Andy Burnham has arrived at Downing Street as the UK’s seventh prime minister in just over a decade, promising a politics of humility, regional renewal and national repair. He admitted that \u201cwe have not been good enough and we need to be better, we will be\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his first speech, the PM pledged to make ending rough sleeping his priority, announce cost-of-living measures alongside details of how they will be funded, and publish a 10-year plan for Britain later this year. He promised to move power away from Whitehall and into communities, build more council homes, expand mental health support, help young people into work, reduce welfare spending, maintain fiscal discipline and create \u201ca new national sense of unity\u201d as he begins his premiership.<\/p>\n

His supporters present him as the antidote to Westminster\u2019s managerial class, a politician from outside the London bubble who understands struggling communities and wants to rebuild trust in public institutions. But every new Prime Minister inherits an unavoidable question: what does he actually believe when the cultural battles become unavoidable?<\/p>\n

Mr. Burnham\u2019s political style has always been one of moderation and reconciliation. He prefers the language of compassion, community and compromise. Yet Britain\u2019s most heated debates from gender identity and free expression to immigration and religious liberty are precisely the areas where compromise is increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n

Andy on ‘trans’ rights<\/h2>\n

Mr. Burnham\u2019s record as Mayor of Greater Manchester places him firmly within the mainstream of Labour\u2019s socially liberal tradition. He promoted<\/b><\/a> “LGBTQ policies”, appointed “LGBTQ” advisers and described Greater Manchester as a place committed to “equality for LGBTQ people.”<\/p>\n

He has also supported opposition to conversion therapy<\/b><\/a>, describing Greater Manchester as a place that should be safe for LGBTQ people. However, the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling that the words \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201csex\u201d in the Equality Act refer to biological sex has created a defining test for his premiership.<\/p>\n

The question now is whether Mr. Burnham will accept the judgment’s legal clarity or attempt to soften its implications under pressure from campaign groups within his own political movement. His supporters argue that he can defend trans people\u2019s dignity while respecting the law, but his previous record suggests a political instinct to prioritise gender identity over sex-based rights.<\/p>\n

The danger for the Labour leader is that the language of \u201cbe kind\u201d may prove insufficient when government must make hard decisions over single-sex spaces, women\u2019s protections, schools and public policy. The coming months will reveal whether his commitment to \u201cboth sides\u201d is genuine principle or whether Downing Street pressure will pull him back towards the activist wing of the debate.<\/p>\n

On abortion, Mr Burnham has generally aligned with Labour\u2019s pro-choice position, supporting continued access to abortion services rather than making opposition to abortion rights part of his political identity. His parliamentary voting record shows support for maintaining the existing legal framework, including opposing attempts to reduce the 24-week abortion limit.<\/p>\n

Burnham is wrong about Islam<\/h2>\n

In our previous article,<\/b><\/a> Christian Voice National Director wrote why Andy was wrong on Islam following the Manchester Arena bombing.
He said: \u201cThe message that I would want to get over \u2013 and this is how the vast majority of people feel \u2013 this man was a terrorist, not a Muslim.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe does not represent the Muslim community. We\u2019ve got to keep that distinction in mind all the time. This was an unspeakable act. The worst thing that can happen is that people use this to blame an entire community, the Muslim community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my view, the man who committed this atrocity no more represents the Muslim community than the individual who murdered my friend Jo Cox represents the white, Christian community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Green said: “Now of course that is propaganda. It is even more than Mr Burnham\u2019s personal opinion. It is the constant mantra of the political class and the mainstream media. And it is merely their hope, not a polled fact, that \u2018this is how the vast majority of people feel\u2019.<\/p>\n

“In an earlier post I said Mr Burnham \u2018devalues political discourse by claiming bomber Abedi was \u2018a terrorist not a Muslim\u2019. If he was not a Muslim, what was he? A Buddhist? If they can\u2019t face the truth, how will our leaders ever protect the public?”<\/p>\n

Get off the fence!<\/h2>\n

Mr. Burnham often presents himself as a tolerant politician. But tolerance is most meaningful when it protects unpopular views.<\/p>\n

Britain\u2019s free-speech debate has intensified because many citizens believe institutions have become too willing to police language, particularly around race, sex and gender. Others argue that stricter rules are necessary to combat harassment and discrimination.<\/p>\n

The question for Burnham is whether his politics of social harmony extends to people who challenge prevailing orthodoxies.<\/p>\n

A genuinely liberal approach would mean defending both transgender people\u2019s dignity and women\u2019s ability to debate sex-based rights; supporting religious communities while protecting minorities; and allowing citizens to express unpopular opinions without fear of professional punishment.<\/p>\n

In his final speech from Downing Street, Sir Keir Starmer spoke of a Britain that could \u201cunite different people under our common flag\u201d, a phrase intended as a message of national cohesion, but one that raises a more uncomfortable question: what exactly has been the cost of the approach taken during his time in office?<\/p>\n

For many voters, the word \u201caccommodation\u201d has come to define the political debate around immigration, a system that allowed large numbers of newcomers into the country while communities faced growing pressure on housing, public services and public finances. Sir Starmer began his speech pointing to falling immigration figures as evidence of progress, but has there been any consideration for its consequences? That includes pressure on communities, concerns over crime, and whether taxpayers will ever see a return on the money spent managing the failures of the system.<\/p>\n

Britain now awaits Mr. Burnham\u2019s announcement and his approach to immigration and integration. The hope among many voters is that the country is not entering another era of carefully crafted speeches from the steps of Number 10, while the underlying frustrations over borders, public services and social cohesion remain unresolved.<\/p>\n

Now more than ever, it is time to pray for our country.<\/p>\n
