How a DDOS attack works – The attacker recruits thousands of slave computers to send simultaneous requests to the target website.

Yesterday, the Christian Voice website was off-line most of the day after coming under a massive cyber-attack.  We apologise to our members and readers but there was nothing we could do.

Our web host reported at 8:22 am: ‘A few moments ago the Christian Voice website began to come under a massive DDOS attack which quickly crippled the server.

‘You’ve probably upset some people!  We see these from time to time – it’s usually outspoken Christians who get targetted.

‘I’ve had to temporarily suspend it, as the attackers had sufficient resources to bring down the whole shared-hosting machine – if you were paying for dedicated hosting, i.e. only your website on a single machine belonging to you, you’d still be brought down.

‘The scale of the attack was the largest we’ve ever seen. When people have enough resources, they can bring Amazon down.

‘Sadly, launching powerful attacks is very cheap these days. You can go onto the Internet’s “underground” and hire the computing capacity of thousands of virus infected computers for a few minutes for a few dollars, and that’s enough to bring down a few servers.’

In the Police and Justice Act 2006, the United Kingdom specifically outlawed denial-of-service attacks and set a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.  But the attack was from faked IP addresses which cannot be traced.

Stephen Green, National Director of Christian Voice, said today:

‘This attack on our website is encouraging.  I don’t know whether it was Secularirists or Islamists we have upset beyond measure, but clearly someone out there thinks Christian Voice is doing such a great job we have to be disrupted.  So by the grace of God we’ll stand up for Jesus Christ and for righteousness all the more.’

  1. Whoever was responsible, it certainly had all the hallmarks of a satanic attack – unheralded, massive, seemingly overwhelming. But Satan always tempts people to overreach themselves and somehow they end up inadvertently proving their own guilt and the innocence of their victims. They believe the key to power is power and cannot understand how an apparently broken down, dying, man-made institution (so they think) Church can withstand their attacks. They continue to believe that the gates of Hell will prevail. We should pray for them.

    • Hasn’t Satan got better things to do than trying to crash internet sites? Taking out the Christian Voice website for a few hours is hardly the same as taking out, for example, the CIA and Homeland Security systems. Surely Satan has bigger fish to fry.

          • It has been pointed it that it is a quote out of context. This helps:
            John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
            So the context is not political freedom but freedom from sin.
            You could know that freedom, Davey. Jesus Christ can release you not just from the stain of sin, but from the power of sin. You just have to ask him.
            As everyone seems to be saying: Think about it.

  2. Our website operator who lived in Malta died suddenly a few weeks ago in his 50’s. We have had great difficulty obtaining the website domains from Malta. After much trouble our fervent prayers have been answered and we have managed it without cost but it is still a very difficult problem sorting it all out. We suspect spiritual forces have been at work! Our website http://www.freechristianteaching.org had been getting nearly 800,000 hits a month with China being top of the list, then USA, UK, Russia, Ukraine.

  3. Anyone prepared to stand up and be counted, in defending God’s word, will inevitably attract demonic onslaught. Be greatly encouraged by Matt 5:10-12 and let us pray for our enemies (verse 44) as well!
    Know that you are in good company among the prophets and apostles, who made themselves unpopular by speaking the word of God, against what the people wanted to hear.

  4. Jesus said, “…If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you…” John 15:20. Also Matthew 5:10-12 as mentioned above by Richard.
    Before we get too carried away that we are doing the right thing, please remember that we are to put on the whole armour of God before going into battle with the dark spiritual forces arrayed against us. Otherwise we will get hurt.
    Keep asking for intercessory prayer because that is where the real power lies.

  6. i don’t know whether this will set the proverbial cat among the pidgeons but may i say that the nature of satan is dangerously misunderstood
    many people seem to think that he performs evil or inconvenient acts against followers of our LORD JESUS
    JESUS told us that he is a seducer / liar and accuser and destroyer but we are also told that he is a deciever and can appear as an angel of light
    in order for him to win mankind’s allegiance he will perform lying signs and wonders and will appear to be mankind’s salvation and thus fooling people into thinking he is JESUS
    in occult circles they teach a reverse doctrine in which satan is the saviour so we must be on our guard against this
    actually ALL wickedness is performed by man including interfereing with systems [ remember ALL authority is set up or pulled down by GOD according to HIS will ]
    we can rest assured that GOD is in control [ even of satan ]
    we are to be tested and purified through the fire
    we need to look at the example set by shadrach /meshach and abednego [ sorry i seem to remember the babylonian names better than thier hebrew ones ]
    may we all pass the test and trust GOD to guide us through it [ not allowing fear or doubt to enter our minds ]
    consider our eritrayan brothers and sisters
    dark spiritual forces flee from the name of JESUS and HE assures us that if we are HIS NOTHING can snatch us away from HIM
    let us continue to ask HIM what HIS will is for us to do and consider HIS glory of more importance than our lives

  8. You’re doing such a good job that the site still can’t be accessed using its ‘Home’ address or by clicking ‘Home’ above. All this produces is a message saying you’ve not paid your bills and have been shut down. So Satan’s still winning it would seem. Or, more realistically, the nuisances are who enjoy depriving us of our daily amusement.

  10. I had several people try to hack into my conservative Christian site for almost 2 months. I received reports as to the ip addies and some were from Muslim countries but most were from Holland. Finally, the hackers were permanently banned by WordPress.
    They are out there working just as hard as they were for centuries when they were spreading their religion by the sword.
