Christian Group in Death Penalty Call

8

A Christian group is calling for the restoration of the death penalty for those convicted on what it describes as ‘overwhelming evidence’.

The call comes as the Government has announced plans to reform the law on homicide. There was also criticism of the defence of being ‘seriously wronged’, which will exclude adultery.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘In the Christian understanding, upon which our laws are or should be based, the death penalty was given to mankind for perpetuity under God’s covenant with Noah. That covenant was sealed with the sign of the rainbow (Genesis 9:12-13).

‘The Bible verse says: “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed” (Genesis 9:6, AV) and it goes on to explain why: “for in the image of God made He man.”

‘When we lock someone up for between 10 or 13 years, which is the average for murder today, we are saying that such a term is all that an innocent human life is worth. That perception permeates through all society. Justice is not done by ‘life imprisonment’.

‘In fact we set the value of a human life even lower. In the sixties, with the abolition of the death penalty in 1965 and the Abortion Act 1967, our politicians took away the death penalty from the guilty, by the state, where it belongs, and imposed it upon the innocent, within the family, where it does not.

‘The result is a society with no compassion for the victims of crime and their families or for the weaker members of society. We see this today in the callous nature of crimes committed by teenagers on each other and in the increasing brutality of Britain .

‘The death penalty should not be available to judges for all convicted murderers, just for those convicted by overwhelming evidence: that is on the testimony of two or three eye-witnesses, or the equivalent in forensics.

‘I would argue that lower-grade convictions, those secured on ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ evidence, should not be allowed at all. The imprisonment of innocent people like Angela Cannings, Trupti Patel and the late Sally Clark, who were wrongly convicted of killing their children on no evidence at all, just the opinion of Sir Roy Meadow, or the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six, is a life-destroying punishment in itself.

‘It has historically been held that it is preferable for a hundred guilty persons to walk free then for one innocent person to be convicted. If convictions on weaker rules of evidence were to be abolished, and we could be certain that murderers were properly convicted, the mandatory life sentence for murder could be abolished, as Geoffrey Robertson QC has argued, but only to be replaced by the death penalty, to which he is of course opposed.

‘But until rules of evidence can be changed, a two-tier penalty based on the soundness of conviction would be a first step reflecting the demands of justice.

‘The Governments’ proposed ‘seriously wronged’ defence will not command public confidence, as most people would agree that the commission of adultery is a serious wrong; yet that is to be specifically excluded. However, it would be right to abolish the defence of diminished responsibility – no-one has the right to diminish another’s responsibility. But we do not find ‘medical conditions’ reducing a man’s culpability for murder in the scriptures either. It all just shows how wrong we can get it when man presumes to make laws which should be made by Almighty God.’

Cameron Slammed For Sharia Joke

2

Conservative leader David Cameron has been criticised by a Christian group over his joke that he is ‘considering introducing Sharia law for bicycle theft’.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘We have had the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Chief Justice saying aspects of Sharia law could be introduced into civil proceedings. That was bad enough, but Cameron has gone one further, by suggesting that Sharia principles could be of value in our criminal law.

‘He may have thought it was a joke, but cutting peoples’ hands cut off for theft isn’t funny.

‘The idea of replacing our Judeo-Christian law with Islamic Sharia law isn’t funny either.

‘Just two weeks ago, I was debating with Muslims in Queen Mary’s University of London , opposing the motion: ‘This House believes that Islam is the only intellectual and Political challenge to Liberal Secularism.’

‘These guys were moderate Muslims, but they were adamant that only Islam held the answer for the problems of British society.

‘Now the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition has encouraged that idea and raised expectations amongst Muslims that their criminal legal system could be of value in Britain .

‘David Cameron ought to go away and study what is happening in his own country. It is good that he has in a sense been ‘mugged by reality’ over crime but he is completely out of touch with the realities of Islamic ambition in this land.’

Christians Protest Over Jesus Slur

0

Christians mounted a protest this morning against an article in the South Wales Echo, which was also published on the paper’s website in association with Cardiff ‘s leading firm of solicitors.

The article, by Dan O’Neill, was published in the South Wales Echo on Wednesday 16th July and then put up on the Echo website where it was published ‘in association with’ Hugh James.

In the article, O’Neill firstly declares that the Bible is not the word of God. It was written by ‘a wild-eyed Bronze Age nomad’, he rages.

Then, in a remarkable display of ignorance of the social mores of the Holy Land in the 1st Century, he remarks that Jesus Christ could be accused of homosexuality because the Apostles were all male.

Not content with that, he says it is ‘suspicious’ that Jesus ‘picks up small boys and girls and puts his hands upon them.’ From there, the piece descends into a bigoted rant against Christianity.

This morning, a group of Christians gave leaflets about the matter to staff going in to the Hugh James offices in St Mary’s Street , Cardiff and met Rachel Rhys-Jones, who is in charge of the firm’s marketing.

From there, they moved to the office of Media Wales where they occupied the reception area, singing hymns and praying out loud before meeting with Simon Farrington, one of the Managing Editors.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said afterwards:

‘The senior partner at Hugh James, Gareth Williams, bears ultimate responsibility for allowing his firm to be associated with such a disgraceful attack on the Christian Faith by Media Wales.

‘He should pull his firm’s support for the South Wales Echo, apologise to his firm’s Christian staff and clients and cancel any further association with Media Wales.

We made it very clear to Simon Farrington that Media Wales should immediately take down the article from the web and publish an apology in the paper and on the web. He should also sack Dan O’Neill, whose column long since ceased to have any relevance to Wales in the 21st century.

‘Media Wales are moving offices at the moment, with their current premises scheduled for demolition. If Mohammed had been called a homosexual and a paedophile in their paper, they would not have to wait for the demolition teams to arrive. But they think they can attack the Christian faith with impunity. Today we showed that even though we would never resort to violence, Christians can mount a swift and effective witness against evil. We now look forward to a positive and gracious response from Media Wales.’

BBC Go For Pound of Flesh Over Springer Costs

0

The BBC have just sent a bailiff to serve a statutory demand on Christian activist Stephen Green in respect of Mark Thompson’s costs of £55,000 in the Jerry Springer the Opera case.

The demand could see Green made bankrupt and homeless.

The High Court ruled last December that Stephen Green could not prosecute Mark Thompson, the Director General of the BBC, and Jonathan Thoday of Avalon over the BBC2 broadcast of Jerry Springer the Opera and its subsequent theatre tour. The Court ordered costs against him.

Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday were awarded costs totalling £90,000 against Green, who is the National Director of the prayer and lobby group Christian Voice. The BBC’s solicitors were awarded £55,000 and Olswangs Solicitors, who acted for Thoday, got an order for £35,000.

The costs order is better than it could have been; the BBC originally demanded almost £78,000 after instructing David Pannick QC, probably the most expensive barrister they could find, while Thoday wanted over £58,000.

Last month, Stephen Green wrote to both Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday inviting them to waive their costs in the interests of goodwill and justice. The appeal to the better nature of Thompson has fallen on deaf ears.

Thompson screened Jerry Springer the Opera on BBC2 in January 2005, attracting 55,000 protests, and the show itself ran at the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden before Avalon sent it on a badly-attended tour in 2006 over which Thoday said he lost £500,000.

Stephen Green, who brought the action over Jerry Springer the Opera in his own name, said today:

‘Jerry Springer the Opera portrayed Jesus Christ as a nappy-wearing sexual deviant, who said he was ‘a little bit gay’. It called Mary a rape victim, said the birth of Jesus was because ‘the condom split’, ridiculed His wounds on the cross and the sacrament of Holy Communion, had God as an ineffectual old man who needed guidance from Jerry Springer and finished up with Springer as a counterfeit saviour of mankind who told Jesus to “Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.”

‘It should be enough for Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday that they got away with blasphemy, insulting God and the Lord Jesus Christ, at least in this life. For these rich, powerful men to pursue me into the bankruptcy courts over money I don’t have would be vindictive.’

Both sets of solicitors have also threatened to chase the donors who gave the money for the original action, but it is far from clear that a court would allow that. Even if it did, Green is adamant that he will protect the donors’ identity, even if that puts him in contempt of court.

‘I should go to prison rather than reveal their names, even if I could remember who they were,’ he told both Thompson and Thoday.

