The Co-op: Bad with money
The Co-op: Bad with money

The Co-op Bank that told Christian Voice at a moment’s notice to take its business elsewhere has losses of £1.3bn.

The Co-operative Bank confirmed the figure earlier today. The ‘ethical’ bank does not expect to make a profit for the next two years.

In April 2012, The Coop supermarket chain decided not to source Israeli goods from the so-called “occupied territories”.   It is committed however to buying from elsewhere in Israel.

But our main concern about the Co-op bank itself is the way it discriminates strongly against those Christians who take their faith seriously.  See: http://www.repentuk.com/coop.html

In 2005, the Co-operative Bank objected to Christian Voice banking with them.  The ‘ethical’ bank, who claim not to discriminate, told Christian Voice that we should take our banking elsewhere because our Christian beliefs lead us to oppose homosexual rights and homosexual practice.  The Co-op group is strongly pro-homosexual, sponsoring 15 gay pride events in 2012, more than any other company.

They continued to sponsor Manchester Pride in 2013 as the scale of the group’s financial disaster unfolded.

Although it will be their ineptitude as a financial institution which will make all the headlines, if the bank had followed Christian principles of diligence when it took over Brittania Building Society, if it had followed the Biblical advice to choose able men such as fear God to run it, rather than a homosexual drug-taker, if it had noticed that the Bible says ‘thou shalt not steal’ before overcharging mortgagees and those mis-sold payment protection insurance and interest rate hedging products, if its bosses had not succumbed to pride and greed when wanting to take over TSB branches from Lloyds, it would not be in the position it is now.

If the Co-op had concentrated more on balancing the books according to Christian principles and less on politically-correct posturing it would not be in the mess it is in today.

  1. yes, I am rather glad that the Co-op bank has suffered in the way that it has. Pity about its customers who may be blissfully unaware of the kind of amoral idiots that run their show! In relation to Israel the genesis passage of god speaking to Abraham; Those who bless you I will bless, and those who curse you I will curse. Amazing how these ‘co-incidences’ keep happening.
I hope the co-op get to read this!

  2. Surely the Co-op would be more politically correct if they sold products from the “occupied territories” and boycotted the rest of Israel. Also, they seem to have sought a man after God’s heart by appointing a church preacher. His homosexuality & drug-taking were revealed later; then the church sacked him. And they are trying to do the right thing by actively promoting fair-trade products & ethical farming practices.
But they have been deceived by the homosexual activists who have turned them against genuine Christians.

    • The Methodist Church have not sacked Paul Flowers, but merely suspended him indefinitely (latest update on Methodist Church in Britain website 20 November 2013) pending any criminal proceedings and will make a decision after any criminal proceedings are completed. Unfortunately for all concerned, he was previously convicted of gross indecency with another male and drink driving. He left a charity where he was a trustee when his expenses claims were challenged by the chief executive and the chief executive reported that he had made a report to the charity commission about his conduct. He stepped down as a councillor in Bradford when ‘inappropriate but not illegal’ content was found on the council’s computer but the resignation was spun as leaving because of the pressure of the Co-op Bank appointment. He was a councillor with a prominent role in social services in Rochdale when the ‘Satanic Abuse of children’ scandal was happening. As an ‘out gay man’, he was a trustee of the Terence Higgins Trust until the drugs and rent boys scandal broke. All in all, he seems to have supporters in the Methodist Church since he is still one of the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes.

  3. It is shocking the amount of support that private and government institutions are giving on gay life. This sickening impetus is worrying. Almost No moral values left in society. Our local council flew the gay flag for one month in February this year in Ipswich another sickening trend. Time will eventually change this disgusting immoral support of LGBT life style. God help us all

  4. In the weeks since the first ‘gay marriages’ took place note what has happened.
    1. London and much of the country blanketed by a thick smog of air pollution.
    2. Maria Miller, main government proponent of homosexual marriage, resigns after expenses scandal.
    3. Report in the papers about sex harassment in house of commons by MPs on young aides (mainly homosexual cases), after sordid Nigel Evans case.
    4. Co=op bank makes massive losses after promoting gay pride, dumping Christian Voice and Israel.

    God exposing the rot?

    • And don’t forget there had been all that flooding, which some thought was a warning. Global warming and the situation in Ukraine and the Central African Republic are not looking good, either.

  5. Thank you for this information about the Coop bank. I was not aware of a number of the issues raised and am concerned as it is my bank currently. I would be grateful if you would email me your thoughts re good alternative banks. Thank you

  6. It would be interesting to find out the senior personalities involved when it went wrong morally and financially.
The role of the Labour government in encouraging over-ambitious expansion should not be overlooked. I suspect that the insistence on the promotion of perversion came largely from the same source. It should not be forgotten that the extreme “equalities” campaigner, Harriet Harman, when in the National Council of Civil Liberties was active on behalf of PIE, the Paedophile Information Exchange which advocated the right to have sex with children as a civil liberties issue. The aggressive homosexual organisations are already campaigning for a reduction in the age of consent as their next objective. They have ready access to No 10 Downing Street which organises “gay” social events. “Gay” marriage is only a step on the road to further abominations for them.

Incidentally, it might be worth consulting one of the Christian legal support groups. You may very well have a case fir unlawful religious discrimination. It depends, of course, on the time, energy and resource you have available but sauce for goose is sauce for the gander and equality means equality!

