A government-commissioned report has classified so-called “anti-transgender views” as a form of misinformation, urging ministers to deploy psychological techniques to stop the public adopting views deemed “misleading”. In other words, rather than engaging with arguments, the preferred solution appears to be ensuring people never entertain them in the first place.
If you needed proof that common sense is now being treated as a public-health threat, Whitehall may have just provided it.
The 136-page study, commissioned by the Government Office for Science, recommends using “psychological inoculation” in schools and public communications to build resistance against ideas it considers harmful. Among the targets are criticism of gender ideology, debate over transgender athletes and objections to LGBTQ+ activism in public institutions.
It is a remarkable proposition. Only a year after the Supreme Court reaffirmed that “woman” in the Equality Act refers to biological sex, a government-backed report is effectively suggesting that questioning gender ideology belongs in the same category as misinformation.
Perhaps most extraordinary is the report’s treatment of the Imane Khelif controversy. The Olympic boxer was barred from competing in future women’s World Boxing events after questions surrounding biological sex remained unresolved. Yet the report cites the statement “Imane Khelif is a man” as an example of “racist/Islamophobic misinformation”, despite the global debate centring on biological eligibility for women’s sport rather than ethnicity or religion.

The report extends far beyond gender issues. It also categorises claims about electoral fraud, criticism of the European Union and certain discussions around immigration as examples of misinformation requiring intervention. Readers could be forgiven for wondering where robust democratic debate ends and officially approved opinion begins.
The recommendations edge disturbingly close to state-sponsored thought management. Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Alex Burghart described the proposals as “frankly terrifying”, warning that they risk turning government into an arbiter of acceptable opinion rather than a defender of free expression.
He said: “It could end up restricting speech from those fighting for biological women’s rights, telling the truth about grooming gangs or criticising the EU.
“If PM-in-waiting Andy Burnham has any respect for free speech, he must ditch this outrageous attack on our rights. Whatever he does, the Conservatives will always fight for our democracy.”

The Government’s Counter Disinformation Unit, established during the Covid pandemic to tackle “false health information,” later faced criticism after it emerged that it had monitored lawful speech from lockdown critics and flagged online discussion surrounding asylum and immigration. Against that backdrop, calls for psychological techniques to inoculate the public against politically contentious views are unlikely to reassure those already concerned about creeping state involvement in policing opinion.
The Government insists the report is independent and does not represent official policy. Even so, commissioning research that frames lawful viewpoints as psychological threats raises an obvious question: when governments begin treating disagreement as misinformation, who decides where legitimate debate ends?
Single sex ruling
The Supreme Court’s single-sex space ruling will finally come into force at the beginning of August, Britain’s equality watchdog has said.
Guidance on the use of changing facilities and toilets will become effective on August 5 under the new law.
The code of practice comes into play more than a year after the Supreme Court ruled that “women” refers to biological sex for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010.
A spokeswoman for the group told GB News: “It has been a long wait for the Code of Practice and, along the way, we’ve had to deal with a lot of lies and misdirection. We hope that sense will now prevail as everyone gets on with complying with the law.
“Businesses and public bodies should now stop giving an ear to any organisation who tried to argue that the Code was wrong and pay heed to those of us whose interpretation of the Equality Act was vindicated by the most senior judges in the land.”
Meanwhile,more than 5,000 changing rooms and nearly 13,000 toilets could be amended to meet the new guidance, impacting hospitals, gyms and leisure centres across the UK.

PRAY: Pray that truth will never be suppressed under the guise of tackling misinformation, and that freedom to speak biblical truth will be protected.
Pray for wisdom and courage for Christian leaders, churches and believers to stand firm, speak truth with love, and refuse to be intimidated by cultural pressure.
Pray that those in government and public institutions will uphold justice, protect freedom of conscience and expression, and reject policies that undermine biblical values.
