Christians Protest Over Jesus Slur

0

Christians mounted a protest this morning against an article in the South Wales Echo, which was also published on the paper’s website in association with Cardiff ‘s leading firm of solicitors.

The article, by Dan O’Neill, was published in the South Wales Echo on Wednesday 16th July and then put up on the Echo website where it was published ‘in association with’ Hugh James.

In the article, O’Neill firstly declares that the Bible is not the word of God. It was written by ‘a wild-eyed Bronze Age nomad’, he rages.

Then, in a remarkable display of ignorance of the social mores of the Holy Land in the 1st Century, he remarks that Jesus Christ could be accused of homosexuality because the Apostles were all male.

Not content with that, he says it is ‘suspicious’ that Jesus ‘picks up small boys and girls and puts his hands upon them.’ From there, the piece descends into a bigoted rant against Christianity.

This morning, a group of Christians gave leaflets about the matter to staff going in to the Hugh James offices in St Mary’s Street , Cardiff and met Rachel Rhys-Jones, who is in charge of the firm’s marketing.

From there, they moved to the office of Media Wales where they occupied the reception area, singing hymns and praying out loud before meeting with Simon Farrington, one of the Managing Editors.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said afterwards:

‘The senior partner at Hugh James, Gareth Williams, bears ultimate responsibility for allowing his firm to be associated with such a disgraceful attack on the Christian Faith by Media Wales.

‘He should pull his firm’s support for the South Wales Echo, apologise to his firm’s Christian staff and clients and cancel any further association with Media Wales.

We made it very clear to Simon Farrington that Media Wales should immediately take down the article from the web and publish an apology in the paper and on the web. He should also sack Dan O’Neill, whose column long since ceased to have any relevance to Wales in the 21st century.

‘Media Wales are moving offices at the moment, with their current premises scheduled for demolition. If Mohammed had been called a homosexual and a paedophile in their paper, they would not have to wait for the demolition teams to arrive. But they think they can attack the Christian faith with impunity. Today we showed that even though we would never resort to violence, Christians can mount a swift and effective witness against evil. We now look forward to a positive and gracious response from Media Wales.’

BBC Go For Pound of Flesh Over Springer Costs

0

The BBC have just sent a bailiff to serve a statutory demand on Christian activist Stephen Green in respect of Mark Thompson’s costs of £55,000 in the Jerry Springer the Opera case.

The demand could see Green made bankrupt and homeless.

The High Court ruled last December that Stephen Green could not prosecute Mark Thompson, the Director General of the BBC, and Jonathan Thoday of Avalon over the BBC2 broadcast of Jerry Springer the Opera and its subsequent theatre tour. The Court ordered costs against him.

Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday were awarded costs totalling £90,000 against Green, who is the National Director of the prayer and lobby group Christian Voice. The BBC’s solicitors were awarded £55,000 and Olswangs Solicitors, who acted for Thoday, got an order for £35,000.

The costs order is better than it could have been; the BBC originally demanded almost £78,000 after instructing David Pannick QC, probably the most expensive barrister they could find, while Thoday wanted over £58,000.

Last month, Stephen Green wrote to both Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday inviting them to waive their costs in the interests of goodwill and justice. The appeal to the better nature of Thompson has fallen on deaf ears.

Thompson screened Jerry Springer the Opera on BBC2 in January 2005, attracting 55,000 protests, and the show itself ran at the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden before Avalon sent it on a badly-attended tour in 2006 over which Thoday said he lost £500,000.

Stephen Green, who brought the action over Jerry Springer the Opera in his own name, said today:

‘Jerry Springer the Opera portrayed Jesus Christ as a nappy-wearing sexual deviant, who said he was ‘a little bit gay’. It called Mary a rape victim, said the birth of Jesus was because ‘the condom split’, ridiculed His wounds on the cross and the sacrament of Holy Communion, had God as an ineffectual old man who needed guidance from Jerry Springer and finished up with Springer as a counterfeit saviour of mankind who told Jesus to “Grow up for Christ’s sake and put some f***ing clothes on.”

‘It should be enough for Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday that they got away with blasphemy, insulting God and the Lord Jesus Christ, at least in this life. For these rich, powerful men to pursue me into the bankruptcy courts over money I don’t have would be vindictive.’

Both sets of solicitors have also threatened to chase the donors who gave the money for the original action, but it is far from clear that a court would allow that. Even if it did, Green is adamant that he will protect the donors’ identity, even if that puts him in contempt of court.

‘I should go to prison rather than reveal their names, even if I could remember who they were,’ he told both Thompson and Thoday.

The BBC is currently wasting £18million a year on a Gaelic TV channel, £150million on BBC3 and BBC4, its well-heeled bosses spent millions changing their logo and they have just splashed out £550,000 on a completely unnecessary rebrand of the News. They have been in the public eye recently over the obscene sums of money they are paying presenters, with Jonathan Ross getting £18million for a three year contract. The BBC accounts show Mark Thompson was paid over £800,000 last year, an amount per year almost 25 times as much as Green is worth.

Stephen Green continued: ‘Mark Thompson could easily pay his own costs out of his inflated salary, and the BBC certainly would never notice the odd £55,000 alongside the money they squander on a daily basis.

‘I do not have the money anyway, and will end up bankrupt and homeless if Thompson continues with to try to enforce these punitive costs.’

Christian Voice Director Faces Bankruptcy

1

A Christian activist who tried to charge the BBC’s Director General and the producer of Jerry Springer the Opera with blasphemy is facing bankruptcy over a ‘grotesque’ costs order.

In a hearing a fortnight ago, Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday were awarded costs totalling £90,000 against Green, who is the National Director of the prayer and lobby group Christian Voice.

The money is due to be paid today, but Stephen Green doesn’t have it.

He has written to both Mark Thompson and Jonathan Thoday inviting them to waive their costs in the interests of goodwill and justice.

Mark Thompson’s own salary was £609,000 in 2005/6 and must be around £750,000 now. Added to that, the solicitors in the BBC’s legal department are on the payroll anyway; the BBC is not even out of pocket in that regard.

Avalon represents entertainers such as Frank Skinner, David Badiel, Harry Hill and Al Murray. Its TV production arm has supplied shows involving most of its own entertainers to TV channels.

Stephen Green continued: ‘Mark Thompson earns well over twenty times as much in a year as I am worth. He could pay his own costs out of his inflated salary, and the BBC certainly would never notice the odd £55,000 alongside the money they squander on a daily basis.

‘Jonathan Thoday can easily afford to waive his costs as well. He lost £500,000 over the failed tour of Jerry Springer the Opera in 2006, and didn’t bat an eyelid, so he isn’t exactly short of money either. Seven years ago, in 2001, he featured in the Independent’s Media Rich List, with a personal fortune estimated then at £12million.

‘Quite simply, I do not have the money anyway, and will be certainly end up bankrupt if Thompson and Thoday decide to enforce these punitive costs.’

Human Rights barrister Paul Diamond said the case raises issues under the European Convention of Human Rights about access to the courts.

Stephen Green concluded: ‘How are people with limited means expected to bring actions of public importance against public bodies or wealthy people? It is outrageous that a public-spirited individual should be dissuaded from upholding standards of public decency in a public body because of the fear of adverse, grotesque costs orders.’

NOTE for editors: The European Court have previously held that in certain circumstances legal aid must be granted to individuals to enable them to pursue their case. In the same way an impecunious claimant should not be subject to an adverse costs order which would deter other individuals from access to the courts where it as reasonable to have legal representation and the other party is a public body.

Atheists to Blaspheme – in Private!

0

The abolition of the blasphemy laws received Royal Assent on 8th May, and to celebrate, the atheists of the National Secular Society plan to do something they could safely have done even while the laws were still in existence.

They are going to hold a secret private party ‘at a central London venue’ at lunchtime on Saturday 21st June at which they can all blaspheme to each other.

The event, for which all tickets have already been sold, is to be called the ‘Bye Bye Blasphemy Party’. The NSS say it will feature ‘a gorgeous buffet lunch’ and ‘entertainment’.

http://truckdriver.blog-city.com/wwwsecularismorguk_39.htm

Their centre-piece, the bravest and most defiant thing they can think of doing, is to have Sir Ian McKellen reading the ‘Gay News poem’, The love that dares to speak its name.

