condemns any breach of International Humanitarian Law; and calls for an urgent independent investigation into reports of breaches of International Humanitarian Law on both sides of the conflict.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Saudi Arabia bombed a funeral in Yemen<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9775\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/mps-debate-saudi-violence-in-yemen\/yemenmap\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9775\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap-300x296.jpg\" alt=\"Al Jazeera's map shows the areas held by the Houthi rebels in green and the government in red.\" width=\"420\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap-600x591.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap-768x756.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap-1024x1009.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/yemenmap.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Al Jazeera&#8217;s map shows the areas held by the Houthi rebels in green and those controlled by the government in red.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yemen&#8217;s\u00a0Shia Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-29319423\" target=\"_blank\">control the west of the country \u00a0including the capital city of Sanaa<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Al Jazeera <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/yemen-houthi-rebels-form-government-161128200652615.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports they have recently formed a government there<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0The coastal city of Aden is still in the hands of the Sunni Muslim internationally-recognised government of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.<\/p>\n<p>It amounts to a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia and neither side has been particularly scrupulous about observing human rights.<\/p>\n<p>However, Saudi Arabia, which backs the government, has the advantage of air power. \u00a0There have been many well-documented instances of Saudi air strikes causing great devastation in the Houthi areas. \u00a0One of the more notorious caused 140 deaths at a funeral. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/10\/10\/u-s-and-u-k-continue-to-actively-participate-in-saudi-war-crimes-targeting-of-yemeni-civilians\/\" target=\"_blank\">But the aircraft and arms used by Saudi Arabi are supplied by the US and the UK<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0That makes the UK complicit. \u00a0For that reason, MP&#8217;s have been calling for over a year for arms sales to Saudi Arabia to be curtailed.<\/p>\n<h2>EDM&#8217;s call for an end to arms sales to Saudi Arabia<\/h2>\n<p>In November 2015, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/edm\/2015-16\/665\" target=\"_blank\">Early Day Motion 665, tabled by Margaret Ferrier<\/a><\/strong>, called for an end to military exports to and military cooperation with Saudi Arabia. \u00a0The motion described it as &#8216;one of the most repressive regimes in the world&#8217;. \u00a0The motion has just thirty-three signatories to date. \u00a0No Conservative has signed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9779\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9779\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/mps-debate-saudi-violence-in-yemen\/funeral\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/funeral-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"The Saudi attack on a funeral in Sanaa left 140 dead.\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/funeral-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/funeral-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/funeral.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Saudi attack on a funeral in Sanaa left 140 dead.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On 1st March last year (2016) <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/edm\/2015-16\/1170\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Brake tabled Early Day Motion 1170<\/a><\/strong>, again calling for an &#8217;embargo&#8217; on\u00a0arms sales to Saudi Arabia. \u00a0It also asked for the UK government to condemn the use of cluster munitions against the Huthi rebels. \u00a0These were sold to the Saudis by the UK in the 1980s\u00a0(see below). \u00a0This motion has 59 signatories, again drawn solely from the ranks of Labour, LIbDems, SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Green Party&#8217;s MP.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2016, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/international-development-committee\/news-parliament-20151\/crisis-in-yemen-letter-publication-15-16\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Development Committee wrote to the Secretary of State<\/a><\/strong> for International Development, who was Rt Hon\u00a0Justine Greening MP at the time. \u00a0They too asked the government to suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia, noting these were worth \u00a33 billion since the start of the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>(The actual figure, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/uk-approves-33bn-arms-sales-yemen-126867279\" target=\"_blank\">according to Middle East Eye<\/a><\/strong>, is \u00a33.3 billion during the first twelve months of the Yemen conflict.)<\/p>\n<h2>Opposition called debate on Yemen last year<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9777\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/mps-debate-saudi-violence-in-yemen\/emilythornberry\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9777\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/emilythornberry-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Emily Thornberry MP\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/emilythornberry-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/emilythornberry-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/emilythornberry-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/emilythornberry-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/emilythornberry.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Thornberry MP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is not the first debate in the House of Commons on Yemen. \u00a0On Wednesday 26th October 2016 the Opposition tabled a debate. \u00a0They called for a &#8216;UN-led investigation &#8230;\u00a0into alleged violations of international humanitarian law in the conflict in Yemen&#8217;. \u00a0Labour&#8217;s Emily Thornberry\u00a0also called &#8216;on the Government to suspend its support for the Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces in Yemen until it has been determined whether they have been responsible for any such violations&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally\u00a0the Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, objected to all of that and tabled an anodyne amendment. \u00a0This was carried, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/commons\/2016-10-26\/debates\/61DFF92D-1BE0-4909-8020-76FC80CA5136\/Yemen\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Hansard record of the debate<\/a><\/strong>, by 283 votes to 193.