That was just three weeks before Friday night&#8217;s air strikes. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opcw.org\/fileadmin\/OPCW\/EC\/88\/en\/ec88dg01_e_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Report is openly published here<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 We read at paragraph 6 (a):<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The Secretariat has verified the destruction of 25 of the 27 chemical weapons production facilities (CWPFs) declared by the Syrian Arab Republic.&#8217; It goes on. &#8230; &#8216;the Secretariat conducted an initial<br \/>\ninspection of the last two stationary above-ground facilities.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It concludes: &#8216;the Secretariat, together with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), has been making all the required arrangements to assist the Syrian Arab Republic in the destruction of the facilities located at these two sites.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2>No\u00a0scheduled chemicals<\/h2>\n<p>Paragraph 11 says this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8217;11. In accordance with paragraph 11 of Council decision EC-83\/DEC.5, the second round of inspections at the Barzah and Jamrayah facilities of the SSRC was concluded on\u00a022 November 2017. The results of the inspections were reported as an addendum\u00a0(EC-87\/DG.15\/Add.1, dated 28 February 2018) to the report entitled \u201cStatus of\u00a0Implementation of Executive Council Decision EC-83\/DEC.5 (dated 11 November 2016)\u201d (EC-87\/DG.15, dated 23 February 2018). The analysis of\u00a0samples taken during the inspections did not indicate the presence of scheduled\u00a0chemicals in the samples, and the inspection team did not observe any activities\u00a0inconsistent with obligations under the Convention during the second round of inspections at the Barzah and Jamrayah facilities.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The Report concludes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8217;17. The main focus of the future activities of the OPCW mission in the Syrian Arab Republic will be on the activities of the FFM and on the implementation of Council decisions EC-83\/DEC.5 and EC-81\/DEC.4, including declaration-related issues, as\u00a0well as on the verification of the destruction of the two stationary above-ground\u00a0facilities, and annual inspections of the underground structures already verified as destroyed.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h2>Barzah &#8216;developing anti-cancer drugs&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/middleeast\/201804151063587614-syria-missile-strike-medical-lab-destruction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Even worse, Sputnik News claims<\/a><\/strong> the\u00a0Barzah scientific research center was &#8216;a pharmaceutical facility used to produce cancer drugs.&#8217;\u00a0 It quotes the facility head (who is un-named):<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the Syria crisis broke out, the country has been short of all kinds of medicines due to the sanctions from Western countries. Foreign companies stopped exporting high-quality medicines to Syria, especially anti-cancer medicines. So we have been conducting researches on anti-cancer medicines here, and three cancer drugs have been developed,&#8221; the facility head said.<\/p>\n<p>The man was interviewed on RT standing at the site in plain clothes.\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;If there were chemical weapons in the building, we would not be here. My colleagues and I came here at 05:00 this morning. If there were chemical weapons, we would need to wear masks and take other protective measures to be staying here,&#8221; the man explained.<\/p>\n<p>The US knew there were no chemical weapons at the site.\u00a0 Have they instead destroyed an institution developing life-saving medicines?\u00a0 Above all, medicines the Syrians are banned from importing?\u00a0 that would be a cruel and cynical blow.<\/p>\n<h2>No alternative to\u00a0Bashar\u00a0al-Assad<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/editorials\/syria-strikes-parliament-vote-trump-theresa-may-jeremy-corbyn-chemical-weapons-latest-a8304691.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In an editorial, the Independent criticises the strikes<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 It quotes\u00a0Patrick Cockburn.\u00a0 Mr Cockburn is an experienced reporter and commentator on the Middle East.\u00a0 He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/syria-chemical-attack-bashar-al-assad-air-strikes-negotiation-only-way-to-end-war-a8303251.html\">argues<\/a>\u00a0the only realistic rulers of Syria are Bashar\u00a0al-Assad or the various al-Qaeda clones, such as Isis and al-Nusra.<\/p>\n<p>The editorial says: &#8216;Any serious attempt to weaken the Syrian leader, therefore, risks prolonging the agonies of the Syrian people \u2013 although he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/aistrikes-syria-theresa-may-donald-trump-allies-bashar-alassad-chemical-weapons-a8304631.html\">writes today<\/a>\u00a0that these strikes were more of a \u201cgesture\u201d\u00a0than an attempt to damage Mr Assad\u2019s military machine.<\/p>\n<p>And we repeat, it is President Assad and his Russian allies who have defended Syria&#8217;s Christians.\u00a0 If the UK had had its way, jihadists would be in charge of Syria.\u00a0 Naturally, in that event, the Christians of Syria would be history.\u00a0 \u00a0Se we thank God for president Assad.\u00a0 And we thank God for the Russians.\u00a0 Through them the Lord has preserved the life and liberty of our brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n<h2>Syrian churches condemn attack<\/h2>\n<p>Now, you won&#8217;t see this mentioned in the mainstream media.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.premier.org.uk\/News\/World\/Catholic-and-Orthodox-Church-condemn-brutal-and-unjustified-assault-on-Syria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Premier Radio has reported<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the leaders of the Greek Orthodox and Greek-Melkite Catholic churches have condemned the weekend strike.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued by the Patriarchates of Antioch and all the East for the Greek Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, and Greek-Melkite Catholic Damascus, the faith leaders questioned the legality behind the move.