The fastest-growing religion in Manchester is Islam.
The fastest-growing religion in Manchester is Islam.

Figures from the 2011 census show that almost a tenth of under-fives are Muslims, double the overall percentage, claims The Times newspaper.

The figures show there were 3.5 million children aged 0-4 of whom 320,000 were Muslim. That proportion is 9.14%.

“It certainly is a startling figure,” said Professor David Coleman, Professor of Demography at the University of Oxford. “We have had substantial immigration of Muslims for a long time. Continuing immigration from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India has been added to by new immigration from African countries and from the Middle East.

“Birth rates of Muslims of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin remain quite high, although falling. There seem to be very low levels of falling away from religion among Muslims.”

The figure of 9.14% of under-fives compares with a total Muslim population among all age groups of less than five per cent.

One expert reported in the Daily Telegraph write-up said it was possible that Muslims who worshipped would outnumber practising Christians. “It’s not inconceivable,” said David Voas, Professor of Population Studies at the University of Essex.

In big cities the percentages are even more marked.  University of Manchester data analysed by Mancunian Matters revealed that Islam is out-growing every other religion in the city.

According to the data 12.5% of those identifying themselves as Muslim in Manchester in the 2011 census were aged between 0-4.

This is more than double the 5.6% of Christians aged 0-4 and significantly larger those of no religion at 6.8%.

Dr Hassan Alkatib, director of the Manchester Islamic Centre, told MM that Muslims tend to bring up children within the religion.  This differs from modern European ways of bringing up kids.

“Islam does not allow people to have sex outside marriage,” he said.

“So people get married into the religion and then their children are brought up in it.

“The size of Muslim families in general is double that of the European family and we have waves of Muslim immigrants coming to the UK.”

This explanation was echoed by Professor Simpson: “Maybe Christian parents consider religion as something their children will choose later, while Muslim parents consider their religion as an identity of origin, that their children have without choice,” he said.

Muslim fecundity dwarfs that of white and black Christians, even though the Bible records God telling Adam and Eve (Gen 1:28) to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:”

The command was repeated to the sons of Noah twice:

Gen 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

Gen 9:7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

According to The Times, Professor Voas said he saw no prospect of Muslims becoming a majority in Britain. Rapidly growing Muslim families are making their mark on society, however. The Department for Education lists 136 Muslim schools, 125 of them in the private sector.

Britain’s first halal food festival, intended for the British Muslim middle classes, attracted 15,000 visitors to the London Excel in September. There are already 1,600 mosques.

In addition to that, Muslims are in a majority on Tower Hamlets London Borough Council despite being only 30% of the population. Out of 51 councillors, 31 are Muslim, drawn from Labour, the Independents and Respect.  Muslims also have a one-seat majority in the ruling Labour group.  The Mayor and his deputy are Muslims.

The Muslim majority has dominated Tower Hamlets for more than fifteen years.  In 2003 we reported that the Council recommended to the Boundaries Commission the aboliition or name-change of wards named after the Christian faith.  St Marys, St Peters, St James and Holy Trinity (the latter especially offensive to Muslims) were abolished.

Last year, a freedom of information request revealed that 25 Muslims organisations received a total of £378,000 from the £595,000 dished out under a mayoral scheme to improve places of worship.

In comparison, 12 Christian groups were handed £140,000 – with the rest of the grants distributed between a total of six Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist organisations.