The BBC is currently wasting £18million a year on a Gaelic TV channel, £150million on BBC3 and BBC4, its well-heeled bosses spent millions changing their logo and they have just splashed out £550,000 on a completely unnecessary rebrand of the News. They have been in the public eye recently over the obscene sums of money they are paying presenters, with Jonathan Ross getting £18million for a three year contract. The BBC accounts show Mark Thompson was paid over £800,000 last year, an amount per year almost 25 times as much as Green is worth.

Stephen Green continued: ‘Mark Thompson could easily pay his own costs out of his inflated salary, and the BBC certainly would never notice the odd £55,000 alongside the money they squander on a daily basis.

‘I do not have the money anyway, and will end up bankrupt and homeless if Thompson continues with to try to enforce these punitive costs.’

Politicians ‘clueless’ about Knife Crime

1

The leader of a Christian prayer and lobby group has accused politicians of being ‘clueless’ about stopping knife and gun crime.

The accusation comes as Home Secretary Jacqui Smith proposes to march offenders around Accident and Emergency wards. The Sunday Telegraph has revealed that 56 people were stabbed or robbed at knifepoint every day last year, with the problem accelerating as knives become ‘cool’ to carry and use.

Six people died in knife attacks in 24 hours last week, forcing an embarrassing message of reassurance from Scotland Yard. The head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Ian Blair, was summoned to Chequers over the weekend for a meeting with Gordon Brown. 42 teenagers have been murdered in Britain this year, 20 of them in London .

Politicians are urging more use of metal detectors in clubs, whilst Jacqui Smith’s plan includes pushing the victims of knife crime and their relatives to meet knife thugs.

But critics of the plan have said there is no quick fix. Harry Fletcher of the National Association of Probation Officers, called the plan ‘a damp squib’ while broadcaster June Sarpong told Andrew Marr this morning that the problem was a lack of morality.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘There are some areas, and they include the human heart, which the law is powerless to reach. A lack of an internal moral compass, which stems from a lack of the fear of God, means the criminal law only comes along afterwards, when the damage has been done. But if the law does not then administer true restorative justice, no-one will fear the law either. On top of that, society and the individuals within it can be further corrupted over generations by bad social legislation.

‘There are no quick fixes to solve the problem of increasing crime. Britain is becoming daily more brutal because for the last forty years, a godless elite have been destroying the Christian foundations of our society. Rebuilding that will not happen overnight, and only then if the Church rediscovers some courage in Christ’s statements of righteousness.

‘If we track back the roots of knife and gun crime, we have to confront the government-inspired collapse of family life, Parliament’s abolition of a proportionate penalty for murder, and the coarsening of our society, for which politicians and celebrities alike share responsibility.

‘The collapse of family life is down to the legalisation of divorce on demand in the 60s coupled with the state encouraging teenagers to have sex. These two anti-Christian measures taken together mean only around half of children are now growing up with their father.

‘Schools are also working behind parents’ backs, handing our contraceptives and arranging abortions to children for whom they would need the parents’ permission to give an aspirin. Parliament has said fathers aren’t even needed in families. How is a mother on her own supposed to restrain an adolescent son?

‘The absence of a father in today’s families is why young people look to the gang not the family for their sense of identity, as Barbara Wilding, Chief Constable of South Wales Police, said just two weeks ago. In addition, legislators have confused parents about how far they can discipline their children, while social services are only too keen to pounce and disrupt loving families if a child for some reason denounces its parents for the odd smack.

‘With the abolition of the death penalty in 1965 and the Abortion Act 1967, Parliament removed the death penalty from the guilty, by the state, where it belongs, and imposed it on the innocent within the family, where it does not. With those two measures, our politicians said innocent human life, made in the image of God, had no value. Restorative justice is God’s idea, but only the death penalty, for those found guilty on the evidence of eyewitnesses, can do justice for the victim of murder. Being locked up for 10 or 11 years is not justice. Our lack of compassion for the victims of crime is generating more of them.

‘And the more you increase penalties for those carrying knives or guns, the more you decrease the differential between that and murder itself, if the penalty for the latter is just a spell in prison. Having draconian penalties for carrying weapons can increase the use of them. On top of that, our ban on handguns has resulted in more of them on the streets, in the hands of criminals who are only too ready to use them.

‘Certainly our culture, especially in film or video games, is glorifying violence and the use of weapons. Drunkenness and the use of foul language coarsen and demean us all. Celebrities and royalty bear a huge responsibility for the growing lack of respect in our increasingly dysfunctional society. Recently, Parliament, thinking there was not quite enough disrespect already, and knowing that regard for man begins with the fear of God, abolished our laws against blasphemy.

‘We live in a society where all moral boundaries have been or are being overturned. Those at the top, politicians, celebrities, even chief police officers, set lamentable standards of honesty and decency. The irony of Gordon Brown demanding action from Sir Ian Blair is that Sir Ian himself has such a low regard for innocent human life that he refused to take responsibility for the death of an innocent man shot by his force at Stockwell Tube. Gordon Brown himself was part of a government which sent our troops to die in two illegal wars and is keeping them in Basra , according to the Colonel there, so Iraqi children can play football.

‘The Opposition in Parliament is part of the problem. Whilst David Cameron has argued for society to maintain standards of right and wrong, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, showed that he has no idea of right and wrong by parading at the head of the London ‘Gay Pride’ march of perversion last Saturday week.

‘You cannot pick and mix morality. There is an American bishop arguing in Putney tonight for the full acceptance of an activity Almighty God considers an abomination. A church which sets God’s law and His institution of marriage at naught has forfeited its right to uphold any other Christian principle.

‘Both Church and State in our broken land must return to seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, as the Lord Jesus said (Matt 6:33). Only then will everything else fall into place. We call that ‘national repentance’ and in Christian Voice we are praying for it to happen, by God’s grace. In the absence of repentance, from top to bottom in this United Kingdom , we can expect violent crime to keep increasing and the murder count to keep notching up. In short, without Christ, our politicians are clueless.’

Christian Voice Director Faces Bankruptcy

1

A Christian activist who tried to charge the BBC’s Director General and the producer of Jerry Springer the Opera with blasphemy is facing bankruptcy over a ‘grotesque’ costs order.

In a hearing a fortnight ago, Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday were awarded costs totalling £90,000 against Green, who is the National Director of the prayer and lobby group Christian Voice.

The money is due to be paid today, but Stephen Green doesn’t have it.

He has written to both Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday inviting them to waive their costs in the interests of goodwill and justice.

Mark Thompson’s own salary was £609,000 in 2005/6 and must be around £750,000 now. Added to that, the solicitors in the BBC’s legal department are on the payroll anyway; the BBC is not even out of pocket in that regard.

Avalon represents entertainers such as Frank Skinner, David Badiel, Harry Hill and Al Murray. Its TV production arm has supplied shows involving most of its own entertainers to TV channels.

Stephen Green continued: ‘Mark Thompson earns well over twenty times as much in a year as I am worth. He could pay his own costs out of his inflated salary, and the BBC certainly would never notice the odd £55,000 alongside the money they squander on a daily basis.

‘Jonathan Thoday can easily afford to waive his costs as well. He lost £500,000 over the failed tour of Jerry Springer the Opera in 2006, and didn’t bat an eyelid, so he isn’t exactly short of money either. Seven years ago, in 2001, he featured in the Independent’s Media Rich List, with a personal fortune estimated then at £12million.

‘Quite simply, I do not have the money anyway, and will be certainly end up bankrupt if Thompson and Thoday decide to enforce these punitive costs.’

Human Rights barrister Paul Diamond said the case raises issues under the European Convention of Human Rights about access to the courts.

Stephen Green concluded: ‘How are people with limited means expected to bring actions of public importance against public bodies or wealthy people? It is outrageous that a public-spirited individual should be dissuaded from upholding standards of public decency in a public body because of the fear of adverse, grotesque costs orders.’

NOTE for editors: The European Court have previously held that in certain circumstances legal aid must be granted to individuals to enable them to pursue their case. In the same way an impecunious claimant should not be subject to an adverse costs order which would deter other individuals from access to the courts where it as reasonable to have legal representation and the other party is a public body.

The First Woman Dies – And For What?

The death of Cpl Sarah Bryant in Afghanistan has again thrown the Armed Forces’ policy of allowing women to serve in action into stark relief.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said tonight:

‘It has been rightly said that any country which asks its women to fight for it is not worth fighting for. It was bad enough that hundreds of young British men have been sacrificed to be killed or maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan , but now a young wife has had her life taken.

