This is very important, so please read it carefully. \u00a0Increasingly we receive emails showing that people we know have been hacked<\/strong>.\u00a0 Leaving aside anti-virus like AVG and programmes such as MALWAREBYTES, you must use common sense and take basic precautions<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

The hackers work in two main ways:<\/p>\n

1 Email links<\/strong>.\u00a0 They try to get you to click on a bogus web-link in an email apparently from someone you know whom they have already hacked.\u00a0 SO: NEVER EVER click on links<\/strong> in a short email about a \u2018private message\u2019 or \u2018photographs\u2019 or \u2018make serious money\u2019 or just a link on its own.\u00a0 NEVER EVER click on a link<\/strong> which appears to be from your email provider saying\u00a0it is\u00a0an update<\/a><\/strong> or claiming you will lose your emails if you don\u2019t respond. or from your bank. \u00a0Such emails are known as ‘phishing’. \u00a0They wait for some unsuspecting person to take a bait. \u00a0 Also, it goes without saying: \u00a0NEVER OPEN an attachment<\/strong> you were not expecting.<\/p>\n

These links and attachments will all lead to \u2018trojan\u2019 websites<\/strong> which leave viruses or search for personal information on your computer. \u00a0They then hack into your email client programme and repeat the process to all your contacts in the twinkling of an eye.<\/p>\n

2 Phone calls out of the blue<\/strong> in which a plausible young man or woman asks you to verify your email address and password (or your bank account, or whatever).\u00a0 NEVER EVER give these people any information at all.\u00a0 If you are ringing your internet provider it is a different matter of course.<\/p>\n

If you receive a pleading email<\/strong> saying that a friend has been mugged in Spain or London (these are the most popular) or indeed anywhere else in the world and asking for money<\/strong>, they have been hacked<\/strong> in one of the ways above.\u00a0 Don\u2019t reply, but ring your friend immediately to let them know what has happened. \u00a0The hackers will have sent the mail to everyone on your friend’s address book and then they will have deleted the address book contents for good measure. \u00a0That is why you should not rely on web-based address books and should always back up addresses on your computer<\/strong>. \u00a0(If you do not know how to do that, email us<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

We hope this helps you protect your email address and personal details.\u00a0 Please circulate this webpage widely<\/strong>, but not as an anonymous link!\u00a0 Tell your friends what it is about and authenticate it with a personal message.<\/p>\n

Finally, to anyone who uses their work computer<\/strong>, particularly in the public sector, for Kingdom business, it will be wise especially in these days to let your Christian contacts know your personal email instead.\u00a0 Also, obviously, you should not be doing Kingdom work in the firm’s time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
