Major restaurants, take-aways and sporting venues are secretly serving up halal meat. In another twist to the scandal of lamb and chicken being dumped on all supermarket own-brand shelves with the exception of M&S and Morrisons, meat sacrificed to Allah is being served up in major fast-food outlets and popular pub chains.
THE RESTAURANT TRADE
Halal chicken and lamb are likely to emerge from the kitchens in Harvester, Toby, Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants. Whitbread, who own the latter two along with Premier Inns, have admitted that three-quarters of their poultry is halal. Mitchells and Butlers are responsible for Harvester, Toby and TravelLodge. They told Christian Voice that New Zealand lamb – of which 75% is halal – is being used as well as halal chicken in their outlets.
Traditionally, halal slaughtering was carried out without stunning, and many Muslim clerics still maintain that stunning of any sort means the animal is not ‘healthy’ when it is killed. But the Halal Food Authority now allows electric stunning, having been shown that animals can recover afterwards – if they are not cut in the meantime. So the problem is not principally one of animal welfare. Except in some franchises, the companies involved are adamant that the meat they use is from animals which are stunned before slaughter. But in many British abattoirs, a Muslim slaughterman is saying ‘Bismillah Allahu Akhbar’ (Arabic for: ‘In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest’) over a large proportion of the lamb and chicken which ends up on our tables or in take-away cartons.
SPORTING VENUES AND PIZZAS DO NOT TELL
As there is over-production of halal meat, a lot of it is dumped on the non-halal market. So sporting venues like Royal Ascot and Wembley are selling halal meat. All chicken at Ascot is halal because it is ‘easier to store and cook only one type of meat.’ But it is not advertised as halal, which begs the question as to why the venue went down that route in the first place. At Wembley, all beef, chicken and lamb is halal, so a football fan with an objection to creeping Islamification has to stick to sausage rolls or bacon sandwiches. Again, there is no honest labelling at Wembley, nor at Twickenham, another sporting venue serving up halal chicken.

Turning to the High Street, the burger chains, McDonalds, Burger King and Wimpy appear to be halal free, but pizza outlets Dominos and Pizza Hut both use halal chicken in their toppings, much of it from halal abattoirs abroad. Halal chicken is imported from Brazil , Thailand and Turkey , undercutting domestic producers. One might think to avoid halal completely by ordering a ham and pineapple or pepperoni pizza, but some independent pizza outlets in areas with a Muslim population refuse even to handle ‘haram’ meat, which largely means anything made from pork.
KEBABS, INDIANS AND FRIED CHICKEN
It is fair to say that every kebab shop will serve halal lamb and chicken, if for no other reason than that the kebab is a middle-eastern invention. The kebab meat will be sourced from specialist suppliers, and if any of them are not Muslim, it would be very surprising. The same goes for curry houses. Most ‘Indian’ restaurants are in fact run by Muslims, not Hindus, and any restaurant run by Muslims will serve up halal lamb and chicken and will not announce the fact on the menu.

The most famous fried chicken chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken, sources some chicken from abroad for its 780 shops, and has just under a hundred halal-only outlets, running as an on-going pilot. Southern Fried Chicken is the next biggest, with 400 branches, which all operate as franchises. Nearly all are halal, and we were told that many announce the fact on the window. Miss Millies, located around Bristol , are totally halal. It is fair to say most the fried chicken outlets are franchises (KFC is 50/50 franchise and company), and most operate in big towns. Muslims are concentrated in towns and are heavily involved in the take-away trade. Is it any surprise that a majority of chicken take-aways are halal? Halal outlets often have a halal sign visible outside, as much as to promote themselves amongst local Muslims as anything.
Nandos, the chicken-based restaurant and take-away chain, have 234 outlets. Of these, 61 are halal-only and some chicken in the others is halal. Subway operate as a franchise as well, and a significant number of franchisees have gone halal, some of which put a sign in the window. Some halal Subways are so strict they will not serve pork, so a ham and cheese ‘sub’ is not on the menu.