‘If we have some strategic interest in Afghanistan , let the politicians tell us what it is. If it is an oil pipeline, let’s hear it. And if bringing ‘Democracy’ to far-away places with strange-sounding names is in our strategic interest, why don’t they explain how, exactly?

‘If it is just ‘Democracy’ for its own sake, why aren’t we extending our generosity to Zimbabwe, a Commonwealth country where we actually have friends and relations? In fact, why don’t we deploy all the troops at present being viewed as an occupying army in Iraq and Afghanistan into Zimbabwe, where they would be rightly seen as liberators?’

School Sex Clinics Betray Young

The Government plan to roll out school sex clinics after a pilot in schools in Bristol . A BBC web report named three professionals with vested interests in teen sex supporting it, and one schoolgirl.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/health/newsid_7446000/7446370.stm

This morning, Lutterworth Grammar School was reported as having handed out 345 morning-after pills behind parents’ backs:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1026600/

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘It won’t be hard to find school children who will welcome this idea, and the teen sex industry will be loving it.

‘It is both irresponsible and arrogant of schools to interfere in children’s intimate lives and to encourage them into illicit premature sexual activity.

‘The sort of peculiar people who get a buzz out of encouraging school children into adolescent sex should not be allowed anywhere near them.

‘Schools have no business bringing in sexual health workers, who don’t know the children and care about them even less, to go behind parents’ backs. There was an outcry when Melissa Smith had an abortion in Mansfield with out the knowledge of her mother, who had to pick up the pieces afterwards. Yet Melissa would not have been allowed to take a paracetamol without her mother’s say-so. How many other children are being betrayed by schools like Melissa was?

‘Studies show that teenagers are notoriously bad at using contraceptives properly. And even if they do, condoms are pathetic at preventing sexually-transmitted diseases. We shall see an increase in teenage pregnancies and abortions unless the morning-after pill gets the government out of that hole, and it is certain that more young people, boys as well as girls, will end up infertile or bearing life-long genital diseases.

‘As the Governments’ targets all centre around pregnancy, no-one in the corridors of power cares if children become infertile through diseases like Chlamydia. They may even welcome it.

‘There is a vast industry now dependent upon getting teenagers using contraceptives. There is no money in chastity. Saving sex for marriage is the one message children need to hear and the only one the Government refuses to bring.

‘It is odd the way we devote even more effort teaching children to say ‘yes’ to sex than we do to getting them to say ‘no’ to smoking and drugs.

‘This policy will leave misery in its wake.’

Muslim Police Defied in Gospel Outreach

0

Well over twelve hundred leaflets explaining the Christian faith were given out in the Alum Rock suburb of Birmingham yesterday morning, together with hundreds of Christian booklets in Urdu.

Alum Rock is predominantly Muslim, with a population estimated at 90% Pakistani origin.

Two Christian preachers were told to leave the area earlier this year by Naeem Naguthney, a Muslim activist working as a Police Community Support Officer for West Midlands Police. Rev Joseph Abraham and Arthur Cunningham have now launched legal action.

Naguthney helped set up the West Midlands branch of the National Association of Muslim Police Officers which is calling for Muslim police to be involved in anti-terror operations.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7215431.stm

The response of Christian Voice to was yesterday’s street witness. With the exception of Christian Voice National Director Stephen Green, all the other twenty Christians were from Birmingham, with local churches well represented.

Other local churches had a stall on the Alum Rock Road.

Christian Voice is known for its peaceful street witness events. The group’s evangelism dogged the 2006 theatre tour of Jerry Springer the Opera, leading to financial disaster for the blasphemous show, and Christian Voice has been prominent at homosexual events. Yesterday’s event was the first-ever outreach into a Muslim area.

http://www.birminghammail.net/news/birmingham-news/2008/06/16

Stephen Green said:

‘Despite the crude attempt to create a Muslim ‘no-go’ area for Christians, we found people were more than willing to take literature. Most of us stayed on Alum Rock Road , but a couple of brothers went door-knocking down College Road . There were some good conversations. but as the average Muslim is said to take seven years to convert to Christianity, and given the severe impact of conversion on family, job prospects in the community, and even life itself, there were understandably no dramatic conversions.

‘Muslims like to challenge us on doctrine as well, so we tried to clear up some misconceptions about the divinity of Jesus Christ and the nature of the Trinity.

‘As the Koran affirms the authority of the Bible, it is difficult for Muslims to say they ‘respect’ Jesus Christ after his obvious declarations of divinity in the Gospels. And that goes for others as well. Attempts to pigeon-hole Jesus as a ‘prophet’ or ‘great moral teacher’ fall in the face of him forgiving people their sins, claiming to be one with the eternal Father, and claiming to have the power to lay down his life and take it up again. Either Jesus was a fraud, or God. You can’t just ‘respect’ Him.

‘All credit to the local churches for coming out and I am delighted they recognised the sincerity of our intentions and the sensitivity of the way we went about it. God must take the glory for any good that was done.

‘As for the National Association of Muslim Police, they are now on notice that if any of them try to misuse their position to try to create Muslim ghettos or bar the Gospel again, we shall be there, preaching the love of God and the certainty of the forgiveness of sins by the precious blood of the incarnate, crucified, risen, ascended, glorified Lord Jesus Christ.’

TEXT FROM LEAFLET

Text of a leaflet given out to Muslims at Alum Rock , Birmingham (UK) on Saturday 14th June 2008.  (‘A Salaam Alechem’ is a rough English translation of an Arabic expression meaning ‘Peace to you’.)

WHAT’S WRONG WITH BRITAIN ?

A Salaam Alechem. Britain today is in decline. Secularist politicians have passed laws against Christianity and the Bible to encourage sin and depravity. We see the effects all around us.

In 1967, Parliament passed the Sexual Offences Act, which legalised homosexuality in opposition to the righteous laws of God, leading to today’s ‘Gay Pride’ exhibitions of perversion in our cities. Birmingham ‘s was even supported by the police!

The 1960’s also saw laws to allow divorce for any reason, which Jesus Christ in the Bible specifically ruled against (Matt 19:3-9). Letting families break up and encouraging teenagers into illicit sex means half a generation of children now grow up with no contact with their father.

Lack of morality led to crime

The destruction of the family, which the powerful Elite brought to pass, has led to young people looking to their peer group for a moral compass and finding nothing but a ‘do what you want’ idea in which drunkenness, drugs and fornication are paraded night by night on the streets.

We can all see how the lack of morality spawned by the lack of fathers has led to crime and antisocial behaviour. Prisons are full of young men from broken families.

In killings we reap what we have sown

At the time of writing, 16 young people had been killed this year in London alone. In the West Midlands , there are 40 knife crimes a week. Why is there such contempt for life? Well, the Bible says ‘As a man sows, so shall he reap’ (Gal 6:7).

In the 1960’s, with the abolition of the death penalty and then the Abortion Act, Parliament took away the death penalty from the guilty, by the state, where it belongs, and imposed it on the innocent baby in the womb, in the family, where it does not.

In that way we devalued innocent human life, and the Torah says mankind is made in the image of God. Can we wonder why our young people now have no respect for the lives of others when we allow their brothers and sisters to be torn limb from limb in abortion clinics, ripped out from what should be the safest place on God’s earth? It is sowing – and reaping.

Our Christian Constitution

Who could tell from the way our politicians have behaved over the last fifty years, passing wicked anti-God laws that have brought misery in their wake, that our Queen promised at her coronation to ‘maintain the laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel’?

Who would ever guess she was given the Orb with a Cross from the Crown Jewels and told to ‘Remember that the whole earth is subject to the power and empire of Christ our Redeemer’? It would never occur to anyone from the way the Christian faith is trampled on today that Britain actually has a Christian constitution.

The Church should take some blame

Clearly the Church must shoulder a lot of blame for the state of Britain today. We have been too lax and lazy in the past. We have failed to stand up for Jesus Christ and the righteousness of the Bible. We have let down those from other lands who thought they were coming to a Christian country. We have left a moral vacuum.

No wonder Muslims say that Islam could do better than the secularism rife in Britain today. But Christians are now starting to stand up and be counted. Muslims will expect those who follow Christianity, the historic faith of these islands, to proclaim that we need to return to the Christian Faith and the Bible. And that is just what we say!

So what do Christians believe?

