Such activity is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners and western commentators such as the BBC complain the law dates back to the colonial era but struggle to find any convictions for what they euphemistically describe as \u2018gay sex&#8217; in Kenya.<\/p>\n<h2>Pro-sodomy lobby group<\/h2>\n<p>In such a socially conservative country it comes as something of a surprise to find a specific pro-sodomy lobby group.<\/p>\n<p>But Kenya actually has a handful, of which the wealthiest is the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. (NGLHRC). This NGO led the action to overturn the law. Its leader said the legislation \u2018gave rise to a climate of homophobia.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Of course it does.\u00a0 The whole point of the law is to prevent homosexual activity. It also discourages lesbianism.\u00a0 Meanwhile, any idea that men or women can change sex is met with incredulity not just in Kenya but across Africa as a whole.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14352\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Njeri-Gateru.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Njeri-Gateru-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Njeri Gateru is Executive Director of NGLHRC in Kenya\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Njeri-Gateru-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Njeri-Gateru.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Njeri Gateru is Executive Director of NGLHRC in Kenya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Trying to use the law to change public opinion is common in the West and activists had hoped it might gain a foothold in Kenya and spread out wider.<\/p>\n<p>This explains the exasperation of Njeri Gateru, co-founder and executive director of NGLHRC and her complaints about \u2018prejudice&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/kenyaNews\/idAFL3N2192KO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>In March this year the Court of Appeal in Nairobi upheld<\/strong><\/a> a 2015 High Court decision compelling the Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Board to officially register the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) as an NGO. It raises little money from Kenyans. It is funded by Western foundations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigrid-rausing-trust.org\/About-SRT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sigrid Rausing Trust<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Trustees include Swedish heiress Sigrid Rausing herself and Establishment mzee Andrew Puddephatt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigrid-rausing-trust.org\/Grantees\/National-Gay-and-Lesbian-Human-Rights-Commission-NGLHRC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Trust&#8217;s website confirms<\/strong><\/a>: \u2018SRT has supported NGLHRC since 2017. Total funds received to date: \u00a3110,000 . Current grant: \u00a3180,000 over 3 years. Grant start: 1st August 2018.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>That is mega-money.\u00a0 The average salary in Nairobi is currently around \u00a36,500 per annum.<\/p>\n<h2>Substantial funding<\/h2>\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nglhrc.com\/partners#partners-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NGLHRC claims support from \u2018partners<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; such as the International Bar Association, Stonewall UK, Amnesty International and the US Department of State.<\/p>\n<p>The NGLHRC 2016 accounts also reveal substantial funding from all these other wealthy overseas donors:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice<br \/>\n\u2022 COC Netherlands<br \/>\n\u2022 Diakonia (Faith-based Swedish grant distributor)<br \/>\n\u2022 East African Sexual Health and Right Initiative (UHAI-EASHRI)<br \/>\n\u2022 Heinrich B\u00f6ll Stiftung Foundation (HBF)<br \/>\n\u2022 HIVOS (Netherlands)<br \/>\n\u2022 Open Society Foundations (George Soros)<br \/>\n\u2022 PITCH Project (Partnership to inspire, transform and connect HIV response)<br \/>\n\u2022 The European Union<br \/>\n\u2022 Tides Foundation (San Francisco, US)<br \/>\n\u2022 United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)<br \/>\n\u2022 The Canadian High Commission in Nairobi<\/p>\n<h2>Ford Foundation &amp; KHRC<\/h2>\n<p>NGLHRC is not the only Kenyan NGO advocating for gay rights to have received overseas funding. The not-to-be-confused-with Kenya Human Rights Commission has also been in the money. Nairobi-based KHRC was founded in 1992 and began by advocating for genuine human rights.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011 it moved into pro-sodomy lobbying and the cash started pouring in. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fordfoundation.org\/the-latest\/news\/ford-awards-seven-human-rights-organizations-1-million-each-to-become-global-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The US-based Ford Foundation<\/strong><\/a> gave the Kenya Human Rights Commission a cool $1m in 2012.\u00a0 In 2015-2016, Ford Foundation gave KHRC another $1.5m.\u00a0 Also in 2016,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/grants\/past?filter_program=asia-pacific-regional-office%2Copen-society-fellowship https:\/\/giveout.org\/grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Open Society Foundations<\/strong><\/a> gave KHRC \u00a3160,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14354\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/George-Kegoro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/George-Kegoro-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"George Kegoro, head of the Kenya Human Rights Commission, in full flow.\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/George-Kegoro-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/George-Kegoro.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Kegoro, head of the Kenya Human Rights Commission, in full flow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/page\/Kenya-Human-Rights-Commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Revolvy says<\/strong><\/a> The Swedish International Development Agency, Christian Aid, Trocaire, Danish International Development Agency, United Nations Development Programme, UNIFEM and Canadian International Development Agency have also given the KHRC substantial funds.<\/p>\n<p>Headed by George Kegoro, KHRC has a current staff of fifteen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khrc.or.ke\/programmes\/political-pluralism-and-diversity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Its website says:<\/strong><\/a> \u2018KHRC will continue to engage in national and regional advocacy on the protection and realization of the rights of LGBTI persons.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, KHRC also criticised the Kenya High Court ruling, saying it \u2018legitimises homophobia by upholding a colonial culture of exclusion, discrimination and violence against minorities&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>Proxy war<\/h2>\n<p>There is a proxy spiritual war going on here in which Western Christians are not even engaging.<br \/>\nThe overseas money has enabled NGLHRC to employ six full-time staff as at 2016. They include: \u2018three lawyers: Mr Eric Gitari (Executive Director), Ms. Njeri Gateru (Head of Legal Affairs), and Ms. Imani Kimiri (Security Officer).