A millionaire football club owner once presented to the public as a glossy symbol of modern success now faces a string of child sex offence allegations that would have made yesterday\u2019s lifestyle page look faintly embarrassing. Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 57, and his “second husband”, Scott Drewitt-Barlow, 32, appeared in court over accusations<\/b><\/a> of rape, sexual assault and modern slavery trafficking for sexual exploitation offences, only for Essex Police to announce yet more charges as the pair were remanded in custody and told they will stand trial in January.<\/p>\n

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow now faces a further 15 charges, including two counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of paying for sexual services of a child, five counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault, causing an individual to engage in sexual activity without consent, and causing or inciting sexual activity. Scott Drewitt-Barlow faces two further counts of rape and one count of causing or inciting sexual activity. That is not a typo. It is, regrettably, the sort of charge sheet that makes a mockery of the carefully polished image these men once enjoyed.<\/p>\n

“Targeted young males”<\/h2>\n

At Chelmsford magistrates\u2019 court, prosecutor Serena Berry said the men were alleged to have \u201ctargeted young males\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ms Berry told the court that the men had allegedly recruited young males, befriended them, groomed them, and invited them to their home and other premises. It is, frankly, a grim reminder that wealth and notoriety do not confer virtue, however much the media sometimes behaves as though they do.<\/p>\n

In 1999, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, a property developer, and his then partner Tony became one of the first “gay couples” to be named as same-sex parents on the birth certificates of their children, who were born to a surrogate in California. That fact was once treated as a sign of social progress by the sort of people who believe any headline with a slogan is automatically a moral achievement. Since then, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow has appeared in reality television programmes including Rich House, Poor House and Below Deck Sailing Yacht, which is apparently what passes for respectability now: a camera, a lifestyle, and enough public exposure to make people forget to ask harder questions.<\/p>\n

The couple, who own non league Maldon and Tiptree FC, were arrested during a raid at their home in Danbury, Essex, on 6 May and charged two days later. After their arrest, Detective Inspector Lydia George of Essex Police urged anyone with information to come forward through the Major Incident Public Portal and said specialist support would be available. That is as it should be.<\/p>\n

His 32-year-old partner, McGowan-Fazakerley, was sentenced to 25 years after being found guilty of sexual assault, child cruelty, and allowing Preston\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Baby Preston was placed with the \u201cgay couple\u201d within weeks of first meeting them. That speed was striking. It suggests not a cautious, child-centred process, but one that may have prioritised momentum over depth. In safeguarding, haste is not efficiency; it is risk.<\/p>\n

Both stories involve adults who were trusted, then exposed as allegedly or actually abusing that trust. In Barrie Drewitt-Barlow\u2019s case, the allegations centre on sexual exploitation and child sex offences, while Jamie Varley was convicted of sexually abusing and murdering a 13 month old child.<\/p>\n

A key similarity is the contrast between public image and hidden reality. Drewitt-Barlow was known as a reality TV figure and celebrity businessman, while Varley appeared to be a “respectable teacher” and adoptive parent.<\/p>\n

Another shared theme is safeguarding failure. In both stories, vulnerable people were allegedly or actually placed in situations where the adults responsible for their care or access turned out to be dangerous.<\/p>\n