The secluded Jesus-haters will thrill to the sound of the ‘gay’ actor intoning a pornographic homosexual fantasy of what a Roman soldier wanted to do with the crucified body of Christ.

http://truckdriver.blog-city.com/wwwsecularismorguk_45.htm

Terry Sanderson and Keith Pompous Wood, the homosexual partners-in-perversion who run the National Secular Society, also plan ‘special guests’ and ‘loads of surprises’.

One surprise they won’t want their ‘special guests’ to have is to be confronted by a Christian witness and evangelists outside the venue. So they aren’t saying where it is.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘The funny thing is, the mad and the bad could easily have shut themselves up in a room somewhere and read James Kirkup’s dirge to their hearts’ content at any time during the last thirty years. No-one would have known, and no-one will know this time, even when they proudly claim afterwards to have done it.

‘The blasphemy laws have been abolished, but there could never have been a prosecution for blasphemy over this hole-in-corner event while the laws were still in existence anyway. Where would a prosecutor find the evidence? Even if McKellen were to excite his audience with his stunt of tearing anti-gay pages out of a Bible as an encore, no-one would ever know.

‘If they announced the venue and made the occasion open to the public, that would be different. But they daren’t do that.

‘It just goes to show that despite abolition of the blasphemy laws, no-one with any sense is going to insult Jesus Christ publicly in the United Kingdom . No theatre will risk putting on a blasphemous show after what happened to ‘Jerry Springer the Opera’, broadcasters aren’t going to risk a deluge of mail descending on their directors or governors, and supermarkets won’t stock blasphemous DVDs. In the arts, Anita Zabludowicz will never show her blasphemous statue of Jesus Christ in public again, because she knows what will happen to it.

‘And if the fanatics of the NSS don’t dare to blaspheme in the open, it is hard to see who will.

‘So it really is “Bye bye blasphemy”, and not at all in the way they meant.’

Free Speech Clause Exposes Atheist Hypocrisy

See How Your MP Voted

An amendment ensuring people are free to criticise homosexual activities and to run sexual healing ministries has passed into law after a stand-off between the Lords and the Commons.

The clause, moved by Lord Waddington in the House of Lords, was inserted into the Government’s Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill in reaction to a new homosexual ‘hate crime’ law.

In practice, although the new law criminalises behaviour which would ‘stir up hatred on grounds of sexual orientation’ it has to be ‘intended’ to do so and it has to be ‘threatening’. There is as little prospect of anyone being charged under it as there is of anyone being charged under the 2006 Racial and Religious Hatred Act which outlawed ‘threatening’ behaviour intended to stir up religious hatred. In addition, the Crown Prosecution Service must gain the approval of the Attorney General in every case, which gives each prosecution a political dimension.

There have consequently been no prosecutions under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act, and it is hard to see how there could be. The law was largely symbolic, just as the new law will be. That does not make it unimportant; the Government used the Racial and Religious Hatred Law to justify abolition of the blasphemy laws.

In addition, there is always the concern that people will feel so under threat from a law such as this that they will feel inhibited from expressing their opinions – the so-called ‘chilling effect’ on freedom of speech. The free speech clause in the 2006 Act was also inserted to prevent politically-correct policemen turning up on doorsteps to intimidate people who were merely engaging in the cut and thrust of religious debate.

That is why, as the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill was going through Parliament in 2005, atheist politicians Dr Evan Harris MP and Lord Lester of Herne Hill were to the fore in promoting a ‘free speech’ clause (which Christian Voice supported). Their clause wrote on the face of the Bill that ‘discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse’ of religions and belief systems were exempt from its provisions.

Now, in the case of the sexual orientation equivalent, the same two politicians were suddenly opposed to freedom of speech.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘There is a famous quote attributed to Voltaire, another opponent of Christianity, that says: “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Today’s atheists are unencumbered by such noble sentiments. Now it is: “I disagree with what you say, and I will defend to the death my right to shut you up.”

‘While Christians campaigned for both these freedom of speech clauses, the atheists only want freedom of speech where it suits them. And it does not suit them to have homosexuality, that overweening expression of rebellion against God’s created order, criticised, ridiculed or insulted. As it happens, in his bid to get his clause accepted, Lord Waddington even had to take out the words ‘expressions of antipathy’. So ordinary decent people aren’t really supposed to be disgusted by homosexuality.

‘Nevertheless, the absence of those words should not matter. Even without them, no one should fear a knock on the door for expressing their opinion about homosexuality. But the passage of the Bill has shone a torch into the dark corners of atheist hypocrisy, and for that we should be both amused and grateful.

NOTES:

RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS HATRED ACT 2006
The Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 (why the words ‘Racial and’ were there when it had nothing to do with racial hatred is a good question) amended the Public Order Act 1986.

The exact form of words, from the 2006 Act, is:

‘A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred.’

The deletion of ‘insulting’ and ‘abusive’ from the original wording of the religious hatred offence means that to prove ‘threatening behaviour’ is now a very high mountain for any prosecution to scale. The fact that the permission of the Attorney General is needed before a case can even be brought adds an additional hurdle, and one of a political nature.

However, despite that provision, it was feared that over-zealous policemen could arrest or harass anyone who merely criticised another religion.

For that reason, as the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 was going through Parliament, the Government was forced to concede this qualification on the face of the 2006 Act, under the heading ‘Protection of freedom of expression’

‘Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system.’

The two main parliamentary protagonists for this freedom of speech clause were Dr Evan Harris MP in the Commons and Lord Lester of Herne Hill in the House of Lords.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND IMMIGRATION ACT 2008
The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 has further amended the Public Order Act 1986 by inserting the words ‘or hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation’ after ‘stir up religious hatred’ in the definition above. So it now reads:

‘A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred or hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.’

The permission of the Attorney General is still needed before a case can be brought.

However, despite that provision, the experience of people who had been intimidated by the police for voicing opinions hostile to homosexuality even without the new law showed that there was still a problem from policemen prejudiced against Christianity in particular. The case in which the Bishop of Chester, a member of the House of Lords, was investigated by the police for saying the homosexuality could be treated and overcome showed that mere guidelines would not work. A freedom of expression clause was needed on the face of the Act. The one successfully moved by Lord Waddington was in the end much weaker in tone than its religious hatred equivalent. Under the heading ‘Protection of freedom of expression (sexual orientation),’ it says this:

‘In this Part, for the avoidance of doubt, the discussion or criticism of sexual conduct or practices or the urging of persons to refrain from or modify such conduct or practices shall not be taken of itself to be threatening or intended to stir up hatred.’

The two main parliamentary opponents of this freedom of speech clause were Dr Evan Harris MP in the Commons and Lord Lester of Herne Hill in the House of Lords.

Christian Voice Killed My Musical – Stewart Lee

2

God honoured Christian Voice campaign:
Author says he wouldn’t do another Jerry Springer the Opera

Following a House of Commons vote last night, the blasphemy laws will be abolished as soon as the Government’s Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill receives Royal Assent.  Paradoxically, with Christians determined to make even more dramatic witness now it has gone, writers and producers are highly unlikely to risk staging anything insulting Almighty God or Jesus Christ in future, at least if they have the sense to listen to Stewart Lee.

Lee has blamed Christian Voice for the death of his brainchild musical Jerry Springer the Opera and now says he wouldn’t work on anything controversial on a similar scale again.

The comedians’ website ‘Chortle’ said that the musical, which they say Lee spent years developing, ‘suffered financially’ when Christian Voice orchestrated a highly successful campaign against it during 2005 and 2006.

And even though the High Court and the House of Lords ruled against a bid by Christian Voice National Director Stephen Green to bring a private blasphemy prosecution Lee said the furore would stop people investing time in controversial shows.

‘There would be no point writing anything with any religious content which would require big box office receipts or public funding to float it, as a fuss like this could wipe it out instantly,’ he told the obsessive free-speech group ‘Index On Censorship’.  ‘Idiots’, said Lee, ‘could too easily close it down’. (Chortle: 10/12/2007)

http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2007/12/10/6141

TOUR WAS A FINANCIAL DISASTER
Even the partisan Polly Toynbee, an ‘honorary associate’ of the rabidly anti-Christian National Secular Society, agreed with Lee in an article in the Guardian on 27th June 2006:

‘The tour was a financial disaster after fundamentalist Christians attacked the tour,’ she wailed. ‘Far from all publicity being good publicity, it put off the usual audience for musicals, who assumed this show must be all filth, shock and schlock. Fear of running the gauntlet of rabid zealots also kept many away. Many theatres pulled out and ticket sales were low. No wonder evangelicals gloat on their websites that they have won and that the production is “under a curse” financially. Censorship has many weapons.’