  7. Hold it Hold it…..We’re all missing something here…If I was GAY and the coop closed my account because I was GAY I I could claim discrimination and take them to court as we have seen many times these cases in recent news. Yet, the COOP has closed Christian Voice account because they are voicing religious expression against sin. Surely this is Discrimination by the COOP.against Christian Voice. Discrimination of any sort is not allowed. I’m sure if Christian Voice press charges against the COOP they would be in breech of current equal right laws. I am with the coop and I’m going to advise them I am connected with Christian voice and see what the reaction is. I’m shocked and disappointed with the COOP. it is a shameful worrying trend of corporations now swinging the entire pendulum the other way against those who are worried by this new gay tyrannous new morality that Gay is Good. 8. Those that charge interest go against God’s ethics on money. There is just as much in the Bible about charging interest (“thou shall not steal”) as there is about immorality. Financial sin & sexual sin are no different at all, for:-

    • ” Those that charge interest go against God’s ethics on money. ” If you think that, you will have to us a Muslim bank. Another case of Christian Voice enthusiasts tending to agree with Muslims !
Of course, in the Middle Ages Christians did actually go along with this ethic, and Jews had to do the dirty work of usury, which they got all the blame for.

  9. FOR THE GOVERNMENTS OF BRITIAN LIB LAB CON – It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice; ye are a factious crew, and enemies to all good government; ye are a pack of mercenary wretches, and would like Esau sell your country for a mess of pottage, and like Judas betray your God for a few pieces of money.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter’d your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?

Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors.

In the name of God, go!

  10. Just a little aside to this story. I was aware of most of the inadequacies of the Coop Bank, but was attracted to their very competitive 1.5% easy access savings account and so because I had some spare funds I entered our local Coop bank this week to open this account.
The staff member was great and promptly took me into a side office and said that normally an appointment was required, however, when she began to process my application, her face began to scowl and she muttered that there was something strangely unresponsive with their computer systems. I jokingly replied that I had already moved down to option C by choosing their Bank, but she was not amused, especially after 10 more minutes when she was still unable to access their systems. She then suggested that she take my id. documents and scan them in to save me bringing them in to the next necessary visit and I agreed to this, but felt increasingly uncomfortable. She took my documents behind the counter to the photocopier in the corner while I waited in the main foyer, but after what seemed like an age, she came forward to apologise for the delay and explained that the photocopier was malfunctioning and that she was currently re-booting it and would I mind waiting another 5 minutes for the reboot to be completed. I reluctantly agreed to this but at the same time realised that this was indeed a bad mistake on my part.
Yes. you’ve guessed it – the photocopier as well as their computer systems both failed to work and contrived to prevent me from opening that attractive account. To me , it was clear that God had intervened to prevent my opening of this account in what I knew to be an anti-Semitic and politically correct anti-Christian bank. The Lord does move in mysterious ways even to protect us from ourselves.
I left that Coop Bank and I retorted that “Him up there” clearly did not want me to invest with them. The banking staff looked at me in total bewilderment! I love it when God intervenes in mans affairs to show him a better path.

  11. It is clearly taught in God’s word that people who come against Christians are coming against God, and He will judge them for it.

In Acts 9 when Jesus told Saul he was persecuting Him it was clear that He was identifying Himself with His people.

    • While I agree with you, Bob, I think that we need to remember that we ought to conduct ourselves such that people see God in us and are attracted to Him, not repelled by our behaviour. Those who wish to do evil will hate the contrast that Godly Light brings to a situation, but we must be careful that we do not turn into caricatures of Christians condemning everything but reading Scripture or singing hymns.

      • The Christian Gospel is a positive Gospel; which is why, whenever I meet gays, I tell them that Jesus can change them. However, there is much to be concerned about in today’s atmosphere of declension and apostasy.

The truth of God’s infallible word must be taught without fear ot favour, and without watering it down.

  12. The God of all Glory created, universally, all creatures to set forth
His praise; both those which we esteem profitable in use and
pleasure, and also those which we accompt noisome and loathsome.
But principally He hath appointed man the chiefest instrument of His
honour, not only for ministering matter thereof in man himself, but as
well in gathering out of other the occasions of publishing God’s
goodness, wisdom, and power. And in like sort, every doing of man
hath, by God’s dispensation, something whereby God may and ought
to be honoured. So the good doings of the good and the evil acts of
the wicked, the happy success of the blessed and the woeful
proceedings of the miserable, do in divers sort sound one praise of
God. And as each flower yieldeth honey to the bee, so every example
ministereth good lessons to the well-disposed mind. The glorious
triumph of the continent man upon the lusts of wanton flesh,
encourageth men to honest restraint of wild affections; the shameful
and wretched ends of such as have yielded their liberty thrall to foul
desires teach men to withhold themselves from the headlong fall of
loose dishonesty. So, to like effect, by sundry means the good man’s
example biddeth men to be good, and the evil man’s mischief warneth
men not to be evil. To this good end serve all ill ends of ill
    beginnings.

    • If this is a quotation, surely we ought to be told where it comes from ? That is normal in both religious and secular contexts. Or if Mr Davis wrote it himself, why has he phrased it in this obsolete way ? What does this mean :
” He hath appointed man the chiefest instrument of His honour, not only for ministering matter thereof in man himself” ? It doesn’t seem to mean “not only to praise him”, because that would come under the next bit::
“but as well in gathering out of other the occasions of publishing God’s goodness, wisdom, and power.” (or I think that’s what that bit means).

I’m sure I’m not alone in finding this language an obstacle to readily understand what Mr Davis is trying to say.