&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>NGLHRC specifically names the Heinrich B\u00f6ll Stiftung Foundation as enabling them to hire \u2018an Accounting Officer, Ms. Annet Njoki, Ms. Cori Arudi &#8230; Office Administrator and &#8230; a Media and Communications Consultant, Ms. Kari Mugo.&#8217; The cash also allows the publication of a professional website, glossy reports and extensive lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In a nation which outlaws homosexual practice, \u2018in 2016, we had two student volunteers interning with us from the University of Nairobi Law School; Faith Gaitho and Chan Mubanga.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Commission&#8217; website even openly names its \u2018seven-person Advisory Board that meets quarterly&#8217; as Mr. George Gachara, Mr. David Kuria, Ms. Muthoni Njogu, Ms. Beryl Ogutu, Mr. John Mathenge, Ms. Louiza Kabiru and Mr. Binyavanga Wainaina.<\/p>\n<h2>Answer to local prayer<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14351\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kenyan-Christians.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14351\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kenyan-Christians-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Kenyan Christians prayed and witnessed outside court\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kenyan-Christians-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kenyan-Christians-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kenyan-Christians.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kenyan Christians prayed and witnessed outside court<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Consequently, it was an answer to much local prayer in Kenya that the court ruled against such a well-funded group. Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians put in much labour of prayer and spiritual warfare. Kenyan Christians also witnessed outside the court.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic bishop Alfred Rotish told Reuters news agency outside the court: \u2018We cannot be another Sodom and Gomorrah&#8217;. Indeed the overwhelming majority of Christian and Muslim groups support the current law. In her commentary she added that there was \u2018no conclusive scientific proof that LGBTQ people are born that way.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The judges ruled that while they respected changes to laws on homosexuality in other countries, it was the court&#8217;s duty to respect prevailing Kenyan values.<\/p>\n<h2>June funding conference<\/h2>\n<p>Undaunted, later this month, donors and immorality NGOs will come together in a major bi-annual conference held in a secret location in Nairobi. <a href=\"https:\/\/globalphilanthropyproject.org\/Events\/cfcsvii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The \u2018Africa Donors Meeting&#8217;<\/strong><\/a> will bring grantmakers together from Monday, 17th June to Tuesday 18th. Then from Wednesday, 19th to Friday 21st June, the \u2018Changing Faces Changing Spaces Conference&#8217; is billed as \u2018Africa&#8217;s largest convening of the continent&#8217;s LGBTI and sex worker movements and donors.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14356\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina-600x314.png 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina-1024x535.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/GPP-Logo-Retina.png 1146w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>This is the seventh such conference.<a href=\"https:\/\/globalphilanthropyproject.org\/Events\/cfcsvii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> We read on the Global Philanthropy Project (GPP) website<\/strong><\/a>: \u2018The CFCS VI Africa Donors Meeting in 2017 brought together 75 grantmakers from 35 organizations, representing a diversity of public and private foundations, individual and corporate funders, and government agencies, embassies, bilateral and multilateral agencies.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalphilanthropyproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cfcs-vi-report_eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Its report says it enabled<\/strong><\/a> \u2018African activists to strategise, network, plan and reflect on achievements<br \/>\nand challenges pertinent to our movements&#8217;. 200 participants came including 35 donor agencies. This is big business for the African immorality movement.<\/p>\n<p>The 2019 conference, costing participants between US$440 \u2013 US$2,500 is private and even secretive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/africa-donors-pre-conference-7th-cfcs-conference-cfcs-vii-tickets-55595813575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Its Eventbrite page answers a FAQ on sharing<\/strong><\/a> about it on social media like this: \u2018No! Please note that this is a non-public meeting, intended to be shared only with those who are participating in person. We request that participants respect this guidance by refraining from sharing photos, location check-ins, or other updates on social media.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UHAI.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14358 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UHAI.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a>Indigenous funding?<\/h2>\n<p>GPP was itself founded in only 2009, as was its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/organizations\/uhai-eashri-east-african-sexual-health-rights-initiative-75379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>member fund UHAI EASHRI<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Uhai is kiswahili for \u2018life&#8217; while EASHRI stands for \u2018East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative&#8217;. Its website claims that \u2018UHAI is Africa&#8217;s first indigenous activist fund for sex workers and sexual and gender minorities.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It distributes money across anti-Christian groups in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>But its claim to be an \u2018indigenous activist fund&#8217; is, as you may have guessed, economical with the truth. It went to: \u2018Supporting civil society organisations working with and for lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ) women and trans and gender diverse communities in East Africa.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigrid-rausing-trust.org\/Grantees\/UHAI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sigrid Rausing Trust<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2018has supported UHAI since 2013. Total funds received to date: \u00a3670,000<br \/>\nCurrent grant: \u00a3390,000 over 3 years; Grant start: 1st June 2017.&#8217;\u00a0 They too confirmed \u2018UHAI provides grants and capacity support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) and sex worker organisations in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/giveout.org\/grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>homosexual donations charity Give-Out<\/strong><\/a> has also provided money to UHAI-EASHRI.<\/p>\n<h2>Addresses:<\/h2>\n<p>One website says UHAI EASHRI operates out of offices at: 3rd Floor, Suite 5, Rosami Court, Muringa Rd., Kilimani P.O.