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2006/jun/27/arts.theatre

Lee, says Chortle, ‘first starting working on the show with composer Richard Thomas in 2001 at the Battersea Arts Centre. Versions were staged at the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe and at the National Theatre in 2003 before transferring to the West End .’

The blasphemous second act, in which the Lord Jesus Christ is portrayed as a sexual deviant, or, to be specific, as an infantile coprophiliac who is ‘a little bit gay’, was added during the development process.

CHRISTIAN VOICE WROTE TO REGIONAL THEATRES
When the BBC drew the attention of Christians to the final version of the show by screening it on BBC2 in January 2005, Christian Voice wrote to hundreds of regional theatres just as Jerry Springer the Opera was being scheduled to tour.

Lee said: ‘At the time, the Incitement to Racial and Religious Hatred Bill was hanging around in its unmodified form, and Christian Voice were able to exploit the woolly wording to give theatres the impression they could be prosecuted for staging JSTO, so we lost loads of venues and the tour went ahead but was not financially viable.’

The letter from Christian Voice warned of prosecutions for blasphemy and protests and drew attention to the poor attendance for the show in its dying days at the Cambridge Theatre in London ‘s Covent Garden in February 2005. More than a dozen venues, including the Derby Playhouse and the Guildhall, Portsmouth , pulled out.

Toynbee complains: ‘After more than a third of the theatres pulled out in panic, only 23 weeks of bookings remained – too few to have any chance of recouping costs. The authors waived their royalties and the producers decided to take the loss; the Arts Council tipped in a little so people in the regions could see something they regarded as excellent.’

ARTS COUNCIL PULLED FUNDING
In fact, the Arts Council pulled their main funding for the show after the initial furore, and rightly or wrongly, as the Arts Council will never admit to bowing to pressure, Christian Voice got the blame. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/4261796.stm

Their subsequent funding was on a much small scale, to only three theatres.  http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/pressnews/press_detail.php?rid=10&id=587

But the public simply didn’t agree that Jerry Springer the Opera was ‘excellent’ or even worth seeing at all, after a Christian Voice campaign in which audiences at theatres staging the show were lobbied for weeks in advance of JSTO turning up and then on the night.  Tens of thousands of evangelistic leaflets informing theatre-goers of the content of the show were given out.  As a result, only Newcastle ‘s Theatre Royal managed to cover a third of its seats during the run.  Many struggled to get a quarter full.  Toynbee moans: ‘Most local reviews were raves, but too late for ticket sales.’

In the end, the producers Avalon admitted they lost between £300,000 and £half-a-million, although Avalon’s boss Jonathan Thoday, with a personal fortune given as £12m in the Indy’s media richlist even in 2001, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/the-media-rich-list-751541.html could easily afford that, Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas, the show’s creators, waived their royalties, David Soul was replaced by Rolf Saxon in the title role, the cast-list was cut by a third and every single theatre made a thumping loss of tens of thousands of pounds of council-tax-payers’ money.

CLOSED DOWN BY ‘IDIOTS’
Lee says, ‘I’d never become involved to such a degree on something on such a big scale if there was the possibility of it being effectively closed down like this.

‘I can’t afford not to be paid for years and years of work on the whim of idiots. That said, no one ever saw this coming. What people take offence at, or choose to be offended by, will always be unpredictable.’

However, as Jerry Springer the Opera was stuffed to the gills with (as the late blasphemy law put it) contemptuous, scurrilous, reviling, abusive and ludicrous representations of God, Jesus Christ, the Bible and the sacraments of the Church, Lee has to have been myopic or ignorant not to have foreseen that there would be an outcry if his show ever poked its nose outside the normal haunts of the artistic elite.

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS BAD PUBLICITY AFTER ALL
As it was, the outcry was enormous, with 55,000 protests to the BBC and then protests at every single theatre on the doomed tour.  Even before the show opened, Christian Voice had been blamed for poor ticket sales in an article in the Guardian (27/01/2006).

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/jan/27/arts.artsnews

At the same time, the news agency Reuters observed ‘There is such a thing as bad publicity after all’ and quoted Jonathan Thoday as saying: ‘Christian Voice are winning the audience battle’.

http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.religion.christian/msg02776.html

The Royal Family even became involved in the controversy.  Prince Edward is patron of His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen , which was one of the theatres involved, so when he attended a public church service, all those attending were given a leaflet calling on him to resign.  The Prince was forced to claim he was only patron of the theatre’s rebuilding fund.  As the tour limped around Britain , theatre managers struggled to put a brave face on a growing disaster.  The Fairfield Halls in Croydon cancelled three out of eight performances of Jerry Springer the Opera as its Chief Executive Derek Barr, after failing to get his theatre out of its contract with Avalon, admitted: “Maybe we should have avoided it.’

http://www.croydonguardian.co.uk/news/localnews/display.var.813470.0.php

A THOUSAND CHRISTIAN PROTESTERS ON THE FIRST NIGHT
According to Polly Toynbee: ‘Stewart Lee says a thousand Christian protesters turn up on the first night in big cities. In Leicester some of the cast were turned out of their B&Bs. The Archbishop of Wales tried to get the show stopped at the Wales Millennium Centre. The Scottish cancer charity Maggie’s Centres dared not accept the money from a gala performance when Christian Voice told it doing so would “upset Christians all over the world”.’

Toynbee urged theatre-goers to take the ‘last chance’ to ‘beat the bigots’ by going to see the show at its closing venue, the Brighton Dome, of which she is a patron. Not many took her up on it. She wrote in her June 2006 article: ‘Jerry Springer the Opera reaches the end of its noisy tour next week with a grand finale at the Brighton Dome. It will have made a hefty loss for its producers, who toured it despite knowing that trouble would dog it and that it would lose money. But they were determined not to let the evangelicals win.’

THE EVANGELICALS DID WIN!
Of course, as a comment on her article said: ‘But since producers primarily put shows on to make money, and they lost money, the evangelicals DID win.’

Or, more properly, Almighty God won – and made fools of His enemies.

In an interview in November 2006, Stewart Lee said that the protests ‘soured’ his nomination for an Olivier Award. ‘On a basic level, it meant we never really broke even, or saw much money for it, as it was effectively closed down. Secondly, it has made me think there’s no point trying to do anything any good on a mass-level, as ****s will sabotage it. Also, though I am proud of my contribution, I am now sick to death of talking about the thing, which is ruined for ever for me.’

The quaintly-named magazine and website ‘The Freethinker’ (where you are free to think anything you like as long as it’s atheist) agrees that projects insulting Jesus Christ are now not likely to see the light of day because of ‘self-censorship’.  While it would be better if self-control and common courtesy were the reasons, it is good that the worlds of atheism and the arts are taking notice.

http://www.freethinker.co.uk/2007/12/15/how-religion-stifles-art-lesson-901/

DON’T INSULT JESUS CHRIST IN THE UK
In Christian Voice, we take no credit for the Springer disaster. Our prayer led us to do a few basic things, and while doing them, we learnt how to combine witness with evangelism to great effect.  All those who said that by giving it publicity we would inadvertently make Jerry Springer the Opera an even bigger success were proved precisely wrong.  Almighty God honoured us for standing up for Him and He confounded His enemies.

But Stewart Lee’s message to his fellow atheists in the world of the arts is clear: Whatever happens in other countries is up to them; just don’t even think about staging anything insulting Jesus Christ in the United Kingdom.

