According to reports in the Daily Express<\/a><\/strong>, the Independent<\/a><\/strong> and RT<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>among others, the US has just landed the biggest shipment of military equipment since the Cold War at Bremerhaven in Germany as part of a NATO build-up.<\/p>\n

The Express said hundreds of tanks had been off-loaded at the port and are now trundling across Europe to Poland.<\/p>\n

The Indy ventured: ‘Some 3,500 troops from the 4th Infantry Division in Fort Carson, Colorado, will join up with the equipment, which includes 87 tanks and 144 Bradley fighting vehicles, over the next two weeks.’<\/p>\n

NATO exercise on Russian border<\/h2>\n

The military build-up is part of\u00a0a NATO sabre-rattling exercise to be held later this month on the Russian border.<\/p>\n

The MainStreamMedia line is typified by what has been written in the Daily Express: The exercise ‘comes amid growing fears that war-hungry Russian president Vladimir Putin<\/a><\/strong> could trigger an all-out global conflict’.<\/p>\n

In reality, the President of the Russian Federation is far too pragmatic to fall\u00a0into the trap. \u00a0Witness his refusal to respond<\/a><\/strong> when President Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats in the row over ‘the hack that never was<\/a><\/strong>‘. \u00a0Western diplomats\u00a0are well aware that Russia is only interested in defending its own\u00a0people, spheres of influence, bases and allies. \u00a0They must know Mr Putin has little ambition to recover old Soviet Union assets.<\/p>\n

What is the real reason?<\/h2>\n

So what might be the real reason for the military build-up? \u00a0These ideas may not be mutually-exclusive:<\/p>\n

1 President Obama, in the short time he has left, \u00a0is trying to ‘poison the well’ of relations between President Putin and President-elect Trump. \u00a0He gambles that Trump will not wish to appear ‘weak’ by bringing all the kit back home and that\u00a0therefore\u00a0Putin will remain in a cross mood.<\/p>\n

2 The myth of a ‘war-hungry’ President Putin is useful for NATO chiefs and their pals in the armaments industry in order to keep up defence spending.<\/p>\n

3 Some military people have not yet adjusted to the end of the Cold War.<\/p>\n

4 George Orwell’s prediction that governments would use wars and rumours of wars in order to distract the population from focusing on domestic problems is coming true in our lifetime.<\/p>\n

5 President Obama is incandescent\u00a0at the Syrian Government’s recovery of eastern Aleppo,\u00a0the strengthening of President Assad’s position and the vanishing likelihood\u00a0of ‘regime change’ in Syria.<\/p>\n

John Kerry, still annoyed by the House of Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

John Kerry still irritated by UK vote<\/h2>\n

To bolster the last\u00a0idea, outgoing US Secretary of State John Kerry last week expressed irritation at the vote in the House of Commons in 2013 against military action in Syria. \u00a0He blamed it for President Obama’s lack of action against President Assad and the latter’s subsequent military successes.<\/p>\n

Mr Kerry said: \u201cNow, we were marching towards that time when, lo and behold\u2026 Prime Minister David Cameron went to the parliament\u2026 and he sought a vote for approval for him to join in the action that we were going to engage in. And guess what, the parliament voted no, they shot him down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Kerry described how MPs\u2019 285 to 272 vote against joining American-led airstrikes<\/a><\/strong> led to the demands from the US Congress for its own vote on action. \u00a0It is good to be reminded of how great an answer to prayer was that historic vote in August 2013. \u00a0The link above shows how your MP voted.<\/p>\n