AN OPPORTUNITY
If there is no halal sign in the window or on the menu, the Christian customer can either keep quiet on St Paul’s ‘don’t ask’ principle (from 1 Cor 10:25) or ask the local restaurant or chicken take-away if they are serving halal meat or not. At the very least that is an opportunity to explain your point of view, and then to share the Gospel. The Scriptural witness on this matter has made me seriously review where I am prepared to eat. I used to like fried chicken take-aways and the odd lamb madras, but I can eat them no more without checking they are non-halal first. Of course there is always fish and chips.
READ: Lev 19:4; Psalm 96:5; Isa 2:18; Dan 1:8; Zech 13:2; Acts 15:20, 21:25; 1Cor 8:1-13, 10:18-28; Rev 2:14.20.
PRAY: That this information gets out and that there is an uprising of customer opinion expressed to the food industry. Whitbread told the Mail on Sunday they would ‘definitely’ provide information to let diners know their chicken was halal if their was ‘customer demand’ for it. So pray that the demand is shown. Christian Voice members have really made the big stores aware of the problem. Light is now even dawning at Sainsbury’s that it is the Islamic ‘Shahada’ or declaration that is the problem, not stunning. (It will take a miracle before the Co-op acknowledge any religious significance to the issue, but there we are.)
The same can easily be done with the restaurant and fast-food trade. Pray that the Lord guides and blesses this campaign and that He is glorified through it. As always, stress that it is the Islamic declaration to Allah, not the stunning issue, which is at the heart of your concerns.

BRITISH AIRWAYS STANDS FIRM
Britain ‘s leading airline has told Christian Voice that it has no intention of going halal-only, despite a Daily Mail story that its on-board catering supplier, Gate Gourmet, intended to become halal-only. Peter van Niekerk, head of GateGroup in the UK , said, ‘We are at the moment competing for some halal business and when we make that, the scale tips.’ He said the company would consult with customers such as BA and Cathay Pacific to ‘manage perceptions.’
But British Airways said bluntly: ‘While Gate Gourmet may be looking to produce more halal meals, our own in-flight catering is not changing. This means we will continue to provide halal meals at the request of individual passengers, on flights where this option is available.’
PRAY: Thank God for some good news!

It would be a good idea if there was a full list of outlets that only sell Halal meat we could then have a choice where to eat to match our beliefs either way. Choice is a good thing provided it extends beyond two choices,”Take it or Leave it”

Wait a day or so as we upgrade this website. In the meantime, shop at Morrisons or M&S and avoid New Zealand frozen lamb anywhere. As for eating out, Burger King, Wimpy and McDonalds are non-halal as are most KFC, but check on the door. Avoid small fried chicken outlets in big cities, kebabbies and Indian restaurants as they are virtually all Muslim owned. And don’t eat inside Wembley Stadium. Those are video links to our youtube channel, BTW.
[…] Christian Voice reported on the ‘secret halal’ problem over a year ago: […]
If the Islamic Shahada is the problem then what is wrong with it? It basically means “In the name of the one God, the merciful, the compassionate” Allah literally means ‘One God’. Fundamentally, this is what Christians believe too. It is important to understand that Allah is not a ‘Muslim god’ but the Arabic term for the ‘One All-Powerful God’.
What the Shahada said at the point of slaughter means is ‘In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest’. ‘Allah’ means ‘the God’.
The Bible says Almighty God sent his only-begotten son, Jesus Christ. The New Testament, settled 400 years before Mohammed lived, repeats and revolves around that truth. For example: Mark 1:11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, ‘Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’.
The Quran says:
Sura 17:111. Say: “Praise be to Allah, who begets no son…
Sura 19:35. It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son.
Sura 23:91. No son did Allah beget,…
(Among many passages where Allah denies having begotten a son.)
So if we take the Bible at its word and the Quran at its word, God has a son, Allah has no son, and the two are not the same being. Allah therefore must be a false god.
That means that I as a Christian, being forbidden to eat food sacrificed to false gods, may not eat halal meat sacrificed to Allah through the Shahada.
