On this day 167 years ago, Joseph Smith was born. One of the greatest con-artists of all time, his influence is still felt by the many Brits, and even more Americans, who continue to be duped by his prophetic claims.

Those who are unfamiliar with the Mormon religion Smith started may find it useful to see Jon Swaine’s Telegraph article from last October.

Interestingly, the Mormon faith is growing surprisingly fast in the UK, according to this BBC report. Indeed, the number of Mormons in the UK rose from 6,500 in the 1960s to 190,000 members  by 2008.

Because Mormons are taught to proselytize, Christians need to always be ready to discuss the claims of Mormonism with Mormon missionaries and to share the Biblical alternative. It is true that Mormons claim to believe the Bible, in addition to their voluminous and ever-growing corpus of extra Biblical revelations. However, the God they teach is as different to the God of Christianity as night differs from day.

  3. We believe the Holy Bible to be the inspired, infallible, written Word of God to whose precepts, given for the good of nations and individuals, all man’s laws must submit.
  4. We believe all government to be under the authority of God and that its purpose is the maintenance of freedom and justice solely in accordance with Biblical principles.