As Christian Voice is a Christian group, standing up for righteousness and for Jesus (Yeshua, Isa) you will expect us to tell you about our faith. Christians believe God is the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth. He is self-existent, the loving, divine intelligence behind all creation, including us. Since God created us, He needed to lay down the laws by which we should live. Jesus Christ (Christ means ‘Messiah’ or ‘Anointed of God’) said: ‘Keep the Commandments’: worship nothing and nobody except God, do not blaspheme, disrespect parents and those in authority, and do not commit murder, adultery, stealing, lying or envy.

We can’t keep Commandments!

The trouble is, we can’t live up to Jesus’s example or teaching, because we are only human. We have all done wrong by God’s standards, so we are all out of fellowship with God and destined for hell. God is loving and merciful. He wants fellowship with us. But as He is righteous and holy, our sin prevents it. How can a holy God forgive us all the wicked things we have done in our lives and bring us into His presence in heaven?

A bit of good news for a change

By being born of a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit in the person of Jesus, that’s how, born to die on the cross so we could be forgiven.

In Jesus, who did no wrong, God Himself died for us and rose again. God’s justice demands blood be shed for the forgiveness of sins. In His mercy and love for us He provided the only worthy sacrifice.

One day we shall all appear in the Court of Heaven. We shall all be guilty and deserving of punishment. But to those who believe in Christ, when sentence is passed, the Judge will say, ‘I have already paid the penalty for you myself.’ Because Jesus carried no burden of sin, he could take our sins on Himself and be our ransom. Us Christians know we are saved and forgiven. We are justified by the blood of Jesus. That is what sets us apart; not that we are better people, but that we are forgiven people. ‘The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord’ (Rom 6:23).

The Angel Gabriel gave the word

We believe Jesus was born of a virgin, Mary, just as the angel Gabriel said: ‘The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy one which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God’ (Luke 1:35). That is not to say that God begets as men do, but that the only way for a virgin to be with child was by the power of God.

It was also an angel who met the women at the tomb of Jesus three days after His crucifixion. He said: ‘I know ye seek Jesus who was crucified; he is not here, for he is risen as he said’ (Matt 28:5-6). The new life every Christian lives is the risen life of Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit by the love and grace of God.

‘I am the way’ says Jesus

Unlike any prophet, Jesus had power to lay down His life and power to take it up again. So the Bible says: ‘Neither is their salvation in any other; for their is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved’ (Acts 4:12) The first public words of Jesus were: ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye and believe the Gospel’ (Mark 1:15).

May God bless you and meet you in Jesus as you call out to Him for salvation and forgiveness.

Muslims to be offered therapy rather than prison

0

‘The Government’s plan to offer therapy to Muslim extremists instead of prosecution is criticised today by the leader of Christian prayer and lobby group.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice said today:

‘What extremist won’t sign up for therapy to escape prosecution for terrorism? The trouble is, the idea would have to use the techniques of the USSR to have a hope of success. Even then, Soviet-style brain-washing failed to crush all but a few of those Christians who fell foul of it. Even the Chinese find they cannot beat religion out of people, although that does not stop them trying. What hope has a well-meaning middle-aged lady and a cup of coffee against someone of deep Muslim convictions and a solid grounding in Islamic theology?  They will simply deceive the counsellors and carry on as normal.’

Muslim No-Go Area ‘will be challenged’

Christian Voice outreach to Alum Rock planned for
10am, Saturday 14th June 2008

The ejection of two Christian preachers from a suburb of Birmingham by West Midlands Police will now lead to a Gospel outreach by Christian Voice.

Members of the group, known for its peaceful street witness which led to financial disaster for Jerry Springer the Opera, will spend a couple of hours on Saturday week giving out Christian leaflets and sharing the Gospel with passers-by in Alum Rock, a predominantly Muslim area east of Birmingham city centre.

Americans Arthur Cunnimgham and Joseph Abraham were interrupted by Naeem Naguthney, a Muslim Police Community Support Officer, as they were speaking to Muslim youths about their beliefs.  He told them that converting Muslims to Christianity was a ‘hate crime’.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/2058935/Police.html

Naguthney is known as a Muslim activist. He took a leading part in the recent launch of the West Midlands branch of the National Association of Muslim Police, at which he read from the Koran.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1023483/You-preach-Bible-Muslim.html

It is alleged Naguthney told the two preachers: ‘You have been warned.  If you come back here and get beat up (sic), well, you have been warned.’  When he found out they were American, the men say he launched into a tirade about American foreign policy and became ‘aggressive and threatening’.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/ukcorrespondents/gospel_free_zone.htm

But Naguthney was wrong to portray the area as violent, according to local people, who have urged others not to feel wary of visiting the Birmingham suburb.  Following the conviction of Alum Rock resident Parviz Khan for terrorism, community leaders including Birmingham councillor Tariq Khan described Alum Rock as peaceful and law-abiding.  Barber Zahid Mahmmod said: “The area is very safe, and I don’t think people need to be worried about coming here.”

http://www.birminghammail.net/news/birmingham-news/2008/02/19/

West Midlands Police said: ‘The PCSO has been offered guidance about what constitutes a hate crime and advice on communication style.’  However, as Naguthney summoned two other officers, one of whom, a full constable, is said to have told the preachers not to return to the area, an anti-Christian attitude could be prevalent in the force.

In the past, there have been instances of policemen targeting Christian preacher over remarks critical of homosexuality or adultery; Alison Redmond-Bate was wrongfully arrested in Wakefield in 1997.  Harry Hammond was assaulted by homosexuals and then charged and convicted himself in 2001.  In 2005 at Tower Bridge John Banda was told to take down a sign urging people to repent by police threatening him with Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986

https://www.christianvoice.org.uk/Articles/38%20Zechariah%2001.doc

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, was arrested at a homosexual event in Cardiff in 2006 while handing out evangelistic leaflets.  He was charged with a public order offence, only for embarrassed crown prosecutors to drop the case.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/5388626.stm

But action against Christians by Muslim police employees appears to be a new development.

Stephen Green said today:

‘We don’t really need a reason for a Gospel outreach, as taking the Good News of Jesus Christ is a Gospel imperative, but this case has given us one anyway.  It is against the law for the Police to tell Christian preachers to shut up or move on, as the Redmond-Bate case established.  And the rule of law applies in Alum Rock, just as it does at Speakers’ Corner or any other part of this United Kingdom .’

The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, recently warned that it is hard for non-Muslims to live and work in some areas where radicals and clerics are trying to impose an Islamic character.  But Stephen Green says: ‘Here we have an instance where it is not local people turning an area into a Muslim ghetto, it is West Midlands Police.’

He continued: ‘The case also raises concerns about the association of Islam and the Police.  If people like Naguthney are using the British Police as a launching ground for Muslim activism, whether in the National Association of Muslim Police or in day-to-day police activities, then they should be expelled.

‘It is less than two years ago when the then Home Secretary John Reid was asked by Abu Izzadeen at a meeting in Leyton, East London : “How dare you come to a Muslim area when over 1,000 Muslims have been arrested?”  There was an outcry, but now we find a Muslim police employee, someone his Chief Constable probably regards as a ‘moderate’, clearly has the same mind-set as a convicted terrorist.’

West Midlands Police recently lost a libel action after they investigated and then reported the Channel 4 Dispatches  ‘Undercover Mosque’ programme to Ofcom because they said it quoted Muslim preachers out of context and ‘damaged community cohesion’.  Even after Ofcom ruled solidly against them, the West Midlands Assistant Chief Constable, Anil Patani, left a press release up on their website continuing to accuse the programme makers of distorting the words of the imans.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/may/15/channel4

Stephen Green concluded:  ‘By the grace of God, this no-go area for the Gospel will be challenged.  West Midlands Police Chief Constable Sir Paul Scott-Lee has an odd sense of humour creating a post of counter-terrorism and cohesion for Anil Patani to be in charge of.  But with people like that at the top, and with its tarnished record, we need to ask how far up West Midlands Police the peculiar bias to Islam demonstrated by the Dispatches affair and Naeem Naguthney’s attitude actually goes.’

Negotiating With Al-Qaeda is ‘Lunacy’

1

The leader of a Christian prayer and lobby group has reacted with disbelief to the statement by Sir Hugh Orde and Jonathan Powell that the UK Government could enter into talks with al-Qaeda.

Sir Hugh and Mr Powell have both used the experience of Northern Ireland as justification for their stance. Sir Hugh cited a meeting with Gerry Adams in 2004, while Mr Powell helped broker the peace agreement.

