I think what they do is absolutely wicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BBC says, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-24515938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in its story on Mr Paterson&#8217;s claim<\/a><\/strong>, that opponents of GM rice can point to\u00a0the World Health Organisation&#8217;s advocacy of routine administration of vitamin A supplements\u00a0in countries where deficiency is a problem.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Vitamin A is needed for healthy skin and eyes and to help strengthen the immune system so that the body can fight infections. Deficiency can lead to blindness, illness and death,&#8217; the BBC article went on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;People in the developed usually world get enough vitamin A from their diet by eating foods like cheese, yoghurts and eggs, but\u00a0deficiency is a common problem in developing countries, and is estimated to affect between 140 million and 250 million children under the age of five.&#8217;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6565\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6565\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gatesmonsanto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6565\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gatesmonsanto-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Gates reportedly owns 500,000 Monsanto shares\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gatesmonsanto-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/gatesmonsanto.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bill Gates reportedly owns 500,000 Monsanto shares<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rice would be made available only in the developing world. \u00a0The European Union has put such a break on the development of GM crops in member states that Monsanto has retreated into conventional plant breeding in Europe and\u00a0has said it will no longer seek approval of its products across the Union.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;\">There are no commercial GM crops in Britain, and there is only one active field trial, currently being grown under tight security at Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire. \u00a0<\/span>Across the EU, only two GM crops have been sanctioned for commercial planting.<\/p>\n<p>That is in contrast to the United States, where GM\u00a0corn (maize), soybeans, cotton, oil-seed rape and squash are commercially grown with around 85% of cotton and 50% of maize being\u00a0GM. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.organicconsumers.org\/ge\/GMonMarketUS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opposition has had only limited success<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Resistance is said to be growing in the developing world, despite heavy promotion by the Gates Foundation and United States Embassies world wide of GM crops manufactured by US giants Monsanto and Dupont. \u00a0With Swiss firm Syngenta, they together <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gmwatch.org\/gm-firms\/10558-the-worlds-top-ten-seed-companies-who-owns-nature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">account for 47% of the global proprietary seed market<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Owen Paterson became well-known for his opposition to gay marriage, and has also voted against civil partnerships, homosexuals adopting children, giant casinos, identity cards, hate-speech laws, the production of &#8216;saviour siblings&#8217;, and animal-human hybrids. \u00a0He voted in 2008 to limit abortion to 12 weeks, the most &#8216;pro-life&#8217; option on offer at the time.<\/p>\n<p>So how come Mr Paterson finds himself so emotionally attached to the bad guys in the GM debate?<\/p>\n<p>The Register of Parliamentary Interests merely records him accepting small-scale hospitality from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm\/cmregmem\/130507\/paterson_owen.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Betfair<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm\/cmregmem\/1782\/paterson_owen.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Century Media<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm\/cmregmem\/100203p\/memi22.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co-operation Ireland<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to go to Ascot and other posh parties. \u00a0He has not declared being on the pay-roll of any bio-tech company.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6563\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6563\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/ViscountRidley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/ViscountRidley.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew, Viscount Ridley\" width=\"220\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew, Viscount Ridley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Christian Voice has discovered that Owen Paterson is the brother-in-law, through his wife Rose, of Matthew, Viscount Ridley. \u00a0Matthew Ridley is<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/library.cshl.edu\/oralhistory\/speaker\/matt-ridley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visiting professor at Cold Spring Habor Laboratory<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0And what do they do? \u00a0The answer is: genetic modification of plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cshl.edu\/research\/plant-biology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Cold Harbor website proudly proclaims<\/a><\/strong>: &#8216;CSHL has taken part in numerous plant genome sequencing projects including\u00a0<em>Arabidopsis<\/em>, rice, sorghum and maize, as well as epigenomic sequencing and profiling.\u00a0 We are part of the iPlant Cyberinfrastructure consortium and the Long Island Biofuels Alliance. The Laboratory owns 12 acres of farmland nearby called Uplands Farm. Here, an expert staff raises maize, tomato and\u00a0<em>Arabidopsis<\/em>\u00a0plants for study.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Quite simply, it appears Owen Paterson has had his ear bent by his fellow land-owning aristocratic brother-in-law.
