Sorting out ‘Abominations’!

Abomination / Abominations / Abominable

Key questions answered:

  1. What Hebrew and Greek words are translated as abomination / abominations / abominable in the King James Version and what do these words actually mean?
  2. Is the same Hebrew word used for sodomy and for prohibited foods?
  3. Does the word ‘to-evah’ translated ‘abomination’ only ever refer to idolatry?
  4. Is there another Hebrew word for idolatry apart from ‘to-evah’?
(The answers to 2 and 3 are “No”, and to 4 is “Yes”, but see for yourself…)

The Hebrew words, according to Strong’s numbers:

  • H887  basah – smelling, bad (only occurs in 1Sam 13:4)
  • H2194 za’am – enraging (only occurs in Mic 6:10)
  • H6292 piggul – stinking, fetid
  • H8251 shiqquts – disgusting, idolatrous
  • H8262 shaqats – filthy, unclean
  • H8263 sheqets – filthy, unclean
  • H8441 to’evah – morally disgusting
  • H8581 tawab – loathsome

Please note the Hebrew sometimes takes liberties with the grammar; a noun appears as an adjective and vice versa.

The Greek words, according to Strong’s numbers:

  • G111 athemitos – unlawful (only occurs in 1Pet 4:3)
  • G946 bdelugma – detestation
  • G947 bdeluktos – detestable
  • G948 bdelusso – to stink, be detestable

The resources used were the application E-Sword with strong’s numbers and dictionary in KJV+ and the KJVof the Bible edited by Spiros Zodhiates.  I take full responsiblity for any errors, which please point out to me.  This page is intended to be a resource for the church.

It was developed in the first place to counter the argunment that the word for abomination (to-evah) used to describe sodomy in Lev 18:22 is always associated with idolatry and that therefore Lev 18:22 can be ignored today.  Yes, ‘to-evah’ is used in connection with idolatry, but the widespread use of the same word in Proverbs in particular shows its meaning is much wider than that, conveying moral outrage, not necessarily in connection with idolatry, but always in connection with rebellion from God, in every case.

There is even another word (shiqquts) which is specifically to do with idolatry, used widely in Jeremiah, Daniel, Hosea and Zechariah.  Ezekiel uses to-evah everywhere except in chapter 20, where he switches to ‘shiqquts’ and specifically upbraids Israel for departing from the Lord.

And of course the word (I humbly suggest) which has been mistranslated as ‘abomination’ in the KJV for the food laws in Lev 11 is sheqets, which means unclean, not morally reprehensible.

In all, translated as ‘abomination’ in the KJV, basah and za’am each occur once, and pigul and tawab four times each.  Shaqats is used twice, and sheqets 11 times (8 of those in Lev 11) and shiqquts occurs 20 times.  The remaining 132 out of the total 175 occurences of the words abomination / abominations / abominable have been translated from the Hebrew to’evah.

Finally, boringly, in Lev 19:19and Deut 22:11, wearing a garment of mixed wool and linen is not described as an abomination, but just as a ‘thou shalt not’, and it rules out only the mixture of wool and linen, and not cotton and polyester.

I shall not trouble to commentate on the Greek translations in the New Testament; they are self-explanatory, and cause nothing like the confusion that the Old Testament Hebrew has caused.  The verses follow:
Old Testament (KJV)