Sir Hugh could be the next commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice said today:

‘In the case of Sinn Fein / IRA, although their aim was and still is a united Marxist Ireland, it was clear from the start that a power-sharing deal in that particular patch of UK territory known as Northern Ireland would draw the sting of their campaign.

‘The IRA paradigm is not remotely applicable to al-Qaeda. Their aim is a global caliphate, an international Muslim state. How is anyone supposed to negotiate with those who will only be satisfied by total submission to Islam? It is more than the wrong of negotiating with terrorists. It is utterly pointless. To divert attention to such a waste of time and to raise hopes in such a way is complete lunacy.

‘Has no-one in the Establishment read the Koran or studied the Hadith, which together make up the holy books of the Islamic faith? Do they know nothing of the aims of the Muslim Brotherhood? Do they seriously believe the world is a place where every matter between every intransigent and implacable foe can be sorted out over tea in the drawing-room?

‘We even find such thinking in the Church of England, where a perfectly reasonable plea for evangelism amongst Muslims can be criticised, and the one Bishop who knows something about Islam is castigated as a firebrand. I have even been called an ‘extremist’ in evangelical circles for warning about the demographic menace of Islam in our land.

‘How frightening it is that the secularist Elite have such a slender grasp on reality and that one of them is set to replace another of them in charge of London’s police force.

‘It is a good job Almighty God is in control, because the only thing that can save the United Kingdom in the face of such a combination of ignorance, complacency and wishful-thinking is to re-affirm Christianity as the faith of this nation. The secularism of our leaders, including some churchmen, is clueless in the face of the threat of Islam. We need to repent and put ourselves under the Lord’s protection. Anything else is national suicide.’

Whitehouse Programme Destroys Hugh Greene

The BBC2 Programme ‘Filth’ tonight portrayed Sir Hugh Carleton Greene as a foul-mouthed libertine while trying to send up the late Mary Whitehouse.

Even the music was designed to ridiculed Mrs Whitehouse, but it was Sir Hugh who came off worst, with his character swearing, blaspheming, and belittling his employees and his family while descending into something approaching madness before resigning in the face of the curbs introduce by Lord Hill.

Stephen Green said today:

‘Mary Whitehouse was a pioneer of Christian activism, paving the way first for the Festival of Light and then for today’s pro-life and pro-family movement. Although she failed to stem the tide of filth on television in the long term, Mrs Whitehouse stood up for what she believed, and achieved significant victories along the way.

‘There were behind the scenes triumphs as well. With Charles Oxley, Mary Whitehouse helped expose the Paedophile Information Exchange. That did not feature in the programme.

‘Neither did Mary Whitehouse’s successful prosecution of Gay News, although there was a reference to it as the final credits rolled.

‘Congratulations to Alun Armstrong, who played the part of Ernest Whitehouse with strength and sensitivity.

‘Television bears a responsibility for the way it normalised corruption and helped desensitise society to a secularist agenda in the 1960’s. There is a sense in which the victims of crime of twenty-first century Britain should hold Sir High at least partly responsible for the coarsening of society which has led to a culture of death forty years later. As we sow, so shall we reap. Or, what goes around, comes around.’

Shallow Dispatches Doesn’t Get It

Channel 4’s Dispatches editors are accused of demonising rather than trying to understand the Christian campaigners its reporter followed for almost two years, and of being less than joined-up in their approach to Islam.

The programme, made by David Modell, who has won awards in the past, featured various Christian activists including Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice.

Modell was given a great deal of hospitality by those taking part but never got further than the ‘these Christians are a bit scary’ level.

And Modell’s sycophantic acceptance of Islam and his castigation of Sam Solomon, an ex-Iman who was shown describing Islam as a religion of hate, and Stephen Green, who warned of civil strife if the demographics of Islam continued unabated, were in complete opposition to the approach taken in ‘Undercover Mosque’ , which has just been vindicated by the courts with a grovelling apology by West Midlands Police.

Stephen Green said today:

‘Maybe I could have reacted better outside the Brighton Dome almost two years ago, but it’s an intimidating situation when someone is stalking you like Modell does, refusing to take no for an answer, sticking a camera intrusively in your face the whole time without permission. And it wasn’t the initial incident which made me distrust Modell, it was his evident delight in another’s misfortune.

‘I gave Modell consent for the later interviews, but I am startled now both at his duplicity and his shallowness. He gradually worms his way in, and appears to be all understanding and obsequiously courteous, until he has all the material he wants. Then he turns unpleasant and stabs people in the back. His treatment of Sam Solomon, whom he filmed on the strict understanding that consent to transmission had not been given, then broke his word, not caring whether he was putting the man’s life in danger, was a case in point. Modell in my view is not a man to be trusted.

‘As for the depth of his understanding, it was a bit like filming birds picking up sticks in total bafflement about their behaviour, when lifting the camera to the sky would reveal they are building a nest.

‘Similarly, none of my concerns about the state of our nation, with disintegrating morality leading to rising crime, family breakdown being encouraged in the courts, the injustice of abortion, all of which I aired in the interviews, or any of our other social ills, made it to the edit. The twigs were shown, but the purpose for picking them up was deliberately ignored.

‘Modell found it worrying that I spoke of a looming civil war over the expansionist aims of Islam, and thought we were intolerant to be praying at the site of the proposed West Ham megamosque.

‘But only last week, another Dispatches programme, Undercover Mosque, was exonerated in the courts after West Midlands Police wrongly adopted the same politically-correct head-in-the-sand approach to Islam as Modell.

‘Undercover Mosque showed the all the evils of Islam and the hatred against Jews and Christians being taught in mosques. Tablighi Jamaat, the group behind the megamosque plans, is part of the jihadist Deobandi movement. The 7th July bombers, Richard Reid the shoebomber, and those involved in a plot to blow up airliners were all Tablighi Jamaat followers.

‘It is basic Christian theology that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, was crucified to forgive us our sins, was dead and buried, rose again on the third day, and ascended into heaven. And it is simple logic that if Islam denies all that, which it does, that Islam is a false religion and that its deity is antichrist. Surely that could not have been too hard for someone of David Modell’s intelligence to comprehend.

‘The words of the prophet Isaiah are uncannily appropriate: ‘Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.’ (Isa. 6:10)

‘it is rather sad that with all the time Modell spent and the access he was granted, he never managed to understand what any of us were about, or display any reaction above the knee-jerk ‘dangerous Christians’ level. What a pity to miss an opportunity like that, and sad for him as well to miss a golden opportunity to find salvation and forgiveness for his sins in his rush to make money.

‘But what a peculiar editorial policy applies in Dispatches, where militant Islam in all its horror can be exposed one moment, then its peaceful Christian opponents are castigated the next.’

Atheists to Blaspheme – in Private!

0

The abolition of the blasphemy laws received Royal Assent on 8th May, and to celebrate, the atheists of the National Secular Society plan to do something they could safely have done even while the laws were still in existence.

They are going to hold a secret private party ‘at a central London venue’ at lunchtime on Saturday 21st June at which they can all blaspheme to each other.

The event, for which all tickets have already been sold, is to be called the ‘Bye Bye Blasphemy Party’. The NSS say it will feature ‘a gorgeous buffet lunch’ and ‘entertainment’.

http://truckdriver.blog-city.com/wwwsecularismorguk_39.htm

Their centre-piece, the bravest and most defiant thing they can think of doing, is to have Sir Ian McKellen reading the ‘Gay News poem’, The love that dares to speak its name.

The secluded Jesus-haters will thrill to the sound of the ‘gay’ actor intoning a pornographic homosexual fantasy of what a Roman soldier wanted to do with the crucified body of Christ.

http://truckdriver.blog-city.com/wwwsecularismorguk_45.htm

Terry Sanderson and Keith Pompous Wood, the homosexual partners-in-perversion who run the National Secular Society, also plan ‘special guests’ and ‘loads of surprises’.

One surprise they won’t want their ‘special guests’ to have is to be confronted by a Christian witness and evangelists outside the venue. So they aren’t saying where it is.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘The funny thing is, the mad and the bad could easily have shut themselves up in a room somewhere and read James Kirkup’s dirge to their hearts’ content at any time during the last thirty years. No-one would have known, and no-one will know this time, even when they proudly claim afterwards to have done it.