<\/p>\n<p>Labour tabled the debate, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/yemen-war-atrocities-spotlight-during-british-parliament-debate-538175165\" target=\"_blank\">as Peter Oborne reported in Middle East Eye<\/a><\/strong>, &#8216;\u00a0in the wake of a recent Saudi coalition attack on a funeral in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which killed more than 140 mourners&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>UK\u00a0does not know where arms end up<\/h2>\n<p>In answer to a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FOI-2016-35142-Arms-Sales-to-Saudi-Arabia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom of Information request by Christian Voice<\/a><\/strong>, the\u00a0Department for International Trade admitted it does not know how many armaments sold to Saudi Arabia have been passed on by the Saudis to their client jihadis in Syria. \u00a0These include Al-Nusra Front (as was) and of course Islamic State.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9778\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/mps-debate-saudi-violence-in-yemen\/caat\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9778\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/caat-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"CAAT's Andrew Smith spoke at this conference on Yemen last year. It is not just the US which supplies Saudi Arabia. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.shafaqna.com\/news\/36628\" target=\"_blank\">The UK sold them \u00a33.3 billion worth of arms <\/a><\/strong>in the first year of the Yemen conflict. These have been used against civilians in Houthi rebel-held areas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Legal action is being taken by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caat.org.uk\/get-involved\/act-now\/petition\/stop-arming-saudi\" target=\"_blank\">Campaign against the Arms Trade<\/a><\/strong> to have the UK&#8217;s sales of arms to Saudi Arabia ruled unlawful. \u00a0This appears timely and with the political prevailing wind.<\/p>\n<p>The sale of arms is worth staggering amounts of money to the UK&#8217;s manufacturers. \u00a0One year ago, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/uk-has-sold-56bn-of-military-hardware-to-saudi-arabia-under-david-cameron-research-reveals-a6797861.html\" target=\"_blank\">Independent reported CAAT&#8217;s figures<\/a><\/strong> that since David Cameron came to power in 2010, licenses worth \u00a35.6 billion had been granted for arms sale to Saudi Arabia. \u00a0They are our biggest armaments customer worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>It is legitimate to ask if\u00a0the UK should be supplying arms to Saudi Arabia and other despots. \u00a0In practical terms, if we do not know and cannot control where they end up, they could be used against us. \u00a0But we can also ask if these are the actions of a constitutionally Christian nation.<\/p>\n<p>We should remember Judah&#8217;s king Jehoshaphat was condemned for forming a military alliance with the Ahab regime in Israel:<\/p>\n<p><strong>2Chron 19:2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/saudi-arabia-yemen-cluster-bombs-margaret-thatcher-a7519166.html\" target=\"_blank\">Under Margaret Thatcher&#8217;s administration<\/a><\/strong>, from 1986 to 1989, the UK sold cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia. \u00a0In 2010, one hundred nation states agreed to a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convention_on_Cluster_Munitions\" target=\"_blank\">Convention on Cluster Munitions<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0which prohibited their\u00a0use or production. \u00a0The UK is a signatory. \u00a0Saudi Arabia is not.<\/p>\n<h2>Can the UK stop meddling?<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the House of Commons <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/lords-select\/international-relations-committee\/news-parliament-2015\/crozier-luther-holmes-umut-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Relations Committee is taking evidence today<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0They are asking witnesses &#8216;How can the UK assist political reforms and stability across the Middle East?&#8217; \u00a0Many of our readers would respond: &#8216;By ending &#8216;Responsibility to Protect&#8217;, stop destabilising sovereign states, cease activities aimed at &#8216;regime change&#8217; and spend the money on the NHS or Transport, or Broadband. \u00a0Or anything else at home.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It is worth remembering that Saudi Arabia was, for most of the twentieth century, a client state of the United Kingdom. \u00a0The UK financially supported the Saud family. \u00a0(Please remember when pronouncing Arabic that each vowel is enunciated separately.) \u00a0The UK set up the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of oil in 1938 altered the dynamics of the relationship somewhat. \u00a0But how do matters\u00a0stand today? \u00a0Is the House of Saud merely an ally of the UK? \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/372979-british-collusion-sectarian-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Glazebrook suggests it goes further than that<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0He claims Saudi Arabia does the Middle Eastern dirty work for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9776\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9776\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/mps-debate-saudi-violence-in-yemen\/adencc\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9776\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/adencc-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Christ Church Aden during reconstruction in 1994\/1996. \" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/adencc-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/adencc.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christ Church Aden during reconstruction in 1994\/1996. Sadly, as a result of the violence, the church is now closed again.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Christians in Yemen<\/h2>\n<p>Whatever the truth of the UK\/Saudi relationship, life for the estimated 40,000 Christians in Yemen is now particularly harsh, with the Sunni jihadists and Islamic State elements who are active in the south and east of the country taking a particularly hard line. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2016\/05\/10\/christians-among-victims-unstable-yemen\" target=\"_blank\">Christian books including Bibles are being burned<\/a><\/strong> and churches have been damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicannews.org\/news\/2016\/12\/pray-for-peace-and-peace-builders-as-half-a-million-children-starve-in-yemen.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The fine Anglican church of Christ Church in Aden is closed again<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0It was only twenty years ago that a member of Christian Voice directed its restoration and set up the Ras Morbat Clinic alongside, providing healthcare for the poorest Yemeni patients.<\/p>\n<p>Pray for today&#8217;s Committee meeting, tomorrow&#8217;s debate, for an end to arms sales to anti-Christian despots, for CAAT&#8217;s court case and for the UK to stand up for Christians in Yemen and across the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Find out how to join Christian Voice and stand up for the King of kings (clicking on the link below does not commit you to join)<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/P1OVTZ-gb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3940\" style=\"border: 0px;\" title=\"Join Today!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Join_donate_Logo2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Please note that persons wishing to comment on this story must enter a valid email address.
