That of course is complete nonsense. \u00a0Whoever is responsible for the chemical weapons in Idlib, there is no threat to America&#8217;s interests at all.<\/p>\n<p>The missile strike is illegal in international law. \u00a0The President needed a UN resolution before such a strike. \u00a0The UN Security Council had not even voted on how to send in International inspectors to\u00a0verify the alleged chemical attack as we went to press. \u00a0The missile strike is also illegal in US law. \u00a0He needed Congressional approval. \u00a0Indeed, in August 2013, Donald Trump tweeted this about President Obama in exactly the same circumstances (the link is Twitter; all our links open in a new tab automatically):<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/373581528405905408\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;The President must get Congressional approval before attacking Syria &#8211; big mistake if he does not!&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Stay out of Syria!&#8217; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/383834-trump-syria-strike-old-tweets\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trump yelled in a series of tweets<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0That was Trump 2013. \u00a0Three and a half years later, he is President and despite our prayers, he has been &#8216;got at&#8217; by the Neo-Cons and the Hawks. \u00a0He hasn&#8217;t &#8216;drained the swamp&#8217;. \u00a0The swamp has drained him. \u00a0He has, to use a British expression, &#8216;gone native&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>Contrast with Mosul<\/h2>\n<p>It all stinks. \u00a0We have the speed of the\u00a0events and the lack of any clear evidence against the Syrian government. \u00a0Then we have the rush to bomb something instead of a measured dispassionate response. \u00a0We have all the Western leaders ganging up. \u00a0And still the &#8216;Cui Bono&#8217; question remains. \u00a0Who benefits from the gas story on the eve of peace talks and the Syrian reconstruction meeting in Brussels? \u00a0Maybe the rebels. \u00a0Certainly the war-mongers. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_uk\/article\/how-much-will-the-defense-industry-make-off-of-a-missile-strike-against-syria\" target=\"_blank\">Above all the armaments manufacturers<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Definitely the bankers. \u00a0Even the oil barons are pleased. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/04\/06\/investing\/oil-prices-syria-us-military-action\/\" target=\"_blank\">CNN reports the price of crude has leapt<\/a><\/strong> in response to uncertainty caused by the missile strike.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10439\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10439\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/missile-strike-follows-idlib-gas-attack\/mosul\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10439\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mosul-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"The US were still investigating whether they were responsible for 300 deaths from an airstrike in Mosul ten days later.\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mosul-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mosul-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mosul-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/mosul.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The US were still investigating whether they were responsible for 300 deaths from an airstrike in Mosul ten days later.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Remember, the only evidence is photographic from the jihadists in Idlib. \u00a0We know they lie to advance their aims. \u00a0The suggestion that a rebel chemical weapons factory on the ground was bombed remains highly plausible. \u00a0Another possibility is an Islamic State operation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sputniknews.com\/middleeast\/201704061052352457-syria-terrorist-chemical-weapons-from-iraq-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Syrians say they warned the UN weeks ago<\/a><\/strong> that the rebels and IS were bringing in chemical weapons from Turkey. \u00a0And in January 2016,\u00a0the Organisation for\u00a0the Prohibition of\u00a0Chemical Weapons announced all chemical weapons in\u00a0Syria itself had been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Contrast the speed with which\u00a0Trump has leapt to blame and bomb Syria with the caution his administration expressed over the attack in Mosul. \u00a0There, US warplanes killed 200 &#8211; 300 civilians. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/27\/world\/middleeast\/mosul-iraq-isis-civilian-deaths-us-airstrikes.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Even the New York Times reported<\/a><\/strong> that ten days later, US military officials were still &#8216;investigating whether it (the coalition) was to blame for the dozens of deaths there&#8217;. \u00a0Note &#8216;dozens&#8217; not &#8216;hundreds&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>Missile strike betrayal of Trump promises<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10447\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/missile-strike-follows-idlib-gas-attack\/tomahawk_missile_624\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10447\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tomahawk_missile_624-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"Tomahawk missile. It is clear to any specialist that Washington made the decision to strike before the events in Idlib, which were only used as a pretext for a show of force.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>That makes sense. \u00a0Both the Russians and NATO nations were informed in advance of the strike. \u00a0That takes the planning phase back further than yesterday. \u00a0In addition, the sheer speed with which European leaders condemned President Assad strongly suggests they knew the original story\u00a0was coming.<\/p>\n<p>Some of us prayed for a Trump victory rather than Clinton. \u00a0That was precisely because Hillary is a stooge of the Hawks who would start World War Three. \u00a0She was actually calling for a missile strike hours before it happened. \u00a0Trump promised an end to interventionism and a reset with the Russians. \u00a0His action is a return to neo-conservative warmongering in a complete betrayal\u00a0of the promises he\u00a0made on the campaign trail:<\/p>\n<h2>Intervention\u00a0breaks\u00a0election pledges:<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2016\/dec\/07\/donald-trump-we-will-stop-racing-to-topple-foreign-regimes\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the Guardian from December 2017<\/a><\/strong>: \u00a0&#8216;<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a> has laid out a US military policy that would\u00a0avoid interventions in foreign conflicts and instead focus heavily on defeating Islamic State militancy. &#8216;\u201cWe will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn\u2019t be involved with,\u201d the president-elect said on Tuesday night in Fayetteville, near Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina.