Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, has warned of the danger of redefining marriage<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on BBC’s Question Time,\u00a0he said there was no great demand in the country for change and criticised the amount of parliamentary time devoted to the issue. \u201cI have just never felt that this is what we should be focusing on,\u201d he told the audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis change does redefine marriage. For millions of people who are married, the meaning of marriage changes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a real sense of anger among many people who are married that any government thinks it can change the definition of an institution like marriage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no huge demand for this and we didn\u2019t need to spend a lot of parliamentary time and upset vast numbers of people to do it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The comments from such a senior Cabinet colleague will embarrass David Cameron, and encourage Parliamentary opposition to the measure.<\/p>\n
