Its 80th anniversary should have been today. Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), and Bernard Montgomery had already decided the date.

They wanted a full moon with a spring tide flowing towards high water at dawn. But if the flotilla had set sail in the early morning of the 5th, it would at best have been blown off course and at worst destroyed.

Two things saved D-Day. One, the most important of all, was the constant prayer led by the God-fearing King George VI. We shall come back to that. Because the other was a young woman in Ireland.

Ireland passed weather reports to the UK

Maureen Flavin was born in the Republic of Ireland on 3rd June 1923. It was an important station for forecasting as it lay on one of the most westerly parts of Ireland.

Readings on her birthday

Group Captain James Stagg

At 1am, on the morning of her 21st birthday, she awoke and went out to take the hourly reading. The station instruments showed a slight drop in air pressure, a 7-mile-per-hour wind from the south-west accompanied by drizzle. Over the following six hours the readings showed a continuing drop in pressure, a steady wind and heavier rain.

The drop in pressure was the first indication of an incoming severe storm that could make any crossing of the English Channel extremely hazardous. Maureen woke Ted Sweeney, the postmistress’s son, to confirm the readings. Young Mr Sweeney confirmed Miss Flavin’s readings and they sent the report on to Britain.

Royal Air Force officer Group Captain James Stagg was the chief meteorologist to General Eisenhower. The commander decided to postpone the invasion.

Rommel went home!

General Erwin Rommel

During that day and the next, Maureen Flavin continued to take her readings and noticed a steady rising of the pressure. The storm was passing over. Again the readings reached Captain Stagg. So it was that General Eisenhower postponed the invasion by just 24 hours, from 5th to 6th June. How important it is for us, just like Maureen Flavin, to ‘do the little things’ that only we can do.

The Germans did not have these weather forecasts. In addition, under ‘Operation Fortitude’, British double-agents had convinced their German spymasters that the invasion was set for Calais. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel was in charge of the Normandy defences which were manned, lighter than those in Calais, just in case.

But when he saw the storm, General Rommel convinced himself it was set in for days. He too knew the allies only had a small tidal window if the invasion was to happen there at all. So, as the BBC reports, he left to be present at his wife’s birthday back home in Bavaria, taking her a pair of shoes. That confusion, I submit, is the Lord’s work in answer to all the prayer which had been made, and that which was about to come. Prayer saved D-Day.

The King’s speech

The actual date of D-Day together with its location was kept secret, again by the grace of God. They did, however, tell King George, who wrote a speech and delivered it by radio on the morning of 6th June, as the troops were landing. The Palace uploaded it to their website exactly five years ago today. It is well worth reading in full or you can listen to it here:

Cleverly, His Majesty did not mention the site of the invasion, or even that it was happening. He had already called for prayer six times previously during the war. So once again, in a speech informed by spiritual realities, the king simply called for prayer.

’I call my people to prayer’

He began: ‘Four years ago, our Nation and Empire stood alone against an overwhelming enemy, with our backs to the wall. Tested as never before in our history, in God’s providence we survived that test; the spirit of the people, resolute, dedicated, burned like a bright flame, lit surely from those unseen fires which nothing can quench.’

His Majesty went on to speak of ‘a supreme test’. Now it was ‘not to fight to survive but to fight to win the final victory for the good cause’. The nation needed ‘something more than courage and endurance; we need a revival of spirit, a new unconquerable resolve’.

In ‘this new summons of destiny’, said King George, ‘I desire solemnly to call my people to prayer and dedication. We are not unmindful of our own shortcomings, past and present. We shall ask not that God may do our will, but that we may be enabled to do the will of God: and we dare to believe that God has used our Nation and Empire as an instrument for fulfilling his high purpose.’

Insights from a man of God

Look at these insights from a man of God: ‘I hope that throughout the present crisis of the liberation of Europe there may be offered up earnest, continuous and widespread prayer. We who remain in this land can most effectively enter into the sufferings of subjugated Europe by prayer, whereby we can fortify the determination of our sailors, soldiers and airmen who go forth to set the captives free.’

He said the Queen ‘well understands the anxieties and cares of our womenfolk’ who would ‘find, as she does herself, fresh strength and comfort in such waiting upon God. She feels that many women will be glad in this way to keep vigil with their menfolk as they man the ships, storm the beaches and fill the skies.’

In this speech inspired by God, King George concluded: ‘At this historic moment surely not one of us is too busy, too young or too old to play a part in a nationwide, perchance a worldwide, vigil of prayer as the great crusade sets forth. If from every place of worship, from home and factory, from men and women of all ages and many races and occupations, our intercessions rise, then, please God, both now and in a future not remote, the predictions of an ancient Psalm may be fulfilled: “The Lord will give strength unto his people: the Lord will give his people the blessing of peace”.’ (Psa 29:11 Book of Common Prayer)

As this video from Christian Concern recalls, much prayer surrounded D-Day, and it was miraculously answered.