Chief Rabbi is killing civility

0

In an perceptive Telegraph article headed: ‘In a land without morals, it’s no wonder children kill each other‘, author Jeff Randall quoted the Chief Rabbi.  Here is what he said:

‘ Britain ‘s Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, sums up the anxieties of many: “We are living through the death of civility … Today, it is commonplace to encounter road rage, muggings, street crime, drunkenness, lager louts, hoodies, yobbishness and laddishness. Teachers are attacked in the classroom. Nurses encounter violence from patients.”‘

Yes, indeed, the death of civility.  Now could this be the same Chief Rabbi who has repeatedly failed to condemn the blasphemous, pornographic, thoroughly uncivil statue of Jesus Christ with a phallus stuck on the front, owned by his well-healed friends Poju and Anita Zabludowicz?  The statue which they stubbornly kept on public display at the Baltic Centre in Gateshead earlier this year knowing full well it was offending good taste and decency and the civilised values of ordinary people including Christians, among them Christian friends of Israel and the Jewish people?  The statue they still refuse to destroy, making their friend the Chief Rabbi look like a total hypocrite when he calls piously for people to respect what others hold sacred?  www.chiefrabbi.org/articles/tftd/03feb06.htm

Yes sadly it is the same Chief Rabbi, and the same statue.  And the Chief Rabbi just cannot stop pontificating about the importance of civilised values, despite failing to display them in his own ministry and his chums trampling them in the mud.  ‘Can I respect your faith?’ he asked in Thought for the Day.  www.chiefrabbi.org/articles/tftd/03feb06.htm

No, Sir Jonathan, you can’t.  We are living through the death of civility.  And what a shame it is that you and your friends are helping to kill it.

‘Jesus’ Porn Film Could Be Licensed

0

The Observer has reported that film censors have invited the maker of a film showing Christ being caressed on the cross to resubmit an application in the wake of the House of Lords vote to abolish the blasphemy laws.

The British Board of Film Classification refused a licence for Visions of Ecstasy, which showed St Teresa of Avila caressing the body of Jesus in 1989 on the grounds that it was blasphemous.

Nigel Wingrove, the film’s director, appealed against the UK to the European Court of Human Rights but was ruled against. The UK , said the Court, had every right to have a blasphemy law.

Now, Craig Lapper, Chief Assistance (policy) of the board’s examining body, has invited Wingrove to resubmit the film for classification.  It makes one wonder whether the role of the BBFC is to adjudicate on what is sent to it, or to go scurrying around for rotting morsels in the dustbins of sleaze.

Wingrove himself is now a distributor of horror movies, and admitted that the invitation to resubmit his 19-minute pornographic shoot had come ‘completely out of the blue’. He said he was ‘in two minds’ about whether to agree. ‘People say I should put it out, but on a personal level I have reservations. If I did release it, I would need to put it into context and perhaps release a documentary to accompany it.’

Wingrove believes the board is now largely ‘irrelevant’ because the internet has circumvented its ability to censor, but the Observer claims that ‘secular groups’ will be using him as a pawn, encouraging him to seek a release licence as a way of signalling the death knell of the blasphemy law.

Terry Sanderson, the homosexual president of the National Secular Society, who lives in Ealing with its creepy Executive Director, Keith Pompous Wood, said the blasphemy law ‘put into the hands of bigots a weapon to punish those who want to criticise or satirise religion. We hope that the BBFC will now give a certificate to Visions of Ecstasy as a signal to film makers that they need no longer censor themselves when exploring religious themes.’

Nevertheless, Visions of Ecstasy was never about criticism or satire of religion. Wingrove himself said: ‘I was exploring areas of dark eroticism’. It was a porn film blaspheming Christ as a selling point.

Mr Wingrove’s production companies have names like Purgatory Films, Gothica Films, Salvation Films and Redemption Films. Themes of sex and violence predominate in what are brazenly described as ‘exploitation cinema’. Do not make the mistake of visiting his website where films with titles like Satanic Sluts, Slashers and Killer’s Moon are offered. The latter, which dates from 1978, is described on the website as ‘a truly nasty little film’ with ‘no moral restraint’. The BBFC gave it an X-certificate. This is truly another world which should not exist in a civilised nation.

PRAY: That Nigel Wingrove will not resubmit Visions of Ecstasy.  Pray for him, that his troubled soul will find rest in the Lord Jesus Christ.  He needs to know where salvation and redemption are really found.

Blasphemy Law Abolition ‘Will Bring Judgment’

0

The Government forced abolition of the blasphemy laws through the House of Lords last night (5th March 2008) by whipping the Labour vote. Lord Clarke of Hampstead, Lord Davies of Coity and Lord Kirkhill all rebelled against their party’s whip but it was not enough as the vote went through by 148 votes to 87.

There were tremendous speeches by Baroness O’Cathain, Lord Armstrong of Ilminster, Lord Davies of Coity, Lord Forsyth of Drumlean, Lord Kingsland QC, Lord Neill of Bladen, Baroness Park of Monmouth and Lord Selsdon in favour of keeping the blasphemy laws. Lord Elton was in blistering form as well, and the Bishop of Chester also spoke up for righteousness. He was joined by the Bishops of Rochester and Southwell in the ‘No’ lobby.

Sad to say, the Bishops of Durham and Portsmouth both spoke and voted to allow evil men to insult and vilify their Lord. The Archbishop of York made a Guardian editorial of a speech and then abstained from the vote in a depressing night for the Christian majority in Britain and for Anglicans in particular.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said this morning:

‘This is a sad day for the United Kingdom. Parliament has set the honour of Almighty God at nought just to please a few hard-line secularists. There is no doubt that those against abolition won the debate, but the ‘Noes’ lost the vote in the face of the shameful Labour whip.

‘The Earl of Onslow scoffed at the capacity of the Lord Jesus Christ to bring judgment against those responsible for blasphemy, but it is the judgment of God against this United Kingdom as a whole which troubles me. I do not know in what form it will fall, whether in some dramatic way, or whether simply in an increasing culture of crassness, disrespect and inhumanity. But fall it will, and we shall have only ourselves to blame.

‘By the grace of God, Christians will continue to protest against blasphemy, as we did so successfully over the tour of Jerry Springer the Opera. Through the relentless witness and evangelism which I helped to organise, the Lord reduced the tour to a financial disaster, and its director, Stewart Lee, has said it will never be shown in this country again.

‘That leaves us with Anita Zabludowicz’s lewd and blasphemous statue to which, interestingly enough, the Bishop of Durham referred in the debate – and in less than flattering terms. The blasphemy laws would have provided the most appropriate way of dealing with this case, which is an insult against the Lord Jesus Christ. It may be there is another way in which the law can call those responsible for this outrage to account, but it will not be nearly as effective or send as strong a signal about the central place of Christianity in our constitution.

‘I believe that one way or another, and by God’s grace, there isn’t going to be blasphemy in this United Kingdom. It is a pity that it will probably have to be stopped in many cases without recourse to the law, but obviously the Lord is calling Christians to stand up for His holiness in other ways in these God-defying days.’

Blasphemy: Atheist Arguments Examine and Ambitions Exposed

1

‘God can look after Himself’

When we use that expression about a mortal man, we mean he has the ability to knock us down.  So by saying ‘God can look after Himself’ one can only mean He can bring judgment against individuals and nations, knowing that ‘As a man (or a nation) sows, so shall he reap’.  That should fill us with holy fear, not the desire to humiliate His name.

The Offence is Discriminatory

Of course it is.  It protects Almighty God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bible and the formularies of the Church of England from contemptuous, scurrilous, reviling and ludicrous attacks.  That is because Britain is a Christian nation with a Christian heritage, culture and constitution, an established church and a 72% Christian population.  Christianity is the faith of the United Kingdom and it is right for it to be given special recognition in our laws.

It only applies to the Church of England

No, it doesn’t.  Although ‘the formularies of the Church of England’ are point four in the usual definition of the blasphemy law, the Church of England does not have a monopoly on God, Jesus Christ or the Bible.  Other denominations share the historic doctrines of the Church embodied in the doctrines of the Church of England.  But in any case the law, as has been shown elsewhere, is primarily there to prevent attacks on the person of Jesus Christ.

The law engenders an expectation that other religions will be protected.

Not true.  The Salman Rushdie case established that our blasphemy laws do not protect Islam.

The blasphemy laws are against Human Rights Article 10

Not true.  In every case (Lemon, Wingrove and Preminger) brought before the European Court of Human Rights, state blasphemy laws including our own have been upheld.