Dear Br. Stephen,
Jesus peace be upon him never said “I am GOD, worship me”. Son is stated in a metaphorical form and not literal but mean a chosen one like all his chosen prophets.
Mathew, Mark, Luke, John and Paul never walked, talked or even saw Jesus peace be upon him.
Read the Gospel of Barnabus.
Peace be upon that one who follows the true guidance.
You are quite wrong.
Firstly, the so-called ‘Gospel’ of Barnabas is a heretical work of fiction written no earlier than the 6th century to oppose the Christian view of Christ. It has never been part of the New Testament, and was not remotely part of the Bible (which the Quran calls ‘the Law and the Gospel’) in the time of Mohammed.
Secondly, among the evangelists both Matthew and John were disciples who walked and talked with the Lord and saw all Jesus did. Mark was the son of Mary whose house had the upper room where the last supper was held. Luke may have been an eyewitness but in any event he interviewed the eyewitnesses.
You should have more respect for the Bible, given that the Quran says:
(Surah 3 ayat 3): ‘It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).’
Thirdly, when God called out of heaven ”Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased’ (Luke 3:22) that was obviously more than a metaphor! We read in the New Testament: ‘For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?’ (Hebrews 1:5)
Fourthly, the Lord Jesus said he was God and to be worshiped when he said: ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.’ (John 8:58) ‘I am’ is the name of God, and we read the people wanted to stone him for what they saw as blasphemy.
And again when Jesus answered said, ‘My Father worketh hitherto, and I work’ we read ‘Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God’. (John 5:17-18)
And when he told the woman at the well that he was Messiah (John 4:26).
And when the high priest at his trial asked him ‘Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ Jesus said, ‘I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven’. (Mark 14:62)
At which point ‘the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? Ye have heard the blasphemy’. (Mark 14:63-64)
To understand why the high priest reacted like that to the expression ‘Son of man’ you need to look at the book of Daniel in the Old Testament (what the Quran calls ‘the law’):
Dan 7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
Dan 7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
Peace is only found in the Lord Jesus Christ. You will not find peace as a Muslim because you will never know whether Allah has forgiven your sins or not, whether you are going to paradise or to hell (unless you are martyred in the way of jihad, of course).
But Jesus said: ‘These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.’ (John 16:33)
The Apostle John says: ‘Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.’ (2John 1:3)
That is the only true guidance. As the Apostle Peter said of the Lord Jesus Christ:
‘Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.’ (Acts 4:12)
God also refers to us humans in general as his sons, its a metaphor to show that God cares for us like a father cares for his offsprings.
P.S. the name Allah is also used in the Arabic versions of the bible, which all arab christians follow…
And ‘Father’ is not one of the 99 beautiful names of Allah.
Alright halal food everywhere!! by the way Allah is an arabic term for God. By objecting to eat halal food you are objecting to eat food that has been slaughtered in the name of God. God bless your ignorance! or should I say, Allah bless your ignorance!
Peace be with you… (don’t take it as an offence) 😉
‘Al-lah’ means ‘the god’ which was what the devotees of Sin, the god of the black stone in Mecca, called him to distinguish him from all the other gods. Allah apparently had three daughters al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat (Al-Lat means ‘the goddess’) but in the Koran he denies having a son. In contrast, Almighty God, worshiped by Christians, begat one son, the Lord Jesus Christ – and no daughters!
you seem to be a learned man and so to see you make the horrific mistake of claiming allah ( by the way arab christians refer god as allah) HAS three daughters really questions your knowledge of islam. do not be ignorant.
peace be upon you.bye
You might dispute whether Allah had daughters (although it is well-documented).
You cannot dispute that the God whom Christians worship has begotten a son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who dwelt among us, was crucified, dead and buried, rose from the dead and ascended back to heaven according to the Bible which Mohammed knew and which the Quran commends.
Nor can you dispute that Allah, according to the same Quran which commends the Christian scriptures, has denied begetting a son.