<br \/>\n&#8216;\u201cInstead our focus must be on defeating terrorism and destroying Isis, and we will.\u201d&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/369439-trump-military-plan-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here is RT&#8217;s take on Trump&#8217;s &#8216;Thank You&#8217; tour<\/a><\/strong>: &#8216;Donald Trump has laid out a military policy which he says is aimed at ending \u201cintervention and chaos\u201d overseas. He promised to build up the \u201cdepleted\u201d military, but said it would be done with prevention in mind, rather than aggression.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text text js-mediator-article\">\n<p>&#8216;Speaking at the latest stop on his \u201cthank you\u201d tour of swing states, President-elect Donald Trump told a crowd in Fayetteville, North Carolina that he wants to <em>\u201cstrengthen old friendships and seek out new friendships,\u201d<\/em> stressing that the US will <em>\u201cstop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn\u2019t be involved with.\u201d&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trump-military-idUSKBN13W06L\" target=\"_blank\">And here is Reuter&#8217;s confirmation<\/a><\/strong>: &#8216;President-elect Donald Trump laid out a U.S. military policy on Tuesday that would avoid interventions in foreign conflicts and instead focus heavily on defeating the Islamic State militancy.<br \/>\n&#8216;&#8221;We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn&#8217;t be involved with,&#8221; \u00a0And on the alleged chemical attack: &#8216;Why would Assad do that when he&#8217;s winning?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Crispin Blunt MP, chair of the respected Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, agrees. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-39524685\" target=\"_blank\">He told the BBC<\/a><\/strong> the strike was a &#8216;carefully calibrated and appropriate response.&#8217; Then he added a caviat: &#8216;so long as the information was correct&#8217;.<br \/>\n&#8216;The reason I would have doubt and express doubt [over the information] is this doesn&#8217;t make any sense from the Syrian government. \u00a0They would know this use of chemical weapons would get this response. \u00a0The overall conflict is moving in their direction,&#8217; about an armed response to what the BBC called &#8216;the atrocity&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/politics\/jeremy-corbyn-slams-us-air-strike-on-syria-and-calls-for-urgent-peace-talks-a3509881.html\" target=\"_blank\">Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn also criticsed <\/a><\/strong>the missile strike.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Corbyn called for an &#8216;urgent independent UN investigation&#8217; into the chemical attack.<\/p>\n<p>But he said: &#8216;Unilateral military action without legal authorisation or independent verification risks intensifying a multi-sided conflict that has already killed hundreds of thousands of people&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>Islamic State encouraged<\/h2>\n<p>Where does a missile strike knocking out a Syrian airfield leave\u00a0the fight against Islamic State, said by\u00a0Trump to be his &#8216;focus&#8217;? \u00a0IS reportedly launched an attack on the Syrian army at the same time as the chemical story broke. \u00a0On the run from Mosul, they will only be encouraged to step up operations in Syria. \u00a0The UK- and US- backed jihadists will also be energised to fight on. \u00a0That will set back the current Syrian peace talks in Geneva, which had been <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mideast-crisis-syria-opposition-idUSKBN1684H5\" target=\"_blank\">reported by Reuters news agency<\/a><\/strong> to be making progress.<\/p>\n<p>However, the rebels&#8217; EU-fueled demand for Bashar Al-Assad to step aside would mean devastation for Syria&#8217;s religious minorities. \u00a0That&#8217;s the President&#8217;s own Alawite sect, Shia Muslims in general, Christians and Druze. \u00a0All would be murdered and\/or driven out of Syria by the Western-backed Sunni Muslim jihadists.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the real &#8216;Red Line&#8217; for the American Neo-Cons was Assad winning the peace and staying in power. \u00a0Ron Paul, who ran for president, says they were &#8216;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/384021-ron-paul-syria-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\">terrified peace was about to break out&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0A few days ago US ambassador to the UN and Trump appointee Nikki Haley said there was a new policy. \u00a0Under it, the removal of Assad will &#8216;no longer be a priority.&#8217; \u00a0Within days, after the chemical incident, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-39520586\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said<\/a><\/strong> there is\u00a0&#8216;No role&#8217; for Assad to govern Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the attack reports were genuine, and the Syrian government was responsible, s it any business of the US or the UK? \u00a0We are not the world&#8217;s policemen. \u00a0Last night&#8217;s\u00a0US missile strike takes us right back into &#8216;Responsibility to Protect&#8217;. \u00a0That Soros-invented doctrine means any pretext is used to topple world leaders with whom the elite disagree. \u00a0If the destabilisation or the hostilities make money for the bankers, so much the better.<\/p>\n<h2>Russia maturity\u00a0provides\u00a0glimmer of hope<\/h2>\n<p>The only glimmer of hope in this crisis is the maturity of the Russian Federation. \u00a0President Putin did not respond in kind when President Obama tried to sour relations for his successor by expelling 35 Russian Diplomats in December 2016. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/12\/29\/obama-expels-35-russian-diplomats-election-hacking-row\/\" target=\"_blank\">At the time President-elect Trump praised &#8216;very smart&#8217; Putin<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0Now\u00a0Russia&#8217;s government newspaper website Rossiiskaya Gazeta has reported that\u00a0Russia will not hit back at the US strike. \u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-39529264\" target=\"_blank\">Despite condemning the US action<\/a><\/strong>, they say they\u00a0will not\u00a0escalate military action in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy speaker of the State Duma, Pyotr Tolstoy, told the assembly at a full session: &#8216;How can we respond?