The offence is divisive and against social cohesion

It is not the law against blasphemy which divides and damages social cohesion, it is the lack of any civilised standards of decency, restraint, respect and consideration in the world of the arts.  What the arts call ‘freedom of expression’ the rest of us too often have to describe as obscene, blasphemous, offensive, inhuman, pornographic, degrading or just plain crass.

The offence limits our ability to criticise Muslim countries

This argument says that as we have a blasphemy law, we cannot criticise Sudan ‘s blasphemy law under which a teacher was sentenced to fourteen days for allowing a teddy bear to be called Muhammed.  Sudan also has a law against theft, under which a thief may have his hand cut off.  We also have a law against theft.  The fact that we have a law by the same name as theirs does not mean we cannot criticise their threshold of tolerance or penalties.

A Christian’s faith should not need the protection of the secular courts

Our courts are not secular, because Her Majesty the Queen is a Christian monarch and they sit in her name.  The blasphemy law is not ‘about faith’ it is about respect for the sacred, in particular, for the person of Jesus Christ, who is always the blasphemers’ target.

This is not the beginning of a ‘slippery slope’

Oh, yes it is!  While most MPs were busy debating blasphemy last Thursday night, three of them slipped away to put down an Early Day Motion for disestablishment of the Church of England.  The motion came out with the number 666.  Is God trying to tell us something?

AFTER THE ABOLITION OF THE BLASPHEMY LAWS – WHAT NEXT?

Despite Dr Evan Harris’s specific denial in the House of Commons of a ‘slippery slope’, the abolition of the laws against blasphemy and blasphemous libel is not a stand-alone campaign by the extremist anti‑God National Secular Society.  It is merely today’s first item on the secularist agenda for the de‑Christianisation of Britain .

Once the blasphemy law is abolished, secularists will justifiably say: ‘There, the criminal law doesn’t protect the name of Jesus Christ or privilege the Christian faith any more.’

From that bridgehead, they will move on to their next target, which is the disestablishment of the Church of England.  Such is their confidence that Bob Russell MP and two others put down exactly that as an Early Day Motion while Dr Harris’ amendment was actually being debated in the House of Commons on Thursday 10th January 2008 .

In a curious spiritual twist, the next number which fell to the clerks to allocate to that motion was 666, the Biblical Mark of the Beast.  “It looks as though God or the Devil have been moving in mysterious ways,” said Bob Russell.  “What is even stranger is that this motion was tabled last night when MPs were debating blasphemy.”

After disestablishment, or even as part of it, the Bishops will lose their seats in the House of Lords and with that, much of their influence in the land.

Church schools will go, as it will be argued that Christianity has voluntarily given up its privileged position as the faith of the United Kingdom .

Prayers in Parliament will be sidelined, made multifaith or abolished altogether.

Christians will find themselves increasingly under attack for their beliefs in public service jobs.  They will be told to keep their views to themselves.

The Church will completely lose its charitable status (the assumption that a religious purpose is charitable has already gone).   Faith‑based initiatives in the social sphere will have to give up their Christian ethos to gain Government approval.

The default position that witnesses swear on the Holy Bible in court will be replaced by an assumption that an affirmation is all that is necessary.  The Bible will be available for a little while for those who insist upon swearing upon it, then it will go, or become just one of a number of available sacred texts.

Public manifestations of the Christian Faith will be attacked one by one.  Hospitals and the armed forces will no longer have paid chaplains.  Mayors’ chaplains will abolished.  Faith will be relegated to a private matter with no relevance to the public sphere, leaving the arena of public policy clear for atheist agenda‑setters alone.

Laws based on Christian principles will be systematically changed to be in line with atheist beliefs.  This is happening right now, of course, but the process will accelerate.

Finally, there will be a radical de‑Christianising of the Coronation Service.  With no Christianity to speak of in public life, the idea of God anointing the monarch through the Archbishop of Canterbury to reign as a Christian prince will be unsustainable.

The divorce of the Christian Faith from the United Kingdom will have been accomplished.

And it all started with abolition of the blasphemy laws.

Blasphemy: Bishop Says All Churches Must Get Involved

1

A leading Bishop has dismissed the myth that the blasphemy law ‘only applies to the Church of England’.  He called for all churches to have a say.

Speaking in the House of Lords Second Reading Debate (22nd January) of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, the Bishop of Manchester said all Christian churches should take part in the current discussions.

The Bishop, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said:

‘I would like to correct a common misapprehension about the law of blasphemy. It is often said that it protects only the tenets of the Church of England, but that statement is based on a faulty reading of case law. The judgment of the Administrative Court in the Jerry Springer case on 5 December 2007 usefully confirmed that the factual basis of the offence includes, contemptuous, reviling, scurrilous and/or ludicrous material relating to God, Christ [or] the Bible’.

‘The law therefore protects the basic tenets and scripture of the Christian religion. I mention that because it means that a response to the proposal for abolition is not a matter for the Church of England alone but for Christian denominations and groups more generally.’

The Government have announced their intention to consult the Church of England about abolition of the blasphemy laws after Dr Evan Harris MP (Liberal Democrat, Honorary  Associate of the National Secular Society, militant atheist) put down an amendment to abolish the offences of blasphemy and blasphemous libel in a debate in the House of Commons on Thursday 10th January.

Fearful of losing in a vote, Maria Eagle MP, the Minister, promised the Government would bring in their own amendment after ‘consulting’ the Church of England.  Most observers agreed the Church of England would thereby be ‘bounced’ into supporting such a move.  However, Dr McCulloch’s intervention shows the Church of England realises that the blasphemy laws are there to protect the holiness of the Lord Jesus Christ and might not be ‘bounced’ so easily.

PRAY: That God will even now be working to frustrate the blasphemers’ plans.  Pray that He will have mercy on our land and safeguard our national respect for His great name.

PRAY: That wherever groups of ministers and laity meet whether in local synods, PCC’s or fraternals, that a motion will be passed supporting the laws against blasphemy and that such a vote will be communicated to local bishops, MP’s, peers and the local press.  If you take part in one of those meetings, please seize the moment.

ITS ALL ABOUT INSULTING JESUS

It is being commonly said that abolition of the blasphemy laws will merely allow ‘debate, criticism or even ridicule’ of the Christian Faith which is currently prevented.

That is not the case.  ‘The God Delusion‘, with its debate, criticism and even ridicule of the Christian Faith, has been published with impunity.   Atheist magazines circulate freely, complete with debate, criticism and even ridicule of the Christian Faith.

Others argue that the blasphemy laws can go because there is protection for ‘the established church’ under the religious hatred law.

But the prime purpose of the laws against blasphemy and blasphemous libel is not to protect the sacrament of baptism or the evensong service, despite the reference in the definition of blasphemy to ‘the formularies of the Church of England’.

The truth, the elephant in the room, so to speak, is that the target of blasphemers is nearly always the Lord Jesus Christ, and the blasphemy laws have only been invoked recently in prosecutions for the most extreme and gratuitous insults against His person.

JESUS IS THE BLASPHEMER’S TARGET

This was true in the case of the ‘Gay News’ poem, a homosexual fantasy of what a Roman soldier wanted to do with the crucified body of Christ.  The prosecution brought by Mary Whitehouse in 1977 was successful and was upheld in the European Court of Human Rights.

Wingrove’s ‘Visions of Ecstasy’ contained a sequence of a nun having sexual relations with the body of Jesus Christ.  The banning of the film by the BBFC in 1989 for its blasphemous content was likewise upheld in the European Court of Human Rights as recently as 1996.

‘Jerry Springer the Opera’ centred on humiliating Jesus Christ by casting His character as a sexual deviant, an infantile coprophiliac, to be precise.  There was much more that was blasphemous in it, but that was the centre-piece.

SPRINGER CASE NOW IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, petitioned the House of Lords on 3rd January to appeal against the decision of the High Court last month not to allow a prosecution to proceed in respect of Jerry Springer the Opera.  Serious matters of public importance need to be decided.  So it is untrue, as has been said, that this case has been lost.  It is not over yet and it would be premature for Parliament to pull the rug from under the case while it is still going on.

Indeed, this case might provide a reason for the current rush to abolish the blasphemy laws.  It occurs to me that Evan Harris MP (an Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society) and his friends are concerned we are going to win in the House of Lords and bring a successful prosecution for blasphemy in respect of Jerry Springer the Opera.  They argue that a prosecution hasn’t been brought for thirty years, but now that a case is about to be decided upon in the courts, they are afraid they might lose.