‘The blasphemy laws have been abolished, but there could never have been a prosecution for blasphemy over this hole-in-corner event while the laws were still in existence anyway. Where would a prosecutor find the evidence? Even if McKellen were to excite his audience with his stunt of tearing anti-gay pages out of a Bible as an encore, no-one would ever know.

‘If they announced the venue and made the occasion open to the public, that would be different. But they daren’t do that.

‘It just goes to show that despite abolition of the blasphemy laws, no-one with any sense is going to insult Jesus Christ publicly in the United Kingdom . No theatre will risk putting on a blasphemous show after what happened to ‘Jerry Springer the Opera’, broadcasters aren’t going to risk a deluge of mail descending on their directors or governors, and supermarkets won’t stock blasphemous DVDs. In the arts, Anita Zabludowicz will never show her blasphemous statue of Jesus Christ in public again, because she knows what will happen to it.

‘And if the fanatics of the NSS don’t dare to blaspheme in the open, it is hard to see who will.

‘So it really is “Bye bye blasphemy”, and not at all in the way they meant.’

Superintendent ‘Wrong’ to Blame Parents

1

A senior police officer has been criticised for blaming parents for the murder of Kodjo Yenga, whose killers were convicted today.

Det Supt Matthew Horne said: “Some of the boys were only 13 when they committed these crimes – children, only just teenagers. “To their parents I would ask them this: what were your kids doing? Where did you think they were at the times these boys were so brutally killed?

“That’s a message to all of us who are parents, we have to take some responsibility to ensure our children are brought up as honest and decent human beings.”

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘We live in a society where all moral boundaries have been overturned. Those at the top, politicians, celebrities, even chief police officers, set lamentable standards of honesty and decency. The death penalty, rightly imposed on the guilty by the state, was abolished and by means of abortion imposed on the innocent within the family. Of course innocent human life is devalued by that. Even Supt Horne’s own boss, Sir Ian Blair, refused to take responsibility for the death of an innocent man shot by his force at Stockwell Tube. No-one will ever be convicted of that atrocity.  Nor will any police officer be brought to book for murdering Nigerian tourist Frank Ogburo by kneeling on his throat during a minor row as the desperate man cried in vain that he couldn’t breathe.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2006/10/05.shtml

‘Divorce on demand is removing fathers from families, immoral sex educators are sexualising children and encouraging perversion. With no boundaries, can we wonder why young girls try to seek the love they so desire in casual sexual encounters knowing there is no financial problem if they become mothers as a result?

‘Schools are now working behind parents’ backs, handing our contraceptives and arranging abortions to children for whom they would need the parents’ permission to give an aspirin. The Government is about to legislate to say fathers aren’t even needed in families. How is a mother on her own supposed to restrain an adolescent son? And the police have waded in setting up diversity units promoting the idea that the evil of homosexuality is perfectly normal.

‘For Superintendent Horne to “blame the parents” is far too simplistic. To insist that parents know where their children are takes no account of the reality of the fractured family life which successive governments have ensured exists up and down the land. If he cannot take responsibility for the way those in power have removed Christian morality, leaving Kodjo Yenga’s murderers with the idea that human life doesn’t matter, he could as least have the decency to hold his hand up to Jean Charles de Menezes’ murder and to the police squandering valuable resources on stupid social engineering, normalising perversion, rather than on good honest coppering.

‘Ordinary people have a right to be angry at the way our godless elite have wrecked Christian morality in this country and the impact that is now making on our everyday lives.’

Free Speech Clause Exposes Atheist Hypocrisy

See How Your MP Voted

An amendment ensuring people are free to criticise homosexual activities and to run sexual healing ministries has passed into law after a stand-off between the Lords and the Commons.

The clause, moved by Lord Waddington in the House of Lords, was inserted into the Government’s Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill in reaction to a new homosexual ‘hate crime’ law.

In practice, although the new law criminalises behaviour which would ‘stir up hatred on grounds of sexual orientation’ it has to be ‘intended’ to do so and it has to be ‘threatening’. There is as little prospect of anyone being charged under it as there is of anyone being charged under the 2006 Racial and Religious Hatred Act which outlawed ‘threatening’ behaviour intended to stir up religious hatred. In addition, the Crown Prosecution Service must gain the approval of the Attorney General in every case, which gives each prosecution a political dimension.

There have consequently been no prosecutions under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act, and it is hard to see how there could be. The law was largely symbolic, just as the new law will be. That does not make it unimportant; the Government used the Racial and Religious Hatred Law to justify abolition of the blasphemy laws.

In addition, there is always the concern that people will feel so under threat from a law such as this that they will feel inhibited from expressing their opinions – the so-called ‘chilling effect’ on freedom of speech. The free speech clause in the 2006 Act was also inserted to prevent politically-correct policemen turning up on doorsteps to intimidate people who were merely engaging in the cut and thrust of religious debate.

That is why, as the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill was going through Parliament in 2005, atheist politicians Dr Evan Harris MP and Lord Lester of Herne Hill were to the fore in promoting a ‘free speech’ clause (which Christian Voice supported). Their clause wrote on the face of the Bill that ‘discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse’ of religions and belief systems were exempt from its provisions.

Now, in the case of the sexual orientation equivalent, the same two politicians were suddenly opposed to freedom of speech.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘There is a famous quote attributed to Voltaire, another opponent of Christianity, that says: “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Today’s atheists are unencumbered by such noble sentiments. Now it is: “I disagree with what you say, and I will defend to the death my right to shut you up.”

‘While Christians campaigned for both these freedom of speech clauses, the atheists only want freedom of speech where it suits them. And it does not suit them to have homosexuality, that overweening expression of rebellion against God’s created order, criticised, ridiculed or insulted. As it happens, in his bid to get his clause accepted, Lord Waddington even had to take out the words ‘expressions of antipathy’. So ordinary decent people aren’t really supposed to be disgusted by homosexuality.

‘Nevertheless, the absence of those words should not matter. Even without them, no one should fear a knock on the door for expressing their opinion about homosexuality. But the passage of the Bill has shone a torch into the dark corners of atheist hypocrisy, and for that we should be both amused and grateful.

NOTES:

RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS HATRED ACT 2006
The Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 (why the words ‘Racial and’ were there when it had nothing to do with racial hatred is a good question) amended the Public Order Act 1986.

The exact form of words, from the 2006 Act, is:

‘A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred.’

The deletion of ‘insulting’ and ‘abusive’ from the original wording of the religious hatred offence means that to prove ‘threatening behaviour’ is now a very high mountain for any prosecution to scale. The fact that the permission of the Attorney General is needed before a case can even be brought adds an additional hurdle, and one of a political nature.

However, despite that provision, it was feared that over-zealous policemen could arrest or harass anyone who merely criticised another religion.

For that reason, as the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 was going through Parliament, the Government was forced to concede this qualification on the face of the 2006 Act, under the heading ‘Protection of freedom of expression’

‘Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system.’

The two main parliamentary protagonists for this freedom of speech clause were Dr Evan Harris MP in the Commons and Lord Lester of Herne Hill in the House of Lords.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND IMMIGRATION ACT 2008
The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 has further amended the Public Order Act 1986 by inserting the words ‘or hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation’ after ‘stir up religious hatred’ in the definition above. So it now reads:

‘A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred or hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.’

The permission of the Attorney General is still needed before a case can be brought.

However, despite that provision, the experience of people who had been intimidated by the police for voicing opinions hostile to homosexuality even without the new law showed that there was still a problem from policemen prejudiced against Christianity in particular. The case in which the Bishop of Chester, a member of the House of Lords, was investigated by the police for saying the homosexuality could be treated and overcome showed that mere guidelines would not work. A freedom of expression clause was needed on the face of the Act. The one successfully moved by Lord Waddington was in the end much weaker in tone than its religious hatred equivalent. Under the heading ‘Protection of freedom of expression (sexual orientation),’ it says this:

‘In this Part, for the avoidance of doubt, the discussion or criticism of sexual conduct or practices or the urging of persons to refrain from or modify such conduct or practices shall not be taken of itself to be threatening or intended to stir up hatred.’

The two main parliamentary opponents of this freedom of speech clause were Dr Evan Harris MP in the Commons and Lord Lester of Herne Hill in the House of Lords.

