Admiral Mike Rogers is talking up Russian hacking despite there being no evidence of it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A Russian hacking scare is doing the rounds in our newspapers.<\/p>\n

Just for a change, this time\u00a0the imaginary target is the UK’s General Election.<\/p>\n

However, it is not clear what they are supposed to be doing. \u00a0Are they firing off tweets? \u00a0Did\u00a0they leak the Labour Manifesto? \u00a0Are they planning to flood the count with agents? \u00a0Then what?<\/p>\n

‘Russian hacking’ of Macron\u00a0was actually from the US<\/h2>\n

The Sun Newspaper reports<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>US National Security Agency head Admiral Mike Rogers confirming his staff were in contact with Britain.<\/p>\n

Mr Rogers told a Senate hearing in Washington: ‘We had become aware of Russian activity. \u00a0We had talked to our French counterparts and gave them a heads-up. \u00a0We are doing the same with our German counterparts and our British counterparts.’<\/p>\n

He also claimed Russia was behind an attack on new French leader Emmanuel Macron\u2019s team on the eve of the election.<\/p>\n

The hacking attack on Macron\u2019s campaign \u2014 a day ahead of the\u00a0run-off vote that saw him elected \u2014 led to thousands of files being leaked online. \u00a0Experts said it was a clumsy and amateurish effort. \u00a0It had none of the hallmarks of a sophisticated attack, let alone involvement of a state agency.<\/p>\n

Indeed, Andrew Rettman in EUObserver said<\/a><\/strong>: ‘The spread of stolen emails designed to harm Emmanuel Macron was linked to US-based neo-Nazis, according to a French investigation.’ \u00a0Admiral Rogers was plain wrong. \u00a0And he must have known he was\u00a0giving the Senate misleading information.<\/p>\n

Russians are capable<\/h2>\n

Boris Johnson chimed in<\/a><\/strong>, claiming there was ‘no question\u00a0at all’ that President Putin hacked the Democratic National Convention. \u00a0(Actually it was a Democrat insider who leaked the material to Wikileaks.)<\/p>\n

In apparent response to a question about hacking our election, Mr Johnson said there was ‘plenty of evidence that the Russians are capable of doing that.’ \u00a0Going further, he said there was ‘no doubt they had been up to all sorts of dirty tricks.’<\/p>\n

No doubt any number of states have people capable of hacking into computers. \u00a0But clever boys and girls out there can do the same. \u00a0Moreover, the channel to Wikileaks is always open to whistle-blowing insiders.<\/p>\n

Talking of Wikileaks, in March they released material<\/a><\/strong> from the US Central Intelligence Agency. \u00a0It was leaked by an insider. \u00a0Among the documents,\u00a0WikiLeaks exposed the CIA\u2019s ‘UMBRAGE’ group. \u00a0These software engineers\u00a0use malware to steal and replicate the digital ‘fingerprints’ of a foreign hacker. \u00a0That allows the U.S. to blame the hack on a foreign enemy. \u00a0And today, sadly, the US elite see Russia as an enemy. \u00a0Stick in some ‘Russian script’ and it’s ‘job done’.<\/p>\n

The false story will run because everyone in the mainstream media and every Establishment politician wants to believe ‘the Russians did it’.<\/p>\n

US interference in elections<\/h2>\n

The Washington Post has led on the Russian hacking nonsense. \u00a0It has even had its fingers burnt with posting fake news about the Vermont Utility<\/a><\/strong> in its eagerness to see the Russians everywhere.<\/p>\n

But just before the presidential election, Ishaan Tharoor wrote in the WP about US interference in elections<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0They headed his article: ‘The long history of the U.S. interfering with elections elsewhere’.<\/p>\n

Tharoor wrote the US:\u00a0has occupied and intervened militarily<\/a> in a whole swath of countries in the Caribbean and Latin America and fomented coups against democratically elected populists<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He speaks of the USA’s ‘most infamous episodes’. \u00a0These ‘include firstly the ousting of Iranian\u00a0Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953<\/a>‘. \u00a0Tharoor says his\u00a0government ‘was replaced by an authoritarian monarchy favorable to Washington’. \u00a0That will be the Shah. \u00a0Secondly, there was the ‘removal and assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961’. \u00a0Thirdly, Tharoor says the US did not care for socialist Chilean President Salvador Allende. \u00a0He writes that his\u00a0government ‘was swept aside in 1973 by a military coup led by the ruthless Gen. Augusto Pinochet’. \u00a0And who backed Pinochet? \u00a0The US gave him assistance.<\/p>\n

But the US did not just oust left-wing governments in a cold-war fever. \u00a0Tharoor says: ‘Sometimes that agenda also explicitly converged with the interests of U.S.\u00a0business’. \u00a0In 1954, he writes, ‘Washington unseated Guatemala’s left-wing president, Jacobo Arbenz’. \u00a0Arbenz ‘had the temerity to challenge the vast control of the United Fruit Co., a U.S. corporation’. \u00a0The President brought in agrarian laws that would be fairer to Guatemalan farmers. \u00a0Writes Tharoor: ‘The CIA went on to install and back a series of right-wing dictatorships that brutalized the impoverished nation for almost half a century.’ \u00a0The whole article is well worth a read<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Modern history of US \/ UK interference<\/h2>\n

And all of that is to neglect modern history. \u00a0The US and UK together brought about\u00a0the ruin of Iraq, the desolation of Libya and the destabilisation of Syria. \u00a0The EU interfered in Ukraine, toppling a democratically-elected president because he was pro-Russian. \u00a0And of course that man George Soros was ready with his ‘Open Society Foundation’ to enable a bit of violent street action in support. \u00a0Recently,\u00a0President Obama tried to interfere, albeit\u00a0clumsily, in the UK’s Brexit referendum.<\/p>\n

So let’s all try to be a little bit grown up, shall we? \u00a0Of course states want to deal with those who are friendly to them. \u00a0And of course they might try to influence things so that friendly people come to power. \u00a0Or those to their advantage. \u00a0And if they are not doing it, the bankers or other elites are doing it. \u00a0Or even organised crime. \u00a0The Mafia no doubt influence elections on Sicily and in cities like Rome and Turin. \u00a0And we can be sure the very last thing armaments manufacturers want is nation states getting on well with each other and defeating terrorism. \u00a0It follows they will do their best to interfere at election time everywhere.<\/p>\n

During this general election, can we get around and ask for some evidence of the Russians hacking it? \u00a0All the talk of Russian hacking might leave President Putin feeling flattered and amused. \u00a0All the same, it degrades those who spout it and wastes everyone’s time. \u00a0Is there no real news out there?<\/p>\n
