{"id":4658,"date":"2012-11-02T18:50:46","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T18:50:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/?page_id=4658"},"modified":"2012-11-02T19:04:44","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T19:04:44","slug":"diwali-3-4","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.christianvoice.org.uk\/index.php\/diwali-3-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Diwali 3-4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LEARN TO FEAR THE LORD<\/p>\n<p>In the Bible book from which the Lord Jesus quoted more than any other, the word &#8216;learn&#8217; occurs seven times.\u00a0 Five times the context is to fear the Lord:<\/p>\n<p>I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.\u00a0 Deut. 4:10\u00a0 (cf Deut. 14:23, 17:19, 31:12,13)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sixth occurrence is to learn God&#8217;s laws:<\/p>\n<p>And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.\u00a0 Deut. 5:1<\/p>\n<p>On the final occasion, there is a stark warning:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deut. 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10\u00a0\u00a0 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. 11\u00a0 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.\u00a0 12\u00a0 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.\u00a0 13\u00a0 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.\u00a0 14\u00a0 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>WHAT IS DIWALI?<\/p>\n<p>The word Diwali (or Divali &#8211; the English words are only an attempt to capture the sounds) is a corruption of two Sanskrit words: Deepa meaning light and Avali meaning a row.\u00a0 It means a row of lights.\u00a0 According to the Hindu Ramayana, the black Ravana, Tamil king of Sri Lanka, had abducted Sita, an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi (or Laxmi), who was the sister of but still betrothed to Ram (or Rama), an incarnation of the god Vishnu.\u00a0 Ravana (or Ravan) was an evil king according to the Ramayana, but had a perfect law and order system in Lanka (which means &#8216;resplendent&#8217;) according to Sikh writings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The monkey-god Hanuman went into Lanka to spy on Ravana, and to cut a very long story short, Rama&#8217;s army and Hanuman&#8217;s army of monkeys fought the demons and people of Ravana and won.\u00a0 Sri Lanka was destroyed and all its people.\u00a0 Rama and Sita returned home to Ayodhya in northern India to be crowned king and queen, and to celebrate their home-coming, and because they had been away for fourteen years, the people lit little deva (or diya) lamps to show them the way.\u00a0 Diwali is the celebration of these mythological events.<\/p>\n<p>What is less well-known is that according to the Hindu scriptures, Rama married many other women as well, mutilated and tortured women, called his father a fool and an idiot, burnt the Dravidians of Sri Lanka with fire, and, although he was a god, died by drowning in a river.\u00a0 Despite Rama&#8217;s incest, polygamy, disrespect, genocide and untimely end, according to Goa-world.net, &#8220;Diwali symbolises the destruction of evil and the return of peace and happiness &#8230; a celebration of the triumph of good over evil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get this important resource free in booklet form when you join Christian Voice in November 2012.