<br \/>\nThey stated that the &#8220;brutal aggression&#8221; is a &#8220;clear violation of the international laws and the UN Charter&#8221;, and was an &#8220;unjustified assault&#8221; on a sovereign country that is a member of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It causes us great pain that this assault comes from powerful countries to which Syria did not cause any harm in any way,&#8221; the church leaders added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The allegations of the USA and other countries that the Syrian army is using chemical weapons and that Syria is a country that owns and uses this kind of weapon, is a claim that is unjustified and unsupported by sufficient and clear evidence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;We call upon all churches in the countries that participated in the aggression, to fulfill their Christian duties, according to the teachings of the Gospel, and condemn this aggression and to call their governments to commit to the protection of international peace.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.antiochpatriarchate.org\/en\/page\/a-statement-issued-by-the-patriarchates-of-antioch-and-all-the-east-for-the-greek-orthodox-syrian-orthodox-and-greek-melkite-catholic-damascus-14-april-2018\/1918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is the full statement on the Antioch Patriarchate website<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Law and public opposed to strikes<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.craigmurray.org.uk\/archives\/2018\/04\/the-british-governments-legal-justification-for-bombing-is-entirely-false-and-without-merit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in his blog<\/a><\/strong>, ex-UK-ambassador Craig Murray tears the UK&#8217;s attempt at a legal justification of its Syria strikes to shreds.\u00a0 His analysis is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2018\/04\/16\/labours-commissioned-legal-opinion-on-legitimacy-of-uk-air-strikes-on-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backed up by Professor Dapo Akande here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/syria-latest-air-strikes-poll-theresa-may-chemical-weapons-trump-assad-a8304716.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Independent published the results<\/a><\/strong> of an opinion poll.\u00a0\u00a0The exclusive survey showed more people opposed than supported the action.\u00a0 Just 28 per cent supported them, while 36 per cent opposed.\u00a0 26 per cent neither opposed nor supported the strikes and 11 per cent did not know.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/news\/2018\/04\/12\/two-one-public-oppose-missile-strikes-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouGov research found<\/a><\/strong> an even stronger reaction. This was despite the majority of Britons (61%) thinking a chemical attack happened. Fewer than a quarter of Britons (22%) said they would support the attacks. Almost twice as many opposed them (43%).<\/p>\n<h1>General Mattis &#8216;saved the day&#8217;<\/h1>\n<p>So it now appears there was no justification for the strikes, particularly on Barzah and Jamrayah.\u00a0 Even then, it could have been worse.<\/p>\n<p>Julian Borger, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/apr\/14\/syria-crisis-danger-airstrikes-assad-battlefield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing in the Guardian<\/a><\/strong>, is among many thanking General Mattis for reining in his president.\u00a0 The man known as &#8216;Mad Dog&#8217; is a combat veteran.\u00a0 Borger says: &#8216;Mattis fought hard to keep the airstrikes narrowly focused on the three alleged chemical weapons facilities.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 Mattis ordered a strike on what turned out to be a wedding party in\u00a0Mukaradeeb.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2004\/may\/25\/usa.iraq7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The &#8216;wedding party massacre&#8217; killed 42 people<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 Too many of our most bellicose politicians never served in the forces.\u00a0 As a field commander the General knows full well the horrors of war.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/apr\/15\/trump-bluster-about-syria-james-mattis-calling-shots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Also in the Guardian, Simon Tisdall agrees<\/a><\/strong>: &#8216;It was Jim Mattis who saved the day.&#8217;\u00a0 He\u00a0&#8216;stood up to a\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0baying for blood.&#8217;\u00a0 Mr Trump&#8217;s new security advisor, John Bolton, may want to strike at Iran.\u00a0 Nevertheless, Tisdall says: &#8216;Mattis told Trump, in effect, that the third world war was not going to start on his watch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The US was attacking Syria\u2019s chemical weapons capabilities, he said. That, nothing more or less, was what the air strikes were about.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h1>Peter Hitchens: &#8216;Any fool can kill a man&#8217;<\/h1>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk\/2018\/04\/how-on-earth-would-killing-more-people-rescue-syria.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Hitchens said, in his Mail on Sunday blog<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;No doubt there are times when we must fight. But there are plenty more when we should not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Any fool can kill a man in a second and ruin a city in a week. But it takes long years of nurture to raise a child to adulthood, and centuries to build a civilisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Yet I look around me and see the mouths of intelligent people opened wide, yelling for an attack on Syria, when the only certain outcome of that will be blood and screams and ruins, and the deaths of innocents in &#8216;collateral damage&#8217;. What good will this do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;What is wrong with them? They are not cruel and stupid, yet they call for actions which are both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Haven&#8217;t we got enough misery in Syria already? The place is a mass of ruins, graveyards and refugee camps. To what end?
