The NHS has banned the prescription of puberty blockers to children in England.<\/p>\n

The decision stems from an independent review of services for children under 18 and a sharp rise in referrals to the Gender Identity Development Service run by the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust.<\/p>\n

These clinics are set to shut down as a result of the\u00a0 findings, marking the end of their services by the close of March.<\/p>\n

Not enough evidence of safety<\/h2>\n

The NHS<\/b><\/a> has stated that its decision is based on insufficient evidence supporting the safety or clinical effectiveness of puberty blockers.<\/p>\n

‘Puberty blockers are not available to children and young people for gender incongruence or gender dysphoria because there is not enough evidence of safety and clinical effectiveness.<\/p>\n

‘From around the age of 16, young people with a diagnosis of gender incongruence or gender dysphoria who meet various clinical criteria may be given gender-affirming hormones alongside psychosocial and psychological support.’<\/p>\n

Flawed NHS decision<\/h2>\n

The decision by the NHS to ban the prescription of puberty blockers is a welcome development. However, it is significantly flawed with the clause\u00a0 of still\u00a0 giving ‘young children diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” gender-affirming hormones.’<\/p>\n

Mark 2:17 When Jesus heard it, He said unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.<\/b><\/p>\n

Given the clauses attached above, it is crucial to enact a ban on hormone-altering injections for individuals of all ages.<\/p>\n

‘Children\u2019s safety and well-being is paramount’<\/h2>\n

Health minister, Maria Caulfield, said: ‘We have always been clear that children\u2019s safety and wellbeing is paramount, so we welcome this landmark decision by the NHS.<\/p>\n

‘Ending the routine prescription of puberty blockers will help ensure that care is based on evidence, expert clinical opinion and is in the best interests of the child.’<\/p>\n

The consultation on the future of services received more than 4,000 responses, including around a quarter from members of the public, 22% from patients, 21% from parents, 10% from trans adults and 5% from clinicians.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cass’ review<\/h2>\n

In February 2022, Dr Cass published an interim report saying there was a need to move away from one unit and recommended the creation of regional services to better support youngsters.<\/p>\n

She also pointed to a lack of long-term evidence and data collection on what happens to children and young people who are prescribed medication.<\/p>\n

She added that Gids had not collected routine and consistent data \u201cwhich means it is not possible to accurately track the outcomes and pathways that children and young people take through the service.\u201d<\/p>\n
