Donald Trump – the Spiritual Dimension

Watching the inauguration of Donald Trump last night on TV in Kampala, Uganda, I could not help but be struck by how much the US ‘does God’ compared to the UK.

According to Al-Jazeera (!) the programme began with the President-elect attending the customary service at the nearby St John’s Episcopal Church.

Muslim pulled from programme

Before the 47th President and his Vice-President were sworn in, we saw an Invocation by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, and another from the Reverend Franklin Graham.

After President Trump’s speech, there was a Benediction first from Yeshiva University’s President Ari Berman, Senior Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church Detroit and the Reverend Frank Mann of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.

The programme (see the Al-Jazeera link above) had included a benediction from Imam Husham Al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center. But Religion News reported the Muslim leader was pulled after Jewish groups pointed out his support for Hezbollah. He is, after all, a Muslim, and hatred of Jews is, as we have pointed out beforenot least in this video on Israel and Hamas, written into their religion.

The Spiritual Dimension

The Spiritual Dimension of including the Rabbi and excluding the Mohammedan is massive. It was a spiritual mis-step to invite the imam in the first place.

But we also note the inclusion of two Roman Catholic bishops and two Pentecostals (Lorenzo Sewell’s barnstorming benediction is well worth watching) but no-one from the Anglican Episcopal Church. That sent a message that liberal theology is not welcome in the court of President Trump.

Indeed, the Donald’s insistence in his own speech (read the transcript here) that ‘there are only two genders: male and female’, drew cheers from those watching both outside in the Washington cold and here in Kampala.

Trump Speech ‘did God’

It was Tony Blair’s spin-doctor, Alastair Campbell, who said that administration did not ‘Do God’. In truth, no political party nor any leader of one in the UK Parliament, except for the DUP, either does God or grasps the spiritual dimension of life in general or public life in particular. We call and pray for them to humble themselves and acknowledge the King of kings.

But the United States does God, in its moments of grief, when leaders’ ‘thoughts and prayers’, not just their ‘thoughts’, are always with those affected, in its inauguration ceremonies and swearing-ins, and especially in the speech given by President Trump.

This did not just include the obligatory ‘God bless America.’ Mr Trump insisted: ‘We are one people, one family and one glorious nation under God.’ He promised ‘We will not forget our Constitution, and we will not forget our God.’ Above all, he declared his life ‘was saved by God to make America great again’.

First Executive Orders

On the BBC website, their North America correspondent, Anthony Zurcher, reports that Donald Trump’s executive orders have already pulled the USA out of the World Health Organisation and the Paris Climate Accord. He will end the promotion of electric vehicles and ‘Drill, Baby, drill’.

In a record number of executive orders, he has ended ‘work from home’ for federal workers and repealed previous executive orders promoting diversity programs and LGBTQ equality. He is certain to reinstate the ‘Mexico City policy’, defunding IPPF and other promoters of abortion.

President Trump has pardoned 1,500 6th January 2021 demonstrators. In his speech he promised to ‘reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from our military for objecting to the Covid vaccine mandate with full backpay. And I will sign an order to stop our warriors from being subjected to radical political theories and social experiments while on duty’.

Celebrations across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean

Across the developing world, pro-life and pro-family activists have been celebrating. Donald Trump might not stop the flow of the promotion of evil from the West, from the EU, UK, Ireland and Skandinavia, but now there will at least be a counterbalance.

USAID, which was promoting wickedness under Joe Biden, is now under new management. All over the world, there will be new US Ambassadors. And if Donald Trump is followed by a two-term J D Vance, who knows?

Let us not forget, in his first term, it was the US Ambassador to Kenya who organised ten other countries to stand with him in condemning the pro-abortion agenda of the UNFPA and asserting there is no human right to abortion (or sodomy for that matter) in any internationsl human rights instrument. Read about that here. If Hilary Clinton had been elected in 2016 for the 2017-2020 term, that would not have happened.

A need for prayer

Much of what Donald Trump is doing and will do is a direct challenge to EU and especially to UK anti-biblical ‘wokeness’. He stands for freedom of speech and is horrified by the sort of ‘two-tier justice’ we saw after the Southport demonstrations.

President Trump, like every leader of every nation on earth, needs prayer for humility before the King of kings and wisdom. The Bible says:
Prov 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

He also needs prayer for protection physically, emotionally and spiritually. The enemy will be out to thwart and block him from enacting anything righteous that might bless his nation and bring prosperity and the Kingdom of God. As it is written:
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

  1. Amen.

  2. Stephen,
I appreciate most of your sentiments about Trump and feel sure he will be a force for good. But despite all the mentions of God and your desiring prayer for him, there is no way this man is a converted true believer with his swearing, sexual sins of the past and allowing violent rebel rousers go free who injured over 100 policeman storming the Capitol!

    1. Bless you, Julian. The alternative was Kamala Harris. Never forget that.
They say ‘never let the perfect be the enemy of the good’. Don’t you agree that the dozens of executive orders passed so far, leaving aside that single one to which you object, are more biblical than the alternative’s would have been.
If we wait for a converted true believer… Mind you, if you can put up with a Catholic, in four years’ time, who knows?!

  3. This article is entirely appropriate re the Trump inauguration. However, like a previous correspondent, I think Trump uses Christian ‘religion’ for his own agenda and is not born again. Yet he has the wisdom to understand the importance of the spiritual dimension, which the clown idiots we have lumbered ourselves in government in the UK patently are too stupid to comprehend.
Personally, I think we have ‘had it’ in the UK. First I hold the national church leadership responsible for our abject parlous spiritual state. The leadership are a total disgrace on steroids. Then I hold the other political parties: Tories, Lib Dem (Lib dams) who are as stupidly ‘woke’ as the Labour clownish idiots.
Then we have ‘Reform’ . Looks initially encouraging, but there is a long way to go yet, and I do wonder whether they have the ‘bottle’ to rise to the challenge.
What a woeful nation we have become!

  4. Praying for our President is of course mandated in the Bible in Timothy and so we do,,,,,,,,I pray for him as a believer, because he is a believer. If there is not redemption through the Cross, what is the Cross for? Please do not keep President Donald John Trump in a place of no more becoming,,,,,,,,Thank God for a man who our Father has chosen for such a time as this,,,,,,,,,,,just like our Father in the past chose imperfect men to lead imperfect people to a more godly life,,,,,,,please, if you do not believe he is born again, pray, pray, pray,,God reveals thing to us for prayer not judgement. Someone prayed for me and I am sure for you as well! God Bless America and God bless you all or Y’all. I love the UK and pray daily for a revival fire movement that will burn around the world,,,,,,if you ever see an early map of the world you will see so very many places marked in red where the UK spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ,,,,,,,may it be so again Lord! In Jesus precious name!
