Cardinal Keith O’Brien

A Roman Catholic cardinal has been named ‘Bigot of the Year’ by the publicly-funded Stonewall pro-sodomy lobby group.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, and is said to have stated that same-sex relationships are “harmful to the physical, mental and spiritual well-being” and compared equal marriage to slavery and child abuse.

In a newspaper article earlier this year, the cardinal wrote that the proposal for same-sex marriage represented a “grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right”.

Under his leadership the Catholic Church in Scotland has pledged to “declare war” on marriage equality and committed an additional £100,000 for the fight.

Other nominees included Christian politician Alan Craig, who complained of the ‘Gaystapo’ and Simon Lokodohe, the Ugandan ethics and integrity minister, who ordered the disbanding of meetings of gay equality groups, the arrest of pro-sodomy activists, insisting that they ‘recruit children’ into homosexuality and supported David Bahati’s proposal of the death penalty for those convicted of sodomy.

As the blogger ‘Archbishop Cranmer’ observed,

‘By giving the award to Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Stonewall deem the free expression of religious conviction and Christian theological tradition to be more ‘bigoted’ than active persecution …  Is any more evidence needed of Stonewall’s blind hypocrisy, perverse immorality and vicious bigotry? They don’t even permit the nominees of this award to attend the ceremony and make an acceptance speech in their own defence.’

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson picked up ‘politician of the year’ at the £180-a-head bash last night in recognition of her being a lesbian.  But she used her acceptance speech to criticise the bigot of the year category, saying it was “simply wrong” to use such terminology.

Ms Davidson, who attended the ceremony presented by broadcaster Gok Wan, said: “There are many voices in this debate and just as I respectfully express my sincerely held belief that we should extend marriage to same-sex couples, I will also respect those who hold a different view.”

She said: “But where I disagree with Stonewall in these awards is the need to call people names like ‘bigot’. It is simply wrong.

“The case for equality is far better made by demonstrating the sort of generosity, tolerance and love we would wish to see more of in this world.”

But of course Stonewall don’t do generosity, tolerance and love.  Miss Davidson was booed by the audience for voicing her criticism.

Christian Concern’s Andrea Minichiello Williams said she regarded Cardinal Keith O’Brien as “a courageous Christian leader who has stood for the truth”.

Coutts and Barclays, who were sponsoring categories at the awards dinner, have also strongly criticised the ‘Bigot of the Year’ award and will not longer fund the event if it contains the insulting nomination.  The Coutts decision came just one working day after a Christian Voice witness outside their London HQ. (see our 31st October story below)

Their decision follows that of the Nationwide Building Society to drop their £65,000 sponsorship of the event after Christian Voice members prayed and wrote to them last year.  (See our 21st July story below)

  1. So much material in one article. Where does one start…

With the irony of a celibate unmarried man pontificating on the nature and sanctity of marriage?

With the irony of “Christian” Voice pointing the finger at Stonewall for not “doing” generosity, tolerance and love (without a hint of self-awareness)?

With how nice it is to hear from Andrea M W with her views – where does she find the time? I thought she was busy losing cases left and right for Christians nationwide.

No, for me the high point is the conceit on the part of “Christian” Voice in thinking that their intercessionary prayer directed at Nationwide was granted. That the great sky fairy, of all of the prayers worldwide, picked that one to grant. Ignoring the prayers for the end of poverty, child abuse, cruelty, etc. Whilst all within his or her power to grant, the one he / she favoured was the withdrawal of funding to a gay Charity dinner. What an awesome god!

    • Where indeed to start?

With the scandal of sexual perverts trying to redefine God’s holy institution of marriage to suit themselves?

With the generosity, tolerance and love for God and for neighbour displayed by Christian Voice members, who really are an amazing group of people?

Or with atheists struggling to work out why no fewer than three banks have dumped the Stonewall awards without being able to attribute that change of heart to the Almighty?

No, for me, it’s the irony of someone who doesn’t actually care appearing to be concerned about poverty, child abuse and cruelty, all caused by human sin, while championing governments and big business NGO’s spending hundreds of millions in the UK and worldwide promoting the sins of perversion, feminism and the injustice and cruelty of abortion instead of using that money to help poor families provide for themselves.

      • Stephen, I’ve seen you on Channel 4’s Dispatches and a few Youtube videos, and I am left wondering whether you are hucksterishly peddling this fundamentalist message for your personal gain or if you sincerely believe it. Assuming for the moment that you are sincere, the following is written in the faint hope that it may somehow register in your bizarre mind.

Many of us do not believe in a supernatural creator nor do we wish to be subject to such a belief. We do not accept the bible as literal, it is a collection of books subject to semantic change over time and should be studied as a work of literature. We do not have a problem with you, and those who share your beliefs, subjecting yourselves to whatever religious restrictions you wish, but we do take issue with you attempting to impose those restrictions on us. Acceptance of homosexuality and access to birth control are aspects of our society that we proudly endorse. If we are wrong and eternal suffering awaits us after death as a result of our alleged blasphemy then so be it. But in this life, here and now, we will not accept theocracy in any form. These principles are as fundamental to us as your faith is to you, the sooner you understand and accept this, the better off we will all be.

        • I understand totally that you are a proper atheist and you want to see Secularist laws imposed while scorning Judeo-Christian laws and Islamic laws.
I also understand, as you probably do, that if anyone is a proper Muslim he wants to see Islamic laws imposed and scorns Judeo-Christian laws and Secularist laws.
You need to understand that if someone is a proper Christian he will want to see Christian laws imposed and will scorn Secularist laws and Islamic laws.

  2. As a Catholic, I am glad that a British Cardinal was the winner and I hope that the bishops in England will ‘take a leaf out of his book’ and that they will stop prevaricating, trying to be ‘reasonable’ and ‘pussyfooting about’ on the very serious subject of homosexual ‘marriage’.

A number of prominent ‘Catholics’ submitted a letter to The Times recently supporting homosexual marriage. This effort came about at an invitation from Cameron to Peter Tatchell to enlist the help of some Catholics in his and The Times’ campaign to legalise these sham marriages. It should be noted that Tatchell campaigned for years for the abolition of the ‘age of consent’ (though now he is very quiet on the matter). At least one of these ‘Catholics’ has had invitations to work in Catholic universities in the US withdrawn and is now screaming ‘Nazism’ at the Church. It is nice to see someone suffer for their hereticial views for once.

  3. I’m inclined to agree with Ann Farmer’s viewpoint. With the apostasy of false religion, the abomination of homosexuality and God’s judgement falling on our nation, does no-one realise that Jesus is coming soon for His Bride, the Church (ekklesia), called out ones who love the Word of God. They meditate on it day and night and wish to follow only the Holy Spirit in all things and witness to the lost about the saving power and love of the Lord Jesus Christ. The wise virgins made sure they had their lamps filled with oil (the Holy Spirit) to be able to discern the signs of the times. We have a choice these days of whether we shall be controlled by the Spirit of the Lamb (Jesus) or the spirit of the beast (satan).