BALTIC CENTRE STATUE IS LATEST EXAMPLE

In Gateshead on Saturday there was a well-attended protest against the latest example of blasphemy, a disgraceful statue of Jesus Christ with a phallus attached being exhibited in the Baltic Centre.  During the protest, Christians went in to the centre to gather evidence to prosecute those involved.  Police attended, but all went off peacefully.  An evangelistic leaflet was given out.

However, there was much anger amongst those present outside the centre, and it could fairly be said that it is only the laws against blasphemy, and the knowledge that someone can be brought to book under them, which prevented a serious breach of the peace inside the Baltic Centre.

But once again, the Baltic Centre statue is not about ‘debate, criticism or even ridicule’ of the Christian Faith.  It is about disrespecting and insulting the Lord Jesus Christ.

So anyone in favour of abolishing the laws against blasphemy must explain why he wishes to see the person of Jesus Christ vilified and humiliated, and just how that helps build the ‘culture of respect’ in our society which the Chief Rabbi called for in a recent lecture.

RESPECT FOR OTHERS BEGINS WITH RESPECT FOR GOD

As the Lord Jesus Christ said in His parable of the unjust judge, respect for others begins with respect for God.  It would be reasonable to take the view that to stem a growing culture of disrespect, the blasphemy laws are more important in 2008 than at any previous time.

Lastly, some well-meaning people who are going along with abolition of the blasphemy laws, Christians among them, seem to be regarding this matter in isolation, or at best in conjunction with the religious hatred laws.

The hard-line secularists actually pressing the amendments, however, while denying there is an agenda, have shown that abolition of these laws is not an isolated issue. The ‘666’ EDM to disestablish the Church of England and the website of the National Secular Society reveal that abolition of the offence of blasphemy is just one step towards an atheist Britain, in which Christianity, which they despise, is washed from the public square.

IT IS TIME FOR THEE, LORD, TO WORK

Again, the Lord Jesus said, ‘The children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.’  Good-hearted people of faith supporting the abolition of the blasphemy laws will in this view be like turkeys voting for Christmas.

The last time this matter was debated in the House of Lords, just over two years ago, there was a healthy majority for retaining the blasphemy laws.  But then the Government were in favour of keeping the law.  Now they are not.  So, right now, everything seems against us, but just at this very moment, the Lord is working, and apparent co-incidences are building up.  ‘It is time for thee, Lord, to work’ (Psalm 119:126).

‘Destroy Blasphemous Statue’ Jewish Art Collector Urged

0

A prominent Jewish art collector has been urged to withdraw and destroy a blasphemous statue of Jesus Christ currently on display in Gateshead.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, a Christian prayer and lobby group, wrote to Anita Zabludowicz, wife of Chaim (Poju) Zabludowicz, on Monday 7th January to make the suggestion. There has been no reply.

The foot-high statue, by Chinese artist Terence Koh, features Jesus Christ in a traditional pose but with an erection, and is a central part of the Zabludowicz Collection currently on show at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

The piece has become the focus of a storm of protest with outrage expressed by Christians on Tyneside and now across the UK. But the involvement of such a prominent member of the Jewish community has led Stephen Green also to write to the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, and to Mr Henry Grunwald, QC, the President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, asking them to condemn the Baltic Centre.

Businessman Poju Zabludowicz, who was born in Finland, is chairman of the British Israel Communications and Research Centre, a fellow director of the Jewish Activities Committee of the Jewish Leadership Council with Mr Grunwald and a fellow patron of the Alan Senitt Memorial Trust with the Chief Rabbi.

Terence Koh was born in Beijing, where the Chinese authorities are continuing their persecution of the Christian Church.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘It is particularly chilling that a Chinese artist should create such a sculpture, while the Chinese authorities are doing everything they can to oppress the Christian Church in China, imprisoning and torturing pastors for their faith in the very Jesus Christ Koh is humiliating. Koh is supporting the Chinese atheist regime and laughing at his countrymen persecuted for their faith from the comfort of his home in New York.

‘Koh has previously exhibited work with a pornographic theme, so there must be a lot going on his mind and his life which, ironically, badly needs the saving and healing grace of Jesus Christ.

‘However, I am hurt and disappointed that it is a Jewish art collector who has not only bought such an indecent, blasphemous and offensive statue of the Lord Jesus Christ from Koh, but has allowed it to go on show. Only last year I drove 250 miles to deliver clothing for Jewish relief charities. Christian Voice is a strong supporter of the state of Israel, imperfect as it is. Those of us Christians who honour the Jewish roots of our Christian faith and the place of Israel in God’s purpose will be dismayed to see such disrespect of our faith from such prominent members of the Jewish community.

‘In fact, I am astounded, and had to search carefully for the words with which to express my outrage on our website. As it is, I have already had an anti-Semitic email from someone whose support true Christians neither want nor need. Even discounting that, the actions of Anita Zabludowicz do nothing to help Jewish/Christian relations.

‘Back in 2005, the Chief Rabbi lectured on “How to build a culture of respect”. He spoke of the Christian and Jewish communities feeling “on the defensive” and “bruised”. In February 2006, he asked on the BBC: “Can we learn to respect what others hold holy?”

‘If these are to be more than just words, he and Henry Grunwald must speak out against this highly offensive and gratuitous insult to Jesus Christ and to the Christian community, and Anita Zabludowicz must withdraw this blasphemous piece before the exhibition of her collection ends on 20th January and apologise for the offence caused.

‘But I really feel she should go further than that. The thought that a prominent Jewish personality and wife of a Jewish billionaire personally takes pleasure in seeing the Lord Jesus Christ blasphemed, humiliated and vilified is not one Christians want to entertain. So I urge her to give an immediate undertaking to destroy the statue.’

Blasphemy Law ‘Maintains Respect For the Sacred’

0

The leader of a Christian prayer and lobby group has written to the Daily Telegraph in answer to a letter by more than a dozen campaigning secularists and two retired bishops, published today, calling for abolition of the blasphemy law.

TEXT OF PUBLISHED LETTER AND SIGNATORIES

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, is seeking to bring a private prosecution for blasphemy in the case of Jerry Springer the Opera against the Director General of the BBC and the show’s producer. Unsurprisingly, the author and director of Jerry Springer the Opera was among the signatories of the Telegraph letter as were Philip Pullman and Richard Dawkins.

The letter was published on the eve of a debate on an amendment to abolish the law against blasphemy to be moved tomorrow Wednesday 9th January in the House of Commons by Evan Harris MP, an Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society – as were no fewer than eight signatories of the Telegraph letter.

Stephen Green said today:

“The correspondents are wrong to say the blasphemy law ‘purports to protect beliefs’. ‘His Dark Materials’ and ‘The God Delusion’ have been published, both criticising Christian beliefs, without falling foul of it. No, the blasphemy law seeks primarily to maintain simple respect for Almighty God, Jesus Christ and the Bible.

“Curiously, it is always the person of the Lord Jesus Christ who is the target of blaspheming poets, playwrights and artists. This was true in the Gay News poem (the most recent successful prosecution for blasphemy) it was true in Jerry Springer the Opera, which is still in the courts, and it is true in the latest case, Terence Koh’s statue currently on display in Gateshead.

“It is not the law against blasphemy which damages social cohesion, it is the lack of any civilised standards of decency, restraint, respect and consideration in the world of the arts. What the Telegraph’s correspondents call ‘freedom of expression’ the rest of us too often have to describe as obscene, blasphemous, offensive, inhuman, pornographic, degrading or just plain crass.

“Of course the law against blasphemy discriminates in favour of Christianity. That is because historically, culturally and constitutionally, the United Kingdom is a Christian country, as Professor Dawkins himself conceded only last month.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7136682.stm  There can be no expectation from the followers of other faiths that their religions will be protected. The attempt to prosecute Salman Rushdie under the blasphemy laws failed, inevitably and rightly so.

“That being said, the existence of the blasphemy law should engender a proper respect for the sacred and so provide an umbrella of protection for the deeply-held religious beliefs of others. Respect for others comes, as Jesus Christ said in His parable of the unjust judge, from respect for God. God may not need the protection of such a law, but the social fabric of our society clearly does. And the recognition that God ‘can take care of Himself’ should fill us with holy fear, not the desire to humiliate His name.