Matt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

  1. That is a very interesting article, but I think, with respect, that you are concerned with the incidentals rather than the main problem. Of course Islam will grow when there is no meaningful alternative presented to it.
We need to be asking ourselves why Moslems are so resistant to the Gospel in Britain when in Iran, Indonesia, Algeria and many other Moslem countries (even including Saudi Arabia) hundreds are forsaking Islam for Christianity in the teeth of bitter persecution.
The reason is, I believe, that the Gospel is scarcely preached in this country, and many church ministers, especially among the C of E, United Reformed and Methodist churches, simply have no idea what the Gospel is and have nothing to preach. The ‘Christian’ message, as it is heard on the media from the Archbishop of Canterbury and others, is simply a social message without any mention of the way of salvation. Other Christian leaders are seen to be promoting sins that are condemned in the clearest terms in the Bible. It is a wonder that our churches are not emptier than they are, and no wonder that Moslems despise Christianity when its leaders do not respect its holy book!
The true Gospel message tells us that we cannot save ourselves or make ourselves righteous in any way and therefore need a Saviour. This is a direct challenge to Islam, and will be blessed by God when it is faithfully preached, to convict sinners and lead them to Christ.
So what needs to be done? Firstly, Christians need to leave churches where the Gospel is not preached and head for those where it is. F.I.E.C. and Grace Baptist churches can usually be relied on, and there are others. If liberal and unbelieving church ministers stop receiving support, they will soon leave their positions and start earn their livings in a more honourable way.
Secondly, all true Christians need to be praying together, not just in one spot in East London, but in every town and village in Britain. Christian Voice will be doing a great service if it encourages and facilittes such prayer meetings. A start has already been made; try googling ‘Concert of Prayer.’ We need to pray that God will raise up faithful preachers in our day as He did in the days of Wesley and Whitefield.
The Lord Jesus Christ will build His Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. We are on the winning side. Read Isaiah 62.

    • Your right Stephen, the Gospel is rarely preached in this country and the church has a lot to answer for, i recently read over Christmas that the church was starting a pilot scheme to open its doors to atheists and people that believe in other things, to bring them all together for a service but leaving out God, Jesus and the salvation message, i mean seriously? which bright spark thought that one up?
Then we have homosexuals preaching from the pulpits with the backing of a congregation, again a minister was in the papers just before Christmas taking part in drug fueled orgies with male prostitutes and members of his congregation were defending him in the press saying how great and genuine a man he is!, these people are oblivious to the Word of God yet they consider themselves Christians.
On a final point the Archbishop of Canterbury gave a message in the new year about the poor and needy whilst the Church is supposed to sit on money and assets worth 10 billion pounds, how many poor and needy would that jackpot help?
When they passed the gay marriage bill the church was silent on it, Christianity is dying in England and the church must shoulder a lot of the blame

    • Spot on, Bro!
Though you forgot to mention that Christians have no warrant whatsoever to hand their children to secularists for “education”.
They are not “salt and light”.
They are lambs among wolves, biblically-speaking.

    • “many church ministers, especially among the C of E, United Reformed and Methodist churches, simply have no idea what the Gospel is ”

Ridiculous ! Of course they know what the Gospel is. They may depart from your interpretation of it, but of course they know what it is.

      • Two generalisations on opposite sides! Have any surveys been done to support either proposition?

And I must ask, Rox, since you claim to know that the church ministers Mr Owen was referring to know the Gospel, perhaps you could tell us what the Gospel is, as you understand it?

        • In “Gospel” or “God Spiel”, the Anglo-Saxon “spel” turns out to be remarkably similar to our own modern use of the word “spiel” ! It was the account of the life and teachings of Jesus which the early Christians, many of whom considered him to be God, used when trying to sell Christianity to potential converts like Theoophilus.

Of course, God Spel is usually correctly translated as “Good News”, and the good news in question is again the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In French the Gospel is called l’Évangile, and similarly in other languages, even Dutch and German. This is derived from the Greek name meaning “Good Messenger” .

Physically, the Gospel consists in fact of four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, not always in agreement. “The Gospel” used to be commonly found as a single volume (particularly when books were hand-written, as in Anglo-Saxon England), but is now almost always part of the New Testament, usually itself part of The Bible.

Almost all that we know about the life and teachings of Jesus is in the Gospel, and in most editions it amounts to little more than 100 pages. I very much doubt if any ministers of any denomination have not read it. How they interpret it is a different matter.

[ For the sake of completeness, there is admittedly additional material from Paul , though he can not have been an eye-witness (I don’t know how reliable his sources would have been, compared with the famous four’s ). And there is some material which has come to light since the “Bible” was established in Latin, English and other languages, the most promising being perhaps the 114 “sayings of Jesus” discovered at Nag Hammadi. ]

          • ‘ the gospel is the four Gospels…’

yes, but , if witnessingb the saving GOOD news to a lost soul.
what should one say, “Read the four Gospels” ?

