The Labour government has revived plans for a so-called \u201cconversion practices\u201d<\/b><\/a> ban, presenting it as a measure to protect “LGBT” individuals from “harmful treatment”. The proposal was briefly referenced in last Wednesday\u2019s King\u2019s Speech, where it appeared almost as an afterthought at the end of a sentence concerning the protection of residents living in “unsafe cladded buildings”.<\/p>\n

However, the phrase \u201cconversion therapy\u201d is deeply misleading. Many people associate the term with abusive practices such as electric shocks or forced medical procedures, even though such acts have long been illegal under existing UK law.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation is increasingly focused on children experiencing gender confusion and on limiting the ability of parents, teachers and counsellors to question or challenge a child\u2019s claimed gender identity. It means that\u00a0parents objecting to chest binders, teachers refusing preferred pronouns, or therapists asking difficult questions could face accusations of engaging in \u201cconversion practices\u201d. Campaigners supporting the bill frequently use terms such as \u201cbodily autonomy\u201d and \u201caffirmation\u201d, portraying disagreement or caution as harmful or discriminatory.<\/p>\n

For Christians, prayer, pastoral care, and voluntary counselling are part of religious freedom and personal choice. Criminalising those conversations would represent a serious attack on biblical teaching and freedom of belief. At the same time, pressuring therapists to affirm children on a path towards social or medical transition without proper safeguarding raises profound moral concerns.<\/p>\n

Christian Voice national president Stephen Green described the proposals as \u201cplain evil as well as an attack on God\u2019s creation\u201d. This is not safeguarding. It is ideological pressure placed on children at a stage of life when they are still developing emotionally and mentally.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The findings of Baroness Hilary Cass<\/b><\/a> were supposed to mark a turning point in Britain\u2019s approach to children experiencing gender distress. The Cass Review raised serious concerns about the lack of evidence behind youth gender treatments, criticised the \u201caffirmation-only\u201d culture that had developed within parts of the NHS, and warned that vulnerable children were being failed by a system driven more by ideology than careful clinical assessment.<\/p>\n

Yet despite those warnings, many public institutions continue to push gender ideology with little sign of caution. NHS trusts, schools, councils, and public bodies across Britain are still promoting policies based on “self-identification”, while concerns surrounding safeguarding, parental rights, and biological reality are increasingly dismissed as controversial.<\/p>\n

children experiencing confusion or distress require careful support, stability, and honest guidance. Instead, the political climate increasingly encourages immediate affirmation of “gender identity” without properly exploring emotional, psychological, social, or developmental factors.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, questions are also growing over why the Government has still not fully approved updated guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission following the Supreme Court ruling that sex in law refers to biological sex.<\/p>\n

“Ban Would Do Untold Harm”<\/h2>\n

As Bev Jackson noted on Spiked Online<\/b><\/a>, “the case of psychiatrist Az Hakeem exposed how quickly professional concern can be reframed as wrongdoing. Dr Hakeem faced a complaint after asking a female patient why she identified as male during therapy sessions. Although the complaint was eventually dismissed, the message sent to professionals was unmistakable: questioning gender identity carries risk.”<\/p>\n

The likely consequence is that many therapists will simply stop exploring underlying causes altogether. Fear of accusations, investigations, or legal consequences discourages honest clinical discussion and replaces it with automatic affirmation.<\/p>\n

Parents are increasingly finding themselves in the same position. Families who hesitate over social transition or medical intervention can now be portrayed as “unsupportive” rather than cautious. Labour\u2019s proposed ban will intensify this climate further, leaving adults too afraid to speak honestly with vulnerable children about identity, mental health, safeguarding, or biological reality.<\/p>\n

“We at LGB Alliance take the view not only that no new legislation is necessary, but also that the proposed ban would do untold harm to \u2018gender-non-conforming\u2019 children and young people \u2013 most of whom would simply grow up to be gay, lesbian or bisexual if not sterilised in a futile attempt to change sex. Or, as we call it, \u2018transing away the gay\u2019,” Bev Jackson wrote.<\/p>\n

Britain Ignores International Warnings<\/h2>\n

Countries including Sweden<\/span><\/span>, Finland<\/span><\/span>, Norway<\/span><\/span>, France<\/span><\/span>, and Denmark<\/span><\/span> have reassessed aspects of youth gender medicine following growing concern over puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and irreversible medical interventions involving minors. Serious questions are being asked internationally about whether vulnerable children were pushed too quickly towards transition pathways.<\/p>\n

Yet Britain continues moving deeper into ideological affirmation. Instead of slowing down and examining the evidence carefully, political pressure is increasingly directed at silencing caution and criminalising disagreement.<\/p>\n

Children deserve protection from irreversible decisions made during periods of confusion, distress, or social influence. Laws that discourage questioning do not protect vulnerable young people; they leave them exposed to greater risk.<\/p>\n

A nation that loses confidence in truth will eventually lose confidence in safeguarding itself. Britain does not need more confusion dressed up as progress. It needs wisdom, courage, and leadership grounded in truth.<\/p>\n

Pray that political leaders and lawmakers will create policies that protect people from abuse without restricting legitimate religious practice, pastoral support, or open conversation.<\/p>\n