“Dragging up the partisan Law Commission in support hardly helps the atheist case, nor does the illogicality of saying that no-one will be convicted under the blasphemy law, but that its existence is in breach of human rights law. On the latter point, that is the opposite of what the European Court of Human Rights has actually held (in Wingrove and Preminger), and as to whether anyone will be convicted, let’s wait and see, shall we?

“As the Bishop of Rochester said at the weekend, we need to affirm the Christian roots of British society. It is precisely the spiritual weakness of secularism with its multiculturalist (for which read anti-Christian) philosophy which has opened the door to Muslim ambition to turn this country, slowly but relentlessly, into an Islamic state. Only Christianity has the spiritual muscle to resist such a force, but we need to start standing up for Christianity, for God, Jesus Christ and the Bible, before it becomes illegal to do so.”

Blasphemous Statue on Show in Gateshead

1

As the Chinese authorities continue their persecution of the Christian Church, a statue by a Chinese artist attacking Jesus Christ is on show in the North-East of England.

The statue by Terence Koh, who was born in Beijing , but now lives in New York, is part of a collection owned by Newcastle-born Anita Zabludowicz which is being exhibited until 20th January at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

The 1ft-high depiction of Christ with an erection is the central figure in the exhibition.

Koh is supporting the Chinese atheist regime from the comfort of his home in New York and spitting in the face of his countrymen persecuted for their faith.

‘Koh has previously exhibited work with a pornographic theme, so there must be a lot going on his mind and his life which, ironically, badly needs the saving and healing grace of Jesus Christ.’

Anita Zabludowicz is a well-known collector in the arts world.  She is married to Chaim Zabludowicz, also known as ‘Poju’, the billionaire Finnish-born businessman and gaming magnate.

Stephen Green went on: ‘Chaim Zabludowicz is also chairman of the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre, a pro-Israel pressure group.  Both Chaim and Anita are well-known in Jewish circles.  Christians, many of whom support the state of Israel not least in prayer, would normally expect more respect for their faith from those of the cultivated olive tree (Rom 11:13-24).

‘The exhibition also reveals all that is wrong with the arts in the United Kingdom . Parliament is debating whether to allow the creation of human/animal embryos, we are killing our own children by abortion, what passes for our civilisation is becoming daily more crass, sexualised, selfish and disrespectful, schools and families are failing to teach children eternal standards of behaviour, family breakdown is causing misery and contributing, along with drunkenness and drug-taking, to crime.  The police detection rate in Gateshead is only 30%, while violent crime there is up 8.6%. A culture of lies and spin permeates and degrades politics and our troops are dying in illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

‘Yet with all these legitimate targets for the arts to expose, all the Director of the Baltic Centre, Peter Doroshenko, and Chairman Sir Ian Wrigglesworth seem able to do is put on an exhibition ridiculing the Son of God who alone can redeem sinners and transform our society from evil to righteousness.

‘The Baltic Centre project itself cost £46 million of taxpayers’ money. £34 million came from the National Lottery via the Arts Council and the rest was provided by various public bodies including Gateshead Council.

‘The Centre costs £3 million per year to run, of which half is being squandered by the Lottery.  From the Baltic Centre website, it seems a lot of that money goes on parties for arts insiders.

‘Evil displays like this only happen because the Church in our land allows them to.  I hope and pray there will be an outcry from the Church in Gateshead and across the UK which will cause all involved to examine their own lives and repent of their sins.’

Pipex Threatens Christian Voice Website

One of the UK ‘s leading domain name registrars has threatened to cut off traffic to a Christian website.

Pipex emailed threatening the action against www.christianvoice.org.uk with no warning and without a proper reason minutes before close of business today. They had already, unilaterally and without telling them, removed control of the domain name from Christian Voice earlier in the day, before they sent the email.

Our website, which is well-known for its opposition to gay rights, could disappear from screens before Saturday. Suspicion over behind the scenes activity has fallen on the Gay Police Association, described as ‘the sworn enemies’ of Christian Voice.

In a strange twist, the contact email address for a ‘Sarah Cooper’, described as ‘Customer Solutions Team’ for Pipex, came back ‘user unknown’ when emailed.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said tonight:

‘This Sarah Cooper says Pipex has received a complaint ‘of an official nature’ requesting removal of the website, which suggests some Government involvement. It also speaks of ‘the defamatory material’ on the site without specifying it, so we do not have a clue what their problem is.

‘They claim our website uses their servers, which it doesn’t, and then they offer to discuss the matter while giving no time to do so and providing a non-contactable email address.

‘I sense the dark hand of our sworn enemies the Gay Police Association behind all this. It could be that they have taken exception to us calling them liars over their ‘Bloody Bible’ advertisement, but it was the Advertising Standards Authority which ruled that they had failed on the tests of decency, and crucially, on truthfulness and substantiation.

‘We shall see what transpires over the next day or so, but if the Christian Voice website does come down, Pipex can expect legal action. A commercial company cannot act as judge and jury unilaterally cutting off valuable web traffic on a whim or because of behind-the-scenes politicking. If they get away with it, every politically incorrect website is at risk.’

TES Reveals Shocking Intolerance

0

An education web forum (link below) has revealed shocking anti-Christian intolerance among teachers.

In the forum, published on the Times Educational Supplement website, teachers belittle Christian parents, ridicule their beliefs, describe Sunday School teaching as child abuse and threaten Child Protection procedures for trivial reasons.

The forum, started last Thursday under the disparaging title ‘Some Parents’, begins with a teacher bemoaning the fact that a child refused her advice about hay fever with the words, ‘Jesus will heal it.’

The teacher concerned refuses to discuss the matter with the parents, and even in the absence of their side of the story, says she already knows what they will say and is ‘Tempted to report CP for neglect’.

From there, the thread descends into an anti-Christian rant, with Christianity described by one contributor as ‘a certain set of stories’, ‘crazy,’ ‘unfathomable and idiotic’, ‘an insane made-up myth’ and ‘wanton mental abuse’. Others, who have never met any of the parties, chime in describing the parents as ‘Middle class religious freaks’, sneer that Jesus won’t provide a tissue, suggest telling the child that ‘the school nurse is Jesus or Superman or Wonder women (sic)’ and wondering ‘can antihistamines be seen in a vision?’.

A few contributors try to urge some respect and tolerance for religious belief, but their points are ignored by the fundamentalist atheists and they are simply shouted down. Among them is a hay fever sufferer who observes that anti-histamines often don’t work. What will shock many people, even non-Christians, is how shallow the level of debate is between those who teach our children. One teacher, who says she is shortly going to be ordained, describes the parents as ‘Christian idiots’ and says she would deny communion to parents who smack their children. Another, who claims to read the Bible every day, urges that the parents be reported under Child Protection procedures. Knowing that this could easily disrupt their family, have their children taken into care and probably adopted against their will and even any form of justice, yells: ‘SEE HOW THEY HANDLE IT. It may wake them up.’

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘The intensity of anti-Christian belief among these teachers is almost unbelievable. It is frankly appalling that such people are in charge of children during a large part of the day. Their views go beyond mere concern that a child is not getting a medicine that some teacher thinks he should get. They use the issue to denigrate Christian belief, they shut their eyes to the evidence from the Bible and other historical sources for the reality of the life of Jesus, they tolerate no view other than their own, and one or two display a degree of atheistic evangelicalism which would put Richard Dawkins in the shade.

‘A couple of contributors to the forum make the point that none of the others would dare publicly to rant against Islam or Mohammed like they do about Christianity and Jesus Christ. That highlights the politically correct nature of their attacks on Christianity. Still, there are good signs in the reaction to the Sexual Orientation Regulations that Christians are starting to rediscover the confidence and courage to fight back and stand up for their faith. It can’t come too soon.’

Damien Hirst ‘Ignorant of Christianity’

0

Artist Damien Hirst has been accused of ignorance of Christianity, the subject of his latest exhibition, ‘New Religion.’

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said tonight:

‘Damien Hirst thinks he is being daring with his latest exhibition, being held in All Hallows on the Wall in London, which he quaintly describes as ‘a working church’. The trouble is, all he has done is expose his own ignorance and a peculiar obsession with medicines.