2 Thessalonians 2:10,11, because they took not on the love of the truth,
God shall send them strong delusion that they should believe a lie.

          • I think we have discovered, Joseph, that Rox does not actually know what is meant by ‘the Gospel’. That casts considerable doubt upon his assertion that certain church ministers under discussion ‘know what the Gospel is’.

  2. Thanks for highlighting fact that there are growing millions of Muslims in this country, where we have almost unlimited opportunities to share Christ with them. May God Almighty equip us for the challenge he’s set before us.

In Azad Kashmir (Pakistan) there are only 100-200 Christians. Those who are bold enough to witness to their faith are often beaten… and threatened with worse. God has brought 1 million Azad Kashmiris to UK, where there are thousands of Christians who can witness to them. Am I, are you taking this opportunity?

  3. The present situation is hardly surprising when so many of our church leaders have forsaken the gospel of Jesus Christ in favour of amusing stories which tickle the ears. The Christian church in Britain must recognise its responsibility to the people of this country and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ from every pulpit , from every street corner on every occasion when it is practical.
    A question : Do our Christian leaders realise the binding responsibility they took on when they pledged allegience to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?;

  4. We preach and proclaim a comfortable, non-challenging Christianity: too much of ‘Gentle Jesus, meek & mild’, instead of encouraging Christians to march ‘as to (spiritual) war’, to paraphrase Sir A Sullivan’s great hymn. We dare to challenge someone’s lifestyle or criticise an issue, in Christian love, yet we are met with the response ‘Who are we to judge?’
To quote Melanie Philips from her excellent book ‘Londonistan’ : In America the churches have been in the forefront of the defence of Western values. In Britain, by contrast, the Church of England has been in the forefront of the RETREAT (capitals mine) from the Judaeo-Christian heritage. At every stage it has sought to appease the forces of secularism, accomodating itself to family breakdown (eg), seeking to be non-judgmental and embracing multi-culturalism’ (which even Trevor Philips admitted doesn’t work and neither does Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones (UK’s first black farmer).

When will the churches nationwide call the faithful to a genuine, deep repentance leading to turning away from one’s past life (or indeed challenging one’s present life, eg, if living in sin with a partner) coupled with the warning that unless one turns to Jesus in true repentance there will be eternal consequences .. Jesus spoke about heaven but He also warned of hell, the eternal consequence of non-repentance and turning to Him: ‘I am the Way, the Truth & the Life, no-one comes to the Father but by Me’.
If our Christian witness was thus as it ought to be, and ought to have been for the last 60-odd years, who knows members of other faiths may have been challenged by it & desired to know more .. who knows it may have prevented or even challenged the worst extremes of Islam, as we witnessed 22nd May last, confirmed by yesterday’s Guilty verdict on both murderers. Who knows, they may not have been tempted to carry out their vile act.
Corresponding to this is the rise of multi-culturalism and the desire to appease other faiths and beliefs. ‘Under the cloak of multiculturalism, improving community cohesion, combating Islamophobia and removing prejudice, Western governments and public bodies are unwittingly supporting and partly funding a growing and sophisticated campaign of Muslim missionary activity (Barnabas Magazine July – August 2009)’.

  5. What needs to be asked is why the Western political elites, including that of Britain, protects and defends Islam, even when its adherents commit yet another outrage. I am strongly of the opinion that this is because Islam is being lined up to become the new ‘religion’ [sic] of the masses.

We constantly hear mainstream politicians claiming after one outrage or another claiming “This is not a true representation of Islam,” yet a study of the Quran with regard to the sections about Jihad will reveal how such outrages are fully in accordance with the supremacist political ideology of Islam. Are we expected to believe that they accumulate their knowledge of Islam from imams who speak ‘taqiyya’? How strange that these same mainstream politicians take the trouble to appear on television and radio to wish all Muslims a ‘happy Ramadan’, but never to do the same with regard to Christian festivals such as Easter and Christmas. Instead they perpetually secularise these Christian events under the guise of wanting to ‘cater to’ and avoid ‘offending’ those of other faiths. And when they refer to ‘other faiths’ they always mean, but never say, “Muslims”.

