In 2012,<em> Privacy International<\/em> accused the Government of allowing companies to <strong><a title=\"[opens in a new window]\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/2066744\/privacy-international-begins-tracking-surveillance-industry.html#tk.twt_\/article\/2066744\/privacy-international-begins-tracking-surveillance-industry.html\" target=\"_blank\">sell surveillance systems to repressive regimes<\/a><\/strong> in direct violation of the 2002 Export Control Act.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>In the Footsteps of Tony Blair<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6919\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/640_surveillance-camera.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6919 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/640_surveillance-camera.jpg\" alt=\"640_surveillance-camera\" width=\"307\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/640_surveillance-camera.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/640_surveillance-camera-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/640_surveillance-camera-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There is one surveillance camera for every 11 people in Britain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the Tony Blair years (1997\u20132007) the <a href=\"http:\/\/robinphillips.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/good-bye-tony-blair.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>precedent was set<\/strong><\/a> for Brits to surrender substantial liberties for the promise of increased security.<\/p>\n<p>While the opposition heavily criticized the Labour Government for its totalitarian measures, once in power the Tory Party continued along <a href=\"http:\/\/robinphillips.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/good-bye-tony-blair.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>the same trajectory set by Tony Blair, <\/strong><\/a>with significant increases.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Significant Increase<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The UK is now one of the world\u2019s leaders when it comes to surveillance cameras, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/10172298\/One-surveillance-camera-for-every-11-people-in-Britain-says-CCTV-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>one surveillance camera for every 11 people in Britain<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The full extent of Government spying surfaced last June when the UK commissioner published their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iocco-uk.info\/docs\/2012%20Annual%20Report%20of%20the%20Interception%20of%20Communications%20Commissioner%20WEB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>report of communication interceptions in 2012<\/strong><\/a>. The official report showed that Government surveillance has significantly increased from previous years, so that the UK now <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.workloadinnovation.com\/government-surveillance-threatens-democracy\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ranks third<\/strong><\/a> in terms of the vigorousness of domestic spying. Journalist Ryan Gallagher has summarized the data and produced graphs showing the full extent of this increase in surveillance. Gallagher <a href=\"http:\/\/notes.rjgallagher.co.uk\/2013\/07\/interception-commissioner-uk-surveillance-increase.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/a> that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2012, the report shows, there were a record 570,135 authorisations for police and other agencies to obtain so-called &#8220;communications data.&#8221; This can include subscriber information about suspects&#8217; phone and email accounts, as well as call and email records showing who a suspect is phoning\/emailing and when. It does not include the actual content of the communication.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the 570,135 figure is a 15 percent increase on the figure for 2011 and amounts to about an average 1,562 communications data authorisations every day. In addition, the commissioner noted in his report that &#8220;979 communications data errors&#8221; were made by authorities in cases involving the wrongful collection of data from innocent individuals. The botched surveillance had serious ramifications, with six members of the public &#8220;wrongly detained \/ accused of crimes&#8221; as a consequence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6918\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6918\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Edward-Snowden-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6918  \" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Edward-Snowden-008.jpg\" alt=\"Edward Snowden\" width=\"368\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Edward-Snowden-008.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Edward-Snowden-008-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Snowden revealed that the UK made a secret deal with the US to allow the NSA to retain personal information about Britons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This does not even include the massive array of \u2018legitimate\u2019 spying tools that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/2066744\/privacy-international-begins-tracking-surveillance-industry.html#tk.twt_\/article\/2066744\/privacy-international-begins-tracking-surveillance-industry.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>are available<\/strong><\/a> to firms throughout the UK.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secret Deal with USA<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As if their own totalitarian measures were not enough, the UK made a secret deal with the US in 2007 to allow the NSA to retain personal information about Britons\u2014such as cell phone numbers, emails, fax numbers\u2014that was previously off-limits.<\/p>\n<p>The contents of this deal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/nov\/20\/us-uk-secret-deal-surveillance-personal-data\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>were leaked to the public<\/strong><\/a> last November by whistle-blower Edward Snowden.<\/p>\n<p>While these increases in government surveillance are being enacted in the name of public safety, many people fear that<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/emmawoollacott\/2013\/11\/27\/is-the-uk-sleepwalking-towards-internet-censorship\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> Britain may be sleepwalking into a police state<\/strong><\/a>. When combined with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/street-preacher-arrested-dundee\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> the increase of censorship<\/strong> <\/a>against Christians who preach the gospel and a worrying trend towards <a href=\"http:\/\/robinphillips.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/thought-control.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>thought control<\/strong><\/a>, these measures could soon threaten our ability to honour God and preach the Gospel.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Confusing Government with God<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The normalization of the modern surveillance state in the West arises from the universal human temptation to surrender liberties for the promise of increased security, and to impute<a href=\"http:\/\/robinphillips.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/maternal-state.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> maternal characteristics<\/strong><\/a> to the state as a result.<\/p>\n<p>As Christians we recognize that some degree of public watchfulness is necessary if law-makers are to fulfil their God-given vocation of punishing evil-doers (Rom 13:4). However, what tends to happen when a society turns away from Christianity is that the state displaces God and begins ascribing to itself God-like attributes, including the attribute of omnipresence. Until the digital revolution, the impulse for the state to achieve omnipresence was limited by the natural constraints of time and place.