‘For a start, in calling his rather elegant cross studded with pewter pills a ‘crucifix’, Hirst is saying he doesn’t know that for a cross to be a crucifix, it needs a representation of Jesus Christ on it. As the shop girl famously said, it needs ‘a little man on it.’  The pills cannot represent Christ, for they are inlaid into the cross rather than on it, so it is a cross, not a ‘crucifix’ and Hirst has paraded his ignorance.

‘He also seems not to know that Moses’ staff becoming a snake is not part of the ten plagues on Egypt, nor that ‘Lord show us the Father’ was the prayer of Jesus’ followers not for them. He is confused about the Last Supper and whether the Garden of Gethsemane is to do with Christ’s Passion or His Resurrection.

‘But the use of so many medicines and tablets is the most confused and confusing part. How long did it take him to assemble them all? Has he taken them all at some stage? Why in his series on the Apostles is Bartholomew associated with ‘Tylenol Codeine’ and Peter with some capsule or other? Where is the ‘religious connotation’ Damien Hirst is claiming to give us?

‘It is also peculiar that Hirst has premised his work on some supposed ‘conflict’ between science and religion. A bit more serious thought would show that religion and science do different jobs and are not in conflict at all. In fact, the exhibits seem to shout ‘medicine’ rather than ‘science’, so I cannot see that he has hit the target, or even qualified for the play-offs.

‘In Hans Christian Anderson’s story, all the clever people kept pretending that the Emperor had a lovely new suit of clothes. It took a small boy to point out that he had nothing on at all. In this exhibition, Damien Hirst has put nothing on at all. Maybe it’s a case of trying too hard, or maybe Hirst has forgotten to take some tablets of his own. Either way, I shan’t be going to see it.’

Police Bow to Chinese Embassy Pressure

The Metropolitan Police allowed themselves to be used as a private security force of the Chinese Government this afternoon, when they served a Section 14 notice under the Public Order Act 1986 preventing a peaceful vigil right outside the Chinese Embassy by prolifers and human rights activists from UK Life League and Christian Voice.   Inspector Robert Hedderman told the dozen or so Christians that he believed “that the assembly may result in serious disruption to the life of the community” and that “the purpose of the persons taking part in the assembly is the intimidation of others with a view to compelling them not to do an act that they a right to do or to do an act they have a right not to do.”

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said afterwards:

“The legislation used against us to prevent our holding a peaceful act of witness on the pavement outside the Chinese Embassy was brought in to stop violent animal rights activists intimidating researchers.  To see it used to save the blushes of one of the most despotic regimes on God’s earth on the eve of the G8 summit is nothing short of scandalous and an abuse of civil rights here in the UK.

“Moving us to the opposite side of the road hardly lessened the supposed ‘disruption to the life of the community’ which Inspector Hedderman pretended to be so worried about.  The truth is, the British police are simply on the side of those who want to make money trading in the Chinese market.  They should be on the side of peace and justice.”

Rev Jim Dowson, leader of UK Life League added, “This is the regime which sent tanks into Tiannamen Square and routinely tortures dissidents who are simply detained without trial.  If they feel intimidated by the prayers of a few protestors, then they must know we serve a mighty God indeed.”

Stephen Green continued: “We set up the vigil in the first place because of issues raised in the 2005 report from Amnesty International.  The use of arbitrary detention and systematic torture as a means of repression is well documented, and that against unregistered Christians and the Falun Gong has reached sickening levels.  Ms Gao Rongrong, a Falun Gong follower, died just last week from appalling injuries sustained during prolonged torture, in particular, the use of electric batons to her face, head and neck.  On top of that, we are horrified by:

“(a) The practice of forced abortions in China as part of that country’s notorious ‘one-child’ policy, financed in part through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which Britain supports,

“(b) The persecution of Christians in China.  In particular, Amnesty have specifically recorded the widespread torture and detention of Chinese Protestant pastors which has been going on for years.

http://web.amnesty.org/report2005/chn-summary-eng

“We do not agree with Amnesty International on absolutely everything they do and all their policy positions, but the human rights abuses they catalogue in China are shaming to the UK, which is happy to trade with these torturers.  Amnesty even cite the case of a woman who was forcibly aborted so she could be put to death on drugs charges – Chinese law does not allow the death penalty for pregant women.  She was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment.  That case is evil and barbaric, as is much else in China.  So we have no hesitation in condemning China on the basis of the Amnesty Report and calling for our Government to stop financing China’s human rights abuses through contributions to UN bodies and foreign aid, and to ostracise China as a trading nation.  I call on Tony Blair to seek agreement on a united trade embargo against China at the G8 summit.  As for our police, it is about time they stopped allowing themselves to be used as political pawns and went back to good, honest coppering.”

China Human Rights Record Slammed

China’s record on human rights comes under scrutiny today as a Christian group joins pro-lifers outside the Chinese Embassy in Great Portland Street.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

“We are joining protestors from UK Life League outside the Chinese Embassy because of issues raised in the 2005 report from Amnesty International:

“(a) The practice of forced abortions in China as part of that country’s notorious ‘one-child’ policy, financed in part through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which Britain supports,

“(b) The persecution of Christians in China – in particular, Amnesty have specifically recorded the widespread torture and detention of Chinese Protestant Pastors which has been going on for years.

Bedside Bible Ban Still Being Considered

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is still considering banning bibles from the bedside, despite sending out emails claiming that “Leicester hospitals are not banning bibles” Christian Voice has learned.

The e-statement from Laura Skaife of the Leicester NHS Trust, sent as a stock response to people complaining, said the Trust was “appalled at the reports in the national newspapers stating that it is considering banning Bibles from its wards.”  Miss Skaife is being duplicitous: the press never said ‘wards’, they said ‘bedsides’.  The Daily Telegraph wrote: “The century-old tradition of bibles in hospital bedside lockers could be ended,” while the Daily Mail front-page headline was “Hospitals may ban bedside Bibles.”  Not one paper said they would be “banned from the wards”.  The Sun, The Guardian, The Daily Express, the BBC and Sky News all accurately relayed the Press Association’s original story about “banning bedside Bibles.”

The papers were completely true and accurate.  Taking the bibles out of bedside lockers and sticking them away in a cupboard somewhere else on the ward is precisely what the Leicester NHS Trust is considering.  The Trust should have admitted that and tried to defend it, or backed down and withdrawn the proposal completely.

Indeed, earlier on, the NHS Trust spokesperson, Anne McGregor, told the BBC they were “considering where to store the books.”  Bibles “might be removed from lockers but they would be available elsewhere”, she said.  That confirms the newspaper stories 100% .

Ms McGregor denied reports that the move was prompted by concerns the Bible might offend non-Christians.  It is all about MRSA, she says, despite there being not a shred of evidence that MRSA is lurking on bibles in bedside lockers.  If bibles are stored on the wards in a cupboard, so that patients have to ask a nurse to fetch one, the scope for transmission of infection is even greater.  In addition, one might think nurses had other, nursing, things to do.  As the Diocese of Leicester said, someone may need to reach for a Bible in the middle of the night.

The truth is that the secularists behind this vindictive move are not worried that people might catch MRSA from bibles.  They are worried they might catch Christianity, and with good reason.  The Gideons, who place the bibles, told us they have testimonies from people whose journey to faith started with a curious peek into that bedside Bible.

So with people of other faiths denying that any of them have asked for bibles to be removed, and Sikh and Muslim leaders actively supporting bedside Bibles, and with experts deriding the MRSA angle (even the most recent independent hygeine report on the Leicester NHS Trust website fails to mention Bibles as a source of possible infection), it is looking more and more as if someone in Chief Executive Dr Peter Reading’s management has a secret anti-Christian agenda.  Only a militant secularist could be so spiteful as to deny the sick and dying – and their relatives – the comfort of the wonderful word of God.

This is, like all the things God raises us up for, a spiritual battle, and we pray to see God’s victory.  Gideon director Iain Mair is meeting hospital managers on Wednesday afternoon (8th June) to discuss the bedside Bible ban.  Please pray for him and pray the meeting confirms that the Holy Bible may stay in the bedside lockers of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

You can email or phone the Trust, especially if you have already had one of their deceitful emails.  Please be polite, and stress the wisdom of keeping the Bible at hospital bedsides.
