The Government has announced a plan to give Tata \u00a3500 million to close the blast furnaces, install electric arc furnaces instead and make 3,000 steel workers redundant. Faced with an open goal of the absurdity of the Net Zero agenda, this is how their motion for debate began:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That this House recognises the need to decarbonise steel production&#8230;\u2019 before complaining the government plan \u2018will result in thousands of steelworkers losing their jobs and risk leaving the UK as the first developed country in the world without the capacity to produce primary steel &#8230; and is therefore concerned about the impact that the Government\u2019s plans could have on national security\u2019. It also worries about \u2018irrevocably damaging working people\u2019s trust in the opportunities the net zero transition could bring.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that \u2018carbon\u2019, in the form of coking coal, is essential to the process of making primary steel. As it burns, the coke in the blast furnace \u2018robs\u2019 the oxygen from the iron oxide ore, releasing the iron in a molten form. <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window\" href=\"https:\/\/steelmuseum.org\/steelmaking_exhibit_2016\/blast_furnace.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>See HERE<\/b><\/a>. You can\u2019t \u2018decarbonise\u2019 a blast furnace.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; border-radius: 9px; background-color: #800080; border-top: 9px solid #800080; border-bottom: 9px solid #800080; border-right: 18px solid #800080; border-left: 18px solid #800080; display: inline-block;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stewardship.org.uk\/pages\/cv01\">Support Christian Voice \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Electric Arc Furnace<\/h2>\n<p>The electric arc furnace is for a different purpose, to melt down and recycle scrap ferrous material into lower grade steel. <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/bc91954a-fb1c-11e5-b3f6-11d5706b613b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>As the FT reports<\/b><\/a>, each arc furnace uses colossal amounts of electric power, enough for a small town, which has to be generated using, in the absence of a thriving UK nuclear power industry, er, fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian (see below) describes electric arc furnace as \u2018a greener and cheaper process.\u2019 It is true, it is cheaper in that it uses fewer men to operate it, and it may be quicker, but it does not yet make new high-grade product. That being said, the UK only currently recycles 3 million tons of scrap steel. Sir Robert Goodwill observed in the debate and was supported by the minister Ms Ghani, that we export some 8 million tons to China, rather like Kenya, which exports all its iron ore to China and, like the UK, buys steel back. We should be recycling our scrap steel mountain here.<\/p>\n<p>So blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces are not an \u2018either\/or\u2019 but a \u2018both\/and\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; border-radius: 5px; background-color: #1f7f4c; border-top: 9px solid #1F7F4C; border-bottom: 9px solid #1F7F4C; border-right: 18px solid #1F7F4C; border-left: 18px solid #1F7F4C; display: inline-block;\" title=\"Opens in a new tab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/arrange-a-meeting-at-your-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ask us to come and speak at your church \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Steel-making exempted from COP28<\/h2>\n<p>The COP28 conference in December agreed to contribute to \u2018transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science,\u2019 according to the final global stocktake draft text.<\/p>\n<p>It spoke about \u2018accelerating efforts towards the phase-down of unabated coal power.\u2019 Greta Thunberg was angry with the agreement not going far enough or fast enough for her. But then again, whenever isn\u2019t poor Greta angry?<\/p>\n<p>However, note that the \u2018transition away\u2019 from fossil fuels was specifically stated as being for \u2018energy systems\u2019. It did not and does not apply to plastics, transport or agriculture. Nor does it apply to the manufacture of new iron in blast furnaces. <u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; color: #ffffff; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; border-radius: 9px; background-color: #0000ff; border-top: 9px solid #0000FF; border-bottom: 9px solid #0000FF; border-right: 18px solid #0000FF; border-left: 18px solid#0000FF; display: inline-block;\" title=\"Opens in a new tab\" href=\"https:\/\/www.petitions.net\/reject_net_zero_policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reject Net Zero policies \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>UK Steel<\/h2>\n<p>So there is no reason for the UK to close the blast furnaces in Port Talbot, at the cost of thousands of jobs and the UK\u2019s steel security, becoming the only G20 nation which cannot make virgin steel, all the while citing \u2018climate change\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A similar crazy deal at Scunthorpe will mean the UK ending up as the only G20 country that cannot make steel from raw materials, <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/jan\/18\/tata-steel-to-shut-down-port-talbot-blast-furnaces-3000-jobs-at-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>As the Guardian reports<\/b><\/a>. Yet neither the Guardian, nor the senior Union and Labour politicians they quote, seem to have spotted their opportunity to criticise a plain stupid act of UK virtue-signalling and self-harm.<\/p>\n<p>Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch even decided to portray the agreement with Tata Steel with a straight face as \u2018a great deal. Not just for Port Talbot, but for the UK\u2019, she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Thousands of jobs at risk<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30570\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Kemi_gov.uk_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Kemi_gov.uk_-300x200.png\" alt=\"Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Kemi_gov.uk_-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Kemi_gov.uk_.png 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mrs Badenoch ventured: \u2018What I would say to people who are concerned about job losses is that we do understand and we have a transition plan in place that\u2019s funded up to about \u00a3100 million to make sure that people have skills to retrain and move on to other things if they don\u2019t want to stay in the steel industry.\u2019 Move on to what \u2018other things\u2019? Picking strawberries? a \u2018green job\u2019 in lobbying?<\/p>\n<p>Gary Smith, GMB general secretary, retorted: \u201cThe jobs of thousands of steelworkers are now at risk. The cost to local people and the wider Port Talbot community will be immense. \u201cOnce again, we have the spectacle of leaders talking up the fantasy land of a \u2018just transition\u2019 while the bitter reality for workers is them getting the sack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Did anyone ask the voters if we wanted to stop making primary steel and throw thousands of men out of work?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Tata Steel\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-750x422.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/TataS-Steel.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>The absurdity is that the raw steel will still be made, merely elsewhere in the world, in countries like China and India which do not have a spiritual death-wish.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, <a title=\"Opens in a new tab or window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/jan\/24\/unions-accuse-tata-of-hypocrisy-over-port-talbot-closure-green-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>The Guardian reports<\/b><\/a> Tata Steel is doing exactly that, and opening a huge new blast furnace in India. The Guardian accuse Tata Steel of \u2018hypocrisy\u2019 failing to notice it is the UK Government net zero policy which is doing the damage. In the Commons debate cited above, only Sir John Hayes spoke out against the net zero agenda. Trudy Harrison (Copeland) (Con) spoke up for the West Cumbria Woodhouse colliery and its coking coal for blast furnaces.<\/p>\n<h2>Prayer and Action<\/h2>\n<p>Ensuring the UK\u2019s security in this uncertain age is the God-given responsibility of the state. To close industries and deliberately impoverish working people is not to love thy neighbour. It is stupidity and oppression. Israel in the Old Testament was a beacon of excellence for worshipping God and keeping his holy laws, not for national suicide or stopping men from working.<\/p>\n<p>It is almost as if an evil spirit of national rebellion and destruction, a covenant with death, has wormed its way into the corridors of power. Or perhaps the stupidity is being sent by the Lord as judgment as it was on Rehoboam.