Yet it is not only the mainstream politicians that have indulged in this anti-Christian conspiracy. For that we can also look towards Christian Church leaders who, like the politicians, appear more intent in promoting the degenerate mind-bending agenda of Cultural Marxism than Christianity. No surprise that all these people are all supportive of the present government’s abolition of the National Census, because the next one would have exposed an exponential increase in the number of Muslims, which can only mean a big step towards the darkness of a future British Islamic Republic.

    • It’s part of a strategy to appease British Muslims by persuading them that they are all one of us, Muslim yes but also British, and opposed to extremism. This is not a bad idea, actually, because it is very important to prevent too many young Muslim men joining extremist causes, which very many young men are liable to do just for the excitement, or because of adolescent anxiety (not least the lack of sex if they are living in strict Muslim circumstances — it was bad enough in old-fashioned English boys’ schools). Moreover, British Muslims are well aware of being one of us in the sense that they don’t want to be on a bus which is bombed by a co-religionist, and it would be difficult to find a London bus with no Muslims on board.

Suicide bombing, why ? You have to be slightly crazy, wanting some excitement, depressed and at times suicidal, perhaps because you can get no sexual satisfaction. It offers a noble cause like fighting for King and Country, and you get loads of virgins at the end of it. No wonder it’s tempting, it’s tailor-made. The British government needs somehow to make it seem less attractive to those inclined towards it.

Do the same old virgins keep going round and round in Paradise, or do they keep issuing new ones in vast quantities ? Where do they come from ? What happens to the ex-virgins ? What reward does a devout Muslim woman get in Paradise ? Discussing these ticklish questions in schools might make people think.

  8. It is a spirit. because of the terminations of pregnancies (innocent blood) and 0ther big sins(e.g. sodomy) God (YHWH) is showing who is ruling. “Because ye serve not YAH in your own place for the good of all things, ye shall serve other gods ina place not yours for the want of all things.” Other gods influence is being seen because so many have rejected the Yah of the Bible. “Many shepherds have lead my poeple astray.”

  9. I think that it needs to be made clear that there is no such thing as a Muslim baby. God only sees a baby created in His own likeness.
Articles like this, seeped in prejudice, annoy me somewhat., Christians know what they should be doing and that is working to expand the Kingdom of God in Britain. The gates of hell dont prevail over the Church of Jesus Christ

      • Where I live there are some Muslim councillors, and I wouldn’t describe them as “the gates of hell”. That is over the top. Does Stephen mean that, or something different ?

I was intrigued by this :
” According to the data 12.5% of those identifying themselves as Muslim in Manchester in the 2011 census were aged between 0-4. ”

I don’t think there is any such thing as a Muslim baby either, but what is very clear is that no baby can identify itself as Muslim ! It is Mummy and Daddy (or even Grandad) who insists the baby is Muslim. It might very well change its mind when it becomes a teenager, and this is what everybody should be aiming at, without making it too obvious.

        • I agree with your previous comment, the church should be doing what you said it should and a whole lot more.
          The word says:
Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
If the rock is faith, as you and I no doubt believe, then a faithless church will not do much prevailing against the gates of hell. I think that is what I was trying to say.

  10. ‘IF the rock is faith….,,,’.
    Matthew 16:18,

“Thou art petros but upon this petra I buuild my church,…”.

    Strong’s exhaustive Concordance number4074 Petros–,piece of rock.
‘rock’ Number 4073, Petra, mass of rock.
Ephesians 2:20, And are built upon the foundation of the prophets and the
apostles,Christ him-self being the head corner stone.
Therefore, could I please suggest that the ‘rock’ ,Matthew 16:18, is not ‘faith’. but
Christ. The true church is built upon Christ.Ephesians 2:20.
