Greece has become the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalise “same-sex” marriage.

On January 15th, Greece’s parliament voted 176-76 in favour, granting “same-sex” couples the legal right to marry and adopt children within the country.

The bill needed a majority to pass through the 300-member parliament.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asserted that the new law would “boldly abolish a serious inequality,” claiming that Greece cannot continue “to have two classes of citizens and certainly not to have children of a lesser God”.

‘People who have been invisible will finally be made visible around us, and with them, many children will finally find their rightful place,’ the prime minister told parliament during a debate ahead of the vote’.

Mr Mitsotakis had championed the bill but required the support of opposition parties to get it over the line, with dozens of MPs from his centre-right governing party opposed.

‘The reform makes the lives of several of our fellow citizens better, without taking away anything from the lives of the many’, he added.

The Bible says,
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Mitsotakis’ mercenary motives?

Analysts speculate that Mitsotakis may have mercenary motives behind his support for the ” LGBTQ” law. Aligning Greece’s policy with the stance adopted by 20 other European nations could enhance Mitsotakis’ chances of securing favourable positions within the European Union (EU) after his term expires.

During the World Economic Forum, Mitsotakis in a panel discussion said, ‘We now have four years in power, an absolute majority in parliament, and a strong mandate to implement ambitious reforms to change the fabric of the country and make it a true EU country.

‘We spent a lot of time trying to become part of the EU, then a decade trying to remain in the EU, and now is the real time to become Europe’.

Instead of prioritising economic growth, pay raises, and unemployment, Mitsotakis advocated for the legalisation of “same-sex” marriage.

The Bible says,
Isaiah 1:10 Listen to what the Lord says, you rulers of Sodom, and pay attention to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah!

The church responds

The decision has sparked intense division within Greece, particularly with strong opposition from the influential Orthodox Church.

Supporters of the Church organised a protest rally in Athens, where many participants displayed banners, held crosses, prayed, and sang passages from the Bible at Syntagma Square.

The head of the Orthodox Church, Archbishop Ieronymos, said the measure would ‘corrupt the homeland’s social cohesion’.

On the 13th, July, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece unanimously agreed at a meeting that it is “strongly opposed” to the Greek government’s decision on same-sex marriage and adoption.

‘The initiators of the bill and those who agree with it are promoting the abolition of fatherhood and motherhood and their transformation into neutral parenthood, the disappearance of gender roles within the family and the placing of the sexual choices of homosexual adults above the interests of future children’, the Holy Synod said in a press release.

The Holy Synod described the bill as riddled with contradictions, which will encourage people to circumvent it by seeking surrogacy opportunities abroad.

The Bible says,
Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

European mainstream

Greek media sources have speculated on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s potential efforts to mend his government’s reputation on the international stage, particularly following a spy scandal and concerns regarding media freedoms. However, if Mitsotakis is indeed positioning himself toward Brussels, such aspirations are likely to materialise only after several years, possibly following the conclusion of his four-year term in 2027.

Mitsotakis may encounter challenges in securing prominent roles, especially after the June European election, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, both affiliated with the European People’s Party—the same political family as the Greek PM—are aiming to retain their positions at the helm.

Countries where sodomy is legal

Across the globe, 64 countries maintain laws criminalising “homosexuality”, with nearly half of them situated in Africa.

In December 2022, Singapore’s parliament made headlines by repealing a contentious law prohibiting sex between men. Similarly, the high court in Barbados took significant action by striking down laws that criminalized gay sex during the same month.

Further strides were made in July of the previous year, when courts in Antigua and Barbuda deemed a law criminalizing same-sex acts between consenting adults as unconstitutional. These developments mark important shifts towards greater inclusivity and equality within these jurisdictions.
