MPs will be shielded from the very council tax premium on second homes that they voted to impose on the public, in a move that smacks of double standards.<\/p>\n

As ordinary homeowners brace for eye-watering tax hikes on inherited and additional properties, MPs have conveniently secured a taxpayer-funded escape route.<\/p>\n

From this month, town halls will be able to slap a 100% surcharge on second homes,<\/b><\/a> with thousands of homeowners now facing ruinous bills. But MPs? Their accommodation budgets have been \u201cuplifted by a significant amount\u201d to absorb the extra charge\u2014meaning the taxpayer, once again, picks up the tab.<\/p>\n

Leaked email lays bare the shameless scheme<\/h2>\n

A leaked email to MPs from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), exposed by The Telegraph, spells it out plainly.<\/p>\n

IPSA informed MPs that their budget had been substantially increased \u201cto mitigate the additional charge\u201d, ensuring they won\u2019t feel the sting of their own policy.<\/p>\n

And if that generous boost isn\u2019t enough? No worries. IPSA is \u201chappy to discuss contingency\u201d to make sure MPs never have to dig into their own pockets. Meanwhile, ordinary Britons are opening bills demanding up to \u00a310,000 extra, struggling to understand how they will afford it.<\/p>\n

A tax for the poor, A get-out clause for the powerful<\/h2>\n

Over two-thirds of English councils have introduced this levy, arguing it\u2019s necessary to fill budget shortfalls.<\/p>\n

Regular homeowners\u2014many of whom never planned to own a second property but inherited one\u2014are being hammered with bills they simply can\u2019t pay.<\/p>\n

But MPs, including many who voted for these new charges, have quietly ensured they\u2019ll never have to suffer the consequences. Instead, their burden is conveniently shifted onto the same taxpayers who are already being squeezed dry.<\/p>\n

Public outrage: \u2018It\u2019s extortion\u2019<\/h2>\n

Across the country, homeowners are furious. Telegraph Money<\/b><\/a> has been inundated with complaints from those who say they feel \u201cextorted\u201d by their local councils. Families who have inherited modest properties, or saved for a second home as a future nest egg, now face devastating financial hits.<\/p>\n

John O\u2019Connell of the Taxpayers\u2019 Alliance summed up the anger, saying: \u201cThis will only pour salt in the wounds of those homeowners now facing 100% premiums just for having the temerity to own a second home.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for MPs? No such worries. They are neatly shielded from the financial pain, despite being the architects of this policy.<\/p>\n

Labour ministers among the biggest beneficiaries<\/h2>\n

This isn\u2019t a one-off scandal\u2014it\u2019s been happening for years. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, had claimed \u00a310,800 of taxpayers’ money <\/b><\/a>over five years to cover her second home council tax bill. And she\u2019s far from alone.<\/p>\n

At least 41 Labour Ministers\u2014including Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds\u2014have routinely claimed this expense back, ensuring they never personally feel the impact of rising council tax costs.<\/p>\n

Broken trust, broken system<\/h2>\n

The outrage isn\u2019t just about the money\u2014it\u2019s about the principle. MPs are meant to serve the public, not exploit the system for personal financial gain. The fact that they have insulated themselves from the consequences of their own policies while forcing everyone else to pay up is a betrayal of trust.<\/p>\n

If MPs truly believed in the fairness of this new tax, they would pay it themselves\u2014just like everyone else. Instead, they have chosen to dump their financial responsibilities onto the very taxpayers they claim to represent.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s yet another example of a broken system where politicians make the rules, but never have to live by them.<\/p>\n
