More than one thousand individuals in the United Kingdom were legally recognised as the opposite sex last year, marking the highest number recorded in nearly two decades.
Newly released figures from the Ministry of Justice reveal that 1,169 Gender Recognition Certificates (GRCs) were granted in the year ending March 2025 — more than triple the number issued in 2019–20. Only the first year of the scheme, 2005–06, saw slightly higher numbers at 1,181.
To receive a GRC and an amended birth certificate, applicants must demonstrate they have lived in the opposite gender role for two years, possess a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, and pass review by an official panel.
The Gender Recognition Act, which came into force in 2004, has facilitated a total of 9,633 such recognitions. In 2021, the government reduced the application fee from £140 to just £5, and the process moved online the following year — both measures that may have contributed to the recent increase.
A generation misled?
Disturbingly, nearly one-quarter of GRCs issued last year went to individuals under the age of 25.
Of all certificates issued, over two-thirds were granted to those born after 1990 — a statistic that raises deep concerns about the cultural and educational influences shaping young minds.
Marriage remains a consideration under the Act; in nearly ten per cent of cases, applicants were married, and spousal consent was legally required to finalise the change.
Freedom of Information disclosures reveal that between 2021 and 2023, over two thousand males were referred by the NHS Gender Dysphoria National Referral Support Services for what is termed “feminising genital surgery.”
Alarmingly, some of these patients were just 18 years old, and over a third of those who underwent surgery at Nuffield Health were under 30.
Stephanie Davies-Arai, founder of Transgender Trend, sounded the alarm: “This is the same cohort of young people indoctrinated as children into believing they have a gender identity and that they are trans, now being referred into adult clinics for irreversible procedures. This is not what medicine is for.”

A crossroads for medicine and morality
Ms Davies-Arai’s words reflect a growing unease among many families and faith communities who see this trend not as progress, but as a troubling departure from truth and biological reality.
She warned: “This will leave these young people with medical problems for the rest of their lives — problems which the NHS will ultimately have to manage.”
The irreversible nature of surgical interventions — involving permanent alterations to healthy bodies — flies in the face of the medical ethos to “first, do no harm.” Yet even as physical changes are made, no surgery can alter God-given identity or erase the spiritual, emotional, and psychological toll such decisions often carry.

Upholding biological reality
Earlier this year, in a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court upheld the definition of “man,” “woman,” and “sex” as biological realities under the Equality Act 2010.
In a unanimous decision, the UK’s highest court sided with the group For Women Scotland, rejecting guidance from the Scottish Government which allowed males with a GRC to occupy positions reserved for women on company boards.
The Justices noted that the legislation could only “function coherently” if sex was interpreted biologically, particularly in areas such as women’s spaces, single-sex services, shared accommodation, and educational institutions.
Their final judgement declared: “The Scottish Government’s guidance is incorrect. A person with a GRC in the female gender does not come within the definition of ‘woman’ for the purposes of sex discrimination in section 11 of the Equality Act.”
This ruling brings much-needed legal clarity and moral encouragement in a time of confusion. For Christians who believe in God’s design for humanity, this affirmation of biological truth is a welcome development — and a reminder that while public sentiment may shift, God’s truth remains unchanging.
