritual muscle to resist such a force, but we need to start standing up for Christianity, for God, Jesus Christ and the Bible, before it becomes illegal to do so.”

Blasphemous Statue on Show in Gateshead

1

As the Chinese authorities continue their persecution of the Christian Church, a statue by a Chinese artist attacking Jesus Christ is on show in the North-East of England.

The statue by Terence Koh, who was born in Beijing , but now lives in New York, is part of a collection owned by Newcastle-born Anita Zabludowicz which is being exhibited until 20th January at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

The 1ft-high depiction of Christ with an erection is the central figure in the exhibition.

Koh is supporting the Chinese atheist regime from the comfort of his home in New York and spitting in the face of his countrymen persecuted for their faith.

‘Koh has previously exhibited work with a pornographic theme, so there must be a lot going on his mind and his life which, ironically, badly needs the saving and healing grace of Jesus Christ.’

Anita Zabludowicz is a well-known collector in the arts world.  She is married to Chaim Zabludowicz, also known as ‘Poju’, the billionaire Finnish-born businessman and gaming magnate.

Stephen Green went on: ‘Chaim Zabludowicz is also chairman of the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre, a pro-Israel pressure group.  Both Chaim and Anita are well-known in Jewish circles.  Christians, many of whom support the state of Israel not least in prayer, would normally expect more respect for their faith from those of the cultivated olive tree (Rom 11:13-24).

‘The exhibition also reveals all that is wrong with the arts in the United Kingdom . Parliament is debating whether to allow the creation of human/animal embryos, we are killing our own children by abortion, what passes for our civilisation is becoming daily more crass, sexualised, selfish and disrespectful, schools and families are failing to teach children eternal standards of behaviour, family breakdown is causing misery and contributing, along with drunkenness and drug-taking, to crime.  The police detection rate in Gateshead is only 30%, while violent crime there is up 8.6%. A culture of lies and spin permeates and degrades politics and our troops are dying in illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

‘Yet with all these legitimate targets for the arts to expose, all the Director of the Baltic Centre, Peter Doroshenko, and Chairman Sir Ian Wrigglesworth seem able to do is put on an exhibition ridiculing the Son of God who alone can redeem sinners and transform our society from evil to righteousness.

‘The Baltic Centre project itself cost £46 million of taxpayers’ money. £34 million came from the National Lottery via the Arts Council and the rest was provided by various public bodies including Gateshead Council.

‘The Centre costs £3 million per year to run, of which half is being squandered by the Lottery.  From the Baltic Centre website, it seems a lot of that money goes on parties for arts insiders.

‘Evil displays like this only happen because the Church in our land allows them to.  I hope and pray there will be an outcry from the Church in Gateshead and across the UK which will cause all involved to examine their own lives and repent of their sins.’

High Court Springer Verdict ‘Will be Appealed’

A High Court verdict to refuse a private prosecution for blasphemy in the case of Jerry Springer the Opera will be appealed, it was announced today.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, is seeking to prosecute Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, and Jonathan Thoday of producers Avalon, following a theatre tour of the show from January to July 2006 and its transmission on BBC2 in January 2005.

In January this year, Stephen Green asked Horseferry Road Magistrates Court to issue a summons for a private prosecution against Messrs Thompson and Thoday but District Judge Caroline Tubbs refused the application. The High Court action was to seek judicial review of the District Judge’s decision.

But Lord Justice Hughes and Mr Justice Collins refused to overturn the District Judge’s decision, saying the Theatres Act 1968 and the Broadcasting Act 1990 allow blasphemy to be performed and transmitted. They also said that Jerry Springer the Opera was not blasphemous, but was an attack not on Christianity but on television chat-shows. In that, they disagreed with Mr Justice Underhill ‘s preliminary view, which was to grant leave for judicial review in the first place.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘We must appeal this disappointing decision. The law as the Court has interpreted it now gives carte blanche to broadcasters and theatre companies to blaspheme, while the press still may not. That cannot be logical, let alone right. In effect the guts of the law against blasphemy have been torn out, and not even by Parliament, but by judicial decree. I believe the judges have wrongly interpreted

‘I have heard the line that Jerry Springer the Opera was a satire on intrusive and exploitative TV before. The BBC are repeating it in a somewhat self-serving press release this morning. In Act 1 of the show that argument might just be made. But in Act 2 we had the character of Jesus Christ in what appeared to be a nappy, identified as a coprophiliac pervert, saying He was a “little bit gay”. We had Mary His mother described as being “raped by an angel” and Jesus asked ‘Where were you when the condom split?” The character of Jesus swore and hit people, the sacrament of Holy Communion was ridiculed and so were Christ’s wounds on the Cross. Almighty God was presented as ineffectual and needing a shoulder to cry on. Finally, Jesus was told by Jerry Springer to “Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.” Are we seriously being asked that all of that is an attack on TV and not an attack on Christianity, when the show’s author, militant atheist Stewart Lee himself, described it as a ‘blasphemy musical’ in an article in the Sunday Herald on 10th October 2004.

‘So we have one High Court judge say there was an arguable case in our favour, and now two have gone the other way. I hope and pray the House of Lords will uphold the totality of the law against blasphemy and allow the prosecution to proceed. If they do not, then a bit more common decency, courtesy and respect, which is part of what it means to be civilised, let alone British, will have been thrown away.’

READ: Exod 20:7; Psalm 2:1-12; Prov 3:1-6; Isa 52:5; Luke 18:1-8; John 3:18-20, 7:24; Phil 2:5-11; Col 3:8.

PRAY: For our appeal to the House of Lords.  Pray for wisdom in framing the appeal and for a favourable decision.  Pray that our Lord’s Holy name will be upheld in this United Kingdom .  From the Lord’s prayer: ‘Hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’
