The Government’s new ‘farming roadmap’ suggests farmers should switch from alleged ‘high-emission’ livestock, like sheep and cattle, into ‘growing oilseeds and pulses’. They say this will come ‘as demand for plant-based foods increases’.
That’s wishful thinking. Demand for plant-based foods is now static, while the UK is already importing fifteen percent of our beef.
Farmers pushed into delivering ‘transition’
The Government say (p58): ‘Farmers will play a critical role in delivering this transition by adopting practices that reduce emissions while sustaining productive, commercially viable businesses.’
And how will they force farmers to plant pulses, a key part of ‘this transition’? They will waste taxpayers’ money paying them. The Government bleat on about the money they claim they are ploughing into agriculture. But it’s both an attempt to win back support after the wickedness of the family farm inheritance tax caused rural fury, and a crude attempt to impose their net zero idiocy.
We have nothing against pulses, but anyone who wants serious protein and a balanced diet needs to eat meat, which is what scripture says in Deuteronomy chapter fourteen:
Deut 14:4 These are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat,
Verse five goes on to add various deer species, and wild goats and bovines. They are all ruminants, wonderfully designed by our gracious maker to eat what we can’t, that’s the twenty-six percent of the world’s surface covered by grass, and turn it into what we can, their highly-nutritious muscle meat.
‘sustainable’ and ‘resilient’
The words ‘sustainable’ and ‘resilient’ appear twenty-eight times in Keir Starmer’s 2025 Food Strategy Policy Paper. Their Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme drives farmers into sowing bird food and pulling their livestock off moorland. The latter reduces production, so Defra pays farmers a harvest of up to £44 per acre, from the taxpayer instead.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food became the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs in 2001. Environment now comes before Food, and Farming Communities tag along behind. DEFRA’s Farming Roadmap says they like ‘land to deliver nature and climate outcomes’ rather than food. Under ‘Climate change mitigation and adaptation’ they say the farming sector ‘will need to reduce emissions to support broader national efforts to mitigate climate change’. Why? Ed Miliband’s Net Zero fanaticism lies behind all this.
When you dig down, you find they are betting the farm on planting trees on prime agricultural land, on Methane Suppressing Feed Products, which mess around with bovine digestion, and indeed, ‘growing oilseeds and pulses’ billed as ‘lower emission farming’.
Uplands are for raising livestock
Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today: ‘We raise sheep here in Wales and our neighbours raise cattle both for milk and for beef. You have different breeds for each.
‘Why is there so much livestock here in Wales rather than vegetables? Just look at the terrain. It’s rolling hills and heavy soil, like much of the West and the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It’s perfect for livestock, but you can’t grow vegetables here.
‘You need the flat fields and silty soils of places like Lincolnshire, East Anglia, Kent and the Vale of Evesham. Lentils in particular love the cool, semi-arid plains of the North-West of the United States and Canada and parts of India.
‘Why do our Government allow people with such little knowledge of farming prepare a ‘Farming Roadmap’? Because they are stupid, relying on their own opinions rather than seeking the Lord for his wisdom.’
Prayer and action
Please pray the Lord to replace them with competent, truthful, honest, God-fearing men with the sense to get rid of unjust taxation like inheritance tax, and prioritise food and energy security over net zero.
