This silence was challenged when American comedian and talk show host <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/angelusnews.com\/news\/world\/bill-maher-nigeria-christians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bill Maher<\/b><\/a> raised the issue on Real Time (HBO) in late September 2025, questioning why Gaza receives extensive media attention while Nigeria\u2019s genocide of Christians is largely ignored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria,\u201d Mr. Maher said. \u201cThey\u2019ve killed over 100,000 since 2009. They\u2019ve burned 18,000 churches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the comedian is a self-proclaimed apatheist, his blunt comparison awakened a conversation many believers have avoided.<\/p>\n<p><b>Isaiah 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When God wants to expose injustice, He sometimes uses unexpected voices. The question is not whether Mr. Maher believes in Christ, but whether the Church still believes in defending its own persecuted members.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #ffff00; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; border-radius: 9px; background-color: #800080; border-top: 9px solid #800080; border-bottom: 9px solid #800080; border-right: 18px solid #800080; border-left: 18px solid #800080; display: inline-block;\" title=\"Opens in a new tab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Join or Support Christian Voice \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Massacres that barely make the news<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/charred-bodies-shattered-lives-after-gunmen-kill-100-nigeria-2025-06-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>In June 2025,<\/b><\/a> gunmen stormed Yelwata in Benue State, central Nigeria, killing more than 100 villagers, most of them Christians. Entire families were burned alive in their homes.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nigeria-raid-attack-killed-db71fad73dc1a15499079d5e6af19339\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>In April 2025<\/b><\/a>, Zike village in Borno State suffered a similar fate: 40 Christian farmers were murdered by suspected Fulani militants.<\/p>\n<p>On Christmas Day 2023, over 160 Christians were killed in Plateau State during what was described as a \u201cChristmas massacre\u201d. Churches were razed and pastors beheaded.<\/p>\n<p>These are not isolated tragedies but part of a pattern \u2014 what many experts, including Intersociety and Open Doors, call a slow genocide of Christians in Nigeria\u2019s \u201cMiddle Belt.<\/p>\n<p><b>Revelation 6:9 And I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Each statistic hides faces, families, and faith that refused to renounce Christ. The blood of these martyrs calls the global Church to remember that Christianity still costs everything in many lands.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7LRwAUw2rZw?si=SVyIdJFB2XxzZn6h\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>The official denial<\/h2>\n<p>The Nigerian government <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/christian-killings-fg-disagrees-as-can-backs-us-senator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>denies<\/b><\/a> that Christians are being specifically targeted, calling the violence \u201cterrorism that affects all communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A presidential spokesperson dismissed U.S. Senator Ted Cruz\u2019s statement that Nigeria is facing a Christian genocide as \u201ccareless rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/cdp-2024-0024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>official statistics<\/b><\/a> tell another story. In northern and Middle Belt states, Christians are up to eight times more likely to be killed in attacks than Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/truthnigeria.com\/2025\/04\/northern-nigerias-death-penalty-for-blasphemy-must-go-ecowas-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>blasphemy laws<\/b><\/a> in states such as Kano still carry the death penalty. Christian student Deborah Yakubu was stoned to death in 2022 after she thanked Jesus in a university group chat. No one was prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p><b> Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When authorities deny persecution, they aid the persecutors. Christians must speak truth even when governments will not. Silence is complicity.<\/p>\n<h2>The world begins to awaken<\/h2>\n<p>International concern is finally stirring. In the U.S., Senator <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sen-cruz-introduces-bill-against-persecution-of-nigerian-christians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ted Cruz<\/b><\/a> introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act in 2025, seeking sanctions against Nigerian officials who enable or ignore religious violence.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Cruz said, \u201cNigerian Christians are being targeted and executed for their faith by Islamist terrorist groups, and are being forced to submit to sharia law and blasphemy laws across Nigeria. It is long past time to impose real costs on the Nigerian officials who facilitate these activities, and my Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act uses new and existing tools to do exactly that. I urge my colleagues to advance this critical legislation expeditiously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CDP-2025-0076\/CDP-2025-0076.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>In the UK,<\/b><\/a> Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief David Smith named Nigeria as a \u201cpriority country\u201d for action.<\/p>\n<p>Even secular commentators such as Bill <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/bill-maher-christians-nigeria-10797095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Maher<\/b><\/a> have now forced mainstream journalists to confront the silence.<\/p>\n<p><b>Proverbs 31:8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The tide may be turning, but only if pressure continues. Christians must be the moral conscience of their governments, insisting that truth and justice prevail.<\/p>\n<h2>A Church that suffers in silence<\/h2>\n<p>For Christians in northern and central Nigeria, persecution is not an eventt, it is daily life.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-61830085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>In June 2022,<\/b><\/a> gunmen attacked St Francis Xavier Church in Owo, Ondo State, during Pentecost Mass, killing over 50 worshippers, including children.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2023, <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window \" href=\"https:\/\/persecution.org\/2023\/05\/19\/killings-continue-in-nigeria-farming-communities-despite-curfew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>over 100 Christians<\/b><\/a> were killed in Mangu in Plateau State, their homes burned and churches desecrated.<\/p>\n<p>Every week brings fresh names of martyrs, yet few outside Africa hear their stories. While the West debates theology, believers in Nigeria live the Book of Acts under fire.<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1 Corinthians 12:26 If one member suffer, all the members suffer with it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The persecuted Church does not ask for pity, only prayer, advocacy, and remembrance.
