The orphans who lived in the monastery were also taken captive.<\/p>\n<p>A group calling themselves the \u201cFree Qalamoun Battalion\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/syria-nuns-kidnapped-hostage-swap-rebels-maaloula-528140\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>accepted responsibility<\/strong><\/a> for the seizure, which occurred at one of the most ancient Christians communities. The group is associated with al-Qaida and forms one of the many armies that have been trying to overthrow the lawful Syrian government.<\/p>\n<p>The kidnappers have refused to free the nuns until <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/syria-nuns-kidnapped-hostage-swap-rebels-maaloula-528140\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>their demands<\/strong><\/a> have been met. These demands include the release of 1,000 Syrian rebels held in regime prisons.<\/p>\n<p>Mother Pelagia is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/syria-abducted-nuns-islamist-rebels-maaloula-christians-527153\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>reported<\/strong> <\/a>to have got a message through to say that she and the sisters were \u201cfine and safe.\u201d In <a href=\"http:\/\/english.al-akhbar.com\/node\/17836\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>a video<\/strong><\/a> released by the rebels, Mother Pelagia and the nuns testified to their safety and well-being, although it is uncertain if they said this under duress. Metropolitan Philip, leader of the Antiochian Orthodox church in America, disregarded the video as a \u201cmockery,\u201d asserting that the nuns were forced into making this video under \u201cextreme psychological pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Nicola Daoud of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Tripoli and Koura has warned that Mother Pelagia and her nuns may suffer the same fate as two previously kidnapped archbishops that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/syria\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>we reported on last June<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7042\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Syrian-rebels.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7042  \" alt=\"Syrian rebels have raped at least 37,000 women in the civil war to overthrow the government.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Syrian-rebels.jpg\" width=\"307\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Syrian-rebels.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Syrian-rebels-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Syrian-rebels-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Syrian rebels have raped at least 37,000 women in the civil war to overthrow the government.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The worst case scenario is that the nuns have been raped and sexually abused by their captors. A report issued by the National Reconciliation Commission in Syria states that some 37,000 women have been raped since the civil war began. Raymond Ibrahim reported in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/2013\/12\/islamic_jihad_on_christian_nuns_a_history.html#ixzz2tKDYSt2Z\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The American Thinker<\/strong><\/a> that \u201cpro-war Islamic clerics have issued any number of fatwas, or Islamic rulings, permitting sexually frustrated, female-deprived rebels to rape women.\u201d The brutal history of attacks against women bear this out. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/2013\/12\/islamic_jihad_on_christian_nuns_a_history.html#ixzz2tKDYSt2Z\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Raymond Ibrahim<\/strong><\/a> has chronicled some of these:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Somalia: In response to Pope <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raymondibrahim.com\/islam\/warning-quote-history-at-your-own-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Benedict&#8217;s historical quotes<\/strong><\/a>, which, like so many other things &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/26873\/Rioting-protestors-demand-execution-of-teddy-bear-teacher\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>including teddy bears<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; so enraged the Islamic world, Muslims in Somalia shot Leonella Sgarbati &#8212; a 66-year-old nun who had devoted 30 years of her life working in Africa &#8212; in her back. Her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webdiocesi.chiesacattolica.it\/cci_new\/PagineDiocesi\/AllegatiTools\/222\/suor Leonella Sgorbati.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>last words<\/strong> <\/a>before dying in hospital were: &#8220;I forgive; I forgive.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Pakistan: In September 2012, gunmen on motorbikes dressed in green (Islam&#8217;s color) opened fire on the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral in Hyderabad, murdering at least 28 people. Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.persecution.org\/2012\/09\/19\/outrage-over-anti-islam-film-worries-christians-in-pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>immediate target was a nun<\/strong><\/a>, Mother Christina.<\/li>\n<li>Libya: In February 2013, after the fall of Col. Gaddafi, Islamic rebels threatened Christian nuns into fleeing the nation. They had been there since 1921, focused primarily on helping the sick and needy.<\/li>\n<li>Philippines: In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1341510\/Six-people-wounded-bomb-attack-Roman-Catholic-Church-priest-celebrates-Christmas-Day-mass.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>article<\/strong> <\/a>discussing a Christmas Day church bombing in a Muslim-majority region, we learn that the jihadi group responsible &#8220;has been blamed for several bomb attacks on the Roman Catholic cathedral in Jolo since the early 2000s and for kidnapping priests and nuns.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Guinea: In June 2013, during a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwatchmonitor.org\/2013\/07\/2629362\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>mob-led frenzy<\/strong><\/a>, Christians and their churches were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwatchmonitor.org\/2013\/07\/2629362\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>savagely attacked<\/strong> <\/a>in the Muslim-majority nation &#8212; with some 95 Christians slain and 130 wounded &#8212; including &#8220;the quarters of the nuns, [which] was looted before being torched.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>United States Strangely Silent Amid International Outcry<\/h3>\n<p>The lawful Syrian government and state-run news organizations have joined the international community to condemn the kidnapping of Mother Pelagia and her nuns.<\/p>\n<p>Syrian Prime Minister Najib Mikati <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailystar.com.lb\/News\/Middle-East\/2013\/Dec-06\/240106-group-claims-kidnapping-of-nuns-in-syria-report.ashx#ixzz2miB2uX9n\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>said that<\/strong><\/a> \u201cthese nuns devoted their lives to serve the orphans, the needy and the poor and they should be kept at a distance from political disputes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Syria\u2019s Relief and Social Affairs Minister, <a href=\"http:\/\/syrianetwork.wordpress.com\/tag\/kinda-al-shammat\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kinda al-Shammat<\/strong><\/a> has called on the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/en\/articles\/mother-superior-and-nuns-held-hostage-in-syria-say-reports\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>international community<\/strong><\/a>\u201d to pressure those countries who support terrorists to release their hostages, including terrorists in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>On December 2, 2013, Foreign and Expatriates Ministry sent two identical letters to UN Security Council chairman and UN Secretary-General,<a href=\"http:\/\/sana.sy\/eng\/21\/2013\/12\/02\/515654.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> saying that<\/strong><\/a> \u201cthe Arab Republic is facing a barbarian war launched by extremist takfiri gangs targeting its present and future.\u201d The Ministry went on to report the Mother Pelagia Sayyaf incident in Maaloula.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7044\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7044\" style=\"width: 251px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Metropolitan-Philip.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7044 \" alt=\"Metropolitan Philip has called on Obama to \" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Metropolitan-Philip.jpg\" width=\"251\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Metropolitan-Philip.jpg 597w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Metropolitan-Philip-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Metropolitan Philip has called on Obama to take a stand against the terrible kidnappings perpetrated by Syrian rebels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On December 4, 2013, Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry and the Russian Orthodox Church demanded the release of Mother Pelagia and her nuns. The rights ombudsman for Moscow\u2019s Foreign Ministry pressed the international community to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.ria.ru\/world\/20131204\/185257026.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>condemn the incident<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d because he believes Christians are increasingly in danger in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the United States government has shown reluctance to condemn this atrocious event even though it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/syria\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>been heavily involved in the Syrian situation<\/strong><\/a>. The uncomfortable reality is that the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/syria\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>has sent weapons<\/strong><\/a> and training to the very Syrian rebels who have been raping and pillaging Christian communities.<\/p>\n<p>Metropolitan Philip, leader of the Antiochian Archdiocese in the United States, wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiochian.org\/metropolitan-philips-letter-president-obama\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>a letter<\/strong><\/a> to President Obama and Mrs. Obama.
