DIWALI – A PARENTS’ GUIDE

INTRODUCTION
The Hindu festival of Diwali falls in late October or early November, which for British schools makes the autumn term Diwali-time.  This paper expresses deep misgivings about children participating in Hindu practice, and reminds parents that they have an absolute right under the Education Reform Act 1988 to remove their children from religious education and assemblies.  However, we believe it better for schools not to observe the Diwali festival at all, and we present evidence in this paper to help Christian parents approach teachers with their concerns.