Christian Voice Killed My Musical – Stewart Lee

2

God honoured Christian Voice campaign:
Author says he wouldn’t do another Jerry Springer the Opera

Following a House of Commons vote last night, the blasphemy laws will be abolished as soon as the Government’s Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill receives Royal Assent.  Paradoxically, with Christians determined to make even more dramatic witness now it has gone, writers and producers are highly unlikely to risk staging anything insulting Almighty God or Jesus Christ in future, at least if they have the sense to listen to Stewart Lee.

Lee has blamed Christian Voice for the death of his brainchild musical Jerry Springer the Opera and now says he wouldn’t work on anything controversial on a similar scale again.

The comedians’ website ‘Chortle’ said that the musical, which they say Lee spent years developing, ‘suffered financially’ when Christian Voice orchestrated a highly successful campaign against it during 2005 and 2006.

And even though the High Court and the House of Lords ruled against a bid by Christian Voice National Director Stephen Green to bring a private blasphemy prosecution Lee said the furore would stop people investing time in controversial shows.

‘There would be no point writing anything with any religious content which would require big box office receipts or public funding to float it, as a fuss like this could wipe it out instantly,’ he told the obsessive free-speech group ‘Index On Censorship’.  ‘Idiots’, said Lee, ‘could too easily close it down’. (Chortle: 10/12/2007)

http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2007/12/10/6141

TOUR WAS A FINANCIAL DISASTER
Even the partisan Polly Toynbee, an ‘honorary associate’ of the rabidly anti-Christian National Secular Society, agreed with Lee in an article in the Guardian on 27th June 2006:

‘The tour was a financial disaster after fundamentalist Christians attacked the tour,’ she wailed. ‘Far from all publicity being good publicity, it put off the usual audience for musicals, who assumed this show must be all filth, shock and schlock. Fear of running the gauntlet of rabid zealots also kept many away. Many theatres pulled out and ticket sales were low. No wonder evangelicals gloat on their websites that they have won and that the production is “under a curse” financially. Censorship has many weapons.’

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2006/jun/27/arts.theatre

Lee, says Chortle, ‘first starting working on the show with composer Richard Thomas in 2001 at the Battersea Arts Centre. Versions were staged at the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe and at the National Theatre in 2003 before transferring to the West End .’

The blasphemous second act, in which the Lord Jesus Christ is portrayed as a sexual deviant, or, to be specific, as an infantile coprophiliac who is ‘a little bit gay’, was added during the development process.

CHRISTIAN VOICE WROTE TO REGIONAL THEATRES
When the BBC drew the attention of Christians to the final version of the show by screening it on BBC2 in January 2005, Christian Voice wrote to hundreds of regional theatres just as Jerry Springer the Opera was being scheduled to tour.

Lee said: ‘At the time, the Incitement to Racial and Religious Hatred Bill was hanging around in its unmodified form, and Christian Voice were able to exploit the woolly wording to give theatres the impression they could be prosecuted for staging JSTO, so we lost loads of venues and the tour went ahead but was not financially viable.’

The letter from Christian Voice warned of prosecutions for blasphemy and protests and drew attention to the poor attendance for the show in its dying days at the Cambridge Theatre in London ‘s Covent Garden in February 2005. More than a dozen venues, including the Derby Playhouse and the Guildhall, Portsmouth , pulled out.

Toynbee complains: ‘After more than a third of the theatres pulled out in panic, only 23 weeks of bookings remained – too few to have any chance of recouping costs. The authors waived their royalties and the producers decided to take the loss; the Arts Council tipped in a little so people in the regions could see something they regarded as excellent.’

ARTS COUNCIL PULLED FUNDING
In fact, the Arts Council pulled their main funding for the show after the initial furore, and rightly or wrongly, as the Arts Council will never admit to bowing to pressure, Christian Voice got the blame. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/4261796.stm

Their subsequent funding was on a much small scale, to only three theatres.  http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/pressnews/press_detail.php?rid=10&id=587

But the public simply didn’t agree that Jerry Springer the Opera was ‘excellent’ or even worth seeing at all, after a Christian Voice campaign in which audiences at theatres staging the show were lobbied for weeks in advance of JSTO turning up and then on the night.  Tens of thousands of evangelistic leaflets informing theatre-goers of the content of the show were given out.  As a result, only Newcastle ‘s Theatre Royal managed to cover a third of its seats during the run.  Many struggled to get a quarter full.  Toynbee moans: ‘Most local reviews were raves, but too late for ticket sales.’

In the end, the producers Avalon admitted they lost between £300,000 and £half-a-million, although Avalon’s boss Jonathan Thoday, with a personal fortune given as £12m in the Indy’s media richlist even in 2001, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/the-media-rich-list-751541.html could easily afford that, Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas, the show’s creators, waived their royalties, David Soul was replaced by Rolf Saxon in the title role, the cast-list was cut by a third and every single theatre made a thumping loss of tens of thousands of pounds of council-tax-payers’ money.

CLOSED DOWN BY ‘IDIOTS’
Lee says, ‘I’d never become involved to such a degree on something on such a big scale if there was the possibility of it being effectively closed down like this.

‘I can’t afford not to be paid for years and years of work on the whim of idiots. That said, no one ever saw this coming. What people take offence at, or choose to be offended by, will always be unpredictable.’

However, as Jerry Springer the Opera was stuffed to the gills with (as the late blasphemy law put it) contemptuous, scurrilous, reviling, abusive and ludicrous representations of God, Jesus Christ, the Bible and the sacraments of the Church, Lee has to have been myopic or ignorant not to have foreseen that there would be an outcry if his show ever poked its nose outside the normal haunts of the artistic elite.

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS BAD PUBLICITY AFTER ALL
As it was, the outcry was enormous, with 55,000 protests to the BBC and then protests at every single theatre on the doomed tour.  Even before the show opened, Christian Voice had been blamed for poor ticket sales in an article in the Guardian (27/01/2006).

At the same time, the news agency Reuters observed ‘There is such a thing as bad publicity after all’ and quoted Jonathan Thoday as saying: ‘Christian Voice are winning the audience battle’.

The Royal Family even became involved in the controversy.  Prince Edward is patron of His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen , which was one of the theatres involved, so when he attended a public church service, all those attending were given a leaflet calling on him to resign.  The Prince was forced to claim he was only patron of the theatre’s rebuilding fund.  As the tour limped around Britain , theatre managers struggled to put a brave face on a growing disaster.  The Fairfield Halls in Croydon cancelled three out of eight performances of Jerry Springer the Opera as its Chief Executive Derek Barr, after failing to get his theatre out of its contract with Avalon, admitted: “Maybe we should have avoided it.’

A THOUSAND CHRISTIAN PROTESTERS ON THE FIRST NIGHT
According to Polly Toynbee: ‘Stewart Lee says a thousand Christian protesters turn up on the first night in big cities. In Leicester some of the cast were turned out of their B&Bs. The Archbishop of Wales tried to get the show stopped at the Wales Millennium Centre. The Scottish cancer charity Maggie’s Centres dared not accept the money from a gala performance when Christian Voice told it doing so would “upset Christians all over the world”.’

Toynbee urged theatre-goers to take the ‘last chance’ to ‘beat the bigots’ by going to see the show at its closing venue, the Brighton Dome, of which she is a patron. Not many took her up on it. She wrote in her June 2006 article: ‘Jerry Springer the Opera reaches the end of its noisy tour next week with a grand finale at the Brighton Dome. It will have made a hefty loss for its producers, who toured it despite knowing that trouble would dog it and that it would lose money. But they were determined not to let the evangelicals win.’

THE EVANGELICALS DID WIN!
Of course, as a comment on her article said: ‘But since producers primarily put shows on to make money, and they lost money, the evangelicals DID win.’

Or, more properly, Almighty God won – and made fools of His enemies.

In an interview in November 2006, Stewart Lee said that the protests ‘soured’ his nomination for an Olivier Award. ‘On a basic level, it meant we never really broke even, or saw much money for it, as it was effectively closed down. Secondly, it has made me think there’s no point trying to do anything any good on a mass-level, as ****s will sabotage it. Also, though I am proud of my contribution, I am now sick to death of talking about the thing, which is ruined for ever for me.’

The quaintly-named magazine and website ‘The Freethinker’ (where you are free to think anything you like as long as it’s atheist) agrees that projects insulting Jesus Christ are now not likely to see the light of day because of ‘self-censorship’.  While it would be better if self-control and common courtesy were the reasons, it is good that the worlds of atheism and the arts are taking notice.

