Although brought up as a Christian, she was considered a Muslim because that was the faith of her father, and when she married a fellow Christian, her marriage was not recognised by the court and she was convicted of adultery.<\/p>\n<p>But Sudan&#8217;s Appeal Court has quashed the lower court&#8217;s verdict and ordered her release.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-27979782\" target=\"_blank\">her lawyer told the BBC<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Meriam Ibrahim had been released from prison.<\/p>\n<p>It is not yet known where she is staying. \u00a0Her husband, Daniel Wani, said he was looking forward to seeing her.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wani, who is originally from South Sudan, said he wanted his family to leave Sudan as soon possible.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7679\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan063.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan063-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Christians from the UK outside the Sudanese Embassy in London on Friday 6th June 2014\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan063-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan063-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan063-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christians from the UK outside the Sudanese Embassy in London on Friday 6th June 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Mrs Ibrahim&#8217;s lawyer Elshareef Ali told the BBC:\u00a0&#8220;They have released her&#8230; she&#8217;s on her way to home.&#8221;\u00a0Mr Ali said Mrs Ibrahim had shown &#8220;extraordinary courage&#8221; during her ordeal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">The case led to a witness for Meriam outside the Sudanese Embassy on 6th June organised by Christian Voice and joined by the Pakistan Christian Association.<\/p>\n<p>Around <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/meriam-protest-london-sudan-embassy\/\" target=\"_blank\">35 Christians stood in witness opposite the Sudanese Embassy<\/a><\/strong> in Cleveland Row in London before moving across the road for the photographic record on the right.<\/p>\n<p>After singing hymns and praying for the mother-of-two and prisoner of conscience, those assembled signed and delivered a letter to the Sudanese Ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>IT was the only\u00a0demonstration for Meriam Ibrahim to be held at a Sudanese Embassy. \u00a0We believe it changed the spiritual dynamics and we regard her release as an answer to prayer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Her lawyer, Mr Ali, also told the BBC: &#8220;It&#8217;s a victory for freedom of religion in Sudan&#8230; By Meriam&#8217;s strong position, we believe that in the future no-one will be subjected to such a trial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It will be very welcome if that is the case, but since the secession of South Sudan, the position of Christians in the northern remainder has become difficult.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7680\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7680\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan-043.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan-043-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"The position of Christians in Sudan is now precarious.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan-043-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan-043-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Sudan-043-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The position of Christians in Sudan is now precarious.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sudan&#8217;s \u00a0President Omar al-Bashir\u00a0has pursued an Islamic identity after the Southern secession. \u00a0It is hard now to argue for multi-culturalism in Sudan. \u00a0South Sudanese resident in Sudan were told soon after the South&#8217;s independence <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irinnews.org\/report\/95335\/sudan-south-sudan-southerners-in-khartoum-increasingly-fearful\" target=\"_blank\">to leave or register as foreigners<\/a><\/strong>, but were provided no details about where and how to register. \u00a0Christianity is regarded as a South Sudanese religion.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedej-eg.org\/IMG\/pdf\/Christian_Communities_in_Khartoum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">In a report on Christianity in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan<\/a><\/strong>, the French research group CEDEJ concluded: &#8220;the current situation of Christian communities and churches in Khartoum is characterized by uncertainty and intimidation rather than a systematic violation of the religious rights from part of the Sudanese authorities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, Churches have been closed, burned by mobs and looted by\u00a0criminals while the police stood by. \u00a0Some church leaders report of a requirement by the authorities to register the land their churches stand on\u00a0which is difficult to meet. \u00a0High registration fees and corruption mean that a lot of land in Sudan is unregistered and for churches to be singled out and required to produce registration documents shows a level of harassment. \u00a0Sudan is a precarious place to be a Christian, despite <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/meriam-ibrahim-sudan-embassy-responds\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sudanese assurances to the contrary<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We give thanks for the release of Meriam Ibrahim, but must continue to pray for our Christian brothers and sisters in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Find out how to join Christian Voice and stand up for the King of kings (clicking on the link below does not commit you to join)<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/P1OVTZ-gb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3940\" style=\"border: 0px;\" title=\"Join Today!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Join_donate_Logo2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Please note that persons wishing to comment on this story must enter a valid email address.
