The ancient Christian settlement of Maalouda in Syria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Syrian rebels have attacked an ancient Christian town in Syria.<\/p>\n

Residents fled as the\u00a0al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front\u00a0occupied\u00a0Maalouda<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Government forces are said to have all but retaken the town, but there are reports of fighting carrying on in the town, which housed 3,000 people, many of them speakers of\u00a0Aramiac, the ancient tongue spoken by the Lord Jesus himself.<\/p>\n

The BBC’s Jeremy Bowen<\/a><\/strong> disputed reports of wholesale damage to churches but confirmed that six Christians have been kidnapped.<\/p>\n

Mallouda is one of the most famous and historic centres of Christianity in the world. \u00a0The attack illustrates the threat faced by the Christian minority from the rebels, who want to evict all non-Sunni minorities, including the Alawites amongst whom President Assad is numbered, and establish an Islamic state in Syria.<\/p>\n

On 27th May, according to\u00a0the Assyrian International News Agency<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(AINA),\u00a0\u00a0armed rebels affiliated to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) raided the Christian-populated al-Duvair village in Reef on the outskirts of Homs near the border with Lebanon and massacred all its civilian residents, including women and children.<\/p>\n

Amid the chorus of denunciations of the brutality of President Assad’s forces, it has been difficult to hear any similar recognition of the abuses of the rebels from the likes of UK Foreign Secretary the Rt Hon William Hague and\u00a0US Secretary of State John Kerry.<\/p>\n

Kerry was accused of lying by the Russians last week after his response to a question from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee asking if the Syrian opposition had become more infiltrated by al-Qaeda.<\/p>\n

“Kerry responded that that was ‘basically incorrect’ and that the opposition has ‘increasingly become more defined by its moderation.'” reported USA Today<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Despite the clear intentions of the Islamist rebels to butcher religious minorities in Syria, and the atrocities committed by them (see George Galloway’s speech in the House of Commons<\/a><\/strong>), Western Governments, including the UK, France and the US, are still supporting the rebels and doing all they can to destabilise President Assad.<\/p>\n

Their actions, and those of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have kept the fighting going when the rebellion might well have come to an end. \u00a0Their support for the rebels has achieved nothing except tens of thousands of deaths and displacements.<\/p>\n

Yesterday the Washington Post reported<\/a><\/strong> that the CIA are now arming the Syrian rebels. Weapons deliveries have been ‘streaming into the country over the past two weeks,’ the paper said.<\/p>\n

This is despite the Russian intervention in which Syria will\u00a0join the Chemical Weapons Convention<\/a><\/strong>, but cruise missile strikes appear to have been averted after it became clear that the American Congress would join the UK House of Commons in voting against its executive’s desire to start bombing Syrian Government positions. \u00a0Congressmen were reporting that emails and telephone calls from constituents were in some case 244 to 1 opposed to military intervention. \u00a0A straw poll on WND’s news story reporting the figures<\/a><\/strong> is currently running at around 98% opposed.<\/p>\n