DON’T INSULT JESUS CHRIST IN THE UK
In Christian Voice, we take no credit for the Springer disaster. Our prayer led us to do a few basic things, and while doing them, we learnt how to combine witness with evangelism to great effect.  All those who said that by giving it publicity we would inadvertently make Jerry Springer the Opera an even bigger success were proved precisely wrong.  Almighty God honoured us for standing up for Him and He confounded His enemies.

But Stewart Lee’s message to his fellow atheists in the world of the arts is clear: Whatever happens in other countries is up to them; just don’t even think about staging anything insulting Jesus Christ in the United Kingdom.

Lloyd Webber Could Face Evangelists Over Superstar

0

The prospect of the BBC auditioning pop hopefuls in front of Andrew Lloyd Webber for the role of Jesus has led a Christian group to promise Jerry Springer the Opera-style protests and evangelism if the project goes ahead.

Christian Voice said tonight that they might even try to get young Christians into the audition room itself to share the Gospel of the real Jesus Christ with Lord Lloyd-Webber himself.

The BBC are now said to be reconsidering their decision to air the reality TV show based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar just weeks after the composer said he wanted to cast Jesus as a follow-up to Maria in The Sound of Music and Nancy and Oliver in the musical Oliver.

The TV shows How do you solve a problem like Maria and I’d Do Anything were regarded by TV bosses as such a success that Lord Lloyd-Webber (he was raised to the peerage in 1999) has been urged to come up with another one. He said in March: “I have an idea to do Jesus Christ Superstar next year and then maybe another all-new show which I’m really excited about.”

But the BBC are now said by the website UnrealityTV ‘to be worried that they will face the same sort of complaints from Christian groups that they faced over Jerry Springer Opera a few years ago.’

The Sun was told by a BBC insider: “Some Christian groups are bound to have a problem with Andrew telling people, ‘You could be Jesus.’ ”

Jesus Christ Superstar caused protests from Christians during its 1970s West End run by portraying Jesus Christ as a mere man, a tormented character buffeted by events. It ended with Him being laid in the tomb and there was no resurrection.

Auditions could take place this year, but as with previous shows, they will be held across the country and the judges, who will include Lloyd Webber, will be at each venue.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said tonight: “If it were to go ahead, the show would then become for Christian Voice very much a ‘Jerry Springer the Opera’ operation, with witness and evangelism at every venue. There are still plenty of veterans of the early protests over Jesus Christ Superstar around who would love to share the Gospel with the queuing wanabees.  It might even be that we could encourage Christian singers to enrol in order to tell Andrew Lloyd-Webber just what they think of his project in the audition room itself.”

Rivers of Blood – 70 Years on

Just 40 years ago, on 22nd April 1968, the late Enoch Powell MP told a meeting in his Wolverhampton constituency that Britain ‘must be mad’ to allow 50,000 dependents of Commonwealth immigrants to settle every year in Britain .  He said enacting legislation like the Race Relations Bill was ‘to risk throwing a match onto gunpowder’ and described Britain as a nation ‘busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre’.

Mr Powell quoted a constituent who said that ‘in fifteen or twenty years’ time, the black man will have the whip hand over the white man.’  In a speech replete with Biblical and Classical imagery and quotation, Mr Powell warned that there would be forces working against integration which would begin as ‘a cloud no bigger than a man’s hand’ that ‘can so rapidly overcast the sky’.  ‘As I look ahead,’ said Mr Powell, ‘ I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see the River Tiber foaming with much blood.’

Enoch Powell was dismissed from the Shadow Cabinet and became a political pariah.  The race relations industry which he was so afraid would exacerbate the problems he saw grew into a Behemoth granting money in patronising fashion to favoured projects of its subservient immigrant client groups.  The same philosophy exists today.  The Government’s only answer to Muslim extremism is to hurl cash at it in the belief the money indeed answereth all things.

The so-called race riots  of the 1980s, in Bristol , Toxteth, Brixton and Birmingham seemed to prove that ‘Enoch was right’.  But they came and went and the West Indian population, although still over-represented in certain areas, has greatly assimilated.  Whether race relations money helped or hindered might depend on one’s point of view.

African Christians also quickly became part of the indigenous culture, enriching it as they came.  Amongst the Asians, Sikhs appear to have mixed in, even as they try to keep their culture intact, whereas middle-caste Hindus have simply got on with what they do best, which is opening shops and making money.  Christians from Asia, like those from the Caribbean and Africa , have brought nothing but good to these shores, and many tell how let down they feel by what they thought was the Christian country they were coming to.

Which leaves the Muslims.  Even the mention of Islam shows how wrong Enoch Powell was to see the problem as one of colour.  He should have known better, but like many of his time he was a religious Christian but a cultural atheist.  Parliament had only the year before he spoke passed the Abortion Act and the Sexual Offences Act.  Innocent human life had been further devalued by the abolition of the death penalty just two years earlier.  The Theatres Act would abolish censorship in the year Mr Powell was speaking, whilst the Divorce Reform Act would blow away the Christian legal basis to marriage the year after.  Even while he was speaking of a nation heaping up its own funeral pyre, secularists in government and the civil service were, like the Mole Man of Hackney, just as busily undermining its very foundations.  The problem then, as now, was never black, largely Christian, faces walking about the streets, it was already white atheist backsides sitting in the corridors of power.

But even if Enoch Powell had been as far-sighted as the Christian campaigners who were to initiate the 1970s Festival of Light, he would never have seen the rise of militant Islam.  The seeds were already there in the Muslim Brotherhood, but it was only 9-11 which thrust the activities of Brotherhood derivative Al-Quaeda into the limelight.  Nevertheless, the Festival of Light, to whose legacy Christian Voice must aspire to succeed, knew that it would be the abandoning of our Christian heritage, rather than black immigration, which would lead to the destruction of Britain .

Today, as then, it is not against flesh and blood which Christians wrestle, but against spiritual wickedness in high places.  The wickedness being enacted, anti-life embryology, the destruction of our Christian constitution and so on, shows secularism to be a jealous devouring god which allows no dissent.  Yet even now, Islam is loitering in the wings of the political stage, and secularists have no answer except to use the old race relations model of hurling money in the hope of appeasing it.

But it will not work.  Islam, like fire, will never say ‘enough’.  Unless Christianity is re- asserted as the faith of this realm, and quickly, Muslims will try to substitute Islam as the faith of these Islands .  Secularism is powerless to resist Islam.  Secularist politicians, as we have so clearly seen in the establishment response to Islamic terrorism, don’t have a clue what they are dealing with.  Secularism also leaves a spiritual vacuum at the heart of government and nature, as we know, hates a vacuum.

If present birth-rates amongst Muslims continue, and there is no sign of Muslims becoming secularised to the extent that they adopt the anti-child contraceptive mentality of the rest of us, then they will be in a majority within 40 years.  But the experience of Tower Hamlets shows that the vacuum could easily be filled ten years before that.  Even at 30% of the population, Muslims will want power and they will get ‘the whip hand’ as Mr Powell’s constituent put it, over black, brown and white alike.  Then, if they gain a majority in Parliament, they will want to impose Sharia.

At that point, which I suggest could be in thirty years’ time, the majority may well decide to defend their desire not to live under Islam by force of arms.  Whose side the Police and Armed Forces will be on in such a conflict is anyone’s guess.  The European Union will be powerless to come to the rescue, even if it is still in existence that far in the future.  Germany will be facing the same Islamic problem.

It could of course be that the EU will already have blown apart with or without bloodshed.  Eastern European immigration is now leading to pressures on British health facilities, housing, schooling and benefits, whilst rival gangs from the Baltic to the Balkans are stretching police resources beyond the limit.  Enoch Powell never foresaw that ingredient in the mix.  But if one country, Britain perhaps, were to call time, secede and take back its natural resources, which in our case would most visibly mean our fishing grounds, there could be retaliatory EU naval action which could easily escalate into full-scale war.

So either from the EU or from Islam there is trouble looming.  It could easily become external war or that most bestial of monsters, civil war.  We must pray for national repentance, because only God in Jesus Christ can save us, and He will only do so if we turn to Him in our despair and cry out of the darkness for His mercy.  Christians must take courage and confidence in the Gospel and in the rule of Christ and pray and work for His Kingdom, in earth as in heaven.  God has not forgotten mercy, but time is running out.  None of us wants to say, 30 years hence, 70 years after his Wolverhampton speech, that in a peculiar sort of way, Enoch was right.
