“Nothing neutral about ‘pride’ flags”<\/h2>\n
Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, has condemned the council\u2019s proposal, describing the flag as \u201cnot neutral\u201d and warning that it represents \u201can adherence to an anti-scientific position on sex and gender\u201d.<\/p>\n
Fiona McAnena, director of campaigns for the sex-based rights charity Sex Matters, echoed those concerns, stating that councils should not fly symbols that demonstrate allegiance to what she called \u201ca highly contested ideology, that of transgenderism\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis goes much further than normal support for gay rights,\u201d she said. \u201cElected councillors and local authority officials have a public duty to treat everyone fairly, but flying this flag signals that the council favours all things LGBTQ+, since that\u2019s what the flag represents.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added that the symbolism sends a chilling message to women and others who raise legitimate concerns about the erosion of sex-based protections.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been obvious for years that some trans demands are not compatible with women\u2019s rights,\u201d McAnena said. \u201cHere\u2019s a local authority flying the flag that says, in effect, women\u2019s rights don\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her concerns follow an April 2025 Supreme Court ruling that confirmed sex under the Equality Act refers to biological sex.<\/p>\n
Public bodies and businesses are now awaiting fresh guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission explaining their legal duties to protect single-sex spaces in light of the ruling.<\/p>\n

In another case, a London borough <\/b><\/a>removed a ‘Progress Pride flag’ following legal advice that it could be interpreted as political messaging.<\/p>\n Also, a council in Derbyshire<\/b><\/a> removed a ‘Pride flag’ following complaints from Christians in the area. Meanwhile, In Kent<\/b><\/a>, the new Reform led council pledged to stop flying Pride and other flags, prompting debate about council neutrality and political flag policies.<\/p>\n In the North East of England<\/b><\/a>, a High Court ruled that Northumbria Police breached impartiality by marching under a ‘Progress Pride flag’ at a ‘Pride march’.