Therefore, either the Almighty God whom Christians worship and the Allah of the Muslims are not the same being, or the Quran is wrong either in its endorsement of the Christian scriptures or in its statement that Allah has no son begotten.
Mr Stephen pls stop scaremongering with your extremist views. * Allah means 1 God, and if animals are slaughtered with a blessing from God how can this be harmful. Ps I think its well documented that Muslims believe in 1 God no equals, accept Jesus as a prophet on a par with Mohammad and that the black box is there as a guide for the direction to worship it is not the black box that is worshipped.
Thanks Sara, I think we have covered most of this in replies to comments on this thread!
This valuable post, “SECRET HALAL TAKEAWAY
Stephen, you are clearly not going to change your views on Islam (meaning peace) easily. But we Muslim’s do not knock Christianity as it has very close historic links with Islam, in fact we do not put down any religion or faith.
However it is a duty of any Muslim to explain what the teachings of Islam say, in order to help increase the knowledge of a third party (without any force or anger). This is essentially why god in the past has sent Prophets to help guide mankind in regards to what we should be doing and what should be avoided (how to lead the best life possible and prepare for the hereafter).
But I ask you this- if you believe there are so many errors in Islam / The holy Qur’an / Muslim history in general; then why is Islam the fastest growing faith/religion in the world and why are the largest proportion of people converting to Islam originally of Christian faith ?
The simple answer to this is that people all over the world are educating themselves and seeking guidance and knowledge. When one does look into the teachings further and speaks to leaders / preachers of different faiths and takes constructed approach to finding the truth, only then can one be truly satisfied with what essentially feels right to each individual!
You clearly are very knowledgeable in regards to your own faith/beliefs but you are far from qualified to be commenting on Islam and Muslims in general.
Your ridiculous endorsement of Allah (god) having three daughters is nothing short of gossip and highlights my previous point (may god forgive you for thinking such thoughts).
Seek the truth and further guidance from god and you too may one day be enlightened !
I look forward to your kind response, my god guide us all to the truth.
Why start off with a lie? ‘Islam’ means ‘submission’ or ‘surrender’ not ‘peace’.
http://muslimvoices.org/word-islam-meaning/:
‘In Arabic, the word “Islam” means submission or surrender – however, it was derived from the root word “salam”. From this root word, you can also derive the words peace and safety. Many people feel that Islam implies some sort of enslavement to Allah, but others find it more helpful to define the word “Islam” as surrender. …
‘The word does not represent a one-sided relationship, where the believer is enslaved to Allah. Rather, the word Islam indicates a covenant between Allah and his followers, where a Muslim surrenders his or her will to Allah in return for peace or safety.’
Why are westerners converting to Islam? Because they need rules, modesty, accountability and stability and modern churches have sadly forgotten those aspects of Christianity.
See our article: Islam growing at astronomical rate in the UK
I stopped reading any more of your comments when you said Allah has 3 daughters. Are you meant to be a learned person? What a horrendous mistake; it’s like saying the rainbow has 2 colours. This is elementary knowledge.
There’s ignorance and then there is extreme ignorance.
Here are the verses that talk of al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat.
So have you considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza?
And Manat, the third – the other one?
Is the male for you and for Him the female?
That, then, is an unjust division.
They are not but [mere] names you have named them – you and your forefathers – for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
53:19 – 23
The exegesis of the above verses can be found in this link.
http://www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1691&Itemid=109
I implore you, Sir, to do some reading before you make such incorrect statement. We must respect truth and if not that, at least respect ourselves so as to not make ourselves out to be so ignorant.
The first version went:
‘Have ye thought upon al-Lat and al-Uzza
And Manat, the third, the other? (53:19,20)’
Then, originally, the verses (known today as the satanic verses) followed:
‘These are the exalted cranes (intermediaries)
Whose intercession is to be hoped for.’
The three goddesses were always recognised as the daughters of Al-lah:

Thank You Stephen, now I know were not to eat some of these places I had suspicions of but was never sure now I know. Me and my family refuse to eat halal and think it is wrong that we are being given it secretly
